And my Dad would always have a nice fire roaring in the fireplace...I would go sit in front of the fireplace until my back was so hot I couldn't stand it.
Oh, yum. Me too Paula. I like it best that way! When I was a little girl, I used to mix them like that and then make a sandwich. Oh, YES----There is a childhood memory, Nilla.
When I was small, all my aunts and uncles on my mother's difr would gather at my Grandmothers house after the morning football game between our rivals and our team. It was serious business. Then the women would help get the dinner together and table set while the men would sit in front of the tv watching college football games. gifts were for. :) We also sent them a box from all of us because they couldn't get home for Christmas.
For Christmas, the first 13 years it was only me and then my sister came along. My father made a sign with a light bulb behind it that he cut out of cardboard and boxed it in that said Merry Christmas. We always had that in our front window. Then we would hang red and greem streamers diagonally acrossed the livingroom ceiling with a red paper bell in the middle. We always had to wait in the morning until my father went downstairs first (that was when he turned on the tree lights and started the train running under the tree, and put the Christmas music on). Then he would come get my mother and I and we would go downstairs to the splendor and excitement of Christmas morning. Sometimes I would get nuts, fruit, and small things in my stocking, and don't forget the piece of coal. That was what we burned then. He would always make breakfast after the gifts exchanged and then the rest of the day was spent visiting different relatives and looking at their beautifully decorated houses and tree and each had to show what they got for Christmas.
We carried on the same tradition when we had Josh, only we would open Xmas stockings while waiting for my mother and dad to come over to the house in the morning. The night before they brought over their gifts and ours that we stashed over there and it was always my father's job to arrange them under our Christmas tree. My mom, dad and I filled the stockings; even had ones for the pets. Josh would put out milk and cookies for Santa along with a letter and carrots for the reindeer, and it was my husband that then went down to turn on the tree lights, Christmas music, etc. Christmas morning.
Christmas in my day isn't like it is today tho with the expensive gifts and all and relatives are all scattered about. Now, my mother and dad have passed on and it is just Josh coming down from Winchester to help my husband and I celebrate.
I used to love to go to Midnight Mass up north with the snow falling down so hard that we never knew if we would ever get the car back to our home again. It would be a long mass, with some people nodding off and others bring the smell of drinks on their breath, along with the boy and girlfirends and others that only came for Xmas and Easter.
Oh gosh, I had better quit gabbing. You didn't ask for a novel. ;(
Ho Ho Ho Wanda i happen to have a TV you can have nothing wrong with it at all.. Its not real big neither.. Just setting in my bedroom taking up space as my daughter gave me a bigger tv ... Your welcome to it if you want...
I'm sorry folks, but I just saw where Paula used to remember a burning fireplace. When Josh was young, before we came down south, we always had a roaring fire in our fireplace and Josh would always ask his dad to make sure he put that out when he went to bed so Santa could come down the chimney. Ok that's it for that one.
NILLA...I did see where you said you would send photos of your little beauties. Looking forward to seeing them. Did they cry? I guess they are too young to fear Santa. My oldest grandson was afraid of Santa and Clowns. His mom had a B'Day party for him and paid a clown something like $100 to entertain the children and grandson wouldn't go near him. He ran clean across the room crying. Clown finally had to leave!
NILLA--That is a wonderful question that you asked. You will have to repeat it when there are more of us on here. I love to hear the answers. I think the game is back on....
Well each Christmas as a child we would go to bed BUT not go to sleep because then my dad and aunts n uncle would open the trunks of the cars and bring toys in the house... We watched from the window and peeked down the vent in the floor listening ... Christmas morning my aunt n uncle would come and me my sister and brother would go down stairs... We always had a big underground with train nhouses which took my dad the whole month of December to set up and the whole living room space it took to... All our gifts were on the couch... We got to open them and the very last Christmas my mother was alive (she died in 1957 at 29 of cancer)I got a beautiful Bride Doll and have it to pass on to Jasmin in the orginal box.... At Grandparents house each Christmas morning my pappy would fry Oysters... and we would have Christmas there also...
Shame on you NILLA for sneeking a peek out the window. I was told that Santa wouldn't come until I was asleep and heaven help me if I was awake; he would pass right on by. :) You sound as if you had very nice Christmases too. Thanks for sharing.
As for turkey sandwiches, I like to put stuffing on first, then turkey, then cranberry sauce and then ripe and green olives. I put salt and pepper and some mayonaise on it all and enjoy. Yum! Then I am stuffed and suffering all over again. :)
NILLA What a nice gift you have saved for Jasmine. I'm sure that she will love, and maybe carry on the tradition by giving it to her child or grandchild.
Being a child my Dad made a whole town. Put the train set around it. We kids would help him set it up before Christmas. It was a childhood tradition. The church, stores, farms, people, cattle, pigs, chickens. He built or carved them all. hee hee the outhouse too. I remember an outfit for school and a new outfit for church. We kids would always get. One or two toys. Stuffing was usually candy; not BIG stuffings like we have today. Oh it was so so much fun. Never thought of peeking cause Santa wouldn't stop at our house. Didn't want that to happen.
Oh my you guys dont get me started. The Harlem globe trotters were really great. My grand son laughed until he was exhausted.
Christmas as a child is a blur of all the years. My mother didn't like Christmas .I made it a point to do for my children what I didn't get. I raised my children alone so I dodn't mean money I mean traditions. Christmas starts this Thursday. At dinner we make plans for the rest of the year. Sat. we all pile in cars and head for the mountains. We have been going to the same place since 1962. My sons were 2 and 3 years old. Now the grand children go too and take every friend they can pile in their cars. We tromp through the forest to find the perfect tree. Ive done it in pouring rain, snow and sun. I never know what the weather man brings. We have never missed a year. Hot chili over a camp fire and a slow drive home with sleeping babes. I have always flocked my tree. 8ft with a big skirt. The flocking fireproofs it and gives it a winter wonderland look. I start shopping for my large family in Jan.so when the first of December comes I'm through and there is no stress and only the fun stuff to do. We have changed our tradition in the past few years. In the past everyone would come to my house early in the morning to fix an big breakfast and open gifts which took hours but now my children have babes of their own and they should be in their own homes. I have Christmas the night before with a large buffet and we open presents and munch on goodies until the babes fall asleep on blankets in front of the tree.Christmas is quiet for me and I'm ok with that. I can go over to any of the kids homes but quiet feels good.
When I was a little girl, the tradition that sticks most in my mind is the Christmas Tree. Mom & Dad would go buy the tree on Christmas Eve. and set it up, but not trim it. My brother and I were rushed off to bed early thinking that the reason was so Santa could come. After we were asleep, my parents trimmed the the tree and when we got up in the morning, we, of course, thought Santa trimmed it. The thought of Santa actually taking the time to trim OUR tree was so very special to me.
DANA, NILLA, ANNE-MARIE, CANDY-- I loved all your remembrances of the holidays. I think we can probably all identify with each others traditions. IF YOUR NAME IS NOT ON THE ABOVE LIST, would you please consider sharing your holiday remembrances with us? I love this Blog!

Well going to close off for the night. All have a peaceful one. Tomorrow brings a new day. GOOD NIGHT ALL!
Oh no i went shopping with daughter grandson and his girlfriend and missed the end of the game BUT from what i read it was terrible and glad i did.... Ok i must tell you about when my kids were growing up i would get a tree shortly after Thanksgiving... decorate it beautifully ( many times the kids would make those paper ropes and we would sting pop corn for tree while watching tv at night as we lived up in the country in Pa in a big farm house we owned... So the tree sat there i watered it BUT if i saw 1 pine needle drop off down it came and off i went into the woods to cut another one... So this 1 year i think i had at least 6 trees and finally my exhusband said to me I will go get one.. Welll he did with son and brought in 1 of those old scrub pines you could see thru and i cryed n cryed.. So yes i put it up decorated it with theses candle lights i had and old Christmas cards the antique decorations from my grandparents and things the kids made and it was beautiful!!! For my family these days Christmas is NOT about the giving we give all year round But having the closeness of family and friends to share and make new memories with... Homemade gifts are the best...
