Sandi and Shirley, I sure want to see 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". I read the book a couple of years ago, it was my favorite mystery of the year. One of my New Years goals is to read more books. I used to read 50-75 per year and I had a family to care for and worked. Now I'm lucky to get in 10 books.

I watched the New York Philharmonic New Year's Eve Concert on PBS last night. Wonderful--Gershwin and Bernstein selections. Then turned to a local station, the news and fell asleep on the NBC Times Square bunch. Woke up about 10 minutes before midnight, so saw the New Year in and stumbled off to bed. Heard some firecrackers off in the distance, but none close, as I drifted off again.

Sandi said...

Sunlight hitting the outside rails of the nest - pretty! Wish it was hitting on some eagles feathers as well.

My plans are work

Kay said...

Aw shucks, JUDY, good ol' Wally World, ever in search of the mighty dollar. Sorry you have to work today.

LYNNE1, I hear you on the reading. Same syndrome here. Used to read "constantly". Always have a book or two in the works, but it takes a lot longer to read one now. I find myself nodding off all too often !

grannyblt said...

We are to get rain today then the cold weather hits with snow for the rest of the week.
My plans today include going through the files to get ready for this year. I have mine and Mom's to do. If I had a large dining table it would be easier. Of course this chore has been on the to do list for a week....

Kay said...

The weather here is changing, too, SANDI. Supposed to have strong, damaging wind this afternoon. Some outdoor decorations are in jeopardy, I'm sure !

DanaMo said...

aw Kay enjoy your time with your 4 legged granddog!

Sandi-enjoy your tennis, hearing you talk about it makes me miss it!

Cleaning house is on tap for me too today and firming up my lesson plans for tomorrow, lucky Sandi gets one more day, but how can I complain? Some of our teachers are already hoping that storm move a little bit this way Sandi, but I prefer to go back and have a snow day in a week or two!

Sandi said...

Lynne, I didn't read the book before I went to see the movie. Some friends who had read the book and then saw the movie (and loved it) were concerned that I might get lost in the plot. So I did a Google search and found a chapter-by-chapter summary of the book and a run-down of all the characters and read that. It helped a lot! My husband, who had read nothing, left the theater with questions that I was able to answer from the reading I had done. Not sure that I would read the book now, but I will definitely read the other 2 in the series!

grannyblt said...

When I left TX and downsized, I gave the library over 600 books, and still have beaucoups in storage. I tend to nod off all too frequently also.

DanaMo said...

Annemarie is reading the Girl with the Dragon tattoo but she said it's slow. I'm thinking it may get better as she goes? I know a couple of people saw the movie, but have you also read the book?

Kay said...

LORI, so funny to read about the dogs sharing your bed while the kittens enjoy the new dog beds ! What an interesting menagerie !

CarolAnne said...

Morning again folks,
Sitting here w/the dogs (bubby still in bed) just watching the snow come down, while keeping an eye on the nest.

KAY - it looks to be a major snow, sure glad we aren't heading home today. Will be much colder tomorrow, but roads will be cleared by then. Back home is just getting rain, so we do not have to worry about getting the sidewalks cleared.

JUDYE - attempted my first video yesterday. Trying to upload it to my blog. Is it suppose to take FOREVER? Its not very long.

grannyblt said...

It was a pretty dark book. I have the others but haven't read them yet.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

Happy new year. I love you all.

Sandi said...

It was a pretty dark movie. My DIL warned me (I asked on FB for people's opinions about the movie before we went) about a lot of violent rape. There was one very violent rape scene but only one. I'm wondering if Lynnis saw the Swedish version of the movie or hasn't seen it at all and there is more rape in the book. I'll have to ask her when she comes.

Kay said...

Happy New Year, SHARON ! How did you all celebrate last night ?

Sandi said...

Morning Sharon! Are Andrew and Kelsey still staying with you or do you have your bed back?
Judy, sorry you have to go in to work today!

JudyEddy said...

CarolAnne the blog doesn't like video It is a PIA I only could get one or two min to up load and it would take for ever and sometime not even upload So I use Youtube which takes a while but not as long as the blog Did you download a program to do video or being a geek like me and use your camera and tripod

CarolAnne said...

JUDYE - It was with my camera, while we were out at the flowage yesterday.

Guess I could try youtube. Thats another new adventure!!

JudyEddy said...

OH I thought the nest you were recording duh moment and You tube is pretty easy you can upload and just walk away and then let it do what it wants no babysitting it I have uploaded 22 at once of Jordyn dance class FACEBOOK is easier with video than the blog

Kay said...

It's movin' on time for me. May be back between my usual morning activities and Malcolm's arrival. If not, have a good first day of the new year all !

Giving thanks for the blessings of 2011 not the least of which is all of you and the lifeline you represent to me ! Your prayers helped me through some sad losses and a couple of ill health bouts. I love you ! Looking forward to seeing many of you face to face this year ! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

BBL, it is time to get on with my Sunday.......

Sandi said...

Wow - wind is picking up at the nest big time! Gotta get ready for tennis!! TTFN all!

JudyEddy said...

Its almost time for me to head out the door for work At least its at 830-530 day don't like the 10-7 at all no wind down time hardly for the next two weeks same schedule 830-530 I can live with that OK BBL OTWIG HAGD SYAL

DanaMo said...

Ew...Sandi, I don't think I will let my daughter finish reading it. Doesn't sound appropriate for her at all!!!!

Sandi said...

DMo, You may want to do a Google search on the book and read about the premise of the story line. There is lots of violence, esp. directed toward women. I see my 8th grade girls reading anything and everything and I don't have a 13 year old daughter, so it's not my call. But you may want to offer some input after you've done a little research. You know Annamarie.

stronghunter said...

Good morning,

I see some discussion about the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movie. It is very much an R-rated movie with some very graphic scenes--the rape scene especially. Kathryn said it was worse in the book. Awful man, but she gets her revenge.

Kathryn had read the book--she does audio books when she commutes. She has read the others in the series as well. I haven't read any of them yet.

It was much easier for her to follow the story than for me. I am glad to know that others had trouble following it. It wasn't just me!

stronghunter said...

I agree with Sandi. Do some research on this book. The movie was quite graphic, and, according to Kathryn there is more graphic sex in the book than in the movie.

hedgie said...

Good first AM of 2012! I missed the eagle visit by only minutes!
Gotta join in saying that I am an avid reader, too, with at lwast two going at once...but I have lost book reading time to real life reading with all you precious friends!!

Hope everyone has a fun day. CarolAnne, so cool that your trip home tomorrow will not be hampered by the storm. Here it would take days to get the plowing properly done!

Frigid temps coming this way, but luckily the snow is supposed to stay west of the divide! Western MD due to get a bunch----ski resorts will be habby, for sure. Artificial stuff leaves a lot to be desired, I'm sure.

hedgie said...

Gee....how to warm up quiche without the crust getting soggy....guess just a low oven...might not eat for awhile yet!

hedgie said...

That movie and book don't sound like my cuppa tea, at all.

Glad you enjoyed The Help, DanaWV. Christie and I sure did.

Costume Lady said...

HAPPY NEW YEAR, ONCE AGAIN...
I nearly had a hissy fit, reading Sandi's 8-14 inches of snow! As Lynn said, probably won't hit here. Frostburg and Mt. Storm has frequent snow most of the Winter. I have too much to do this week to have snow get in my way!

HAVE A BLESSED SUNDAY AND NEW YEAR♥

Costume Lady said...

LYNN, I am with you, rape scenes leave me shaken and nauseous:(

CarolAnne said...

Our snow is slowing down & the wind is picking up. Only creature out & about so far is a fat squirrel stealing corn from the deer feeder and nuthatches visiting the bird feeder.

Will have to wait for JUDYE to return from work. Tried Youtube as she suggested for my video, but now can't find it on YouTube. Oh well - definitely not a computer geek here. LOL

hedgie said...

Grrrrrr.....I am ticked off. Hagerstown newspaper is removing 4 of my favorite comics effective tomorrow. NOT FAIR! Now will have to remember to go look at them online everyday.....geesh.
Mary Worth, Rose is Rose, Sally Forth, The Wizard of Id.......

wvgal_dana said...

Good 2012 my Eagle Friends (:

Does anyone know when the Rose Bowl Parade is going to be on tv?

hedgie said...

Wanda, I would love a winter with NO snow!!!!

CarolAnne---can't help with the video problems---it's all Greek to me.

Our "feels like" temp is to be below 10° by tomorrow evening. :(

CarolAnne said...

We will have to organize an 'OCCUPY" group and protest on your behalf, Lynn.

Lori O. said...

DanaWV, the Rose Parade will be on tomorrow. It's never held on a Sunday.

wvgal_dana said...

@Lori That you Lori I went forward on the tv into tomorrow and still can not find the time the Rose Bowl Parade is suppose to air on tv. If anyone knows please tell me Mother wants to see it and so do I. Thank you.

I will be leaving here today to go to Mothers. To fix the New Years Dinner.

T-Bird said...

Is it still morning? : ) Good morning. Happy New Year everyone!! Too much partying last night. I had to sleep in. I was definitely up way past my bedtime.

Janet said...

Good morning. 8:54 a.m. Nashville time and HAPPY NEW YEAR! Here's to getting to know everyone a little better in the coming months! Hope everyone had a safe and nice evening. It is 60 here in Nashville (WAAAAAYYYYY too warm) but I think normal temps are on the way back per our weather prognosticator! Make it a super day, ya'll.

T-Bird said...

For some reason, on my mind this morning is, to live smarter not harder what ever the heck that means because I'm not a partier but I could sure use a little more smartness in my life. : )

Janet said...

T-bird: way back when one of my favorite teachers used to tell us work smarter, not harder. So much truth in that. I recently took a class (intro to Thai Yoga Massage) and the Tao of Pooh was discussed (book I will own soon) and the basics I got was "round peg, round hole. square peg, square hole. do not force the square peg into the round hole" work with things not against. I like that.

wvgal_dana said...

Good 2012 Janet and Thelma.

Thelma I don't think you need more smartness. Probably just means like you said. Continue to live "smart" or "wise".

That is how I think Sharon lives and I think of you that way too. (:

grannyblt said...

Oh no, Hedgie--Mary Worth has been in the papers for many many years. And I really liked Sally Forth. The local paper doesn't carry those. I went from two pages of comics to barely one when I gave up the big city life. Even the Pittsburgh paper is no longer delivered to this area. Somehow going online to read the paper just isn't the same...

Janet said...

good morning and happy 2012 dana.

sometimes in life, we make things so much more difficult than they need be! :) i know i'm guilty of this!

hedgie said...

DanaWV, the parade is on at 11AM tomorrow.

Thelma, we all know you are wise and smart! I think Janet said it well, too!

Lynne1---agree with you that online paper reading is lousy! Being a journalist at heart, I like to have the papers in my hand!
I get two dailies. The paper cutting the comics is trying to go from two pages of them to one---they said they still couldn't do it, but will scatter some on other pages. UGH!
And can't believe they would leave people hanging on the Mary Worth storyline!!

wvgal_dana said...

Thank you Lynn I will share the 11am time for tomorrow with Mother.

I don't like reading books or watching movies that show or talk about rape.

My Daughter use to love to read this one author-name escapes me right now. She said Mom why do they have to put incest always in the book. She stopped reading the author.

Janet said...

YOu know, I get the Wed. and Sun. paper and don't read a thing in them. I give them to my neighbor to read, elderly lady. I get the coupons. But books; I love books in hand. I think someday maybe I'll try one of those new ebook gadgets, but I don't know. I love the feel of a book in my hand, the weight, the smell, don't have to turn it on, just open it....open it and fall into the story which waited for you without battery/electric power, etc.

hedgie said...

Today is game day....last game of another miserable season. Thank goodness. Doesn't matter stat-wise if we win or lose, but I surely hope that the SKINS show up and not the SINKS, and pound Vick into the turf!

CarolAnne said...

Janet - agree w/you on experiencing a book. But I now have a Kindle and love the text to speech feature. Use to be just when I got to a good part, it was time to go start a meal or fold laundry, etc. Now I just switch the story to "speech" and continue to listen while I do whatever chore demands my attention.

Janet said...

All righty my new friends, popping outta here for now. Hope everyone has a quiet, peaceful day ahead. I'm taking down the tree, the last strand of lights and restoring NORMAL to this house...lol. Hoppin John and corn bread on the dinner menu if anyone is interested, lol. Colder weather on the way, may be hot tub time tonight! Later, ya'll..

hedgie said...

DanaWV----was it maybe Eugenia Price? Loved her Civil War era books---don't know if she did other genres---but there was always incest and misogyny in them to an extreme. UGH!

hedgie said...

Janet, I always read in the tub, and I would NEVER trust using a Kindle there!!! I don't even read hardbacks in case I drop the book in the water! Paperbacks only there!!

hedgie said...

CarolAnne---what kind of speech is it? Electronic-sounding, or does it sound like a normal voice??

CarolAnne said...

LOL Lynn, that's where the "text to speech" would come in handy. Set it up, lean back, close your eyes and relax while listening to the book. :o)

Janet said...

Hedgie: I never take baths, only showers. So reading in there isn't happening. I do most of my reading now on my lunch break at work or while waiting for my youngest to get out of school in the p.m. As for the hot tub, no no reading in there, i like to just lie back and watch the stars and night skies.... :) enjoy your day bye!

CarolAnne said...

Lynn, speech sounds normal. Each time you can choose male or female voice, and adjust the speed of the voice. Not robotic sounding at all.

CarolAnne said...

Gotta go stir the pea soup on the woodstove (using up ham bone from Christmas) and go look out all the different windows to check on the snow.

hedgie said...

Wind is picking up---sure you can hear it at the nest. Time to turn down the volume!

hedgie said...

That's neat, C/A. LOL---the voice might lull me to sleep in the tub!

Your power isn't out, is it???

wvgal_dana said...

Lynn V. C. Andrews keeps coming to my mind. Not sure though. Does her books have incest in them?

wvgal_dana said...

Yes I just googled it- the books where V. C. ANDREWS books...seem like each one had incest in them. Like I said she stopped reading the books because of that.

CarolAnne said...

Lynn - so far we have power, but have filled water containers just in case.

We pretty much rough it when we come here in winter. As the really cold weather approaches we shut everything down including the frig & remove anything else that might freeze. We bring a cooler with just what we need for the weekend and leave the cooler outside so everything stays cold. Though we have propane heat, we seldom use it as the wood stove heats this little place just fine.
If we forget anything we improvise or do without.

Lolly said...

Good morning and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Went to bed shortly after midnight to our closest neighbor sending up fireworks but it did not last long. I know their girls were enjoying it.

Time for me to get ready for church now but wanted to say good morning.

CarolAnne, you fooled me. I did not read carefully the caption on the carved driveway eagle and thought you had seen an eagle. Duh! Now I want that over my driveway...maybe with a hawk for Hawkwood! ☺

Bye....see you after church!

hedgie said...

Just had two pileated's on the tree right outside the sunroom....moved to get a shot and off they went. One was on each side and they were looking to see what the other one was doing!

Happy New Year from the Inner Harbor!

Had a great New Years night...gonna have some breakfast and head home....what. a pretty first day of the year

wvgal_dana said...

Where are my manners?? Sorry.

I want to thank the earlier crowd for comments on the eagles arriving at the nest this morning.

hedgie said...

DanaWV, I only remember ever reading one Andrews book MANY years ago.....didn't care for her, but don't recall the storyline. I think it had something to do with an attic.

CarolAnne, "roughing" it doesn't have to be rough as you prove!! I know if the power is out (winter) here, I can cook on top of the woodstove, too----but choices are somewhat limited!! But I also move the grill into a convenient location to get to in snow, so I can do my meat on it. Of course, hot dogs and baked pots go right into the firebox!!!

wvgal_dana said...

Yes Lynn that was called Flowers in The Attic.

God Bless All OF You and Your Families in this 2012 New Year.

If I am not on until tomorrow eve. Don't worry. ((((HUGS TO ALL)))

hedgie said...

DanaWV...my Hallmark guide doesn't show the parade being on.....and 8am would be 5am CA time so it couldn't be live parade.
