Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

WOW!!!

Lynne2 said...

aww, it's a GIRL!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

That was intense for me!!! Just imagine the mom!!

Lynne2 said...

I know! She's looking tired, but she'll get up shortly, wash her baby, the baby will be up in no time having breakfast!

Lori O. said...

It's the biggest high when you're there in the barn and it's your horse!

Lynne I can't get on NBG either. Maybe it's best. Things have a way of working out. Wish I could jet into the future & everything is happy - the eaglets are grown and Lib is back!

Lynne2 said...

I've only seen it once in person. It's pretty amazing!

Lynne2 said...

wow, the gang's all there! Geesh!

Sissy, wait til you see the baby try to stand for the first time!

Lynne2 said...

kinda wishing mom would get up and greet the baby.....

Lynne2 said...

I've only seen it once in person. It's pretty amazing!

Lynne2 said...

look at her looking at the baby!

Lynne2 said...

umbilical cord....she still has to deliver the placenta....right Lori?

Lynne2 said...

looks like that might have been it

Lynne2 said...

LORI!!! help me out here....they have to make sure the placenta is all out right? or possible infection....

Lynne2 said...

I've only seen this in person one time!

Lynne2 said...

yeah, thank you for taking the blanket off, maybe she can get up better now!

Lori O. said...

Yes Lynne, placenta must pass fully intact or risk infaction. They'll give her a shot of oxytocin to induce contractions. In fact, they will save the placenta for the vet to fully inspect it.
The best part of the Mom knickering to the foal and nudging it to nurse.

Lynne2 said...

I know, sure wish I could hear!

Lori O. said...

Baby horse is fine as long as it eats within 2 hours to get colostrum.
If placenta looks fine (if vet is there and says placenta is okay) they won't give her that awful cramping shot. That is the pain.

You also want the baby to try and get up on its own because all that banging around and falling helps get the junk out of its lungs.

Lynne2 said...

oh she's up and checking out her new baby!!!

Red said...

Good morning everyone. Stormy stormy day in north Alabama. We've been under tornado warnings all morning with several touching down around the area and this afternoon should be worse. I'll be keeping alert to whats going on here.

Lynne2 said...

Saw that Red, glad to know you are OK and PLEASE stay that way!!

Lynne2 said...

We've been watching a foal birth this morning! go back before the split to find the link, baby is trying to get up!

Lynne2 said...

Lori, I almost had a heart attack watching the foal I was there to see be born....when he tried to get up and CRASH!!! But the owner assured me that was all normal and necessary.

Lori O. said...

God Bless you with safety today Red.

Have a peaceful day gang. Are we all gonna cry together when/if they take the NBG babies? Yes, it's probably best, but tears will fall anyway.

Thanks for the companionship this morning. I love you! Hugs, Glo, Lynne, Sissy, Kay, DanaMo.

Lynne2 said...

Red, I see you are in the 90% chance of tornado developement today....UGH

Lynne2 said...

Love and Hugs Lori!!

Lynne2 said...

Red, please with MRS RED A HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Lynne2 said...

WVEC has just posted that they are working on the live feed problem at NBG

Lynne2 said...

Foal is up! sort of!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

OMG! She is up!! Wobbly but up!

Lynne2 said...

Foal is down! Human...leave the foal alone....she can do it herself!

Lynne2 said...

well, mom has now peed.....been a great morning for horse bodily functions.....

Lynne2 said...

Mom is trying to deliver the placenta. So pretty.

Lynne2 said...

I must say, I am a bit irritated that they keep trying to stand the foal up. We are not in the danger time zone yet......

Lori O. said...

Lynne, they probably just want to make sure the foal has a suckle reflex, then they can go in the house and watch on the camera.

Lynne2 said...

OK Lori.....I can live with that!

Red said...

Funny story about the cake I baked for my wife yesterday. I hid it and when she got home last night she looked around and said she had hoped I had made the cake. I said I did but you cannot have any until tomorrow. She did not like that answer so I told her if she can find it she can have some. She spent almost 30 minutes looking for it. Then she started begging and using her womanly charms on me. I gave in and told her where it was. lol Charm always works on me. haha

Lynne2 said...

the baby says I'd love to go out in the sunshine but I can't make these crazy legs work right!

Lynne2 said...

LOL LOL RED!!!!!

Lynne2 said...

WVEC: DGIF biologists have decided that it is in the best interest of the eaglets to remove them from the nest and relocate them to the Wildlife Center of Virginia. The removal operation will take place at 10 a.m.

Lynne2 said...

my cam is back up at NBG

Lynne2 said...

Dad in the nest

Lynne2 said...

he poofed, but the eaglets looked like they were eating. Must have brought a fish or something in.

Red said...

The tree climber will have a rough day up there today. Pretty windy,.

floralgirl said...

That's going to be one confused male eagle, no mate and then no chicks.

glo said...

Its all so darn unbelievable. They will all survive. dad is already in whatever kind of grief and Eagle does experience. He knows full well why she isn't at the nest, whether you want to call it instinctual or intellectual. He would soon be physically exhausted as well and may or may not have succeeded in being successful with all this on 1 bird. If I could talk to the animals There is so much i would want to say to this Dad about now and to a few other eagles this year too. I am going to the grocery in the rain. I do not need to see this. "Gentle spirits and hugs around" for those who watched this beautiful pair and those who didn't but care.

Red said...

I agree Megan, I think I would give him a chance to do it on his own first.

Red said...

But I guess they know best.

Lolly said...

Good morning! A bit delayed getting on. Clicked the link to see the little foal. Got there after it was born. Had my first laugh of the day watching it do the splits. Hard to leave that cam. Thanks, Lynne!

Can not get on NBG, just as well.

Leaving in half an hour to get beautiful. Gonna get my do done! Wahoo!

Bright sunshine today, no rain in the forecast. Fire is 90% contained! Sooner than expected, but the cooler weather, some rain, and high humidity has helped. It is presently 62 here....feels wonderful.

Have to go now. Need to get half way decent to go get beautiful.

Have a great day! ((((Hugs)))

floralgirl said...

I know they are doing what they feel is best for the survival of the eaglets. I'm not 2nd guessing them, they are experts, I'm not. I believe they will be raised with the goal to be released into the wild. As long as that happens, it's all good. We have enough captive birds in cages in this world.
I just feel bad for the male:(

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

Good morning everyone.

TEAM LIBERTY!!!!

Lynne2 said...

they were explaining on the discussion last night how difficult it would get for the dad as the eaglets grow. They are just now beginning to feed themselves, but will need SO MUCH food in the next couple of months that with 3 mouths to feed, it might get too difficult for him to keep up. It sure is going to be tough for poor Dad....

hedgie said...

Morning all. Have not read blog.

In case no one has posted:
WVEC: DGIF biologists have decided that it is in the best interest of the eaglets to remove them from the nest and relocate them to the Wildlife Center of Virginia. The removal operation will take place at 10 a.m.

I can't get cam to play----many can't.....good luck....hurry to try...almost 10 now.

Lynne2 said...

also they said with probable limited food coming in with only one parent, that the chicks may "turn" on each other.....

floralgirl said...

All 3 of the eaglets have eaten some of the fish on their own, the male did not stay to feed them.

Lynne2 said...

be still my heart....why can I only see 2 chicks? I hope the 3rd is behind one of them

Lynne2 said...

yeah i see it

floralgirl said...

All 3 are there

Red said...

Guess I was lucky to get the cam up when I did. I'm watching.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

Wow, the green on our cam is beautiful! Not going to watch NBG, just can't.

HAPPY BIRTHDAYS TO MAULEY DONNA, JO'S SUSAN AND RED'S DIANE!!!

floralgirl said...

Norfolk Botanical Garden:
This morning the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will be removing the 3 eaglets and send them to the Wildlife Center of Virginia.
There they will be raised to be released to the wild when they are old enough.

DGIF consultanted with the partners and many experts about this situation. They received feedback about a variety of approaches and arrived at the decision to remove them. One option discussed was to leave them and see if the father could continue to raise them alone. It is possible he could, but it is also very possible he could not continue to provide enough food as they grow and need a higher calorie count. There was a concern it would reach a point of no return and it would be difficult to remove the eaglets. It would present the problem of being too late to remove them for their survival. There is a reason it takes two parents to raise the eaglets.

Lynne2 said...

she's next to the mare, but I can't see her well....but looks like she is trying to get into nursing position!

floralgirl said...

Norfolk Botanical Garden:
Another option would be to try to foster them out to other nests. That would require finding three nests with eaglets at the exact right age. There is also the concern the foster parents may reject them.
DGIF has the legal responsibility for the welfare of these eaglets and has made the decision to remove them, deeming this is in the best interest of the eaglets

floralgirl said...

10:10.....the male is flying overhead. Julian is in the bucket on his way up

Lori O. said...

Too bad we can't fix up Norfolk Dad with our beautiful Belle.

Lynne2 said...

the foal is laying on the stall floor. GET UP AND EAT!!!

floralgirl said...

Norfolk Botanical Garden:
Since this cam has made this eagle family so famous, the decisions are taken very carefully to ensure the best option for the chicks.
We will watch the removal process this morning in its entirety

wvgal_dana said...

Good Morning and Happy Birthday to the many having birthdays today.

Lynne2 said...

Welcome back DanaWV...how are you?

floralgirl said...

Norfolk Botanical Garden:

gotta find some tissues...

floralgirl said...

Okay, I will, I had to take an early lunch to justify sitting in front of the computer-

Norfolk Botanical Garden:
The Wildlife Center of Virginia is in Waynesborough Virginia. The 2008 eaglet with Avian Pox "Buddy" was taken there. They are very good about sharing information about the progress of Buddy and I expect we will get frequent updates about these eaglets as well

Mema Jo said...

I guess that is the Vet with the horses now......

Mema Jo said...

No it isn't..... The vet is a she..

Back to the 3 little Rebels

Lynne2 said...

(((HUGS))) F'Ma.....I'm grateful these three will be getting the chance to live. I'll dedicate this sad mission to our lost Paddy O'Joy who didn't get that chance.

Mema Jo said...

The foal is 1 step forward 2 steps to the side.... Love it!

paula eagleholic said...

I see they have decided to remove the chicks from the NBG nest...crew is in place now to start. They are going to the Wildlife Center of Virginia, where Buddy is.

FuzzleMT said...

Oh, so sorry! Didn't realize you are at work - I can catch up later - appreciate what you've sent so far . . .

floralgirl said...

No worries, I work at home and I am my own boss:)

Lynne2 said...

they brought some feed for mom and are trying to get the baby heading in the right direction....it's not going well!

floralgirl said...

Norfolk Botanical Garden:
The three eaglets will be raised together at WCV. The intention is to release them (they are in good health) so human contact will be minimal.

Lynne2 said...

I guess she doesn't WANT breakfast yet! Oh what I wouldn't give to feel that soft baby muzzle.....

NatureNut said...

Gotta head on down the road, but hard to leave right now.
Saw the mare standing in back of stall, but never saw foal---guess it is back in corner.

NBG has certainly acted quickly. I know it's in the best interest of eaglets' growth, but I'll miss watching them. May be updates like they did with Buddy.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Donna, Red's Dianne, & Jo's Susan!

BBL Plz, St. Francis, do what you can to help all our animals

Lynne2 said...

Mama appears to be getting upset and not wanting baby to nurse. Wonder if she is a first time mom?

paula eagleholic said...

It is certainly nice to see that Dad has been feeding them...and I see they are feeding themselves...that is a good thing.

Scott said...

For all of my friends that have been watching the Norfolk Eagles. The three babies are now being moved to The Wildlife Center of Virginia, a fantastic center. The president of this facility is a friend of my family and they are top notch.

Hi, just looking in for a moment. My seniors are working on research paper stuff. The due date is Friday. Early turn-in is today.

I see that they are about to remove the Norfolk eaglets from the nest. Oh, I see a rope.

wvgal_dana said...

There's the rope

floralgirl said...

One of the climbing ropes just appeared. Julian is just under the nest.

Costume Lady said...

GOOD MORNING...
Looks like this sad story will have a happy ending. I'm glad they are going to take these eaglets to Buddy's home...we know they will get excellent care there!
My thoughts were that Norfolk Daddy would suffer health-wise, if he tried to care for these babes by himself.
HELLO, JULIEN!

Lynne2 said...

SIGH....well, here we go.....

hedgie said...

Julian---or someone----is to the nest....

floralgirl said...

They are not thrilled to see him:) Giving him heck.

Costume Lady said...

Needs to put some gloves on!

Lynne2 said...

oh don't they look so ferocious!

Costume Lady said...

All 3 have their mouths open:)

paula eagleholic said...

Oh look how fierce the eaglets are this morning!

Costume Lady said...

Love a man with a tool belt;)

wvgal_dana said...

No they are not happy someone but Dad or Mom is near them. At least they aren't pecking him in the back.

paula eagleholic said...

Mema Jo said...

Smile everyone - picture taking time. They don't look very happy this time seeing the human in the hard hat........ lol

hedgie said...

He took pics before he gets started.

paula eagleholic said...

Wow they are still giving him heck!

hedgie said...

Lynne, I couldn't get the horse cam to open.

wvgal_dana said...

One tells the others "if he takes one he takes us all" lol

floralgirl said...

Haha they're probably thinking, not this guy again...

Costume Lady said...

DANA, good to see youu! Do you know that MAMA was killed when she ran into an airplane?

Lynne2 said...

Vet is holding mare's head, other person steering the foal, but she won't nurse.

wvgal_dana said...

I did get to see the foal. Thank you all for that link. It was up and steady on legs yet.

Mema Jo said...

OK - who wants to be first??????

wvgal_dana said...

No Wanda thanks for telling me...I knew there was an intruder. She came back but wouldn't sit. Wow eagle nest sure having their time of it this year.

hedgie said...

SInce they made the decision so quickly, it's a miracle that Nuckles was available to do it right away----of course, it doesn't take too long, so they can move on to another job before long.

floralgirl said...

Lynne2 said...

I think I will turn the cam off when 3 is out. I don't want to be here when dad returns to the nest....

floralgirl said...

A little protest from the last chick, and it's in the bag.

wvgal_dana said...

Last one maybe he got 2nd one into the red bag?

paula eagleholic said...

Very nice with the last one...that was quick

floralgirl said...

The 2nd one went into the red bag, Dana.

For all those with questions about the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro, Ed Clark, President of the Wildlife Center, will be on the moderated forum today between 3:00 - 4:00 PM.

Lynne2 said...

Godspeed, little eaglets. Look forward to hearing updates, but the cam is going off. It will be too much even for me to see dad come back...

hedgie said...

DanaWV., glad you are feeling better.
Mom at NBG was killed yesterday when she ran into a landing plane. Intruder not involved. Apparently the papa just missed the plane.

Lynne2 said...

and they are really struggling with the mare who doesn't want to nurse the foal, and the foal who is refusing to nurse. UGH.

floralgirl said...

Norfolk Botanical Garden:
They have placed them in carriers and an DGIF Conservation Officer will transport them to the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro, VA (misspelled it earlier)

Mema Jo said...

The little foal has a mind of its own.. They are doing a lot of
guiding and showing him where to
nurse.... I thought they had him
in place but 'no' he keeps following the humans.... I hope he gets it soon!

wvgal_dana said...

I'm glad they are helping the eaglets. It will be hard on Dad. The feeding it going to get crazy and he probably would not be able to keep up.

Thanks to the Center where they are going. God be with them. God be with Eagle Dad.

Eaglets to be removed from nest

Is there ever an instance when they've left one eaglet for the single parent to rear and removed any others?

wvgal_dana said...

I know it shows sound on the foal cam but do you all get sound?

Mema Jo said...

Excellent reading and very comforting to know they are going there.

Happy Birthday Buddy

Thank you, Megan . . .

Good morning, all. I just heard about the Norfolk eagles. I know virtually nothing about the needs of eaglets at this age, so I thought I'd ask all of you experienced folks.

They jumped in so quickly to rescue the babies, without giving the dad a chance to handle it. Do you all think the dad would've been able to finish raising the babies on his own? I feel so bad that within little more than 24 hours he's lost his mate and babies. Would've like to have given him a closely-observed chance to continue raising the babies. What are your thoughts?

FuzzleMT said...

DanaWV: I was worried about you finding out about NBG mama - are you ok?

good question Shcike, not sure if they considered that or not....seems almost doable though.

Mema Jo said...

Carol Anne - I don't know of any other incidents of this nature. In fact what we are seeing today is all new to me and a first time happening.
This year has really been full of
new happenings - even at our own
nest at NCTC.

floralgirl said...

NORFOLK, VA (April 27, 2011) – The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) has confirmed that the female of the eagle pair nesting at Norfolk Botanical Garden was killed by an airplane strike yesterday morning. VDGIF wildlife biologists, acting on concerns that the adult male will not be able to provide sufficient food for the three five-week-old eaglets, determined that the birds should be removed from the nest. While the male may be able to meet the needs of the chicks in the near term, the amount of food they will require as they grow will increase exponentially, likely exceeding the hunting capacity of even the most capable provider.

Lynne2 said...

I don't have sound Dana.

paula eagleholic said...

Turtledove, they are some posting some points in relation to your question on the moderated chat right now...

floralgirl said...

According to VDGIF Biologist Stephen Living, “The agency recognizes that there is a very high degree of public investment in these birds. Thousands of people worldwide have watched these eagles over the years and followed their progress.”Living continued, “Without intervention, it is all but certain that one or more of these eaglets would not survive the next three months. Pulling the birds and sending them to the Wildlife Center gives them their best chance. The birds are already old enough to know that they are eagles and to recognize their siblings. Maintaining them as a family unit and releasing them together when they are ready to go will certainly improve their survival potential.”

floralgirl said...

At WCV the eaglets’ health will be evaluated and monitored closely throughout their treatment. They will be placed in an artificial nest that has been constructed in the Center’s 200-foot eagle flight cage. Other adult Bald Eagle patients may also be in this enclosure. While the chicks will be separated by a physical barrier from direct contact with other eagles, the eaglets will be able to see other eagles flying and feeding. As they begin to fledge, the barrier will be removed and the young eagles will have full access to the long enclosure, to build their wing strength and to learn to fly. The goal would be to get the young eagles ready for release back into the wild this summer.
