Saturday

The perseverance of these eagles is best noticed today, as the snow continues to fall and the nest continues to accumulate more snow.  Remember that this is more than a month earlier than the last time weather caused disaster for the nesting season.  Even if they give up on this egg, (which I doubt) there is plenty of time for additional eggs.  Keep your fingers crossed.

New thread.

thanks for the call over Ceil....going to get another cup of coffee, I will be like Jack Hanna soon

stronghunter said...

Wow, Ceil, you are quick. I hope he answers. I would like to think he's open-minded enough to listen. I am sure he has assistants who gather info for him.

stronghunter said...

Thanks Ceil and Steve.

stronghunter said...

Isn't this the first time a black bear giving birth has been seen on camera? Lots of people can learn from Lily.

ceil said...

I hope he answers also. Been too the Columbus zoo It was snowing and we had a good time.
Margy I am going this time. LOL

stronghunter said...

And since so many people watched the birth, there are lots of us to set Jack straight.

We are in some really heavy bands of snow again here and at the nest. Going to be another very long day. We will easily have 30" of snow if it keeps snowing all day like they say it will.
I feel so lucky to still have electric so far.
We are exhausted but determined not to lose the gh, had we not stayed up all nite cleaning it off, it would already have collapsed. The roof is the next thing to deal with. Ain't this fun?
Heading back out with coffee... and cookies

normabyrd said...

Thanks STEVE for the SNOWY THREAD! & THANKS for your words of WISDOM---You have made my day much nicer!!---LUV YA!

stronghunter said...

Okay, got the live feed back.

It is snowing so hard here.

Thanks for the new thread, Steve.

The dedication and perseverance shown by Liberty and Belle continues to amaze me. I have nothing but pure admiration for them.

MORNIN' CEIL--MITS--SHIRLEY!
MEGAN--I truly wish I lived closer---I would at least bring you cookies!--ho!---PLEASE DON'T OVER DO---OK?

carolinabeachmom said...

Hey there NORMA and all others. I finally peeked in again and cauhfg up on the blog to see what was happening. Norma, you had better watch out you don't fall in the snow and disappear!

My heart goes out to you all in this snowy mess. May you all keep your electic on and be careful shoveling too much at one time. Wish I could be up there to help you out.

stronghunter said...

My weather radio has not made a sound through all of this. I wonder if it is still set correctly. It should have gone crazy by now.

carolinabeachmom said...

I do feel alot better seeing one of the eagles on the nest and reading that they are both ok. That is the most important!

normabyrd said...

PAULA---Wouldn't we all do the same?----MOTHER NATURE is a good teacher!

glo said...

Very early in the season. Plenty of time for more eggs. In fact we all know she either laid one last night or is due anytime given the date of the first egg. I agree she will in fact sit there and incubate. We may get a miracle "which is definatly what it would be" or we may never actually know once we do get a hatch which eggs did or did not come and when. Only hoping and praying them thru the storm and a family to raise when all is said and done.

I too remember Tesoro sitting for 50 days caring for that egg, AND I also remember Maine either that year or the one before that with all the drama at their nest. Frigid horrible weather and tremendous storms. Pretty much no hope that any egg would hatch and surprise surprise they hatched 2. A NorEaster took them both out a week or so later which was horrible but when no one thought an egg could have survived all that cold, snow and lack of incubation, there were 2 eaglets.

So ya just never know. And that nestbowl wherever it is is still being cared for as best they know how.

normabyrd said...

MORNIN' CANDY---Our day is always nicer when you drop by---Do you folks have any SNOW?

normabyrd said...

MORNIN' GLO & DEX!---Pray your weather is better than ours!!

carolinabeachmom said...

I hate to answer you NORMA. We have had nothing but more rain. Prtty soon we'll just be a swamp area. Water is laying all over. My heart and prayers go out to all of your and our eagles. I think if there is any snow it is west of us and then north east.

carolinabeachmom said...

I mean north west

hedgie said...

Shirley, my NOAA radio is the same. If I put it on continuous, it's there squawking, but no alerts/warnings, etc. No red light flashing....so it's them, not us!!
Signing on here on PC to post pics to my blog.
It was my understanding that the Lily cam is the first "in-the-wild" witness to a birth.

Lolly said...

Have been reading the blog and now having trouble getting the cam up. I have had it up, but just have the turning arrows now. Drat!

Morning! Nothing "good" about it for you nor for Belle and Lib.

So sad to hear there was snow in the egg cup. Was hoping for insulation. Cam up now!!! Scared me!

Also, glad you reported there was a changing of the guard. Checked on BWE too. The last picture that was on their cam last night was scary to say the least.

Megan, Megan, Megan....how I wish we could all march on over to your place and help out. Jack and I would be there in an instant to help. Please know there is love, hugs and prayers there with you.

glo said...

Megan has posted a picture of her greenhouse on facebook. Perhaps its on her blog too. Every bit as hard to look at as our nest. I am anxious to see someone post that the storm is letting up and heading out to sea. :-(

carolinabeachmom said...

Good morning Lolly. Yur sun sure brightens up this blog.

glo said...

Yes Megan has pictures under her Whatever Blog.

stronghunter said...

I e-mailed Jack Hanna, too. He might as well hear from a bunch of us.

Lolly said...

Good morning, Candy. Doing what little I can to brighten up the day!

Ceil, I have been smiling and chuckling over Jack Hanna. You emailed him! You go, Girl!☺

stronghunter said...

Time to go make some breakfast. Also have some work to get done.

CarolAnne said...

Morning again, Thanks for the earlier reassurance that they can get food from the open river. Here's a smile for you all. I first happened upon the blog and followed along for awhile. Then later discovered the live cam. At the top it says : Conservation: EagleCam. In my excitement in finding the cam, I thought it said CONVERSATION: Eaglecam. And I thought, How appropriate, all that conversation about eagles. lol

Lolly said...

Good for you, Shirley! I will do the same. Have been wearing my Lily t-shirt and feeling special that I was there for the birth. ha!

Lolly said...

Schicke...how funny! Welcome to the blog. This is the friendliest, best-est blog around. Some real knowledgeable eagle folks and some of us who just love eagles, but are just learning.

CarolAnne said...

Thanks Lolly, We have a pair of eagles at the cottage lake. They have adapted well to the summer people and can often be seen swooping down in the wake of boaters catching fish that are churned up in the boats wake. Apparently they get enough that way, as a pair of loons on the lake always manage to raise their young there too.

Mits said...

I had left my puter on all night, so I shut it down to refresh everything and restarted it.

But now I can't get the live feed to work right.

Kept reloading it, and for a while it was "up" except that twirling arrow kept twirling...

Now it won't do that either... I checked other "Outdoor" sites, but they won't load either. Guess they're having power problems.

Noticed BWE and Norfolk came through the storm with flying colors. Haven't checked any others yet.

I did what Megan suggested, put live feed on IE (and also had still cam on there) and moved blog to Firefox...believe it or not I had continuous live stream for quite some time

I'm not going to be blogging on here much,
just please all know my heart is joined with all of yours through this nest crisis, and all the personal difficulties many are having with this historic storm

Wanda you are so right. Belle and Lib are the best. I still remember that March storm. I thought she was a goner and Lib kept hitting her to get the ice off.

Hello everyone -- can't really say good morning.

Steve, thank you for the new thread and for the reminder not to get too discouraged too soon.

Very funny story, Schicke. I think we all needed a laugh this morning. Welcome to the best blog ever.

Megan, I do wish I could be there to help with the gh. Our thoughts are with you. All the flowers in Spring will be especially beautiful this year.

Still snowing heavily here. Darth agreed, thank you Lord, to hire a hs teen to clear snow. With his age and health it would kill him -- Darth, that is.

Have cleaned myself up just in case we lose electric or I have to be rescued -- don't want to go out all stinky.

Guess Jack Hannah doesn't watch the Lily cam. I also hope he will respond with appreciation for learning what really happens.

Okay, going to use my time reading about domestic/family violence -- new topic for this semester requested by a student.

Everyone please stay safe and warm.

Best thoughts for your egg situation.

Leaving for a while to read the paper, but will try to keep the cam going,

Jo, it would be worth driving to WV in this blizzard to see you sled down the street.

Margy, hope you don't have to go in today or tomorrow. Maybe people will stay in and not be stuuuuuupid!

Put lots of seeds out yesterday morning thinking critters would burrow under the snow. No customers yet.

Hi again to everyone I missed along the snowy path.

Haven't had much luck with cams this morning so back to reading.

Haven't looked at the nest in a while and don't think I will for now. Just got back from Wal-Mart. City of Bedford has done a superb job of cleaning the streets and my neighbor across the street plowed out the driveway!

Lolly, Can relate to Lily as well. Have had bear on cottage roof for an hour in the middle of the night. And then sat in yard munching on corn in deer feeder. Also had opportunity to see Mama bear & 6 (YES SIX) cubs out in the woods. Not sure WV at the moment would be my idea of heaven lol - Though will remember not to whine when we get a couple inches of snow.

Schicke, your cottage sounds even better!!! Bears, eagles, and loons. I am so jealous. I am down here in Texas...no eagles, no loons, no bears. All I get are skunks, opossums and darn armadillos that think digging up my lawn is the thing to do.

But, have been to WV, have met these wonderful ladies, and have seen Belle and Lib in person. Love them all!

I don't know if you have seen the new variety of russet potatoes, which don't sprout "eyes", back there...

They're fine for a while, but about the time they would be sprouting they start to wrinkle, and if you bake them or microwave them, they have a strange fibrous layer under the skin, which is inedible. So, I've been throwing them away (while cussing mightily) for quite awhile.

Don't do that anymore. Wash them a bit, poke some small holes in them, throw them into a pot of water, bring them to a slow boil for at least five minutes ... depends on what you want to use them for afterwards. This process "rehydrates" them beautifully, and you can use them like any other potato...no more inedible layer. [:~D]

I just had a nice telephone visit with Suzanne. Brought her up to date with things of the day...she has been watching all the television coverage and was concerned about anyone being out of power, e.g., the Baltimore area folks and other areas

1) She sends her hellos and love to all, and prayers for Liberty and Belle
2) she got home just ahead of the storm yesterday, got kittyfeed at the store and birdie seed (which was in the trunk of her car, she had to trudge out in knee-deep snow to retrieve it)
3) she picked up her repaired set of wheels yesterday afternoon

Suz is snug and safe in her roost ...and will be home on Monday, will work from home if her office is even open

So, there you have it....

Good Morning/Afternoon, Everyone!

Mighty glad to see Belle, and hear that both eagles weathered the storm! Not so sure about the egg, but it's not for lack of trying on Belle & Lib's part.

Hope everyone is safe and warm. Have been really concerned for Megan with the gh situation. Hope the gh makes it! Megan, how about a hot toddy!

It has been raining like mad here this morning--super bad at times.
Had no satellite TV for about 20 minutes at one point. Glad I have cable internet! Sis-in-law is supposed to join Bro-in-law in Palm Springs at a friend's house--he left early this am to go there. Was supposed to golf today, but bet that's cancelled. They're supposed to stay and watch the Super Bowl. We hope that either the rain stops soon, or that Sis-in-law stays home. The rain was SO bad, Hubby could hardly see to drive to the local Wal-Mart! We don't think the drive is worth the risk.

think Jubby will have to leave Sunday as planned Mits?

This is crazy snow! Somehow we still have power, thank goodness. We can see no less than 5 trees back thru our woods that look like they are laying on or destined to hit the power lines. Snow is lighter now, but still accumulating. My guess is about 27" of snow now.
Finally got a spot cleared for the birds, they were frantic for seed.

Hunter was more interested in computer games when he was here, but he was out playing with friends once he got home. Kathryn got him an inner tube sled. I am sure he will like that.

Love the cardinal pic, Wanda. Got a laugh out of the "been shopping" one. Had not seen that before!

Just got in from almost 3 hours of shoveling...we're NEVER getting outa here! We have the cars dug out all the way around at least, and a path to the cars. Part of the patio. I took some pics...will post later.

We have, roughly, 30" give or take...lots of drifting, too, although the wind is only sporadically gusting, not really steady. Believe it or not, the huge plow is STUCK in the driveway. I hope to God Klye can get the backhoe out. Our drive is about 65 yards from where our cars are to the road. The truck is stuck further up, about 100 yards from the road. The road is completely covered anyway so not like we're going anywhere!

Megan, I feel for you girl. I hope you can hang in there til this stops.

Just watching the local news, and I can't believe the roads.

Prayers..

I would imagine with the amount of snow you're having even snowmobilers would not be able to navigate well. It is said everything happens for a reason, but cannot figure out the purpose of this continuing snowstorm and the havoc it is causing for so many of you. Will worry about you all until the crocuses bloom.

Stupid cam through me off the net! Logging back on.

Got pics and video uploading to FB, will put pics on blog, too.

Neighbor came by and snowblowed my driveway out to the street and the sidewalk...thanks goodness for friends and neighbors!

Shirley, I laughed hysterically when I got hat picture of YOMAMA
BIN SHOPPIN. Didn't tell that it was on my blog. Afraid I will bore some with all my photos and cartoons. I love doing it and my family checks them out.

Headed back out with coffee and hot roast beef sandwiches, man cannot live by cookies alone:)
We saw a friend with a backhoe earlier, came up our lane halfway, hope he will be back eventually. Stay warm everybody!

So Sad - I can't see the egg cup

I hope someone has a video going...

stronghunter said...

Thanks, Ceil. They tell the story. I have some summer pics of that lamppost eating tree. It causes the lamppost to stay on almost all day.

Lady who first lived in that house loved to plant trees, but she had no idea of what she was doing. The trees she planted are taking over now.

Lolly said...

That is one cold egg...in there somewhere!

paula eagleholic said...

Poor baby, wonder what she is thinking

paula eagleholic said...

She is just standing in the egg cup...took a couple bites of snow

It does not look like it is snowing at the nest right now. It is snowing like crazy here.

paula eagleholic said...

It's still snowing, very fine, wind is blowing...

stronghunter said...

Yes, I see her feathers blowing.

stronghunter said...

Big flakes here.

Mema Jo said...

The shake off was spectacular - Hope you caught it

By the length of the tail it looks like Lib to me. Hope Belle soon joins him. (could be wrong on the names)
I just wish they could both be there.

hedgie said...

Wanda, I can't get your blog to open.....will have to try later.
Gal, don't do your roots NOW----what if power goes out in the middle of the job???

Meant to say earlier that cam "THREW" me off, NOT through! Duh...

Going to try to read papers online....sure that will leave a lot to be desired.

All is well here...made it to Summersville before the snow. We have about 10in here. I can't see the nest from my iPod I sure hope all is well. I remeber the last feb snow with the nest. If I remember rit it was the snow melt that caused the problem for the eggs. I am worried for this egg.
