Fresh thread for another rainy day. We spent the day yesterday with the folks from CSPAN. They will air a program in June, which will include some mention of the eagle cam.
Licensed Shmoo merchandise was a huge phenomenon in the late '40s and early '50s, spawning a wide variety of plush and plastic dolls, toys, drinking glasses, wallpaper, belts, books, jewelry, balloons, pendulum clocks, ashtrays, porcelain room deodorizers, canisters, salt & pepper shakers, dairy products, banks, games, masks, puzzles, comic books, baby rattles, 45 and 78 rpm records, ear muffs and more. Shmoos adorned Grape Nuts cereal boxes. There was even a Shmoo fishing lure! These are all highly collectible items today. If you have any of these let's go to the Antique Road Show! lol
Paula, I'm back. What's with you can't click on your name anymore where you signed in to Comment?Name is now in black & Sign Out is blue. Shmoo is my new temp avatar.
Bibee, they brought one to the nest last year that was still alive. I got a video of it crawling in the nest! This is a big one! There is a small pond near the nest, a couple of hundred feet, has a turtle crossing sign next to it!
I bet that was funny watching it crawl around in the nest. I collect turtles. I even have a turtle tattoo on my side. It is a mid-life crisis thing with the tattoo. I even have more than one but they all can be covered and you would never know it if you met me on the street.
Drat...missed the turtle...was on the phone...now Hidey is asleep, with a full tummy, no doubt. I don't see anything else in nest....did Lib dispose of the carapace? Never heard of a Schmoo, but it looks awfully cute!
Bibee, have thought of getting a few tattoos myself...not mid-life crisis, but to cover up stupid little permanent under-skin ink marks radiology made all over my chest before radiation! They used black ink that is turning green...yuck! Thought a few little flower petals or something wouold make me feel a bit better about it...but seems like a silly expense for vanity...not like anybody sees them except me, my Bill and medical professionals.
Tai Shan had a physical and follow-up exam this morning. After being anesthetized in the transfer cage, he was transported to the Zoo hospital. Injecting the pandas with anesthetic always goes very smoothly and this time was no exception, thanks to the practice sessions with the keepers and vets leading up to the “big day.”
During a physical, Zoo animals receive a thorough check-up, which includes blood collection, radiographs, ultrasound, dental exam, and heart and blood-pressure monitoring. In addition, Tai had a follow-up exam with an endoscope to look at both his upper and lower intestinal tract. Gone are any signs of the irritated tissues we saw during his exam last September.
Tai Shan is now consuming large quantities of bamboo culm, or stalk, which is very tough and woody. It is still amazing to see proof that the toughest part of the bamboo plant passes through his digestive tract without incident. Tai’s stomach is honeycombed like the inside of a beehive, while his small intestines were described as being ridged like a crueler donut. All of his tissues from his esophagus to his colon were smooth, glistening, and pearly white to faint pink. Tai’s colon was clean and unremarkable. Well, there was still a bit of bamboo leftovers down there! Now we have to examine minute biopsies collected from along his digestive tract to confirm that everything is perfect at the cellular level. Tai also received his distemper vaccination today.
Mei Xiang has been spending a bit more time in her den. This morning she was up and eating yesterday’s bamboo when we arrived. She was fairly alert and cooperated for ultrasound. After she was done she chose to cradle her pear reward rather than eat it. She carried it under her chin just like a cub.
Since Tai Shan was otherwise occupied, Tian Tian did a great job of being the exhibit panda. With the building closed for Mei Xiang, the boys have to please our guests. Tian was the perfect panda ambassador—asleep, front and center by his grotto.
Hope you feel better in the morning, Mits. Uploading video now, computer was running slooow. Then gonna hit the hay, leaving in the early morn for the walk at NCTC. Have camera and batteries ready!
Good evening! Interesting conversations this evening about Sch-moos, turtles. panda exams and pink poodles.
MITS...so sorry your ribs are fractured. I imagine that does hurt. Did they wrap you to help the discomfort? Let's see....did my fall several months ago start all these falls? Remember my strained wrists?
Jack knows all about Sch-moos. Guess I am too young. LOL I do not remember them.
Having company over tomorrow afternoon. Janet and Russ, the couple who did the speedway with us and their two grown kids plus one wife and one fiance. Laurel and the boys are coming too. Want to see the Adams. Oh and Michael, their son and his wife are bringing their Great Dane puppy who is now full grown. The boys will love that!
Sounds like a full day ahead, Lolly...have lots of fun! BTW...they don't wrap ribs anymore....can lead to pneumonia! Yep, bet you started it all....NOT!
Alright No ferry again tonight for me! Enjoy your day tomorrow Lolly with all your company. Lynn -I think they did give Mits a brace to wear for support at times - not constant wearing.
Good Night All Peace to you & yours Healing prayers for all! (((hugs))) ♥
Good Night to everyone! Enjoy your weekend! LOVE the video of the turtle snack. Also looked at the other videos. These are great! I can't believe I have been here at the house since Dec. 2006 (when I retired due to the illness) and didn't know about this wonderful site and this great group of people! You all are super! Talk to you tomorrow. Sweet Dreams!
Good Saturday Morning....I think, our still Cam is not refreshing, seems to be stuck on 5:54 am, so you will have to bring your LIVE Feed up for the fun. xo
Hidey has not mastered the art of holding his food still with his talon and then trying to eat.
We really have looked for Mema Jo a turtle shell and have yet to find one under that sycamore tree!
Last year, I think it was, Belle brought a turtle to the nest and then flew off. In just a little bit the poor feller went walking across the nest. That would not be a good place to find yourself when you come out of your shell for sure!

All looks good to me Loretta. When you load a new avatar, you have to sign out and then back in for it to show up.
I could still click on your name to see it before you did that, tho.

I was just looking at Pete's Pond, and there was a beautiful, baby Water Monitor stretched out on a shore rock sunning itself.
A lot of Guinea Fowl around the pond today, but not much larger wildlife yet...and no Fatty the Crocodile yet either.
