so we have 2 panda watches ahead of us for the next couple of months...NZ and Memphis, whose panda also went into estrus earlier than expected, she had her AI on Dec.25 and 26th
I have a big ole red-bellied woodpecker out here on my suet feeder. He has been coming around for about a week now. Usually see him out in the yard and not on the feeders. Guess the ground is too frozen! He is one cool-looking dude!
January 18 - Panda Mating Season Begins Early On Jan. 9, the National Zoo’s animal care team noticed increased interaction between our giant pandas, female Mei Xiang and male Tian Tian, including distinctive vocalizations that are associated with mating season. Staff immediately began monitoring Mei Xiang’s hormone levels in her urine, which allows them to predict the exact moment of ovulation.
Throughout the day on Thursday, Jan. 15, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian attempted to mate. Zoo staff carefully observed the panda’s activities and because competent mating did not occur, Zoo scientists and veterinarians performed two nonsurgical artificial insemination procedures beginning on Saturday, Jan. 17. Both pandas were anesthetized, allowing Zoo scientists to collect sperm from Tian Tian and insert it directly into Mei Xiang’s uterus.
Zoo staff separated Mei Xiang and Tian Tian prior to performing the artificial insemination. They will remain separated for the next few months, until Mei Xiang either delivers a cub, or until Zoo scientists determine she is not pregnant. Keeping the pandas separated will reduce the risk of increased stress hormone levels in Mei Xiang, which could jeopardize a developing embryo. Panda gestation typically lasts from 90 to 185 days. Veterinarians will monitor Mei Xiang’s hormone levels and perform ultrasounds to determine whether or not she is pregnant.
Giant pandas have one very brief mating season each year, with only about one day a year in which conception can occur. For the last six years, Mei Xiang has typically ovulated in March or April. This year’s early start is unusual, but due to the expertise of National Zoo staff, they were able to identify signs of this early reproductive activity and mobilized quickly for a possible artificial insemination. There is no conclusive study that indicates the cause of panda ovulation. Although scientists know that giant pandas mostly breed in late winter to early spring, it is not known if the onset of reproductive activity is triggered by increasing day length, temperature or some other environmental factor. This year’s unusually early onset of reproductive activity should allow Zoo scientists to shed knew light on what triggers the reproduction of this endangered species.
Norma, my feeders are busy places this morning too. Went out to fill the feeders and the birds were very impatient, wanting me to get it done and get out of the way!
that is one of the reasons, Sissy, plus they are poor maters, and loss of habitat is a real major one, plus poaching, one of the critical things now is, they have no idea how many wild pandas died in last Mays' earthquake. Alot of the bamboo was buried in mudslides, it is a very serious situation
My brother is doing fine now. Thanks for everyones prayers. He'll probably be on coumadin for the rest of his life. But thats better than having blood clots floating around causing problems.
THURMONT, Md. -- A 300-pound jaguar mauled a woman Sunday morning at the Catoctin Zoo while the woman was cleaning its cage.
The jaguar was supposed to be secure in another area of the cage but somehow made it back into the area where the employee was working. Co-workers heard the woman screaming and were able to use a fire extinguisher to get the jaguar off her.
The woman is in critical condition at a local hospital with injuries to her face, neck, arms and hands.
The Catoctin Zoo is closed for the winter, so no visitors were in danger.
The jaguar will be quarantined for 10 days, during which time the zoo will decide on whether to put the animal down.
Officials are investigating whether it was a humor or equipment error that led to the attack.

It has risen to 59° and will clear 83 by afternoon. They say the winds are still from the desert, but I see the humidity is almost up to our normal???
I guess the wind will shift tomorrow, and then later in the week we are due 2-3 days of showers.
