January 18 - Panda Mating Season Begins Early
On Jan. 9, the National Zoo’s animal care team noticed increased interaction between our giant pandas, female Mei Xiang and male Tian Tian, including distinctive vocalizations that are associated with mating season. Staff immediately began monitoring Mei Xiang’s hormone levels in her urine, which allows them to predict the exact moment of ovulation.

Throughout the day on Thursday, Jan. 15, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian attempted to mate. Zoo staff carefully observed the panda’s activities and because competent mating did not occur, Zoo scientists and veterinarians performed two nonsurgical artificial insemination procedures beginning on Saturday, Jan. 17. Both pandas were anesthetized, allowing Zoo scientists to collect sperm from Tian Tian and insert it directly into Mei Xiang’s uterus.

Zoo staff separated Mei Xiang and Tian Tian prior to performing the artificial insemination. They will remain separated for the next few months, until Mei Xiang either delivers a cub, or until Zoo scientists determine she is not pregnant. Keeping the pandas separated will reduce the risk of increased stress hormone levels in Mei Xiang, which could jeopardize a developing embryo. Panda gestation typically lasts from 90 to 185 days. Veterinarians will monitor Mei Xiang’s hormone levels and perform ultrasounds to determine whether or not she is pregnant.

Giant pandas have one very brief mating season each year, with only about one day a year in which conception can occur. For the last six years, Mei Xiang has typically ovulated in March or April. This year’s early start is unusual, but due to the expertise of National Zoo staff, they were able to identify signs of this early reproductive activity and mobilized quickly for a possible artificial insemination. There is no conclusive study that indicates the cause of panda ovulation. Although scientists know that giant pandas mostly breed in late winter to early spring, it is not known if the onset of reproductive activity is triggered by increasing day length, temperature or some other environmental factor. This year’s unusually early onset of reproductive activity should allow Zoo scientists to shed knew light on what triggers the reproduction of this endangered species.

MORNIN' WANDA & RED!!!--Great to have you WRIGHTS home!!----

RED--Still sending prayers to your brother!!----how is he feeling??

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Norma, my feeders are busy places this morning too. Went out to fill the feeders and the birds were very impatient, wanting me to get it done and get out of the way!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

So Mits, is their short ovulation time the reason for them being almost extinct or endangered?

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Just called out and got Sher and Mattie out of bed this morning. Lazy bones!

normabyrd said...

EAGLE at NORFOLK!-- Love that site---

Mits said...

that is one of the reasons, Sissy, plus they are poor maters, and loss of habitat is a real major one, plus poaching, one of the critical things now is, they have no idea how many wild pandas died in last Mays' earthquake. Alot of the bamboo was buried in mudslides, it is a very serious situation

normabyrd said...

SISSY---Has SHARON had her last visit to UVA?----I asked that yesterday----but we had so many posts---I thought we might go for 1,000!!---ho!

Red said...

My brother is doing fine now. Thanks for everyones prayers. He'll probably be on coumadin for the rest of his life. But thats better than having blood clots floating around causing problems.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Well, they can send them pandas here. I will take good care of em for sure!! (WISH I WAS A PANDA!) Wish I could see Luney!!

Costume Lady said...

Norma, it is good to be home and back with all of you, but, I do miss the Florida temps:(

THURMONT, Md. -- A 300-pound jaguar mauled a woman Sunday morning at the Catoctin Zoo while the woman was cleaning its cage.

The jaguar was supposed to be secure in another area of the cage but somehow made it back into the area where the employee was working. Co-workers heard the woman screaming and were able to use a fire extinguisher to get the jaguar off her.

The woman is in critical condition at a local hospital with injuries to her face, neck, arms and hands.

The Catoctin Zoo is closed for the winter, so no visitors were in danger.

The jaguar will be quarantined for 10 days, during which time the zoo will decide on whether to put the animal down.

Officials are investigating whether it was a humor or equipment error that led to the attack.

THIS IS THE ZOO, SUZANNE USED TO VISIT ON HER WAY HOME SOMETIMES....THINK THEY MEAN HUMAN ERROR, YOU WOULD THINK THEY WOULD CHECK WHAT THEY ARE PRINTING.

Costume Lady said...

I am waiting for news as to where her mom will be laid to rest and the time of viewing & funeral service. If anyone knows, please publish - I don't see it in today's Frederick paper. Thanks.

To mark the 200th anniversary of writer Edgar Allan Poe's birth, a mysterious visitor again placed three red roses and a half-filled bottle of cognac at Poe's grave in Baltimore before quietly slipping away.

The curator of the Poe House and Museum, Jeff Jerome, said about 50 people waited outside the cemetery of Westminster Presbyterian Church, hoping to catch a glimpse Monday of the elusive man known as the "Poe toaster." The man returns each year in the early morning darkness on Poe's birthday.

Jerome says the visitor did not leave any note, not even to comment on the milestone anniversary. He adds the crowd was smaller than he expected and was better behaved than the rowdy groups that have attended the vigil in recent years.

hedgie said...

Yep, Margy is working 6-6 today.
The strange events of early estrus for the pandas is probably related to global warming...LOL!!!! Thermometer says it's 30° but if feels colder, and SNOW is still falling.

Morning, Norma. We are blowing this way and that way weatherwise here.

It has risen to 59° and will clear 83 by afternoon. They say the winds are still from the desert, but I see the humidity is almost up to our normal???

I guess the wind will shift tomorrow, and then later in the week we are due 2-3 days of showers.

I think I'll ship my sinuses to a more stable clime ... if I can find one.
