Update

The have been questions about egg viability/hatching times that Steve W. and I will try to address for you.

Normal incubation period is about 35 days, although a few sources say longer, up to 45. We think that the cold weather during incubation can have an effect on the eggs that could add several days onto the normal incubation period. This could explain why we don't have another hatch yet. We have likely exceeded the time period that we saw a hatch last year.

With that in mind, the days are ticking off, and we think if we do not see a hatch by the end of the weekend, we may be facing egg viability problems.

Bent says this:

"...He gives the period of incubation as 34 to 35 days under normal conditions, though interrupted incubation may require a somewhat longer time. "

Let's wait and see.

Thanks Steven. I've just been searching all over for an e-mail address to ask you that question. What will the adults do to/with the eggs if they don't hatch? How long will they continue to try to incubate? I sure hope we don't have to find out the hard way, but I have been very worried.

Thanks for the new thread and some input on this issue.

Thank you Steven.

I was wondering how long they would continue to try to incubate should the eggs not be viable, myself. As well as what would happen to the eggs.

I guess for now it's think positive time and just sit and wait. :)

Let's just hope and pray that the eggs are viable and if not, well, we'll face that when and if we come to that. I know how hard it is with each passing day...some of us went through this last year with the eagles that nested in British Columbia. What more can I say, besides "keep a stiff upper lip (even though it makes you talk funny)" Love and hugs to all!

Thank you! =)

Thank you Steve for the information. I think most of us has had this possibility cross our minds. We have seen 1st hand this season by watching the FL nest. That couple stayed with their infertile eggs for 54 days.
I will think positive thoughts and be looking for that first egg to hatch. Must keep the Faith and if something negative should happen I will still keep the Faith........

Hi, I did send out a diffenent pic of 2 eggs, this a.m., but the thought has been in the back of my mind, that egg #3 is 37 days today and there were 2 on the 9th of Feb.

MEMA Jo said...

Certainly should be time for a switch. I think there hasn't been any since I had left around 2:15

MEMA Jo said...

Didn't see a thing through all that. Did anyone else?

Sandy said...

Of course we have all thought about the age of the eggs, but I, for one, can't give up quite yet.

Would the cold have hurt them? I'm guessing yes here...

gotta go do homework.

Jennifer said...

I thought I saw a dark spot on one of the eggs.. could be nothing though.

MEMA Jo said...

Glad you're back from the Zoo - I am always afraid they will want to keep you!! The pic from this am is over on Momsters if anyone wants to look.

Carol said...

I just saw whoever is on the eggs stand up and move grass around in the nest. For a split second I saw the 2 eggs. Too brief of a view to see if there were any cracks in either one.

Mits said...

Sometimes I don't want to leave the zoo, Jo, lot of people there today and it was chilly.Tian put on quite a show for Mei, but all he got from her was a swat and a bite...don't think she is ready for the next step yet

I am out of here to take 2 grandsons out to eat... I just know they are going to say Burger King!
I will check in upon my return
Keep your eagle eyes on that egg well

Hey, Mits. Sorry, I laid down and fell asleep. I think my email is going okay for now. Hope it stays that way.

Really glad to know we don't have to give up yet on the eggs. I have been praying really hard on this one. FAITH AND HOPE!!! It is going to be alright.

Lot of egg turning in our nest tonight:).

Aline said...

I watched the Horny Island Bald Eagle's nest in British Columbian last year, both eggs failed to hatch. Sunny asked:"What will the adults do to/with the eggs if they don't hatch?" The answer to this is: the adults consumed the remains. It is nature.

Mits said...

Thanks, Aline.

paula eaglet momster said...

Or they could just discard the broken shells, if that's what it turns out to be. They generally won't just leave them lay in the nest. I hope we don't find out, but we may. The storm may have been to much for the eggs. We will find out either way.

MEMA Jo said...

I am leaving - be back around -Guess I don't really know...whenever the big kids come home.......

Sunny said...

Thanks, Aline. I was afraind that might be the case. We had such wonderful good luck at this nest last year, that I tend to forget that Mother Nature is in charge. I didn't discover the wonderful world of eagles until after the Hornby Island sadness.

Been gone today. Took a sick day. I am praying so hard that our eggs are viable and will hatch. Didn't get achance to watch the cam. Hope everyone is praying too Even though it will hurt us horribly as Mits husband says It is what it is and we will keep loving our parents and stand behind them in faith what ever happens. Together dear ones, we will handle it. I am walking by faith and not b y sight and I see our two eggs hatching. Good Night and I am praying for all my eagle friends. (((Andrew))) especially. Suzanne said...

Good morning, eagle world. I see Steve's update. Not gonna give up, but sure have my doubts. I was hoping egg #3 would hatch yesterday, or even maybe today, because the first one hatched on the 16th. Long time between hatchings, and this is day 38 for egg #3, so I'm hoping!! She had 2 eggs when the cam came up on the 9th, so this is day 41 (at least) for that egg. But that still falls in with what Steve said 35-45 days. I hope it does get warm today, and the little buggers decide those shells are just too small, and want to come out and see the world. Pray we get a chick today! Do NOT want a repeat of FL!!

Someone is sound asleep on the eggs as we speak. The BW chicks are asleep in front of parent, who just woke up as I typed. They are not under him. Oh, he's checking them. I'm saying he, but don't know cause his tail is out of cam view...he's only on part of the nest and the kids have the rest. Man, does that look familiar! I get the area of my bed only as wide as I am, the cats take over the rest. Heaven help us when I have to move....we ALL move.

May try to read blogs, but kinda doubt it. Have to play catch up here at work now that the special "alligators are biting" project is done. At least for now.

All have a great eagle day. Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly!

Suzanne said...

Well, the chicks are snuggling to keep warm... oh no, make that part of them is snuggling, their butts, then they're stretched out the rest of the way. Poor parent is off to the side, head tucked in. They're all sound asleep, this is just too cute. Haven't seen our cam pic update other than the blinds, but parent is sound asleep, nothing to wake her I guess.

Suzanne said...

Geesh, our parent just woke up, got up and stretched, saw 2 white eggs, and back down again. She wasn't up for a seccond! Well, actually she was, I just wasn't looking until the last second. Teach me to pay more attention!

Little BW chicks are moving every refresh, but sound asleep. Now they're right next to each other, but one has his wing stretched out. Now back in. Belle's (I think) got her head back under wing, but her wings are spread out.

Suzanne said...

Our parent checking eggs again. BW chicks and parent still sleeping.

Suzanne said...

Well, BW parent went for breakfast. Chicks are snuggling. Our parent is awake and looking around.

Suzanne said...

Man, those chicks are right smack dap in the middle of that nest. No wonder the parent didn't have any room!

Suzanne said...

Well, either parent is still fishing (how can they see, it's not daylight out yet???), or he/she went up on a branch to try and get some more sleep... too funny how such little eaglets can take up all that room!

Suzanne said...

Chicks still waiting for breakfast, but sleeping while they wait. Belle was just turning eggs in our nest, and an osprey has arrived in the osprey nest. I told Lisa they could stand like statues for a very long time, and she said when they are standing in the middle of the nest like that, they're protecting it. She said the eagles are probably still flying around it, and the ospreys want to keep them away. I imagine it will take the eagles, and ewwiiees, and other birds a little while to figure out the nest is no longer the dinner table.

Both chicks are now awake! Ok, where's breakfast???

Suzanne said...

LOL, so much for awake! Back down they go...

Suzanne said...

Finally! Breakfast has arrived!

Suzanne said...

Ok, first bite. Think that little guy is hungry! The other one is still sleeping. Osprey left.

Suzanne said...

Nope, osprey is back. This is our one-legged female.

Suzanne said...

I didn't see it happen, but the one-legged osprey is gone, and now there are 2 others there.

CamsGrammy said...

Live cam is UP !

Suzanne said...

Well,, only the big chick ate, and now parent is gone. If it was a fish, it was a very small one, there are no leftovers, and he didn't eat that much. 2 ospreys in the nest, our Belle hasn't moved, just her head looking around.

Suzanne said...

We are playing musical nests today. The one legged female is back, the other 2 are gone. Chicks still waiting for more breakfasst, and Belle still on the eggs. Falcons are not on cam.

Suzanne said...

Yup, musical nests. Now the 2 are back.

glo said...

Good morning everyone. Thanks for the heads up camsgrammy I l always try first thing so have it up and running here too. Wishing a great day for the residents at the nest in that sycamore tree.

Suzanne said...

I looked away for a sec, and now both chicks are covered with grass again. Didn't see a parent come back to do that, but they're both under a pile of grass. Too funny!

Suzanne said...

Chicks are breaking out from under! Morning, Glo and Camsgrammy. Egg turning our nest.

Mits said...

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE. Have a good one:).

Finally, paraent back and covering chicks again. She must know something we don't. She covered the chicks like this the last time on the 16th, when we had that horrible weather! Didn't think it was supposed to rain today, thought that was tomorrow... but what do I know??

Suzanne said...

Mits, have fun. Yeah, that should be interesting! How was your tour of duty yesterday? Did you get up close and personal with our Tai??

Suzanne said...

Egg turning. Chicks have a big stick in there with them now.

Suzanne said...

Ok, now we're getting serious with breakfast! Parent brought a big fish, both chicks sitting there waiting!

GOOD MORNING, ALL...

Troubles with AOL this morning so I haven't read e-mail, if there is any.

It looks as though Liberty and Belle have been building a nest divider (playpen, windbreak??).

I guess there's no sign of a chick yet?

Happy day,

Jim

Saw 2 eggs this morning, Jim. She's turning them again, saw one then, but not the other. I hope we get a chick today!!
