Friday PM

Latest message from NCTC, should be posted on their site soon:

April 1, 2011
This morning we confirmed a sighting of two adult eagles in a tree located near the nest tree.  While we do not know the current whereabouts of the original male resident eagle, he was seen on March 21st and was not injured.  We have not seen the male resident since.
The new eagle, we now believe to most likely be a male, has been making trips to the nest on a daily basis.  This indicates to us that the resident male eagle has either moved on or is not willing to come within a certain radius of the nest because of the new bird.
The resident female is still occupying her territory and is keeping quite close to the nest site.
It is very difficult to determine whether an adult eagle as male or female; typically the female is larger (we initially assumed the new adult eagle was a female because of its large size).  Without capturing the new adult to examine it- which would pose a potential risk to eagle - it has been difficult to confirm whether it is male or female.  One method we’re exploring is listening to the eagles’ calls:  some females have a much lower pitch relative to males.
We will continue to provide information as the situations changes.  Meanwhile, we encourage those of you who are interested to learn more about eagle biology.  (For example, this Cornell University Web page is a good resource:  http://bna.birds.cornell.edu/bna/species/506/articles/introduction.)
We have a fascinating piece of eagle biology playing out at NCTC.  We are glad that you are able to experience this along with us.

Fresh thread.

Lynne2 Yes that was cool to see. Even my hubby got to see it.

Lynne2 said...

Shirley....OMG!!!! Glad you could get it out!

OK going to shower now....

Linda said...

Couldn't see too much that time.

Lynne2 said...

It does look kind of brutal when hummers feed the babies, but Mother Nature has that all figured out!

Linda said...

Leona,
Momma Hummingbird feeds that way all the time. It's really amazing to watch. And to think that not too much more than a week ago they just had pin feathers.

Leona said...

For those who missed it. Here's the link to the Decorah Eagles screen captures.

You're right Lynne2............but why are you still here??

Lynne2 said...

I am a blogaholic.

Linda said...

Sounds like me....every time I say I'm leaving something happens or someone says something!

Leona said...

Wow. I glad I got the link today.

Linda said...

LOL, I think I might be turning into one, too!!

I never blogged until a week or so ago. I'm hooked!!

Lynne2 said...

that's right! once I get time to get on here I hate to leave! Besides, it's gonna hurt walking up those steps....LOL!

Linda said...

And.....if you leave, it's too hard to catch up what you missed. So you're better off never leaving!!

Leona said...

I sure was hoping we'd have an April Fools eaglet today.

magpie said...

answered your question
Lynne2
sort of off... have part of a midnight shift Saturday night
but am fragile for getting called in for more
Have Market in Shepherdstown on my list for Sunday !
I am working on getting the day's nest reports on this part of the thread...

great captures of the Dec eagle Leona!

Really, my mother in law is on the phone and I am taking turns with hubby chatting.

Leona said...

PA-Lynn lol

Linda said...

Did they give you a shot of somesort today?

Lynne2 said...

geez Margy, I hope you don't get called in for more hours. On the other hand, you could put that OT into the Send the Dinosaur to Rest fund!

Leona said...

Couldn't get them if it wasn't for their great cam.

Lynne2 said...

who me? Yes, got the shots in the knees....see my post at, uh, shoot, it's before the spilt.

Lynne2 said...

it was the 8:31 post I made before the SPLIT, not the SPILT. LOL!

Lynne2 said...

Hope you get to MARKET Margy!! Say hello to Megan for us!

And thanks for the split warnings!

Lynne2 said...

oh geez, now the BWE (Blackwater Eagle cam) looks all cattywampus too.

Linda said...

Got it, Lynne2. Sorry I missed that post. Too bad the xylocane didn't last longer. I remember when I had my knee surgery my doctor said he shot something in there that will keep the pain away for 24 hours and he wasn't kidding. I had NO pain those first 24 hours, but after that was a whole different story!! Either way, it didn't last but a couple days.

So sorry you're in such pain.

magpie said...

I'm getting ready to post the day's visits in two posts...
starting next....

they will be bold and might be long
then I will send the whole thing to Paula via email and check some of these other things mentioned on the blog !

Good Morning Eagle Lovers - or is it?

Saw Steve's message on the main page - what a heart break; though, LIB will live in our hearts forever.

Great news of the hatch at Decorah from GLO, then the curve ball of the unfolding intruder drama at ME. I don't wish that on anyone!

OK, thanks, I have the pic, but your are right DanaMo, can't tell if it's moving....not a breeze blowing this morning, even that high up!

Found this info under the cam....
Note: The live feed is currently back online, but is still being worked on. High color is resulting in stuttering, so we're having to set it back to lower-color to enable better streaming of the live feed. We're continuing to work on some hardware issues, including the black areas around the video. Thank you for your patience.

I love breakfast at I-Hop. Never tried their whole grain pancakes.
