CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — Frank Buckles, Jefferson County’s most famous living citizen and the last surviving U.S. veteran of World War I, died Sunday, according to a spokeswoman for a Washington, D.C., funeral home where Buckles’ body was being held Sunday night.
I'm wondering why Mr. Buckles body has been taken to Washington, DC? I thought his friends and relatives were mostly in Jefferson County. Anyone here who wishes to pay their last respects, will have to travel to DC:(
Wanda, I'm sure they're planning a special ceremony for Mr. Buckles. He'll probably lie in repose in the Rotunda, or something like that. It's a very big deal. I'd be disappointed if he wasn't recognized with a special observance.
Monday, Monday......rain and thunder over the valley and mountains!
Got an email from Lynne during the night. They are greatly improving...resting better. Steve going back to work today. Lynne had no fever yesterday. She'll be on here later!!
About Mr. Buckles, our last WWI Soldier, from the Post article:
"And despite the ailments of age, he went on championing his favorite cause: a proposal to refurbish the District of Columbia's neglected World War I monument and rededicate it as a national memorial."
"Mr. Buckles wanted a grave site at Arlington and a traditional white marble headstone. And he will get his wish."
Jo sent an email around MN about Mr. Buckles....heard it on the news first thing this AM, got her email and now have paper infront of me. He sure lived a long, full life. Just too bad that he didn't get to see the WW I memorial project completed.
I was waiting on the Capt. to get up before I turned on the coffee maker...he woke up and then, went back to sleep. So, coffee is in the making now and he will just have to drink stale coffee:)
Gene and I went downstairs after church services and our clothes rack is filled to capacity, some wonderful shoes placed neatly on the floor and bags of children's clothing:) WONDERFUL...ask and you shall receive!
Our first delivery of food from the MOUNTAINEER FOOD BANK is being delivered Thursday...450# of meat and vegetables. We don't know what kind of meat it is, just said 'meat' on the order form and chicken chunks, whatever that is. I'm sure we can make a fine meal out of whatever it is:) Now, we will be able to feed and clothe the multitudes, YEA!
Lori, Gene and I work at our church Soup Kitchen and that has been going well. Now we are getting free or low cost food from the Food Bank. We have had some of our dinner guests ask if we had clothing. So we went to our pastor and asked him to announce to the congregation that we need clothing and they have responded beautifully!
Some of the children from the church are coming to help us next Tuesday, by making placemats and setting the tables. Most of them didn't know exactly what a Soup Kitchen is and how it works, so I suggested they come for a little while and see for themselves. I'm excited to help them learn about helping the hungry and homeless.
Church members have been taking clothing downstairs, putting them in the Clothes Closet, others can do the same or call Gene and I and we will pick up (soon as he gets the van running again..today I hope). SK Tuesdays is a good day to bring clothing to us.
James did seem to be excited when you two came to the Soup Kitchen. He loves to GO, doesn't he? Be sure to tell him that we are using his Lemonade now!
Wind blowing at nest....but not here. Looks like we are going to get another dump here....off and on since I got up! Sudden downpours, then sun, and repeat, repeat!
This eaglecam of ours is great! I've never had such a clear pic and as easy a time to get into the site...and the position is fantastic...we get to see the whole nest from above. Of course there will be some heartstopping moments while viewing poop shoots but hey!

The lower left side of our nest looks as if the wind has done a good deal of damage...come on Lib and Belle, we need damage control:)
Megan since they switched - the switch that YOU saw - is it Lib in the nest now?
Good Morning Wanda - Suddenly I'm flung over to a new page! Wasn't paying attention to the page split!

Yes, Lori, that would be Lib in the nest, now. He got there by a switch and a wiggle:)

You are right, Lori, Mr. Buckles deserves High Honors. Hope he just died peacefully in his sleep.
I read in the Wash Post that he died peacefully of natural causes. AMEN.

Thanks, Lori, for the news article.
I thought it would probably be in the planning to bury him at Arlington.

Looking out my window, sun is shining and it's 43°. Might go out for a while, AFTER my coffee.

I'm sure that Mr. Buckles will be buried at Arlington which may be wh y he's at DC funeral home, and news did say natural causes, in his sleep.

Good wild rainy weather folks. I knew it would be hitting the nest soon. Was raining like a blizzard of snow but instead rain.
Need to read some comments.
Hedgie-Lynn hope your sister Gail is doing better.
How's the weather at the nest now? I hope that there won't be any late snow!
