We see the cams are down. We may need to reboot our computer when the Visitor Center opens this morning.

We just updated our Eagle Cam Gallery with photos of both eaglets hatching -- the 1st on Feb. 26 and the 2nd on Feb. 28. Thanks to all those who sent in their photos.

Thanks for the new thread Steve Found this article today. I think most of you here will find it as alarming as I do regarding the status of the Bald Eagles. The Bald Eagle Count

Good to see you here Lynne. How is Miss Daisy? I finally started walking my dogs again last night. Can you believe some idiot still doesn't have his sidewalk cleared? Think I'll call the town government.

paula eagleholic said...

Good morning, everyone.

Thank you, Steve. Have a lovely day.

Wanda, seems you and Gene ave a new purpose in life. Just be sure to enlist helpers so you don't become over-burdened.

Hoping for a painless day for the dentist-bound momsters.

Lynne, nice to see you back. How's miss Daisy doing?

Glo, look for the vacuum under the remaining, highest, most frozen snow drift.

Paula, how's your DIL?

Lolly, enjoy the day with the grandboys.

Lovely sunshine here but windy.

Okay, coffee over so must return to grading.

Bald eagle strikes house

Lynne2 said...

Daisy is just, well, Daisy! She is doing really well with her home schooling in obedience training (sit, stay, heel, sort of! leave it, drop it)...except when she's outside. I've been to obedience classes, and I am no stranger to dogs in general. So after much thought and research, I've decided what she needs is a trainer to come HERE, and help us learn to get her wild self under control, one on one. Or 2 on one. She is so easily distracted and the lunging and pulling on the leash is too much. We have a "no pull harness", but that just keeps her from doing those things when she's on it...only because she can't. It's not helping get her under control. I found a really highly recommended trainer for several sessions at what a standard class would cost and I think this will be money better spent. She is coming on March 20. She talked with me at great length on the phone and I can't wait to get started!

Mema Jo said...

Very nice to come on and it's a new thread. Thanks, Steve.

It's a little blustery out there but temps sure aren't as high as expected.

Thanks for the article Glo and it was so great to see you at the dam in your working gear!

Need to read earlier comments...

oh my gosh, that poor eagle! Really leaves you wondering what happened that it hit the house that way. And what became of it. Personally, I'd have grabbed him in a blanket and taken him for help!

Lynne2 said...

Jo, I was so happy to hear about the family's soon to be return to the states from Germany! Fort Bragg sure is better than...well, anyplace further! Steve was at Ft. Bragg when he was in the 82nd Airborne!

paula eagleholic said...

OH, me too, Lynne.

My Boo was the same way on the leash..he finally grew out of most of it. Still goes at it when first out for a walk, pulls a lot, but then he calms down. What's really hard is when they see a rabbit when I'm talking them for a walk! Hold ON!

Mema Jo said...

Don't take my ten dollar bill - LOVED the Jacob story, Lolly.

WOW to the eagle that hit the house.
I still don't think it is safe for birds (other than owls) to fly in the dark! lol

Good to have you back with us Lynne.
Hope Daisy is behaving for you & Steve
Ft Bragg suits me just fine - remember it could have been Iceland!!

I think Steve and I will be the ones getting the training!!

paula eagleholic said...

Thanks for the update, Lynne.

Lolly - that was a cute story...

paula eagleholic said...

Well, I emailed Emmitsburg town government and told them I thought 2 weeks was plenty of time to clear the sidewalk...we'll see what happens...and I know it's not an elderly couple living there...

Lolly said...

Well, I am very warm now. Walking does that to you.

What an eagle story. I do wish they had searched more for it and tried to get it help. Since it hit so hard, it was surely injured.

Glad you liked the Jacob story. I do think their games and practice will be cancelled tonight. Too much rain. So, I will have more personal time with them. Love picking Jacob up at school. Laurel will bring Joseph home as his school is nest door to her school. He gets out at 3:00, Laurel's school gets out at 3:30. She can leave at 4:00. Joseph sits with a few others in the office and then student council members supervise them until 4:00. A good job for the older students and really helps Laurel. Joseph gets his homework done at that time.

I am off now. Need to get to the grocery store.

Bob, glad Sarah is better & hope all goes well w/your eye! Guess your car and garage wall will be happy!
Lynn, dentist said I wouldn't need any painkillers,HA, DUH (but I got Rx anyway--sure helped my back afetr planting & shoveling snow!)I think Novacaine wore off ,as it hurts from ear to chin now!! But this too will pass.
I may have to talk to Bob. I ordered a telephoto lens & just came. But box says Macro!!!Size in mms is correct! I'm basically a point & shooter----there's no time to do settings when critters are moving arround! Have to study I guess.

magpie said...

decided to change calendar pages instead first
have one beautiful nesting bald eagle (Deb), one red fox, (Wanda and Gene),
one green heron,(Bob's) one red squirrel, (WV DNR)one godchild

hedgie said...

Sorry you're hurting, Loretta. Glad you got the Rx filled---take it! Bob should be able to tell you what you need to know about the new lens for sure!

Glo, article is not terribly encouraging. Definitely echoes many of your observations. Wonder if JR was involved in the count flights in MO?

Paula, hope the house eagle is okay. Missed it===wasn't it Portland, Maine or Oregon?

Bob Quinn said...

Loretta - Many lens are "multifunction". If it is the length you wanted it should be fine. Macro just means it will be able to focus at both a normal distance and when you get really close to things. I use a 100mm macro for my flower photos but it makes a great portrait lens too. I also used it at a family soccer game.

paula eagleholic said...

Bob, you seem way too young for cataract surgery! Glad Sarah's toe is on the mend.

The house eagle was in Oregon, I believe.

Talked to DIL, they thought she passed something this morning, but she hasn't heard back from Dr. But still has pain, so if she did, there's more to come.

Bob Quinn said...

Paula - Young? You flatter me. ☺ I am a young 56. Since I have the cataract in only one eye the Doc thinks I must have had a trauma to the eye at some point.

NatureNut said...

Thx Margy for the reminder on calendars.Got Deb's nest eagle & the green heron on CBF & WWF is around here somewhere.
Heard from Chrissy across the Pond awhile back & her regular dentist tried to pull a wisdom tooth they said had to be removed. He broke it off & it's terribly sensitive. She ran out of painkillers & had to get approved for appt. w/specialists at Dental Hospital. That was going to be 4 or 5 weeks away !So much for socialized med! Hope we don't get that.
That's the end of med stories, after all, this is an eagle/animal Blog! ☺

NatureNut said...

Thx, Bob!! You should teach a class to us amateurs! I'm going to test this on that dreaded eagle nest at Park that is too faraway from the road! If it works, fine, if not, being returned.

NatureNut said...

Dear Margy, Saturday at Park saw that cute older (12ish?) boy who looks just like James. He did go out on boat & friend caught a couple fish.

paula eagleholic said...

Well, Bob, yes I would think 56 is young....I wouldn't consider it as geezing yet :)

Fishing already, Loretta? Didn't think they would be catching anything yet.

paula eagleholic said...

That looks like a piece of trash in our nest, right next to Belle in the middle of her body.

NatureNut said...

Yes, Paula, couldn't wait for roads to be all clear. Yellow perch season is starting.
First call I got was from a man who had been trying to get to fishing spot WAY over on creek near the Potomac!!!He said road was closed from downed trees & was it clear yet!!!???? Like sure, we know about something 15-20 miles away. Awhile back a lady called & said her bus transportation was awful! I tried ti give them some other agencies.
What is going on w/Lily & cubby???More noise than I've ever heard before.

Smithsonian's National Zoo Andean Bear Parents Announce Twin Bear Cub Births
Mon, 3/1/2010 - 11:58 AM

By Karin Korpowski-Gallo

Washington, DC - Two Andean bear cubs, Tremarctos ornatus (also known as the spectacled bear), were born at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. Four year-old Billie Jean is believed to have given birth to the twins over a 24-hour period while denned in a secluded section of her indoor exhibit; one cub was born at about 8 a.m. Jan. 14, and the other was born at roughly the same time Jan. 15.

Animal care staff has monitored the cubs via closed-circuit infrared camera and vocalizations heard through a sound monitor. The staff was able to distinguish verbal squeals and cries from one cub the first morning and determined two distinct, simultaneous cries the next day, indicating the birth of a second cub. Mother and cubs are not expected to be on exhibit for visitors until spring, however, during their denning period, the National Zoo has added a special bear web camera for public viewing. Check in on Billie Jean and her two cubs at http://nationalzoo.si.edu/goto/Andeanbears.

Loretta, Chrissy's apptmt. with the oral surgeon is tomorrow.

BWE back online

glo said...

Lynn I agree the article is not at all encouraging but needs to be addressed and word needs to get out. Its more than just the shad in the Mississippi that is causing such a decline in their numbers. Mentions something in there about TN and FL already taking some steps to address the problem in their areas. I surely hope its a heads up for many. Around here they just kept saying all is OK. Just wait til the counts come out. Then when they did it appears All is NOT OK "

Mema Jo said...

Thanks Mits for the link to the Andean Bear cam Hopefully we'll see some action on there soon!

hedgie said...

They just showed Billie Jean on the news, Mits! What a lovely bear.

Mits said...

she is adorable, such a beautiful face, all I saw on the cam was Billie Jean, but won't be long before I guess you will see the cubs...let's hope Mei Xiang has the same luck.

Mits said...

last time I looked there were 2 fish at BWE, someone ate the head of one...

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

When does the cub watch start, Mits?

Judie said...

Lynne, having a trainer come to Daisy might be the best solution. Sure hoping for the best.

Lolly, forgot this a.m. that the Jacob story is really priceless. I still have trouble with that concept.

Lynn and Lowreeda, glad you are both back from the dentist, that all seems to have gone well, and that discomfort disappears quickly.

Congratulations to Mattie & Co. Ethiopia - interesting.

Bob, we'll all be with you for the cataract removal. Darth had one removed and hardly even knew anything had happened.

Paula, do so hope DIL will get relief soon. So sorry for her discomfort.

Andean bear babies. How cool! Speaking of bears, Lily's cub has been really vocal. I think it is trying to do some exploring and mom is not too happy.

Off to the kitchen. I think a.m. in the p.m. Maybe an omelet with oven crisp taters and something green.

funny you should ask that Sharon, we have a new cam boss, and I will not bore you with what I think of him, so by this time last year, we had already had a meeting about the pregnancy watch, just to be ready, anyhow, the only hormone report we have had is that she did ovulate, and now they will just watch the levels, I suspect the end of April, beginning of May, have not decided if I will do the pregnancy watch.... I really liked the guy I worked with before, but he left several months ago.

No further update on Ajay, John had a lot to do this evening, so we only talked for a couple of minutes. I'll get an update after I get up there. I took her a fruit smoothie at lunchtime :) She is only a couple of miles from work.

Guess that leaves us out... I would have gone for Lincoln!

Right Paula, shhh!

I can't find the Moon, and I have been looking :(
but the clouds would make for a warmer night at the nest

Wanda, I am off on the 12-13th but "fragile" to be called in...will check with the boss and see what I can work out...that would be really great !

Sounds like a fun Sleepover coming up Paula

paula eagleholic said...

Jo I see you get the Fonz newsletter too.

paula eagleholic said...

I like Olympia.

magpie said...

Whee - I bet that was some Root Canal !!

paula eagleholic said...

Sharon, I think mine at work was doing it too....shhhhhh!!!

paula eagleholic said...

So how do my dogs know I am leaving....they are being ever so pesty and clingy. I haven't even tried to sneak a thing into an overnight bag yet!

paula eagleholic said...

Oh, I just realized what it was...I put my sneakers on when I came home...Nugz thinks it's walk night...

Hi to everyone!

I need to vent! Fixing dinner, phone rang, a student called me here at home. Do NOT give personal information to students. Little creep must have googled. Said he didn't know what to do about the exam tomorrow. -- broke his finger. Policy is in the syllabus -- READ IT! Just cannot comprehend the lack of boundaries -- who is raising the kids?

Okay, I'm better. Thanks!

Jo, crispy taters are just sort of crispy and I was extra careful.

How about that Tai Shan -- rolling in Panko!

Like the name Hope for Lily's cub.

Jo, I heard that a TRAIN filled with daffodils stopped at the Sheetz store. Just a rumor, I'm sure.

Need to go relax for a few. BBL

OH, I heard the Good Wife will be back for another season...wish I had started watching that one from the beginning, I love Julianna Margulies.

paula eagleholic said...

Well, that doesn't seem like such a big deal, Judy. Ajay is in the hospital on IV and pain meds, and they dropped her out of her classes. Talk about being pissed. She missed a discussion, so they dropped both her classes...7 weeks into a 9 week class. John has been trying to deal with that this evening, too. He finally had to leave a message.

paula eagleholic said...

John brought her a laptop to the hospital, but she just hasn't been able to concentrate long enough to try to get her assignments completed. They had to re-up her pain meds, she was at 1/2 dose.

Judie said...

I think I would vote for the Cherokee name -- somehow seems fitting to put an eagle with our native Americans.

Not doing a Margy. Really going away for a little while.

magpie said...

That's OUTRAGEOUS Paula...
on top of being ill, having to be aggravated...really sorry to read about this... !!!

magpie said...

Yours is crazy too Judie...unfortunately, NO ONE is raising some of these kids

I would have voted for the Native American name also

Mema Jo said...

Paula - you could still watch Good Wife
There is always a side story completed each time about her case. Wanda or I could clue you in on the ongoing saga!

hedgie said...

OMG, Paula, that's awful. Tell John to call the Dean tomorrow.
Poor Ajay---all good thoughts and prayers going her way.

Judie, that takes a heck of a lot of nerve. Hope you read him the riot act.

hedgie said...

Paula, think I heard that The Good Wife is the top-rated new show of the '09-'10 season. I like her, too.

magpie said...

headache gone Lynn ?

Mema Jo said...

Paula you need to do like Glo did when leaving her dogs - Pack the overnite bag down in the basement area or the laundry room if it has a door.
They are sometimes much smarter than we give them credit.

Off to catch some TV
Will quickly surf the cams

The Good Wife, in a nutshell...Husband was unfaithful with a Ho...wife found out. Husband went to prison for conduct unbecoming a husband. Wife is a lawyer and went back to work after husband's incarcination, she got tired of eating Bon-Bons.
Husband got a new trial and wants to come home while waiting on such.
Will wife forgive him? Stay tuned....

Mema Jo said...

I meant to mention that Woody on Snowman cam has a new scarf...

Mits said...

that really ticks me off to hear about that Paula, and Judie, you should have hung up on him...the little snit

Costume Lady said...

INCARCERATION.

Costume Lady said...

Poor Ajay, she can do without all that stress...don't want the little girl coming too soon!

magpie said...

There are some nice egg check pictures on the Maine Forum for NCTC
Dellwo Hummingbird is first on the Beakspeak list, today and last seven days (seems kind of surprising)
We're still on the Last 7 days list

It's kind of early for this....
but Good Night !

Prayers for all the needs here, and for our families and loved ones...
Happiness prayers offered for all the joys of the day

God Bless Us, Every One
xo ☺ ♥

just being pregnant with your 3rd child is stress enough....

HOPE is in view

Costume Lady said...

What does the syllabus say about that situation, Judie? How do you handle a situation like that?
INCARCINATE HIM!;)

Mema Jo said...

She is in the very center of the pic
Her little snout is pointed towards 12:00
Her little 5 toed paw can be seen

Costume Lady said...

Nite Margy...about time you get a good nights sleep. Don't pull a Ceil:)

paula eagleholic said...

Talked to John, good news is Ajay is supposed to come home tomorrow, they are prescribing some meds that should help with the pain and are safe for baby. Can't believe they haven't done a sonogram or whatever they need to to look at the darn little stone!

Wanda - that's about what I read today about the show...didn't know there was a HO involved! Guess you could call another woman that!

paula eagleholic said...

Is that the cubbie right in the middle of Mom?

Judie said...

You are right, Paula. My situation is no big deal. I am very sorry about your daughter-in-law's health concerns and now her school issues, as well. I think that under the circumstances, it could be arranged to give her incompletes based on her medical condition and the time already committed to her courses. Medical verification should be all that is needed. Again, I am sorry and wish you all the best.

hedgie said...

Margy, no...headache still with me, but bearable.

paula eagleholic said...

I can hear Hope rooting around but I have no clue what parts are what of that bear and cub

paula eagleholic said...

Judie - I meant a broken finger is no big deal...not enough to miss class...

paula eagleholic said...

And I would think an incomplete would be fair...financial aid may not pay for class if she withdrew...

hedgie said...

LOL at your synopsis, Wanda!! Actually, hubby went to prison for wrongdoing in his capacity as a lawyer, which is supposedly trumped up!

Jo, 5 months ago......coming soon! If anyone is interested:
Damages stars Glenn Close, in a typically evil role, this time as a crooked attorney! And Michael Nouri (Flashdance, Young&Restless) is her soon-to-be-ex hubby!
