National Zoo Artificially Inseminates Asian Elephant
Veterinarians and animal-care staff conducted a series of artificial insemination procedures this week on Shanthi, one of the Asian elephants at Smithsonian’s National Zoo. A successful pregnancy is an important milestone in the Zoo’s commitment to Asian elephant conservation.
National Zoo staff worked alongside veterinarians Robert Hermes and Frank Goeritz from the Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin, who conducted the insemination procedures June 3, 4 and early this morning. Scientists will now monitor the level of the hormone progesterone in Shanthi’s blood. If concentrations remain elevated past 10 weeks after insemination, it most likely means she is pregnant, which will be confirmed by an ultrasound. An Asian elephant’s gestation period ranges from 20 to 22 months.
Artificially inseminating an elephant is a challenging and difficult medical procedure, and in order for it to be successful, several things have to take place. First, the elephant must have a healthy reproductive tract. Also, the semen used for the procedure must be of good quality and needs to be placed correctly in the cervix and/or uterus. Finally, the artificial insemination must be timed properly: Elephants have two surges of luteinizing-hormone in about a three-week period. Using blood samples, scientists are able to detect when the first surge, which does not induce ovulation, occurs. The second luteinizing hormone surge, which does induce ovulation, follows about 20 days later, and that is when the artificial insemination is done.
Shanthi, who is approximately 33 years old, gave birth to Kandula in 2001. He was the fifth elephant in the world conceived by artificial insemination. Through past artificial insemination procedures done with Shanthi, National Zoo scientists collected information that led to a greater understanding of elephant reproduction. For example, National Zoo reproductive physiologist Janine Brown discovered that elephants have a double luteinizing-hormone surge, which turned out to be vital for the proper timing of the artificial insemination.
An elephant birth would bolster the decreasing population of Asian elephants in North America and is an significant step toward creating a multigenerational herd at the National Zoo. The Zoo is currently expanding its elephant exhibit to accommodate such a social grouping. Elephant Trails, scheduled to open in 2011, will feature additional space and a walking trail for the elephants, in addition to a large indoor habitat with soft flooring.
National Zoo scientists have studied Asian elephants in the wild for nearly 40 years in an effort to prevent their extinction. Fewer than 30,000 Asian elephants remain in the wild. Another 15,000 domesticated elephants are found in Asian range countries, many of them living in substandard conditions in logging camps, temples, tourist resorts and other facilities.

We returned the fledglings to the nest late this afternoon. Mom flew back and forth several times as they were being released. The youngsters scurried to the the corner of the nest as soon as they were released from their carriers and within minutes were up on the railings flapping and calling. I left a bunch of food in the nest for them (dead mice and quail) so they should have plenty to tie them over until the parents bring in food. The nest is pretty disgusting--full of all kinds of junk including bits of rubber, foam and insulation. There is even a small mirror encased in plastic that they seem to have carried in.
The fledglings by the way are a boy and a girl. They are actually pretty close in size making it hard to tell gender over the camera, but their weight and foot size are diagnostic..so we have one of each.
We watched from the ground for awhile after the release. Mom remained in the area but did not enter the nest. It may take her a little while given the strange events that transpired this afternoon. However, she will eventually just looked and did not see them there, but there are pics on their site
06/08/09: In this Quicktime movie (3.3MB) we can see three chicks moving, so we know all the eggs hatched. Unfortunately we're only seeing two chicks in the feeding shots, which may mean our youngest was not strong enough to make it.
We'll try to get confirmation on the fate of the third, and we'll update the web log at that time.
I do believe I see three chicks "moving" (the whole key to this one) in the video. The third one does not stand up within the time the clip covers though.
I wish they would hurry and make another clip now that they have suggested there's something wrong.
I have a terrible time seeing the little ones at all with my naked eye this year... In fact I can't even make out that black line on their backs right now.
Just came in from the garden...to hot and muggy to enjoy working there. Everyting is doing well with all this rain we've been having. We have lettuce coming out of our ears! I cannot see any chicks at BWO. I'm like Jim, can't see much this year:)
Deb, thought you were leaving for Ca. today. Guess I didn't read enough of the comments to know what I am talking about. At any rate, have a safe trip and our thoughts will be with you this week and ((Hugs)) too.
Hey! Just checking in. I see that NCTC was number 1 again yesterday. YIPPPEEEEE! That's great! See that no one is in the nest right now. Got me a cheat sheet journal. Now, I got to get started putting all the names in it.

Hi Bibee, Hidey has probably learned how to find and cool off in the shade! Always worried me when the eaglets were in the hot sun and panting their little beaks off:(
My Mom and Dad were thinking of buying a Condo in Ft. Pierce, Fla. once, but there was not enough room to park more than one car. So they just never looked anymore:(
yes Wanda, will be heading back on Thurs....Ceil, MM and Jim are coming in on Friday...only reason I'm still here is I am going back to zoo for 1st time in 6 weeks on Wednesday...have a trail shift, cam shift and meeting
Wow, that was cool! I was typing away, heard Hidey announce his arrival, and was able to switch screens fast enough to see Hidey's landing! A couple minutes later, and POOF! there he goes again! Hmmm... from the sound of it, he's landed on the camera. Well, better get back to my school work. BBIALW.
GA girl BWO is the Blackwater osprey site and the flamingoes is on FONZ site. The flamingoes are seating on eggs. I don't think the chicks have hatched yet. Oh hi everyone.
GA girl I always either go to Beakspeak and do it the hard way. Friends of Blackwater. The only think I know about computers is to turn it on and google. If you have any other questions ask someone will help. I will certainly try to help.
Reproduction Pairs of males and females make mud-mound nests, and incubate only one egg for about 30 days. Chicks leave the nest after ten days, and join a group of other chicks, called a crèche, watched by a few adults.
Good afternoon, momsters and dadsters. Right, Wanda....too hot out there to stay out for too long! Waiting for the beginning of another conference call with GM....dial-in 10 mins. early they said...now on musical hold! Deb, wishing you a safe trip. Hope that you will feel us with you and know that we will be thinking of you and your family during this difficult time.
Hello eagle lovers. This is my first communication. Been having health problems recently and the relevance is that Hidey and his/her fans' comments have truly been a bright spot. I am a native of Norfolk so watching the Rebels has also been a joy - except for the fall from the nest which created a heart-skip. Thank you one and all and may each of you enjoy the summer.
Mits do you know when the flamingoes chicks are do to hatch? I looked on the site but did not see any info. I like the term blue thingies know it is spelled wrong.
Hey Costume Lady! I still can't get pete's pond. When I click on it, I get the website but it says there is an error. I dont' know why this new computer would not open it up. Only thing I have in my favoritess are animal cams. That is so neat!!!! I love it. So nice and peaceful to sit back and watch the animals.
know last year we watched them in the really hot weather, seem like so many more are laying on the mud nest this year, even some of the very young ones, which are still more white than pink.
Ahhh...sisterly love... at least you're kidding, my sister probably would push me down the steps..if I ever saw her:( All I can see in the BWO nest is sticks, haven't had time to watch the video. Back to the garden, it's HOT out there.
Hello all...checking in and missed Hidey all day as was busy at work. Welcome JMP; safe trip Deb; and all others keep cool! Just went out to check my garden and like others....waaay to hot and humid to stay long...looks like clouds are gathering from the west so maybe seeing some storms later on this evening. Preparing for another wet week and glad the yard is mowed as we would be making hay if it went another week with rain and these temps! Sorry Calvin didnt make history on Mine That Bird at the Belmont...but at least all the horses came home to the finish line safe and sound with the long ride around that track. Have a good nite to all...!
Conference call over....now we know the benefit cuts that we retirees will be hit with. Pensions are safe, but everything else either gone or drastically modified. Life's a b----, and then you die, as the saying goes.
Hi! Just quickly checking back in before typing up another keyboard drill. Boy, I have got to get more sleep tonight! I am really tired this afternoon-- maybe a gallon of coffe would help.
Sharon, your pups are SO cute! I bet they're really good company, too.
Well, back to homework! Take care, and I'll BBL. :o]
Can their thermometer be right at Snowman? Only in the 40's? Moderator on conference call from Detroit said they were having lousy weather....so guess that's what she meant!
Helen, NZ weighed in with their theory about the geese downing the Hudson River plane....they were looking for grass! Whoops----should have been looking lower!
Lynn sorry to hear about your benefits. Such a shame that companies can do that. My mother in law worked for a meat packing place Goetzes and the owners spent the employees pension. The union went to Washington to fight it but all the money was gone.

We watched from the ground for awhile after the release. Mom remained in the area but did not enter the nest. It may take her a little while given the strange events that transpired this afternoon. However, she will eventually
just looked and did not see them there, but there are pics on their site
both o's at BWO
latest from Lisa at BWO...
06/08/09:
In this Quicktime movie (3.3MB) we can see three chicks moving, so we know all the eggs hatched. Unfortunately we're only seeing two chicks in the feeding shots, which may mean our youngest was not strong enough to make it.
We'll try to get confirmation on the fate of the third, and we'll update the web log at that time.
lots of flamingos laying on nest at NZ
I can see 2 chicks at BWO right now...
Oops, out of view.
Could anyone else really see the 3rd one in that picture video?
I really could not Paula, had a hard enough time seeing the 2 older ones
great wide view and closeup view at OK nest
Where did the fish in the nest run off to?
I couldn't see 3...could see 2 though.
C(°Ù¿°)D
Jim
I am home for lunch, got a late start today. I sure hope the 3rd chick at BWO is okay, but at least we have 2 this year.
I am glad you all liked Roger's picture, sure wish I had gone along with him! He said the eagle let them get really close.

Wanda, I leave in the morning. Time to head back to work. I am not sure when I will be able to check in again. Maybe Thursday.
Thanks again for all your encouraging words and prayers.
in the last video, Lisa provided, very clear shots of 2 being fed, but this was taking yesterday, sometime after 4 o'clock
Hi Bibee, Hidey has probably learned how to find and cool off in the shade! Always worried me when the eaglets were in the hot sun and panting their little beaks off:(
(((hugs, Deb)))
Helen, is it good to be back in Bethesda...or are you thinking of going back to O.C.?
My Mom and Dad were thinking of buying a Condo in Ft. Pierce, Fla. once, but there was not enough room to park more than one car. So they just never looked anymore:(
yes Wanda, will be heading back on Thurs....Ceil, MM and Jim are coming in on Friday...only reason I'm still here is I am going back to zoo for 1st time in 6 weeks on Wednesday...have a trail shift, cam shift and meeting
Hidey just arrived on the back of the nest
looking for nestovers.
sure he will start whining soon
Hidey is checking for nestovers.
That boy is always hungry!
Paula, I sent you mail a little while ago
poof
Doing a hop, skip and jump all over the nest....
I think Hidey went up into the tree!
Ok... huh... what is the BWO site?? and where can I see Flamingos???
good grief, that was a hard landing into the tree...
BBIALW.
Got it Mits.
GA girl BWO is the Blackwater osprey site and the flamingoes is on FONZ site. The flamingoes are seating on eggs. I don't think the chicks have hatched yet.
Oh hi everyone.
Deb -
Will be thinking of you and your family this week. Have a safe trip.
FONZ = Friends of National Zoo!
Thanks guys. I had a brain dump on the osprey nest, thought it was in my favorites
soon time for me to leave. hope all have a great evening
GA girl I always either go to Beakspeak and do it the hard way. Friends of Blackwater. The only think I know about computers is to turn it on and google. If you have any other questions ask someone will help. I will certainly try to help.
FLAMINGO NZ SITE
Just read about Mason. Those people sure have been through a lot.
Deb great picture that Roger took. Thanks.
Reproduction
Pairs of males and females make mud-mound nests, and incubate only one egg for about 30 days. Chicks leave the nest after ten days, and join a group of other chicks, called a crèche, watched by a few adults.
Thanks Mits. You are the queen of blue thingies. What ever they are called.
yes Mason and his family have had a very rough year.
tiny url's is the name I think
sometimes I can do them and sometimes not, depends on what mood my computer is in.
Thank you one and all and may each of you enjoy the summer.
jmp
Mits do you know when the flamingoes chicks are do to hatch?
I looked on the site but did not see any info.
I like the term blue thingies know it is spelled wrong.
hey Ceil open your eyes, just posted it a couple of minutes ago.....
Welcome jmp. Hope your health problems clear.
Hi Lynn.
Mits I meant when were they laid?
ops sorry Ceil, people might think I'm being nasty to you...Ceil is my sister we jerk each others chains sometimes....
oh my bad......think it was mostly in the last week or two
Sisters are good at being nasty to each other! :)
Mits I will push you down the steps again.
ROFLMBO, CEIL......and she will too, but this time I will take her with me, last time I was only a year old
yes, Sharon, you know all about sister;)
Mits they don't get their pink feathers until they are one or two years of age. I thought it was my eyes that some were still white.
Hi Sharon.
don't know much about the birds, but thought the young ones didn't have young til they were pink
Have to look that up. Got to go. Your sister is here. She drove.
good for her:)
Ahhh...sisterly love...
at least you're kidding, my sister probably would push me down the steps..if I ever saw her:(
All I can see in the BWO nest is sticks, haven't had time to watch the video.
Back to the garden, it's HOT out there.
Welcome, jmp. The eagles certainly brighten up my day, too! Hope things get better for you!
Bibee - do you have real player installed on your computer? That's what Pete's pond uses.
I can see there seems to be a feeding at BWO, I think I see two chick heads, but it is really difficult to get much resolution there.
You gardeners need a visit from someone with Water Balloons and Squirt Guns! Let me round up my Grandson.
Good to See everyone...xox
Ah Megan, then Mother nature is doing her job...the chix are supposed to look like stix :):)
Mits
Best wishes on your return to the Zoo tomorrow....know they will be Way Glad to see you! The people, AND the animals ♥ ☺
I want the squirt gun, Margy.
You would think it would be easier to see them on the live feed at the visitor center.
I see 2 up for lunch.
Deb
Best wishes, thoughts and prayers on your trip to California.
We will be here...across the miles.
xo ♥ ☺
Paula....
I would make the trip if I could, with several filled with ice cold water!
Any kind of spray bottle works well too ! ☺
definitely see two chicks at BWO...
Sounds like MM is doing really well postop!
Wonder what kind of Mischief Mary Margy and Ceil will be getting into this afternoon ☺
Hello past, present and future Bloggers...
It's that time of day again for me, most are getting off work, I am headed FOR work...
See you Tuesday sometime
Best Wishes for a Great Evening...
with Comfort, Strength, Wellness, and Fun xo
I can't hear much on our cam today by the way, think Paula mentioned that earlier...cannot even hear the kids at the Day Care Center...
TFN xoxo
Maybe it is "Hidey-Activated" and will pick up more sound when baby starts whining !
See ya later...gotta get home and mow...
Lynn, that's true. Hubby's Grandma used to say, "It's a great life, if you don't weaken." She really knew what she was talking about!
Andrea, smart lady, wasn't she?
Good luck on your test tonight!!
so hard to be strong sometimes though.
still only see two heads at BWO moving
bear on snowman cam
aww its one of the cubbys on the snowman cam
Can their thermometer be right at Snowman? Only in the 40's? Moderator on conference call from Detroit said they were having lousy weather....so guess that's what she meant!
Helen, NZ weighed in with their theory about the geese downing the Hudson River plane....they were looking for grass! Whoops----should have been looking lower!
really, Lynn, had not seen that...guess geese need glasses:(
SPLIT COMING SOON....
Lynn sorry to hear about your benefits. Such a shame that companies can do that. My mother in law worked for a meat packing place Goetzes and the owners spent the employees pension. The union went to Washington to fight it but all the money was gone.
that is just awful, Ceil
splitsville........
