I watched the short clip I took of the eaglet leaving the nest yesterday....little rascal came back and landed in the trees across the field...I couldn't see it on the tiny screen on my camera! I kept checking those trees, but couldn't see any juvies! The leaves camouflage them well!

Hi all!
Lovely pics of fireworks, Wanda! TY for sharing.
Saw a recent piece on tv about shale...the black stuff is oil, and that is what strip mining is all about...retrieving the shale to extract oil! They held a flame to one of the black seams in a piece of shale and it dripped black!

hedgie said...

We are so blessed w/ so many folks who take wonderful pics and share them with us! Thanks, Paula. Hope you are feeling better! Jo's sending you a cartoon from me!
Anyone remember when Anne Marie said she was coming home? Missing Vicki and Chrissy, too! We haven't heard from Dave this weekend, either, have we?
Thelma--noticed your early post to Magpie--she had already gone to work!

The eaglet at LW is either branching up in the tree out of sight or she has fledged. This is the second time I have checked today and no eaglet. There she just came down into the nest, I am thinking she is branching up higher in the tree.

I loved the wild flowers - purple thistles are one of my favorites. Your camera is zooming in really well! Juvie couldn't hide when he/she was in the nest. Especially liked the caption of
Until Nest Time THANKS AGAIN!

movin said...

Wow, I've kinda been hanging around the nestcams on and off today. Waiting for the WE sisters to fledge ... I checked this morning, and they're both over the 12 weeks by a little now.

Well, they not only haven't fledged, but they're both lying in the nest and 'billing'!

I CAN believe the younger one, "Surprise," hasn't fledged yet, since she gets very little food after the big chow hound gets done.

Don't know what's going on with the older one, Miracle. She's already lifted off in a strong headwind and hovered at about 10 feet for extended periods. Maybe her instincts have told her she's already fledged and returned home. Anyway, she's staying put for now.

I just read on the IWS blog and checked for myself. The Two Harbors eaglet has returned to the nest.

Just witnessed a bit of nature melodrama. This morning I found a dead Luna moth in the kennel. Put it out in the yard so the dog wouldn't eat it...thinking that it would become part of the food chain. It just did! My broad-shouldered hawk and six crows were fighting over it. The hawk won; he carried it into the woods and was eating it on the ground. The crows kept bombing him, but he proceeded to consume it. In the midst of all of this, two yearlings were on the salt block, oblivious to everything going on around them! Poor things...they were absolutely covered w/ flies. TOo bad they don't have horse tails to swish them away!

Mema Jo said...

Hedgie - I have been waiting for you to say one day that your broad-shouldered hawk swooped down and got a small bird for lunch!
Maybe the yearlings don't even notice all the flies like we do.

Jim - thanks for all the updates from IWS nests. I try to look in on them during evening hours when there is still light on your side of the country.
Lisa has BWO CAM PAGE UPDATE I had been watching those 2 chicks in NC today.

Mema Jo said...

Was watching ZZ out at SD zoo.

Does anyone like me think that the
Kung Fu Panda is goofy looking. The eyes just don't have the panda look. He really turn me Off!

paula eagleholic said...

Afternoon, all!

Don't normally take naps here, but the one I had felt good!

Jo, there sure is plenty to see when the eagles aren't around! The guard asked me if I had seen the baby fox! Now that would be cool!

paula eagleholic said...

JO - I don't like the looks of the Kung Fu Panda either. Kinda creepy looking if you ask me!

Mema Jo said...

Paula - Jenny has a fox family off her property at the beginning of the woods. She puts out peanuts in the shells for them. They love them. She has some good pics she got of them.

I had to look up a luna moth, I didn't understand why a hawk would want a moth. Now I kind of understand, they are big. We don't have anything like that around here.

movin said...

Mema Jo, I have checked that NC nest several times today, and I have not seen an eyass in the frame all day.

I wouldn't be too happy to see the hawk get a bird or a mammal!
I just wish I could get a pic of him, but the sunroom glass just reflects the lens back onto itself, so pics are junk.
Deb...luna moths are common here, but not often seen. They are nocturnal, like most, and camoflauge well in the trees. Here's one for you: have you ever seen or heard of a helgamite?

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

hey, yeah, I have heard of em.
Daddy and Tom used them for bait for fishing. Wicked looking little creatures.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

It is actually spelled hellgrammite, it is an immature Dobson fly (whatever that is).

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

They would find em under rocks in the New River, as best as I can remember.

Mema Jo said...

I think that Megan used to have a pic of the Luna Moth... It is beautiful as I remember! She may still have it in her blog of older pics.

hedgie said...

Right you are Sissy! Even tho' some sites show it with the other spelling, others also show a wormy-looking thing! Don't know about under rocks...here they cluster on the side of buildings where a lights are on all evening/night...and it seems mostly near flourescents! Anyway, they are ugly!

Costume Lady said...

There are only 79 comments on this thread; it looks like I'm not the only one that is partied out and "Butt Tired" and "Slam Tired Out", as the Bluefield Sisters would say! LOL It has been a fun weekend, but glad it is almost over. Need to get back to reality.

HELGRAMITES: The best live bait for small mouth Bass. Found under rocks on river banks. My dad use to use these as bait when I was a little girl. I wouldn't touch them, but I would put a worm on the hook.

Just think, Helen, you have this to do all over again next weekend!

Costume Lady said...

HELGRAMITE PHOTO ON MY BLOG.....

deb said...

Never heard of a hellgramite either. And after seeing the picture, I hope I never see one. I don't like bugs, except for lady bugs.

Costume Lady said...

Lady Bugs are our friends. The larvae look a little likt the Helgramite. Didn't know that until a few years ago. Thought they were eating my beans, but found out they were eating the bugs that were eating my beans. (I have probably destroyed thousands of them...shame, shame.)

hedgie said...

Wanda, that's not what I'm referring to, unless it's the larval stage!! Look up Dobson Fly and see if you can post it, please!

Costume Lady said...

Lynn, sorry, I forgot to tell you that I posted the Dobson Fly. It is the mature Helgramite.

hedgie said...

Thanks, Wanda. We sure do learn alot from each other, don't we?

deb said...

We have mayflies here, but they aren't very big, just annoying.

Costume Lady said...

Yes, Lynn, I have learned so much on this Blog. Probably more than my 4 years of High School!

deb said...

I think I saw a hawk family tonight. I was so focused on the one on the hay bale, that I didn't know until I looked at the pictures that I had three in one picture. I think the main hawk I have pictures of is a juvenile red-tail. I loaded some pictures on my page.

Costume Lady said...

Mayfly photo has been posted...

Costume Lady said...

WOW, Deb!

deb said...

Yep, that is a mayfly. They come later in the summer around here and mainly around the Missouri River in south-central SD.

Costume Lady said...

Hawk on hay bale would be a unique framed photo.

deb said...

I wondered why it let me get as close as I did, now I think it was because it was young. Usually the minute you slow down, they are gone.

magpie said...

Late Good Evening, Everyone that's still up and about...

Just checked all Wanda's photos, and Paula's slideshow: Fantastic Both! Blue Flower is Chicory followed by Joe-Pye Weed and then I think maybe Wild Garlic?

Luna Moth! Ah, my Brother John used to go for them late at night out in Jones Spring (he had to make collections for science classes in High School) - It IS almost like a bird.

I think everyone played really hard this week-end, even those that had to work. NATURE NUT: How was your work day?

Almost time for bed....

deb said...

You see them a lot on hay bales around here, but usually can't get a picture of them. They don't like people.

Costume Lady said...

Just one of life's special moments, Deb.

Costume Lady said...

Margy, fireworks were awesome. Did you get to see them?

NatureNut said...

Good Evening Everyone, Been chillin' today.
Wanda, you beat me to the punch , but your dobsonfly pic is very clear. I've been trying to post pic of my insect display case which has one, but Blogger ate it twice!I've been into entomology since the fifth grade, but of course over the years, my cases were destroyed by carpet beetles. This is the only one I made up a few years ago. But I don't like to kill anything anymore. Think that happens when you're a Mom?

paula eagleholic said...

Thanks, Magpie. Had no clue what the flowers were...I'll get them labeled.

Helgamite - yuck! I'll take bloodworms anyday.

Awesome photos, Deb.

NatureNut said...

Hi, Margy! I worked Sat. & have to go in tomorrow, too. Swapped days w/guy that went out of town.
Also saw Paula and Wanda's pics--they are great!

DEB: Just checked your posts too:
great stuff

COSTUME LADY: The best fireworks I saw are on your and DEB's photo sites... I did see a few from my "front stoop," including the finale, that was pretty impressive. Sure Glad we had all that rain, or we mighta had a few fires in the county..

Good to "see" everyone that was on today, and learn about all your things, birds, flowers, insects, people. Nice way to bring the day and the week-end to a close.

YOU'RE WELCOME PAULA. LOVED THE RASPBERRIES! I AM NOT POSITIVE ABOUT THE WILD GARLIC..

Prayers for all...I know there are a lot of needs all around us and in all corners of the world.

I had to look up blood worm, too. You have weird creepy crawlies out there.

magpie said...

PS PAULA: NICE TO HEAR YOUR VOICE ON THE HERON VIDEO TOO....NICE TOUCH! BRINGS YOU INTO ALL OUR HOMES !!!

Costume Lady said...

Margy, I believe the flower that resembles the Joe-Pye Weed is a Milk Weed plant. That is where you might find the Monarch caterpillar. Love getting them and watch their stages.

magpie said...

PAULA - HOLD UP ON WILD GARLIC...JUST GOOGLED IT AND I THINK I AM INCORRECT...STILL LOOKING IN MY BOOKS NOW.

Costume Lady said...

Paula, you sure do enjoy mother nature, don't you? I can tell from your photos that you really enjoy being out there with the wild life.

NatureNut said...

Deb, just saw your hawks! One time when we were at a Motel in Gatlinberg, TN, there was a big field next to it. They had baled hay and some hawks were sitting there. I figured they were looking for mice in that field.Easy pickins'!

Magpie - you are really good at ID'ing all this stuff. I hear what it is, then I forget!

I was surprised to see the heron so close to the nest! Thought for a moment it was an eagle!

Bob Quinn said...

Hey all. Just checking in. Haven't taken a single photos since the osprey banding trip. Hope everyone had a great 4th.

NatureNut said...

Hi, Bob! Hope you had a good weekend. I gave Greg K. at Park your link for Osprey Album, and we all love your pics!
