Beijing -- Four giant panda cubs were born within 14 hours at a breeding centre in southwest China, a mini baby boom for the rare animals, Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.

The births began Saturday at the Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Centre when 9-year-old Qiyuan (Magic Luck), gave birth to female twins. Saturday evening, eight-year-old Chenggong (Success) gave birth to a cub, followed by eight-year-old Zhuzhu (Pearl) who delivered yesterday.

YEAH!!!!

Good Morning everyone. Just wanted to say Hi and how nice it is to have all those things we have come to depend on in life :). I finally got my phone back Saturday night and worked yesterday. Today now feels so much more normal.

So got any storms in your life right now? Most of us do form time to time. I hope its not a Derecho. I had never heard of such a thing before last monday Morning. Anyway here is a link to the story and video I made from the storm if you would like to see where I have been. West Virginia actually did have one of these back in the 90's. Saw it on on eof the links I have posted.
Its a Derecho

I have actually decided to walk on through the wind and the rain. I have missed all of you......well almost all....Just kidding where is my wet noodle.

You narrative, GLO, is profound, and your account of the sadness, fellowship, hard work and glory that accompanied this unbelievable event, is something most of us have never experienced. How is Dexter, and could you take him to the Shelter? I am halfway through the video but computer shut down in the middle of it. Your friends kept us posted on your doings, but we are so glad to have you with us "up close and personal" now.
God Bless You and all that you have been through.

Well, they never really left, but Brisbane’s internationally famous peregrine falcons, Frodo and Frieda, are preparing for another breeding season high above Brisbane’s CBD.
These urban wild things have won loyal followers around the world through our Frodocam, which has captured live pictures and video of the predators’ intimate lives.

If you have any questions about Frodocam or about falcons, you can use the field below - if I can’t answer them, Brisbane’s top raptor expert Greg Czechura from the Queensland Museum, will be able to.

Meanwhile, see if you can catch them in live pics on the Frodocam site.

Good morning, everyone. Glo, interesting recount of your storm. Helen, glad you all had a good time with the M&M girls.

MITS said...

DEB, IT WAS A FUN WEEKEND....HOW WAS YOURS????

glo said...

Jim Yes Jim all the food that needed any kind of refrig is gone in my house. In fact I am headed out to shop this morning. Time to restock. Grocery stores in my area did not come back stocked until Fri morning. I was a little leary of the truck refrigeration and knew I could eat fresh and canned stuff for a couple more days til I could restock. Click the link and see the story. They have even set up bins aroudn the area for folks to put the spoiled food so as not to have to keep them on your property til trash day. Too hot and smelly etc etc :(.

TY for your kind words Magpie It is one of those life changing experiences for sure. Dexter is right here beside me and YES he goes to the shelter with me each time. It was pretty hot for him a few days and I wet him down. He then smelled like a wet dog. He has since had a bath though LOL and the kids always love to see him either way. He has managed to also make friends with several adults too though.

glo said...

Speaking of Freida and Frodo...remeber the year we watched her roll the egg back to her nesting area. Last year was not such a good year for them either as I remember. I do hope its a good season for our feathered friends this year. I must admit I have decided to be blogging again and reading some of your accounts. I have not at all decided if I will be watching the cams near as closely though. I can get so very attached to a critter I have never even touched. Not Megan's snakes though ARGH!!! Have no clue how she deals with that as well as she does

Yes, I had a good weekend, Helen. I got to mow!! I am getting ready to head out to the Black Hills to the Sturgis Bike Rally. The motorcycle traffic started picking up last week already. This will actually be my first trip to the Rally.

They have several trees on the far side of their house as well. Got Dex on a leash and across the street I went to check on them first. That was the only damage they had though.

Sturgis Bike Rally Information:

The city of Sturgis does, however, use five statistics to gauge the size of the rally:

* The number of temporary vendor licenses

* Sales-tax revenue receipts

* Tons of garbage hauled

* South Dakota Department of Transportation traffic counts

* Motorcycle counts from Mount Rushmore.

The bottom line, LaRue said, is that somewhere in the neighborhood of half a million bikers attend the rally.

Great panda news from China.
Hey, Dave...looking forward to pics!

you are correct, Norma.....people think they are protected from the haze, but if you put ptotection on, you can get a nice tan....don't know if I will even go out today.....got some things to do around the condo.

A couple of years ago, she could have ridden in in body paint and nothing else. That was quite the year. Families with kids had to do some explaining and eye covering. Things calmed down after lots of arrests for public indecency. At least in town, the bike camps are another story from what I hear.

Norfolk Botanical Garden Eagle Update
8 p.m. July 27, 2008

This report was filed by Dr. Natalie Hall:

The eagle has continued to do well today. He is eating his chopped mice
bits on his own with no assistance. He will not be able to tear his own
food up until his beak deviation is fully corrected, so until then we
will continue to cut his food up for him. He has also been trying out
some different perching spots in his enclosure today and continues to
remain active.

Tomorrow he will be re-evaluated during "outdoor rounds". Once we have determined he is stable and strong again, we can again approach correcting the beak deviation. In the meantime he appears to be very content in his new enclosure.

Potatoes
A Girl Potato and Boy Potato
had eyes for each other,
and finally they got married,
and had a little sweet potato,
which they called 'Yam.'

Of course,
they wanted the best for Yam.
When it was time,
they told her about
the facts of life.

They warned her about
going out
and getting half-baked,
so she wouldn't get
accidentally mashed,
and get a bad name
for herself like
'Hot Potato,'
and end up with a bunch
of Tater Tots

Yam said not to worry,
no Spud would get her
into the sack and make
a rotten potato out of her!

But on the other hand
she wouldn't stay home
and become a
Couch Potato either.

She would get plenty
of exercise so as not
to be skinny like her
Shoestring cousins.

When she went off to Europe,
Mr and Mrs. Potato
told Yam to watch out
for the hard-boiled guys
from Ireland.

And the greasy guys
from France called
the French Fries.
And when she went out west,
to watch out for the Indians
so she wouldn't get scalloped.

Yam said she would stay
on the straight and narrow
and wouldn't associate
with those high class
Yukon Golds, or the ones
from the other side
of the tracks who advertise
their trade on all
the trucks that say,
'Frito Lay.'

Mr. and Mrs Potato sent
Yam to Idaho P.U.
(that's Potato University)
so that when she graduated
she'd really be in the Chips

But in spite of all they did
for her, one-day Yam
came home and announced
she was going to marry
Tom Brokaw.

Tom Brokaw!

Mr. and Mrs. Potato
were very upset.

They told Yam she couldn't
possibly marry Tom Brokaw
because he's just......

Are you ready for this?

Are you sure?

Now that's COOL!!---He is from SD-----Did you know that!!---we talked about that yesterday!!!

ceil said...

Funny potato joke, Helen.

MITS said...

YES, NORMA, did no that:)

glo said...

Yes Hedgie Actually its not just the straight line winds as we get them lots too with severe storms. Its hard to explain the definition is something like this

Thus, to qualify as a "derecho" the series of microbursts and downbursts must be greater than 240 miles

Those microburts and downbursts are what has left this pop corn effect of major trees poped out and split, toppled etc out of no where while the tree next to it is unscathed. It sort of jumps around like a tornado but it is not swirling...more like a bomb blast as a microburst hits a given area. Very weird but does look like a war zone in the beginning for sure.

West Virginia did have a derecho in the 90's at some point. They are very rare. Which is a very good thing. I have seen many a hurricane as I grew up in New England, and the aftermath of many a tornado since moving to the midwest etc..never ever seen or heard anything like this.

OK I need to finish this tea and head on out to the grocery. Hmmm maybe my motivation is where my glue is. I actually hate to drive in IA but promised my daughter to go to a grocery store there today.

YESTERDAY'S UPDATE, WE ARE ANXIOUSLY AWAITING THE URINE RESULTS FROM YESTERDAY
July 27
Mei Xiang showed very little maternal behavior, or any other activit,y from yesterday afternoon until around midnight last night. During the middle of the night, FONZ volunteer behavior watchers saw her cradling and licking her Kong, as well as the grate she had removed from the drain in exhibit three. They saw an eight-minute episode of paw licking at 1:12 a.m., and brief paw licking and possible nipple or body licking later on.

When the keeper arrived this morning, Mei was cradling the grate again. Kong toys and drain grates! It is time for a real cub, pretty please! When the keeper closed Mei out of the den to retrieve the grate, Mei was very interested in returning to the den and waited beside the door. She shifted through exhibit two onto the patio and ate all her produce. Mei also got on the scale, and was weighed at 250 pounds. She produced a much-desired urine sample at 8:30 this morning. She was very alert, but when the produce was finished she took a piece of bamboo to the den to eat, before going to sleep. She is still in the den asleep.

MITS said...

Even though she is baffling the experts, they are telling us not to get discouraged, they did another ultrasoung this a.m., report should be on panda page sometime today....maybe:) Wish I were home so I could do some watch shifts.

hedgie said...

Thanks for further info, Glo.
Why do you hate driving in IA??
Mei sure is keeping us on edge, isn't she? What a rascal! All we can do is hope and pray. Hoping she isn't near that grate after she births...would hate to see a butter stick dropped down the drain!

Pleasant Monday Everyone!!!
Turned off 'puter Sun. eve due to storms & never turned it back on---so been catching up.
Good to see you Glo!!!Hope you will continue to chat---don't have to watch cams. I'm getting bummed out w/Meerkat Manor. I dearly love all those little animals & joined some of their groups, but something bad always tears you up.I know that's nature, but it's still painful.

Even more painful is news I got about lovely, part Apache young (32)lady & mother of 2 girls who was bridesmaid one year ago in lifelong friends' daughters' wedding. She was recovering from leukemia at that time, but in early '08 got a different, more virilent strain. She went to U of MN in May for cord blood cell infusions to change her DNA-didn't work & there were no bone marrow donor matches. She won't be here much longer, but luckily her fiance, daughters & whole family were there Sat. & they had a sort of wedding/family commitment ceremony in her hosp. room. Her name is Sienna & family is praying for a miracle.
Thanks for letting me get this out.

Loretta I too will be praying for Sienna. She sounds like an absolutely astounding kind of person. So much to add to life. I hope that family gets their miracle for sure.

Thanks for the Moose video too. I needed something to make me smile and that did the trick for sure.

Lets see who asked why I hate to Drive in IA well for starters they have no Driver Education in their schools. They never have and they pass those lack of driving skills down to the next generation...need I say more. But I have gotten some groceries and actually gas is always cheaper in IA too so that is good motivation to head that way as well.

Norma you better have a helmet on that head with that pony tail flopping out of it. Lord only knows what else you are wearing.

Ha Ha Deb Maybe it is Scott County. Trust me you can tell when you have crossed the river. Hmmm I am going to do some more checking now. Maybe I have bought into a wives tale being spread by those evil folks from Illinois who think they all drive so great.

Anne-Marie said...

good Morning , I need a break from all of this emotional purging.

Anne-Marie said...

Glo its great to see you on here. Was afraid you got blown away.

Anne-Marie said...

cleaning is good. I am still finding so much that should have been thrown away years ago. I dont throw away like I should and I acumulate(sp). Its emotional but thats good too. Maybe I can throw away a few emotions with the trash. :)

Anne-Marie said...

Hi Wanda, Paula, Deb and Maggie too. Hope your having a beautiful day.

MITS said...

Annemarie....when in doubt, throw it out;)

Anne-Marie said...

I'm trying. I have company coming and I now have the time to really clean , not just put out of sight. I found $13.00 in an envelope. hurray for me. Its just emotional to be going through so much mail and personal stuff. I have my late husbands stuff, my past, and my parents too. I'm get it done it just has to be done in spirts so I can find the physical and emotional energy.

MITS said...

thought Jo was coming back after she read posts, did I miss her?

MITS said...

I hear ya, Annemarie....

deb said...

Don't get me wrong, Glo, I agree totally about Iowa drivers--we say they are Idiots Out Wandering Around!

deb said...

I try not to collect to much stuff and the next thing you know, I feel like where did it all come from. I have been very good lately. I have only a few new eagle things. No more snowmen, no more Americana!!

deb said...

I always do, Anne Marie!

MITS said...

MITS said...

now she is climbing them

MITS said...

now she is doing appropriate licking....

Delta Dawn fell out of the nest this morning, OWL rescue came to check, and she is still in the tree, she either got spooked when parent brought in food, or, she lost her balance. I think you can see her tail feathers to the left of the cam view.

AND AT BARTON COVE:
Confirmed, the nest did blow over around 2 pm on Sunday.

magpie said...

..the nest TREE, that is, at Barton Cove. There is a short post about it on the cam page.

JO: SHOULD BE EASIER TO GET THAT TURTLE SHELL NOW !

Mema Jo said...

Soooooorrrrrry!
Wanda knows that I disappear at times without warning. lol

Linen Closet got me & then the
recliner did me in!

You all were only 49 comments farther along as to when I left.
I think maybe some others had a
panda nap.......

magpie said...

DEB - I think you called that one on the tree/nest at BC....
sure was strange, good pic one moment, then, I thought they were going technical and expanding the camera views...At least we got to see the eaglet a few times on Sunday...

MITS said...

well, BC will have to start from scratch, they needed a new nest anyhow

magpie said...

maybe those aren't tail feathers I am seeing at Delta Cam..nothing is moving ...

Mema Jo said...

Oh my heavens, Magpie! I didn't have a clue that the BC tree was about to tumble! I just knew it wasn't that stable but that the eagle couple continued to use it.
You need a kayak to go over to the little island - can you kayak? Anne Marie was going to take lessons!

I really need a turtle shell

And now I am reading about Delta Dawn! I hope a black bird didn't scare her off & I sure hope she is ok. O.W.L. is something else in their recoveries.

deb said...

Here is video of Delta Dawn falling from nest. It does seem like parent scared her out.
Second eaglet falls

deb said...

She is definitely close to the cam microphone, you can hear her.

Jo, there was a storm that may have blown the tree over yesterday.

Off to car wash, bbl.

magpie said...

THAT is an amazing video clip from Delta Nest, Thanks DEB. That is one curious and concerned parent, and I don't think it flew off too far. Looks like the food is still in the nest...
I heard a peeping that sounded like an eaglet just a few minutes ago, and it sounded close to the microphone.

magpie said...

Panda Nap time for me...back on later.

xo

Mema Jo said...

Power outage again... Knocked me off

Time to head out for Dinner & the mall for some essentials..

UPDATE ON LUN-LUN IN ATLANTA

Monday, July 28
We continue to watch Lun Lun closely for behavioral and physical changes. She is still eating normally and is active. We expect her to slow down anytime now. Eventually, she will become very lethargic, sleep in her den most of the time, and eat very little. But for now, she is still going on exhibit and eating a lot. She cooperated well with an ultrasound procedure today. There were good images of one uterine horn, but the other side was obstructed by gas in her intestines, so the procedure was inconclusive. We will try again on Thursday.

Lolly said...

Hi all! Just posted and do not know what happened to it. It disappeared!

Just watched the video. The parent looks like she can not figure out what happened. Sad!

Okay, and now I have this picture in my mind of Norma and Deb on bikes, wearing wet t-shirts. Wild women! Tattoo's, too?????

We are still scheduled for South Padre this weekend, but it looks like we may be going to Galveston instead. Not too excited about the Galveston beach, South Padre is much better. However, we will be with all three grandsons on the beach. That will be fun!

LATEST UPDATE FROM NATIONAL ZOO
July 28
Mei Xiang spent another night showing some pregnancy behaviors around midnight. At 11:42 p.m. she dragged bamboo into the den and shredded it. This activity lasted 25 minutes and then resumed for a few more minutes at 12:20 a.m. Mei also had a long period of paw licking, lasting 13 minutes, at 12:55 a.m. Otherwise, only a few seconds of paw licking were observed. The drain grate remained in place last night.

After less than a minute of honking at 6:23 a.m., Mei awakened and cradled her Kong toy for a couple of minutes a little later. A few minutes later, she resumed paw licking for two minutes, then continued on to combine cradling and nipple licking for a total of seven minutes.

Mei shifted out to the training cage at 8 a.m. and cooperated for an ultrasound. After she returned to the exhibit. she was observed urinating while lying on her back but she would not shift so we could collect the sample. She continues to eat well, although she still appears sleepy, and chews more slowly than what would be her norm. After the ultrasound, she returned to exhibit three, where she slept until 3 p.m.

When Mei Xiang awoke, she shifted to eat, consuming all of her produce, including the chow placed in the enrichment ball. After eating, she urinated and defecated, then retreated into the den, bringing bamboo with her. Mei became very restless at 4 p.m., attempting to climb the bars and putting her paws on the wall above the bed. She also tunneled into her hay and bamboo nest and head-pressed the wall. After all this activity, Mei folded herself over into a ball and managed to commence nipple/body licking. In the midst of this activity, out popped the Kong toy! Right about now, I am humming Gnarls Barkley’s song “Crazy”!

Hey Magpie, thanks for the info on BC...wasn't anything posted earlier...they now have a couple pics on the page...the tree was supported the last several years by guide wires..

paula eagleholic said...

I think I read Delta Dawn was on a lower branch in the tree.

paula eagleholic said...

Our nest is MT MT MT

MITS said...

poor things have to find a new tree too?

deb said...

The good thing is the tree waited until after the eaglet had fledged to blow over.

paula eagleholic said...

Yup, Deb, that's a good thing. We'll have to check the Maine forum to see if Sharon Feeney paddles out there and gets some pics...

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Good evening everybody. It is great to be back home. Got here about 3:15 but had to go to the store, feed birds (poor fellers were starving), etc. I am worn slam out!! Butt is dragging, but it was great. Jon was so awesome last night at the Basilica and what a beautiful, gorgeous, awesome, breathtaking building that is!

paula eagleholic said...

Gonna go rustle up some dinner...bbl

deb said...

Lolly, if you want a tattoo, you can do it in Sturgis. Tattoo artist from all over come for the Rally. I want the Miami Ink people to be there this year. They have been in other years. It would be fun to see someone from the show.

Mema Jo said...

Good to hear from you, Sharon.
You certainly did have a GREAT weekend!

I have just returned from the mall with my linens!
Video of BC was something else!
That was some storm!

BRB Need to read what is going on.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Well, looking at Mei, I can't tell head from tail! :)

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Mema Jo, I surely did!

I checked Maine forum after Paula suggested it, I found a video of the eaglet in the nest just before and during the fall:

BC storm

There are pictures to, I'll check them out.

deb said...

Here is the link to the pictures Sharon took. She couldn't get too close as the water was shallow. She did see all 3 eagles while she was kayaking.

Thx for all the news alerts!
WOW, saw Delta Dawn fall out of the nest. She was chirping to parent--hope she's OK.Wonder if she saw Teddy Bear? Have to check Hancock Forum.
Also checked Barton's Cove--that video is scary! Even tho juvie had fledged, was back in nest at wrong time!Appears he was OK.

magpie said...

I agree, NN, pretty amazing stuff, both BC and Delta, glad the Sharon lady kayaked out and saw all three eagles at BC. SEEMS THAT BOTH BC AND DELTA CHICKS ARE PROBABLY GOING TO BE OKAY, BUT WHAT AN UNEXPECTED CHANGE-UP IN THEIR ROUTINES!

I just noticed that on the Delta cam page, there is a link down low on the right side for when the FIRST check slid off the nest...never had seen that one yet.

I think Liberty and Belle could give lessons on tree-picking and nest-building for all their Eagle relatives...

paula eagleholic said...

Hedgie - I don't see the skull...wonder if we had a visitor on Sunday when the cam wasn't updating?

magpie said...

PAULA - I had no idea that the BC tree had been held by guide wires!
I agree with everyone, how fortunate that the BC Eaglet (is his name "BB"???) had already fledged.

Just chance too that we got to see him in the nest Sunday before all the wild action happened..

Good Evenings to All..
Hope the Work Day went well for all, at the jobsite or at the homeplace....

magpie said...

DEB - Thanks for posting the quick link sites..

SHARON: Don't go back through the Blogs! We talked about you the WHOLE TIME you were gone, figured you'd never know ! Ha Ha, Teasing, welcome home, sounds like it was all Great Stuff!
