Update:
from an email I got from someone working at the day camp at NCTC this week:
"I'm happy to report that the Audubon Nature Camp students saw one of the eaglets swoop down and catch a fish on the river here today at NCTC! They also saw one of the adults fishing. "

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE...
I just read Steve's comments about seeing one of our Babies catching a fish. HOOORAY!! They were taught well...what else would we expect but perfection from that wonderful family.
THANKS WANDA, didn't see that remark when he put up new thread
HELEN...do you recall the time that Miss Norma mistakenly said something about an animal "hatching" instead of being a live birth? I can't find anyone who remembers. That is why I put the photo of the Pandas sitting in an eggshell. Maybe I dreamed that, I am not at all sure now...I could just be STOOPID! LOL
I definitely remember her saying it, because I teased her about it, just can't remember what it was that she said hatched....did think she was going to get the cane after me;)
Ok, Helen, glad someone remembers the incident...so maybe I am not STOOPID!
LOL Wanda that is really bothering you. When I get a chance I will go back and see if I can find something. I remember it but don't remember what.
BLESS YOU CEIL...If you find it, I will loan you my Eagle Cane for 1 week.
Denali is out in all its beautiful glory this morning:
Denali National Park
Denali
she will be a woman with a mission now, Wanda;)
I remember it, too. I was thinking it was something that had been in the news and the only thing I can think of was a polar bear. That is just a guess, though.
oh WOW....DEB:)
Steve added this to the Friday thread post.-from an email I got from someone working at the day camp at NCTC this week:
I'm happy to report that the Audubon Nature Camp students saw one of the eaglets swoop down and catch a fish on the river here today at NCTC! They also saw one of the adults fishing. "
Maybe Norma remembers. Where is she anyway? Had trouble getting in this morning but it is okay now.
What beautiful pictures, Deb. I think we all should go there on a field trip and climb that mountain!
Thanks Deb, love the shots of Denali, Mt. McKinley and the others. We have been there, but never got to see them very well.
Steve, thanks for letting us know about the juvie that caught a fish!
Haven't heard from Norma today. She said she didn't understand the AFTER FACIL photo...so I guess the incident slipped her mind.
Just want to update you on Genie's/Jewell's husband Rudy. He had reverse shoulder replacement on Monday and should be home today. According to the surgeon, he did very very well. Now he will be in a very restrictive sling as I understand it for 3 to 4 weeks before therapy begins. Please pray for thme both as Genie will have to be his "right" arm for awhile. Praise the Lord that his surgery went well!
She doesn't Blog much (neither do I for that matter) but she reads all the Momster mail and the blog too when she can.
GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE!
Beautiful "partial cloudiness" so far in So Cal, but it is destined to become sunny later and rise into the mid 80's today.

Jim
Isn't that fascinating about the eaglet being able to fish already!?
I used to think they probably learned from their parents after fledging, but as you know some of the experts say they do not learn to hunt and fish for themselves until they are about one year old.
Now, it looks like they do catch some for themselves at an early age!!
That kind of jogged my memory from 2006. Does anyone else recall eaglets bringing their own fish back to the nest occasionally two years ago?? We couldn't figure out if they had caught the fish themselves or just returned to the nest for ease of eating.
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
Wow, Steve that message sure adds some new insight...I have heard they don't learn to fish for a year!!
Wanda - maybe you should email Norma and refresh her memory!
I guess I thought they followed the parents back from the river and parent dropped it in the nest, but, of course, we are talking about Lib and Belle here, and their very smart juvies, all those days at school paid off
Hahaha. I just opened the WE cam, and it looks as though one of the eaglets or adults finally succeeded in readjusting the cam direction.
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
Iris, sorry about the shoulder, but I hope Rudy recovers quickly now, after the surgery.
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
Steve, do you think the Juvie that caught the fish could have been one from two years ago? Or, one from another nesting pair from last year perhaps? It seems very early for one of this year's Juvies to catch it's own fish. I am confused as to normal eaglet behavior in regards to fishing for themselves in particular. Help!!!
Iris - I would tend to think it is this year's juvie. Another juvie would be chased out of the area.
Such good info Megan.. Glad your friend emailed you as to what she and the class saw.
NOW Norma was unaware that I had caught her slip (saying hatch instead of born). Then Mits picked up on it and so did Deb. I think Deb is right about it concerning Norma giving us a news update on the birth of a polar bear! At least it was a mammal and not a bird! I have NO idea how long ago that was - Wanda How far back does your memory go? lol
That info came from Steve- someone emailed it to him and he added it to his new thread post-I just copied and pasted it- brunch is over- bacon, egg and cheese on an english nmuffin..off to get some work done.
Jo, my memory goes waaay back, I just can't remember details or names or places! LOL
I have been checking back on the post and have not seen anything so far. Where is Norma? Is she having problems getting on the blog.
Sorry Megan = I gave you undue credit
I read your first sentence all in one breath! lol Your brunch sounded delicious to me as I just made PB & J sandwich.
Wanda - I love a challenge but I don't think I am going to go back and check out the blogs. Tried to google polar bear cub as far as date of birth for Knut - but that was way back in April and I just don't think it was him-
Ceil If you do research just
look for Norma's comment without an avatar and then the tree (me) and the panda (Mits)! That's the only clue I have for you LOL
think it was sometime in June, wasn't that long ago, maybe May, but not any further back than that
I agree on those 2 months.
You can eliminate late evening chatter - Norma is a morning chatter.
I cannot bet the still cam yet
I may need to reboot but I am then in fear of losing the blog........
So let me know if any of the adults or juvies show up at our nest.
Good day, Momsters/Dadsters!
Catching up....Jim, thanks for giving us the sad news about K71.
Jo...who is Aaron? Son/grandson? Where is your beach house, lucky gal?
Steve, great to read your email from the campers!
Wanda, I remember Norma's egg gaffe, too, but also don't recall what the animal was! I'm pretty sure it's been since our nest visit!
Iris, what is reverse shoulder replacement? Did they have to remove the artificial joint? Was he rejecting it? And then what??
sloth bear close up 1B cam
MITS = tomorrow at 11:30 Sloth Bear demo I expect to see Sharon standing there waving at us! lol
Once she hits the Panda House - she'll stay there all day!
well if she is coming by Metro, sloths is the first stop, then she can work her way done to the pandas
Hedgie - Aaron is grandson and most Momsters know him because he comes to Open House each year with me and his mother - Jenny.
We're down in Fenwick Is in DE
Right over the MD line - Not a beach front but a wooden lot about 8 miles back on DE RT 20 off DE RT 54.
Mits found a cam for me at that intersection so I can watch how all the new building is coming along.
off to get some lunch...bbl
oh my Khali and Bala are on the sloth cam...love those bears
Jo, that is great to have a cam there! Fenwick Is. is nice!
Rudy did not have enough of whatever was necessary to do rotater cuff surgery. And, he was in constant pain as well. This should - in time - alleviate the pain and hopefully give him back good movement.
Reverse Shoulder Replacement -
you can read about it here:
RSReplacement Also here:
Replacement
Hope I did these links right!
New picture of Buddy! Pic is one post from the bottom of the page
NBG forum
I pray that Buddy will start eating on his own. Beak does look great without the brace.
*@#*!! - I need the cane! just got into a battle wih a black snake that was in the old basement where I was working.. got him outside, but lost track of him-he is right along the house...ewww...did I mention I don't particularly like snakes??
lol....somehow can just picture you and the snake in fierce battle Megan
FYI Iris is speaking of Jewell or
Genie - the SandHill Crane Gal.
There is a new pair coming to Genie's
Gertrude hasn't been there - Ralph she assumes is dead along with the twins. Very sad.
But the 2 new ones are dancing up a
storm on Genie's lawn......
Meet Fred & Ginger
It wasn't pretty..
big crowd at sloth bear exhibit, you would NEVER get a Giant Panda to acknowledge that you were there watching it, unless you are a keeper with food
Funny NOT Snakes GRGGGGGGHHHHH!
You need to take your SPADE with you.
I know you really don't want to hurt it but I know you don't want him creeping up behind you.
CALL CAPT GENE
Jo, you can always watch the live feed! I have that and the 30 second cam up.
DID YOU FIND IT YET CEIL ??
I had a long handled shovel, got him trapped against the window screen- which is apparently how he got in, cause he slithered out somehow. So I got that window shut and went outside to find him- he was cranky- tried to get him away from the house with a long shovel, lost him in all the plants hubby has let grow around the foundation( he was asked not to) -called hubby to let him know his error..lol.. I won't kill it unless I have to- they eat mice, just hate it when they end up in the basement.
Paula - I always go thru NCTC site to get to my Live Feed
And I always went thru them to get my eagle cam. I can't access anything except the blog.
I can open my Media Player Classic but I never saved the url as a favorite DUH........
When I pull up my R player and hit play- NCTC live feed automatically loads if it's the last thing I viewed. Did you try openeing your player and just hitting play?
sometimes my RP just comes up by itself
Megan, so where are the mice when you need them
I'll try it.......... If that doesn't work I do think I'll reboot
Is the nest MT?
Nest is empty.
I got my Live Feed Up/Running
It was on my Favorites......
Thanks
ALso, on the topic of annoying wildlife, me and this noisy carolina wren have been arguing for weeks about who has the right of way at the basement door. Couldn't figure out why she was always by the door. I hear and smell(PU) babies in the wall of the entrance at the basement door. There is a small hole in the wall there(again, hubby is maintenance)- she is driving me nuts -and I'm quite sure that snake can smell those babies...
BBL I am still in the PJ Club!!
Not yet Jo. I was cooking pepper steak, changing bed clothes and lending my neighbor old bay so he can steam a bushel of crabs. One got out and boy did it crawl fast.Back to looking. I started with the middle of June and I am working backward. Just looking at Norma's. Dana have the hounds gotten back yet. Send them over to Norma's.
The maintenance & landscape guy
may not want to venture home this
evening........ LOL
I may have to dock his pay...
Thanks Ceil! I just know you're
going to solve this mystery and make
Wanda and all of us other forgetful Momsters happy!!!
Get the CANE, MEGAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO MORE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES FOR THE HANDY-DANDY MAN
MMMMM, YUMMY, dinner for tomorrow night with the M&M girls
I am out of her laughing my head off!
I'm gonna take the weed wacker to his plants along the basement window..
MITS - Do you mean chocolate chip cookies or Pepper Steak for dinner?
But Megan Aren't they the
beautiful 4:00's
peppered steak, Jo...mmmmmm:)
No jo, it is all nicotiana alata- the beautiful fragrant flowering tobacco that opens at night. I love it, these plants all self seeded and are 3' tall and I can't see if a snake is along the foundation-which they often are- he just can't bear to trim them- I shall help him..they have been blooming for months anyway, and are really ratty looking. The good thing about black snakes is they eat mice, moles, and supposedly are territorial and will keep copperheads away from their area.I'm going to try to go back to work, see if I can locate him-hopefully outside..
Okay, ladies and gents, I am out of here! See you when I get there. I will be on Andrew's laptop while there!
Happy Friday!!! Couldn't get on this site at home this AM.But Live cam worked!! DUH
So sad to hear about K71. I wonder what happened?
To all those traveling & on vacation, have a safe and wonderful time!
Back to work....
Mei Xiang is eating biscuits out of her ball
Jo, I didn't give up. Just have some things to do. I am not through May yet. I am through June.
Good afternoon everyone. Isn't that just great that the students got to see the eagles and an eaglet fishing. Sure would like to see in person, huh!?
great to see live feed still up
Iris-definitely have Jewell and her husband in my thoughts and prayers. Floralgirl-I understand, I CANNOT STAND SNAKES!!!
I am 99...next person gets a FACIAL. Look out!
Surprised to hear about juvie catching fish already!!! Our family must have super high IQs!!!!
Not any animals around here on a beautiful weather day...just a couple squirrels. Oh well, maybe something will come by later.
well-got to go do some chores-catch you fine fold later-bye wanda and naturenut
Good afternoon everyone. Y'll all have a nice weekend ye hear. I think I'm needing one of those facials Wanda.
have a good one RED:)
Mei Xiang is sacked out on the platform bed in the birthing den.
OK, Meatloaf in the oven, waiting for an eagle visit
Is your meatloaf as good as Cracker Barrel's. I love theirs.
yes, Red, I think it is, have used an old Heinz 57 sauce recipe got off of their bottle years ago, when I look for it on the Internet, they may say it is the same, but, it isn't, mine is well over 30 years old.....but Cracker Barrels' is awesome too, along with their buttermilk pancakes
Not many visits today. Guess they won't stay here forever.
I'm calling it a day now. Going out to eat.
off to eat dinner...bbl
Jo and Wanda so far May 30th when Norma was being kidded about moving the lawn and something about bls meaning bills that Mits said.
July 25
Last night, Mei Xiang took some bamboo into the den at about midnight and adjusted it to her liking for about one minute. Later on, she had three bouts of paw licking, the longest period lasting two minutes. At 5:59 a.m., she resumed paw licking but only for two very brief bouts.
When the first keeper arrived at 7 a.m., Mei was responsive to her voice and came over to the den window for a piece of fruit. An hour later, Mei came out of the den and went into the training cage for ultrasound. Nothing definitive was observed. The uterine horns (where the uterus and the uterine tubes meet) are still enlarged and there are several of folds of tissue evident, each one raising our hopes for a visible cub. She remained in the training cage for about half an hour and ate her treats at a normal (as in not-pregnant behavior) rate. She declined apples after a while, but was otherwise content with her biscuits, pear, and sugar cane.
After eating and her play session with the gel, she moved back to the mountain rockwork in exhibit three and slept. When she awoke at 3 p.m., she moved to exhibit two to eat more biscuits from her enrichment ball, and bamboo. She looked so much like the Mei Xiang we know from any other time of the year. Only two bouts of paw licking were observed during the day. No urine was collected today, so we'll have to wait to conduct another hormone analysis.
latest on Mei Xiang
Been on the phone all afternoon and evening with retiree stuff! Blah...cauliflower ear!
Iris, thanks for the RS info---very interesting. Either no one is doing it here, or I am just completely out of the loop since retiring!!
Thelma..trivia: bassett hounds have the keenest sense of smell second only to bloodhounds!
Reading about Cracker Barrel, I knew I'd heard or read about it, but I didn't recall seeing one....
Looked it up with google, and it isn't too surprising I haven't seen one. They only have about one per State, at least in the West, and the one for Cal is way up north in Sacramento.
Looks like they have one on Greenland though.
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
Hello and Good Night Everyone.
Hope Mei Xiang has a little Panda (Pandlet?) in there and it pops out soon!
I am "slam wore out." Up too early watching space stations, and work was a beast!
Going to bed! Maybe for a very very long time! Won't even set the alarm clock!
Love to all. Take Care, and Prayers.
xo
REST WELL MAGPIE
OK, Jim where in Sacramen to?
Hi e everyone! got alot done today. Hit the guest room.. Expecting company from out of state next week and want everything clean.
Good night, Magpie.
Have a good sleep.
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
While taking a little rest in the familyroom I looked out to the grape arbor to see a family of squirls in my big bird house. I guess they figured no bird has ever lived in it so they took it over.
bbl
The East coast is peppered with Cracker Barrels. I have been in one down in FL - I think they now have about 40.
I did see one listed in Sioux Falls, SD!
Raccoon party in PA woods
awww little racoons in PA
Yes, Jo, we have a Cracker Barrel. I ate there not too long ago, but can't remember what I had. I like the meatloaf, but don't think that was it.
My favorite chain restaurant is Texas Roadhouse. Yummy, do you have those? I'll have to see if they are anywhere besides middle of the country.
I see they are all over the place, 44 states. They just opened one in Sioux City, so maybe the one in Sioux Falls will be a little easier to get in.
Yes, we have Texas Roadhouse here Deb...went there for DIL birthday in April...
Did steaks on the grill tonight...yummy! Actually, taught the college kid how to do it while I was finishing up the mowing.
We have one in Columbia Maryland which is about 20 minutes from me but have never been in it. Will have to try it. Love Cracker Barrel. Love the store.
Gulliver finally put in an appearance at the Seals Rocks nest today.
And did ya'll see the pic of the deer in the eagle nest? I'll find the pic and post the link for ya!
Deb There is a Tx Roadhouse right up in Hagerstown MD (20 min drive)
I'm sure my daughter and family have talked about eating there.
I LOVE Cracker Barrel's
BUCKEYES !! Yummy !!
Gnite, Magpie, hope you sleep well!
Anne - did you get rid of your skunk?
OK, here's the pic. Great caption, also. Last post on the page.
Deer in Seal Rocks nest
Going to call it a night. Pleasant dreams everyone.
Nite Ceil!
I haven't ever been to a Buckeyes, don't think I have even seen one. I'll check it out.
Great picture of deer in SR nest. Thanks Paula.
wow, that was an amazing site, Paula
Deb, I think Jo was saying that she likes the Buckeyes at Cracker Barrell!
I've been to the Texas Roadhouse in Hagerstown and in the St. Louis area--excellent ribs, and the most delicious home-made rolls w/ cinnamon butter. Yummm. I love Cracker Barrell, too--unfortunately, we DO have one here in Martinsburg--I ALWAYS spend too much in the store! LOL.
Night, night, Margy. No alarm=off work tomorrow!! Hooray!
Thanks Paula - That is too strange!!
Video of Deer in the Nest from
IWS forum
OMGoodness...can't believe the deer! Is that neat or what? Hope he/she doesn't fall......
Deb - I'm know I just assumed everyone would know about a BUCKEYE
Peanut butter ball dipped in
Chocolate and comes out
looking like a Buckeye.
YUMMY!
Megan, sorry the snake scared you. Someday I'll tell you my snake stories. Arghhhh. Living in the woods kind of makes them a fact of life, but I don't like sharing my space with them!! At least the blacks are harmless...it's the coppers and rattlers that are my enemies.
Both cams have sleeping pandas at DC
Mits: Is it Mei on the birthing bed
Nite Ceil!
The power went down twice just a few minutes ago!!
The first one acted like a transformer blowing, and the power came back on in under a minute.
I was just getting the computer back up and writing a comment, when it went down again! This time for 10-12 minutes.
Let's see if I can get this posted before it goes again.
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
Do you guys have "The Black Angus" or "The Claim Jumper" back East there?
I've had some pretty fine dinners in both spots.
Or "The Olive Garden" for Italian food. There's another great one in San Diego County called "Fillipi's" (sp?).
There used to be a "Hungry Hunter" (could still be) that had fabulous food.
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
both cams are on Mei now Jo, she is not in the birthing den, she is on the rocks in her exhibit
GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE!!!
Night, Mits.
Yes, Jim have Olive Garden. Haven't heard of the other 2.
Nite Mits
Jim, Olive Garden is one of my
favorites! Haven't heard of those others.
JIM Did you watch the video of the deer in the eagles' nest?
JO, never knew that a chocolate covered peanut butter ball could be a buckeye!
Actually, I think I posted the clip about the deer in the Seal Rock nest on this blog.
It was probably last night and you missed it.
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
I just googled the Hungry Hunter, and they still have them around California ... and Vegas.
If you get a chance to eat at any of the three places I mentioned, I would recommend them.
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
Well I guess I did! Usually don't miss much but...........
Paula - if you leave a small portion of the peanut butter showing It does
look like a buckeye. It even tastes
better then a roasted buckeye!
We've got Olive Garden, Jim, but never heard of the others! Do you still have Marie Callanders out there?
All this restaurant talk is making me hungry...
good evening all-i can't believe that young deer was in an eagle's nest-wow
Me, too, Megan!
And I bet ya' that Wanda and Gene and maybe Dana and Ed had crab legs tonight!!!
hedgie-i sure do know about the bassett's nose-scares me that Buddy will "escape", follow his nose and not remember how to get home
Buddy loves to run and he usually comes back but can't do it routinely cause I sure wouldn't want to lose him.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A peanut butter and chocolate candy made to resemble the nut of an Ohio Buckeye tree
Hi, Thelma....left you a message in earlier blog...look up to about 8:30!
OK, now I had to look up "buckeye"
It's a tree...from Wikipedia.
The tree species Aesculus glabra is commonly known as Ohio buckeye, American buckeye, or fetid buckeye. It derives its unflattering common name from the disagreeable odor generated from the flowers, crushed leaves, broken twigs, or bruised bark. It is native primarily to the Midwestern and lower Great Plains regions of the United States, extending southeast into the Nashville Basin.[1]
The Ohio buckeye is the state tree of Ohio and an original term of endearment for the pioneers on the Ohio frontier, with specific association with William Henry Harrison. Subsequently, the word was used as the nickname of the Ohio State University sports teams and came to be applied to any graduate of the university.
The buckeye confection, made to resemble the tree's nut, is made by dipping a spoonful of peanut butter fudge in milk chocolate, leaving a circle of the peanut butter exposed. These are a popular treat in Ohio, especially during the Christmas and NCAA college football seasons.
I'm watching the 1943 movie Lassie on TCM-Elizabeth Taylor and Roddy McDowell. I had forgotten how sad it was.
Ok, Jo, no wonder I couldn't find a restaurant by that name. I don't care much for chocolate, so I'll skip that for now. I love the rolls, too.
Jim, I have eaten at Claim Jumpers in CA before and I have seen Black Angus, but haven't eaten there. I like Olive Garden, too, we have them here.
OK, see you already saw it! That Buddy is one great dawg!
I'd never heard of the peanut butter ball buck-eye either paula
GMTA, JO
Eaglet eating at WE
you guys are making me hungry for a grilled steak or a stack a pancakes
It is unusual for a deer to be there, but this nest is on a sandstone ledge on a slope overlooking the Pacific surf.
Not the same as in the top of a conifer or a Sycamore.
They had a pic on the Island site of a large black bear snoozing in an eagles nest, which was coated with a layer of snow... looked like it might hibernate, but it didn't have any snow on it yet.
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
I love Lassie, but don't recall that old movie...I remember the series on TV
Paula...GMTA???? Interpret for this dummy, please!
Got the Lassie movie on now too
do you have turner classic movies (tcm) paula?
reminds me of the shirley temple movies
Had a collie when I was growing up...all the little kids called her Lassie. And the Mom would say to the child "That's not Lassie. It's just a dog that looks like Lassie". So we would say, "C'mon Lassie, let's go!" Ha Ha
I love collies
GMTA = Great Mind Think Alike
you know they had to sell lassie because they had to feed the family and lassie was a show dog
Our dog was named "Checka" short for Francheska.
Is Liz Taylor the little girl?
thanks paula-hedgie-i'm not hip to the abbreviations either
yes liz is the little girl
Hedgie, they indeed do have Marie Calendar's here. I think the only time I was there was at a company lunch...I eat their frozen pot pies pretty often though, and most are delicious.
Deb, The Black Angus is a fabulous place for beef and Margaritas (or whatever spirits you like). The prices are moderate also. You should try it if you get the chance.
I haven't been there in a while, and I'm making myself hungry now.
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
now she was a child star that didn't whine like they do today
No, Hedgie, no crab legs tonight. My Mom decided she wanted to do something different. At her suggestion, we went to Winchester, stopped at Denise's house, had a cocktail and then went to the Olive Garden. Food was wonderful and we had a fun evening.
I have posted some photos of the evening on Wanda's Wishes.
Run Lassie Run, get away from that nasty man!
if lassie doesn't get some peace soon i'll have to change the channel
sharon is safe in DC
bev is safe in TN
Paula, you aren't old enough to remember that movie!!!!
JIM, we kept a lot of Marie Calendars frozen dinners in our freezer in the Motor Home when we took our trip out west. When we didn't feel like eating out, we had one of those dinners and they are very good. We especially like her Beef Tips and Lasagna.
Thanks, Tbird on the movie info.
I loved Marie Callendar's in CA - very good!
Funny Wanda, we were just talking about Olive Garden.
Jim, I like Marie's potpies, too--best commercial ones in the store! A lot of her other frozen stuff is pretty decent, too. My kids didn't believe me when I said that I had eaten in "her" restaurant in CA!
wanda and jim i have no idea what brand you are talking about
sounds like im really missing out though
And the frozen Marie's are very good as well
