Info on RF: Rheumatic fever usually affects children. It is closely related to a preceding streptococcal infection (e.g., streptococcal tonsillitis or pharyngitis). Some of its symptoms are tenderness and inflammation about the joints, fever, jerky movements, nodules under the skin, and skin rash. If inflammation of the heart, or myocarditis, is mild, there is no permanent heart damage, but if the valves of the heart become inflamed, they may become scarred and deformed, permanently impairing their function. Such heart damage can sometimes be corrected by surgery. Treatment of rheumatic fever is with penicillin, salicylates, and steroids; extended rest is usually necessary. Rheumatic fever may be prevented by prompt treatment of all streptococcal infections. Cardiac damage may possibly be avoided if prophylactic measures are taken after a first attack of rheumatic fever, i.e., long-term maintenance doses of antibiotics, to discourage streptococcal infections and recurrences of rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever has declined in incidence in the industrialized countries, but has increased in prevalence in the Third World.
Now the second one is looking all around overhead for her sister, and then she starts in on serious wing exercises and might even fledge herself today.
Good Afternoon eveyone... I think Karla pretty well covered everything that has been going on since Wedensday evening.
Karla called me late Wed. and told me that her Doctor wanted Dustin to go the UVA Hopital immediately. They wanted him there at 6:30...Karla didn't call me until 7:oo. We had so little time to get ready that we didn't have time to think. We just grabbed a change of clothing and took off. We didn't get to Charlottesville until about 11 o'clock. They were waiting on us when we got here and took Dustin in immedietly and started tests right awAy. I don't think there is anything left for them to do. They had 30 doctors checking him out at one time and 23 nurses (much to Dustin joy). Karla slept on a reclining chair with him the first night...and you can imagine how much sleep she got. Dustin's dad (Karla's ex, is going to spend the night with him tonight). Karla's present husband is with us now and will spend the night with us. Thank God for the Eagle Express...much better than an impersonal Motel Room. Hopefullly, Dustin will be discharged tomorrow. They have set up an appointment for him in Winchester Aug. 12 and are sending a team from UVA to meet with others there and determine an absolute diagnosis. A WHOLE MONTH TO WORRY!! MARGY...What can I say about your very special thoughtfulness in trying to track us down? I guess everyon will know now, that if our beans are picked, we are gone!! We have umpteen squirrels...you can have as many as you can catch! Mom is fine and Denise is suppose to take her to get Crab Legs tonight. She is concerned about Dustin and realizes the severity of all this. She is elderly, but still very sharpl Karla just got back from the hospital and said that Dustin may be able to come home tomorrow. with follow ups.....We are all starved...must go.....TTUL Please, Please, keep up your prayers. I love this fellow more than I probably should. LATER
WANDA: Perfect, a hopeful update on Dustin. No such thing as loving a little one too much....we all know that. Or even, loving a BIG ONE too much.
We were doing our armchair diagnostics and thought he might be confined for weeks...(I think I started that thought, thinking it could be a long treatment process..)
Denise, perfect, taking MOM for crab legs....that is what Dustin would want, joyful things to go on as normal.
We are right there with you folks in spirit, and prayer.
"Eaglat" still in our nest, maybe he is pretending to eat "Crab Legs" in honor of the Wanda family...
OUCH, DOUBLE OUCH, JUST GOT CALLED TO REPORT FOR WORK AT 9 PM for 10 hours...Hope a two hour nap can sustain me...I kinda thought it was going to happen...
Night all, gotta nap, will check everything out in the morning when I get home...
I just came in from the kitchen talking to my sister-in-law, Carmen, and we got a gift. Parent and juvie and they are both just hanging out-still. What a gift.
OMG!! At the WE nest, the older one polished off the fish, I was reading a comment, we heard a jet fly overhead; so I looked back at the nest, and both eaglets have fledged, it appears!!
Just dwnlded Neocast & 'puter didn't blow up, despite warnings. Much bigger screen & sound. No birds. Jim, do you think Dr. Sharpe's staff is aware of this? I guess they could both fly, so there probably isn't any danger of injury involved. Guess should check forum.
Many people on that blog are practically hysterical, and many have called the airports in the region AND the Catalina staff.
Someone will drive out there to try and determine the condition of the eaglets.
Personally, I think they are fine and it was a godsend that the plane gave them a boost off the nest. They are both more than a week overdue for fledging. And now it has happened, almost all at once.
That was a wonderful video!Surprise just started flapping like saying, "I wanna go too!" I've seen some of Hulabunnes before. Maybe she got one when they both left due to plane. Sure they're OK. Too bad we can't see more of area--such as any trees or other places they could land.
Dr. Sharpe wrote on the Catalina blog that he is starting out to the WE to check on the condition of the eaglets, but it takes at least a couple of hours to get there.
He also thinks they are alright, since the oldest had fledged already today, and the younger one is certainly old enough to fledge.
Somebody did get some screen captures of the eaglets flying from the nest toward the camera, and from the little you can see, they look fine.
Wanda, so good to hear your news. Will continue to pray for a speedy recovery for Dustin. Missed the eagles visiting this evening! But maybe I will catch something this evening. Going to the lake to check on the boat in the morning, just for the day. I would like to just stay but I reckon gotta stay home sometime.
12:32am West End Nest Report Dr. Sharpe just called to report that both eagle chicks are fine. He is still on the far West End of the island and will post details when he returns to Avalon around 12:00 PST.

got to fly-catch ya fine folks later
We've had this before...works for some and not for others...so those that have it, have to do the reporting! :)
See ya Tbird
Paula I hope your live feed comes up-now Beverly I'm not sure about what I wish for you?! LOL WISH YOU WERE HERE!
I really am gone now eagle buds
See ya later!
I "think" the older WE chick has finally fledged.
But I thought so earlier, and I later found it hiding behind the other one... they can stand almost exactly in line for very long periods of time.
This time I'm fairly sure one has departed the nest.

OK, nobody at IWS saw the exact take off of Miracle's fledgling flight, but somebody caught her beautiful landing on her return.
She just floated in as though coming down from one of her hover-practice sessions.
Miracle's return to nest

PS MEGAN YOUR POSIES ARE GREAT! WILD JEWELWEED IS OUT UP OUR WAY.
XO GOOD NIGHT ! XO
OH BOY!! Adult & 1 juvie, I guess!
I just came in from the kitchen talking to my sister-in-law, Carmen, and we got a gift. Parent and juvie and they are both just hanging out-still. What a gift.
is anyone seeing this
Thx Jim, That was a great video. Most juvies are clumsy.
Good the hear from Wanda. Things are under control. I had no idea RF incuded a rash. Prayers
Take that nap, Margy. You didn't get much heads up time!!
Looks like Liberty and No. 3. I hope he brought some fish, but I can't tell if No. 3 is feeding or not.
C(°ﮡ°)D
Jim
It could be Liberty brought some food, but he's trying to get No. 3 to show some aggression and take it from him.
The adults don't usually stay in the nest with the juveniles at this time in the process.
No. 3 needs to build some confidence and aggression to "take" his food when he leaves the nest on his own.
C(°ﮡ°)D
Jim
Yep, I was busy typing instead of watching, but they have switched ends now, and No. 3 is feeding.
I don't know if he actually "took" it yet. Did anyone else see?
C(°ﮡ°)D
Jim
Fish was delivered at WE too, and as usual the older one hogged it all.
It will be much better for Surprise's feeding when the older one stays away from the nest more often.
C(°ﮡ°)D
Jim
Can't believe it! TWO still in nest on still cam. My Live cam still won't come on.
Wow parent in the nest!
Juvie is back
Jim, Tiny has already had 2 fish this afternoon
My live feed is down....But on the still cam I can see
PARENT &^ CHILD
Hi Paula, Hope you have a great dinner, if you're still going out w/son.
Yes, still both in nest.Maybe they're sharing something!?
Gonna find food too!
Really great to have Wanda come on the blog for a comment. Prayers being said big time!!
Juvie gone now
Poof! POOF! MT NEST
OMG!! At the WE nest, the older one polished off the fish, I was reading a comment, we heard a jet fly overhead; so I looked back at the nest, and both eaglets have fledged, it appears!!
C(°ﮡ°)D
Jim
I am now in Bedford. Saw parent and juvie in the nest for a while. What was up with that?
Oh no, Trouble at the WE nest...apparently a plane buzzed the nest! Both eaglet took off...this is all I know!
Parent gone our nest
Heading out for awhile to the carnival for dinner...BBL
Need to go out ...
Keep your eyes & ears on West End...
Have Non-Neokast on West End. No Eaglets!!!
We are in luck, somebody did get a video of Miracles fledge.
She does just lift off in one of her hovers, and then the wind carries her away.
Watch Surprise's eyes and head and then her wing action.
Now they've both flown the nest owing to a low flying aircraft, and everyone's worried about their safety.
I think they're probably safe though myself.

Been hearing a few squealings out of view at WE nest. Must be somebody sitting somewhere nearby.
Great clip, Jim. TY.
So glad Wanda had time to check in. News sounds encouraging. Eaglet prayers on wings working!

Lake Washington Nest News
Tom Otto: I will be climbing to the nest next Friday to retrieve what's left of the dead eaglet and re-position the camera.
Perhaps we will get closure on this eaglet's death.
Heading in to watch some tv
IF anything on is good enought to watch......

12:32am West End Nest Report
Dr. Sharpe just called to report that both eagle chicks are fine. He is still on the far West End of the island and will post details when he returns to Avalon around 12:00 PST.
Yes, Dr. Sharpe reported by phone the WE fledglings are "fine".
I've just been looking for his posting from home, but so far (12:30 our time) I don't see it.
C(°ﮡ°)D
Jim
OK, here's Dr. Sharpe's report, which I found in "IWS Updates," and which is a really great, descriptive report.
But it's kind of comical how different it is from what we thought we could deduce from what we heard on the cam/mic.
