Thursday

New thread.

Update:

Here is an excerpt from the NU Webcam (now called FirstLight) on egg viability that may be relevant to our nest this year, keeping in mind that they are talking about a Massachusetts nest:

"During incubation, the adults must keep the eggs warm and dry as exposure to rain and snow can chill and kill the developing embryos. Late snowstorms have resulted in the failure of many Massachusetts eagle nesting attempts, most notably the April Fools blizzard of 1997 which dumped up to 20 inches of heavy wet snow across the western half of the state. That year, four pairs of eagles nesting along the Connecticut River, including the pair under Eagle Cam, all failed to produce chicks. The snow that built up on the nests melted and collapsed around the eggs and the adults were unable to keep the egg cup warm and dry."

Hopefully our eggs here have not been impacted in a similar way.

Morning everyone! I'm keeping everything crossed that we get a hatching today. If not, it is what it is. It's been happening before the cam went up and will be long after thanks to the work of all the conservationists out there. Hopefully the webcam will be in place next year so we can watch all over again.

I feel privileged to see something so close that I wouldn't get to see ordinarily. :)

Norma The VA Falcons lost their second egg - the park service staff think it was a raccoon - What you see, I think, is a trap for the
raccoon.

Suzanne I thought the pic Lisa has on the eagle page is adorable -
the one she calls BIG YELLOW FEET!

Pandas: Tian and Mei are in same yard. Tian is munching his bamboo stalks & Mei is roaming. Tai is enjoying his bamboo while of course lying on his back - that kid is going to choke one day.

LunLun has her bamboo - Haven't caught a glimpse of the Little Princess yet. She is probably asleep up on the top of the logs.

I have a tough time getting time to look in on all the hub bub, but have been watching this years eagles on the cam when it has been up. I just got on and noticed only two eggs in the nest, when I saw three before. Can anyone out there tell me what happened to the third egg?

MITS said...

But, you are right, Paula, they look perfectly solid:(.

paula eagleholic said...

Carolinabeachmom -
We think, but are not sure, that an eaglet hatched last Friday, Mar 16th. There was also a snow storm that day, and we think we lost the baby eaglet to the elements. We are not sure, because the cam went down Friday night, and when it came back on Monday afternoon, there were only 2 eggs in the nest, and no sign of the 3rd egg or an eaglet.
