Sunny Wednesday 28 June

Time to dry out here after alot of rain. Here's another entry from Bent on eagle plumage:

"In fresh juvenal plumage the young eagle is uniformly dark colored "bone brown" to "clove brown" above and below; the flight feathers are nearly black, but there is usually a slight sprinkling of grayish white in the tail. This plumage is worn throughout the first year without much change, except by wear and fading, the under parts fading to "hair brown." After the first annual molt, the next summer, the plumage becomes paler and much mixed with white in very variable amounts. Individual feathers on the back, scapulars, and breast are more or less extensively white, those of the breast and belly being largely white in some specimens. I am not sure whether this is a second or third year plumage, or both; if the latter, the third year is whiter than the second. The tail is more extensively mottled with white than in the first year, and the feathers of the crown and occiput are broadly tipped with pale buff.

After the next annual molt the plumage of the body becomes darker, much like that of the adult, but lightly tipped with white below and mottled with white on the rump and upper tail coverts; the latter and the tail are now quite extensively white; the head is mixed with white above, about half white and half brown, or nearly clear, dirty white below. This is probably the third year plumage. At the next annual molt, early in the fourth year, the bird assumes a plumage that is practically adult, with a pure-white head and tail; but usually remaining signs of immaturity are seen, such as a few brown feathers in the head and some dusky mottling near the tip of the tail. The length of time required to assume the fully adult plumage does not seem to have been positively determined, and it may take longer than I have estimated.

Adults and immature birds have one complete annual molt, which is very gradual, and prolonged through spring, summer, and fall. The flight feathers are molted mainly during July, August, and September."

Steve Chase said...

Big tug of war between the two a minute ago, looked like a frog?

I'm thinking the camera issues may be due to wet connections. Let's see if they get better as it dries out.

paula eagleholic said...

Ms Inbetween continuing to devore every last bit of that breakfast

Hey all! Won't be around much today, lots to do... the dove that found it's way to my door is doing okay for now, it's just a matter of "wait-and-see" with healing bones...

Hugo the stork chick is doing so well! This morning he and a parent had "preen-a-palooza" together, and he was doing quite well balancing and stretching. Sometimes I notice he does have a little labored breathing, but doesn't seem weak like before. Plus, sick birds don't preen...

LOL... my miniature doxie, Amelia, is chasing some kind of bug through the grass -- it's soooo cute!!!

Have a good day, don't go cross-eyed looking at the funky cam!

Bird Girl

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

ARRRGGGHHH at the camera!

Reminds me of the lovely green carpet my grandmother used to have in her living room! Depending on where the food is delivered next, it could become a table cloth!

Anonymous said...

Mom and Baby panda are out and having a picnic lunch of Bamboo, if anyone wants to take a peek.

Anonymous said...

Sharon, the green rug to go along with the pyscidelic colors.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I just saw Tai Shan swing around the limb of the tree. That was too cute. This is what I need, soemthing else to watch!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Now, Mits, how cute is that!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Oh Mits, I am in trouble. I have just fell in love with a baby panda!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Baby gone, gone!

Anonymous said...

He is really entertaining and gives his moma fit. I fell in love with him the day he was born July 9th, 2005. He was 2oz. and 5 inches long. I watch them day and night and got to see him live back in January. Something else to watch waiting for the eaglets to come back. And now that you have taught me how to keep the eagle cam up, I can watch both at the same time.. NEAT!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

SHARON THERE ARE 2 CAMS... HE IS INSIDE BY THE DOOR AND SHE JUST STEPPED OVER HIM TO GET IN.. THEY GIVE THEM THE OPTION OF EITHER BEING INSIDE OR OUT WHEN IT GETS HOT LIKE THIS.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I am having a hard time watching the nest, pandas and typing my work. I have figured out how to though! Where there is a will, there is a way!

Anonymous said...

SHARON, WONDER-WOMAN!!!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Oh yeah, 1:20 p.m. MT nest!

Anonymous said...

moma panda inside on cool rocks and baby is on the platform bed in the small den, cooling off, temp is around 90 degrees.

Anonymous said...

With the heat in the nest, do you think these turtles and frogs cook up. YUCK!!!

floralgirl said...

Doesn't the sunshine feel particularly wonderful today?Sounds like I missed a lot of action in the nest this morning.Glad the eaglets are getting food,it's much better hunting weather today.Mema Jo- my flowers are definitely reaching for the sun this morning, and looking better than ever! Mits sounds like a lot of DC is a real mess today with all the water problems. Our road into town is flooded where the Antietam creek came over it's banks. We were so lucky here, I ended up with very little damage to my plants and about 4 1/2" of rain.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Mits, I bet that nest is so stinky!!

Anonymous said...

Sharon, glad we don't have SMELL-A-COMPUTER...

Anonymous said...

Floralgirl, they are estimating between 10 and 12 inches these past few days and now with all the moisture in the ground, it is making very humid conditions and the possibility of thunderstorms later today.

floralgirl said...

Yea-I was just checking the radar, the last thing we need is a thunderstorm today. I feel lucky that we got under 5" of rain here, so many places got so much more.

Anonymous said...

My live-feed keeps freezing up and flashing, green, orange and red lights next to the nctc title, looks like it is on refresh mode.

Anonymous said...

Just enough to make the flowers sparkle, Floralgirl..

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Mits, my live feed is doign the same thing.

floralgirl said...

OK ,guess I'm not gonna see any eagle visitors while I'm watching-lunch break over, back to work

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Mits, It is updating every 10 seconds. Steve, Brad, John, do you all know what is happening?

Mema Jo said...

My live feed seems ok..Leaves are blowing and there is a clear picture. Hope everyones' is doing the same.

Anonymous said...

Marie , they have been experiencing trouble with all the cams the last few days because of the weather. I'm on it right now. Baby up in the pinetree and Moma finishing up a fruitcicle outside. correction baby now down from the tree, trying to steal Mom's fruitcicle.

Anonymous said...

Your right Sharon every 10 seconds!!!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Okay, what do you reckon the problem is? Mine is updating every few seconds. The little arrow to the left of NCTC Eaglecam turns orange when it is getting ready to change.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Okay, Jo, what makes yours different?

Anonymous said...

MINE IS WORKING AGAIN...

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I restarted mine for the 3rd time and it is now too! HMM, what do you reckon?

Mema Jo said...

I reckon you just needed me!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

But then it stopped again.

Anonymous said...

YEP, FREEZING AGAIN...........

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

On further investigation, the button turning orange has something to do with the connection and Net Health. Now it is turning red which means severe decrease in connection. BRB!

Anonymous said...

MINE KEPT TURNING FROM GREEN TO ORANGE TO RED AND NOW SCREEN IS BLACK.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I was restarting mine and it would be live for about 5 seconds and then freeze again. For the umpteenth time, I restarted it and it has been going for 1 minutes 20 seconds on live. Try restarting it Mits.

Anonymous said...

SCREEN BACK ON BUT IT LOOKS LIKE 30 SECOND INTERVALS NOW

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Oh, yeah, I shut RealPlayer all the way down a couple of times too.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Mine has been going steady for about 4 minutes. I do not have a clue why!

Anonymous said...

MINE STILL HAS THE COLORED LIGHTS AND 10-15 SECOND INTERVALS.

Mema Jo said...

Mine has been going for 1 1/2 hrs with all leaves moving. There has been some lines = but not that often. Live Eagle cam seems to be refreshing ok. Now that I have said that-watch it go haywire on me...... Hope the live feed stays up for you! Maybe around 4:30 there will be some action to get on fraps.........

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Mits, did you try shutting down the Real Player and starting it all over again. If the little orange arrow comes up during loading, restart it again and again until it doesn't. Worked for me!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Mine has been going for about 20 minutes with the green indicator of leaves blowing (HA) moving at all times.

Anonymous said...

SHUT MY WHOLE COMPUTER DOWN, NOW BLACK SCREEN AGAIN...... MARIE , that is a perfect description of him puff-ball, I like that...He a very spoiled panda cub, but we love him.

Anonymous said...

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

My arrow is blinking orange again but it is still going!
