Norma, we had a blast, so much fun...Maggie has a little cold and could not go to her 1st day of school, so she was there.....they were more fun then a barrel of monkeys:)
Good morning everyone. Norma Wanda is having a cortisone shot in her knee. She did say knee replacement and at first I though. Huh. Didn't know that. Will be back later. We have no water. They are replacing the pipes in our area and someone made a boo boo.
my poor sister Ceil, has no water this a.m., they have a broken pipe, and everyone in her area has no water.....city is taking its time fixing it, she is threatening to call the TV stations......you go girl:)
You don't fool with Mother Nature. Paula got beautiful young skin but lost her hair. That was funny Norma.M&M girls are great. They keep you on your toes. Maggie said aunt yesterday and looked at me. I was fixing supper. We had a good time.

Bev I'll switch ideas with you...know anything except spray that gets rid of pee ants?
Kidding I'll tell you anyhow. I pointed the box hole west, put the box up about 8 ft or 9 ft (I think that is height Ed told me) and nailed a board to back of box that goes 6 to 8 inches above the roof of house so they can sit there and protect eggs. I also took my feeders down. Cause the other birds kept going to attach the bluebirds.
If you do or anyone know how to get rid of pee ants pleaseeeeeeee?
Dana, use Terro ant killer. It works well. They come in whenever there is too much rain. I get them a couple of times a year. I put it out last Thursday, gone by Friday.
All you need to do is figure out where the little buggers are coming in at, and sprinkle a baby powder firewall. Ants that are already in your house will lose their scent trail, get lost, and eventually die; ants that are trying to come into your house won't be able to crest the mountain of white.
Just as an aside, I've also made this work with lemon-scented cleaner; apparently ants hate that lemony fresh smell.
You can buy Terro in little containers that the ants crawl in take the poison and bring it back to the nest. I still make sure to put it where the dogs can't get at it. They are a big pest here in SD. I would like to get all the nests in the yard, but can't because of the animals.
Thank you all for the help with the ants. I'll talk with hubby to see how he will attack the situation.
Sharon and Bev I hope you get bluebirds. I tried for years and it was always another bird that made a nest in there. Unitl I moved it higher and in a more open space. With the inches above for them to protect nest. Good LUCK( :
What a pleasant day this is! Just right weather wise! AC is off & doors & windows opened! And the best thing is that all my friends are right here! ((hugs))

Osprey dad just took off from the nest Kent Cam 1 Eagle in tree Burrowing owls venturing out farther from the burrow LW eaglet on side of nest & one behind the tree trunk
Only see 1 heron in the nest But if you look far out in the distance there is another nest in the tip top of a tree with a lot of wingercising going on!
Well, I hadn't looked in on Buta Buta for a long time but she is still in the same spot I saw her last time. I looks like she could just melt down in between the 2 logs! What a stressful life she leads! :)
Norma I think you tricked me into the #100 comment LOL I had been watching the numbers because I didn't relish the thought of getting the Poopy Facial!!! Can I give it to you? LOL
GOOD MORNING, EVERY EAGLE LOVER IN THE AREA OF 'THE INFORMATIONAL SUPER HIGHWAY'!
It's an overcast, but clearing, 68° here in So Cal. However, it has been estimated by the U.S. Weather Bureau that it will rise to a warm, sunny 87° by afternoon today.
P.S. I see that oversized Pearl is hogging all the chow again!
Wow, just checking back in, see I missed a lot of Eagle action. Empty nest now, no live feed here either yet. Thanks Mema for the Duck Update...yes, maybe if she does not take her 7 pm break, we can expect some action. Those black chins are wingersizing...maybe soon... Good to read everyone's comments, keeps me connected. Time for some cam surfing then back to this one. Fantastic weather here,in Martinsburg. xo
Barton Cove must be busy, can't get on. Black-Chinned Hummingbirds so twitchy - they're going to break that nest apart if they don't fly soon! Delta Eagle nest still has that old stuffed animal in the nest. Over the Finland: sure doesn't look like water or an Osprey nest to me today. Oh, well on to a few more sites, switching back to NCTC nest every minute or so waiting for another bird to show up.
Saw three chicks at Peregrine Harrisburg ledge, one was an adult I think and it flew off the pole near the nest out into the city..
Mother hummingbird just fed the babies. Looked like she was catching insects with her "tongue." I know there is another word for that but I have to look up the spelling first.
Magpie, I think the name of the Hummingbird thingy you're talking about is "beak" or "bill" same as other birds. C(°ï®¡°)D
Hummingbirds catch gnat-size insects constantly for the protein and other nutrients they can't get from nectar. And they step up the hunting activities when feeding their growing chicks.
I often find "extra" gnats in my feeder during the nesting season. Apparently, they had stuck to the beak and been washed away when the beak was dipped into the feeder's nectar.
Jo, did you get an email from me a couple of days ago??? Sent on on the 14th and one on the 15th...thought maybe you didn't get them since Mits was having some problems getting mail to you.
Dana, there is a product that is safe to use called: darn, I can't find the little bottle right now. It is about a 2 ounce bottle that I get at the grocery store. Usually on the top shelf where the bug sprays are. Basically it is like borax. You can use powdered borax too... they drag that back to the nest and it kills them, but it is harmless to pets, children, etc. (it basically dehydrates the ants) They also hate lemon and lime oils. If they are on the counter you can make them go someplace else by rubbing lemon/lime peel all over the counter... they hate it!
MOVIN - beak or bill sounds good to me, looks rather like a sword, doesn't it? I think you were the one that passed along that second H-bird link to us on the Delwo page...and I figure you are probably watching them too...I don't want to miss them fly out, but I have to take a little break for a bit. Today just really seems like the day, they have been so jumpy and moving those wings at 80-mph.
We generally only get one kind of hummingbird on the "East Coast" and that is a ruby-throated. Sometimes someone will report a Rufous. A friend of mine in New York on Lake Erie has seen them.
Yes, both little Hummers are perched on the side of the nest now, gaping at the ceiling, I guess. They're so active today, I agree they could fledge either this P.M. or in the A.M.
Been watching Wood Duck on CamClickers all afternoon, seen parent and eggs...now..empty box and a bunch of feathers...what's going on? I've just been away from it for about ten minutes....it wouldn't happen that fast would it?
NATURE NUT: Where are the Eggs? Does she cover them up when she leaves? During the afternoon while watching I could see good views of eggs underneath and when she would turn....or is my computer and my eyes playing tricks on me? I guess I should have left for that nap I was talking about awhile back...
Magpie, Are you sure the Wood Duck eggs hadn't hatched? At least most of them?
Once they're all hatched that are going to hatch, they all jump off to rendezvous with their Mom in a pretty short time.
However, if I remember last year well, this nest, which is in somebody's yard and a ways from water, was threatened by a number of predatory birds waiting for them to jump. So the humans just opened the side of the box, removed the chicks and let them go in a safer place where Mom could find them.
Could be, MOVIN - but I was switching back and forth from NCTC nest, CamClickers and Black-Chins most of the afternoon...every few minutes. The most I wasn't watching CamClickers was ten minutes. I guess they could have all hatched underneath her and skee-daddled like you said, or got some help. I guess the daily highlights will fill us in...Sigh...and watching those black-chins is almost as suspenseful as waiting for Tiny to Fledge !
MOVIN - I guess something I read on the Camclickers site was that the Wood Duck chicks would high-tail it outta there within 24 hours...so I wasn't expecting this.
Hi Jim and Margy... I was reading your comments about the Wood Ducks. Last clutch of them hatched one day and jumped out the next day. I checked in on that site yesterday and the eggs hadn't hatched yet. I would think it unlikely that they would hatch and leave the nest all in the same day. Hope nothing has happened to them. Nature is unpredictable sometimes.
Well, Magpie, I wasn't watching today, but I did last year.
What they mean by the "24 hrs." is that the chicks, which have hatched, will all jump at roughly the same time within 24 hrs. of when the first one hatched.
They need to get outside the nest to start feeding, and until then they are feeding on the remnants of their yolk sack.
I had a video clip of them jumping from another nest into the water last year, but my computer crashed since then and it was lost... Found it with google though. Maybe you can search for a video of Wood Ducks fledging.
Well Costume Lady ! And how is that New Knee? We have been all abuzz about you....not knowing for sure if you were going in for surgery or a shot! And how did it all go?
Thanks for the info on Wood Ducks - I just can't figure out what happened in such a short time frame.
Good evening all! Sounds like you have been having a fun day. Hope that Wanda is feeling okay...cortisone injection sites usually get really painful a few hours after and for about a day and then the magic happens!! Magpie, just caught up on last evenings blogs...the shop is in Eagle Plaza in H'ville. Called Irene's Used Furniture Plus. Today was slow. Guess the cooler weather kept people either in or enjoying outdoors. Aren't you glad you didn't have to work today?! That mock drill stuff really sounded like it was keeping Central hopping!
I just looked at yesterday's pic of the Wood Ducks, which was taken at about 4:30 P.M., and you can clearly see that at least two chicks are hatching.
As I told you, there are predatory birds in the area of that nest, so I bet the Maxwell's removed all the hatchlings through the door on the side of the box about 4 P.M (Texas time) and released them into the water at a safe place. The Mom will take it from there.
There will probably be a text note on the site later telling us what they did. I think I remember the same thing from last year.
Thanks, HEDGESVILLER, sorry I didn't get out to the shop... I saw the Haz Mat people near City Hospital doing some stuff, and now that you tell me there was a Mock Drill, then I guess that is what I saw...yes, I am glad I wasn't in there for that...esp when it gets mixed in with real emergencies, but those drills are necessary, that's for sure, so everyone can be familiar with protective gear, equipment, decontamination techniques and such...how to set up command, radio procedures, and so on. Good Evening to Ya' and Everyone else.
Home now, see NO mom in duck box. When adult leaves, she covers the eggs w/wood chips. Their forum should tell something. I never saw any chicks in the past couple days?! Hopefully their forum will something. Deb, that's a great bird pic you sent w/caterpillar dinner! I gotta have mine and get to Support Group mtg. BBL
Magpie--this one was supposed to be one of those DC evacuation drills w/ all of those citizens flocking here! Do you know that down in the Williamsburg area they have gates on exit ramps that they would close to prevent folks from stopping there?!
The forum is saying that there has NOT been any hatchings yet - so we didn't miss it. However one comment is telling about severe storm earlier in that area. Mom is supposedly out on a break and the 13 eggs are covered with the wood chips.
Lynn, good to know what was going on at the hospital. I went by there on the way to my Mom's after my shot today and wondered what on earth was going on. I saw vehicles with "Homeland Security" on them and felt a little frightened. My Mom lives about a city block away from there and I was concerned for her safety. I guess they had something in the Journal about it, but I must have missed it.
Glad you're touching base with us Wanda. Some thought you were having a "Knee Replacement" So glad it was a misunderstanding of words and just a shot! Hope it helps!
Oh, my goodness...I am so sorry that I mislead you all about my "New Knee". I have this cortisone shot twice a year and it was time to get another. I always joke about getting a "New Knee" for $300.00. I was hoping I could get a shot in my head and have a "New Brain", but Dr. said that one is not perfected yet! Knee feels pretty sore, but that is to be expected. I had gotten to the point that I couldn't do stairs, except for one at a time. It will be all good tomorrow. Then I can pick my peas and beans. Thank you all for your concern, but it was just a shot this time. Hope I can set aside enough time next Spring to have a REAL NEW KNEE put in.
DEB, saw an Oriole in my Mom's garden picking at something in the weeds. I had just told Mom that I would hoe her weeds and put the fabric mulch down when my knee was ready and she said she thought she should leave the weeds if there was something in there that would keep the Oriole coming back. LOL
Yes, Wanda, it's been mentioned in the paper a few times in the last couple of weeks...I had forgotten about it until I heard all of the chatter on the scanner this am! Glad your "new knee" will let you get back to your farmin' chores! Wishing I was in Missouri--that's where my mom (and sis) live now, and tomorrow is the mama's 89th birthday! Almost time for Jeopardy. Later!
Whew! Mother Wood Duck is back on those eggs, and they are visible again when she moves around a little. NATURE NUT, seems you hit the nail on the head, she "hid" them under the nest material. Thought I was losing it there for awhile. Now all we need is an evening visit at OUR nest to give us a boost. GLO - have you left for your 16-hour shift yet? Hope it goes okay. xo
Wanda, this is an Orchard Oriole. It was yellow which confused me. Turns out the male is yellow until it gets older. The picture is loading, but it takes a long time.
Speaking of Orchard Orioles...I saw one at NCTC a year or so ago on a bird-watching visit there on a Sunday...they are beautiful. Also saw one near the VA Center, at a place that I have seen a true red-headed woodpecker....been watching this year for it but have not seen it yet...they suffer from nest predation (well, other birds inhabit their nests before they get there ) from other woodpeckers like red-bellied 'peckers, so it might have lost its spot this year...It is a truly beautiful bird. Anyone else got them anywhere?
Deb, I would guess the one in my Mom's garden is the Baltimore Oriole...It was a florescent orange with black trimmings. We have several females that visit our bird bath occasionally, and they are a yellow-green, very pretty, but not eye-catching like the male. We do see the male here about once a year. Next Spring, we are going to put out strings for their nesting materials and maybe they will visit often.
NBC report sad, but good to see so many pandas alive and well. They are so close to their handlers that they would never make it in the wild. It looked like one was eating a rice krispie treat--LOL! The Mao Mao funeral just as reported in paper last week. Question about the wood duck nest....is it in an air shaft or something???

Good morning, everyone. Wanda, I hope the shot does it's job for you! It is cloudy here today, but it isn't supposed to rain.
Good Morning Sharon, Mits, Norma, Glo, Bev, Magpie, Wanda, Ceil, Mits, Megan and Deb.
Anyone know how to get rid of those "little pee ants". First time I've ever had them. I get too much rain.
Guess the rain drove them rascals in.
Hope all is well; Wanda hope you feel good after your shot. Ceil sorry there is a water break. Hope they get it fixed soon.
I have another nest of bluebirds. Ed noticed them. Don't know how many eggs.
oh wvgal i want bluebirds so bad. What did you do to get them? Anything special?
I had my first baby cardinal out here this morning.
Been watching for them for a while now.
Bev I'll switch ideas with you...know anything except spray that gets rid of pee ants?
Kidding I'll tell you anyhow. We call them sweet ants here, but I bet they are the same thing--very small.
PEE ANTS - TAKE THUMB, MASH DOWN, TWIST ONCE TOWARD THE LEFT. DEAD ANTS! :)
i got that from Lifehacker.com but thought it was worth a try. Terro works good on the bigger ants but if you have animals (I do) it is poison.
sharon is just too smart for us. Why didn't I think of that? Thanks works very well too. A little messy and time consuming but effective.
I do I do have animals ....
If you don't want to remove bird feeders. You can try place the bluebird box very far away at those heights.
You can buy Terro in little containers that the ants crawl in take the poison and bring it back to the nest. I still make sure to put it where the dogs can't get at it. They are a big pest here in SD. I would like to get all the nests in the yard, but can't because of the animals.

2 EAGLETS in nest!
yes, Jo I'm getting your e-mails....off to DDS..later.
Norma We don't think Wanda is getting a knee replacement - Just a shot maybe. Her statement was misleading I think.

Whoops! The tree branch moved on the heron cam and there is another one behind it......
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWW !! is right!
Do you think she is really comfy?
Well, I hadn't looked in on Buta Buta for a long time but she is still in the same spot I saw her last time. I looks like she could just melt down in between the 2 logs! What a stressful life she leads! :)
Norma I think you tricked me into the #100 comment LOL
I had been watching the numbers because I didn't relish the thought of getting the Poopy Facial!!!
Can I give it to you? LOL
I need to get some lunch...

HELLO DEB!---I was typing MORNIN'----Noticed it it's afternoon!!-----FABULOUS DAY!!!---cool & sunny!!
It isn't bad here, partly cloudy, no wind!

It is still morning here, Norma, so that would work for me!
I had to check!!---All 3 home!---Don't see din-din!!---ho!----or have they already eaten??

MORNIN' MOVIN' JIM---It's a COOL 63° here!!---might need a sweater this evening!!----ho!
You know, Liberty and Belle have to be the finest set of parents in history!
later---
Good morning, Norma.
No, "they" haven't eaten. The big chow hound, Pearl, ate a nice medium-sized fish herself.

Jim
And then there was one!
And it is my Baby Littley!
I saw the white spot on the head, too, Sharon.
I am off to get some stuff done, bbl.
I forgot to report that there is an adult at the Kent nest this morning.

Jim
Wow, just checking back in, see I missed a lot of Eagle action. Empty nest now, no live feed here either yet.
Thanks Mema for the Duck Update...yes, maybe if she does not take her 7 pm break, we can expect some action.
Those black chins are wingersizing...maybe soon...
Good to read everyone's comments, keeps me connected.
Time for some cam surfing then back to this one.
Fantastic weather here,in Martinsburg. xo
Liberty and Belle: Our Nest !!!!
And now a parent and at least one kid.
the parents are there, so beautiful
One Adult, One Child. Still Cam. Wow. seeing those two parents for that fleeting moment was great !
Boy, that was a blessed lucky few moments...now child all by itself, problaby chowing down on some gem of a fish.
Saw three chicks at Peregrine Harrisburg ledge, one was an adult I think and it flew off the pole near the nest out into the city..
baby in the nest, any guesses?
Paula is a good guesser! I can only say I don't think it is Tiny..not enough white. Sure looks settled in and cozy, though.
Waiting for company maybe.
Mother hummingbird just fed the babies. Looked like she was catching insects with her "tongue."
I know there is another word for that but I have to look up the spelling first.
I think the word is Proboscis but I am not sure.
And now we have a parent in the nest again.
Past Tense...parent WAS in the nest. Child still there.
I'm getting a 90-second refresh on the still cam, and still cannot open up live feed.
Time for a nap.
Jim
Well, la-di-dah - a second eaglet in our nest.
Must be something nice about the smell and feel of that nest on a sunny afternoon, to make them want to come back often.
Yes, both little Hummers are perched on the side of the nest now, gaping at the ceiling, I guess. They're so active today, I agree they could fledge either this P.M. or in the A.M.

Jim
Been watching Wood Duck on CamClickers all afternoon, seen parent and eggs...now..empty box and a bunch of feathers...what's going on? I've just been away from it for about ten minutes....it wouldn't happen that fast would it?
And now back to 1.
Last check on Tx Wood ducks showed no Mom w/the eggs. Taking a PM break---Oh well!
Daggone it, make that PAST TENSE again, only one in our nest now. Looks kinda like Tiny to me.
NATURE NUT: Where are the Eggs?
Does she cover them up when she leaves? During the afternoon while watching I could see good views of eggs underneath and when she would turn....or is my computer and my eyes playing tricks on me? I guess I should have left for that nap I was talking about awhile back...
Magpie,
Are you sure the Wood Duck eggs hadn't hatched? At least most of them?
Once they're all hatched that are going to hatch, they all jump off to rendezvous with their Mom in a pretty short time.
However, if I remember last year well, this nest, which is in somebody's yard and a ways from water, was threatened by a number of predatory birds waiting for them to jump. So the humans just opened the side of the box, removed the chicks and let them go in a safer place where Mom could find them.
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
Jo, you have mail I hope!
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
Well Costume Lady ! And how is that New Knee? We have been all abuzz about you....not knowing for sure if you were going in for surgery or a shot! And how did it all go?
Thanks for the info on Wood Ducks - I just can't figure out what happened in such a short time frame.
One still in our nest. I see a white dot so I think it is Tiny. Hope Lib brings food.
Sharon, you're Double E-S = Double Excellent Sharon. Thanks. xo
COSTUME LADY: Wait 'til you open up Yahoo and see all the message titles with the word WANDA in them...
Okay, MOVIN JIM - I will be searching for it, THANKS! Last year in the fall there were Wood Ducks at one of the ponds at NCTC - fabulous!
so Wanda, how was the shot???
Good evening all!
Sounds like you have been having a fun day. Hope that Wanda is feeling okay...cortisone injection sites usually get really painful a few hours after and for about a day and then the magic happens!!
Magpie, just caught up on last evenings blogs...the shop is in Eagle Plaza in H'ville. Called Irene's Used Furniture Plus. Today was slow. Guess the cooler weather kept people either in or enjoying outdoors. Aren't you glad you didn't have to work today?! That mock drill stuff really sounded like it was keeping Central hopping!
Magpie, Wanda, how are you?
I just looked at yesterday's pic of the Wood Ducks, which was taken at about 4:30 P.M., and you can clearly see that at least two chicks are hatching.
As I told you, there are predatory birds in the area of that nest, so I bet the Maxwell's removed all the hatchlings through the door on the side of the box about 4 P.M (Texas time) and released them into the water at a safe place. The Mom will take it from there.
There will probably be a text note on the site later telling us what they did. I think I remember the same thing from last year.
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
Got to go now and take care of business. Have a fun day checking the cams.
C(°ï®¡°)D
Jim
MOVIN - Mema Jo thought that might be a duck leg...cause later the parent was off for a break and everything looked intact....we should know soon....
Baby stayed in the nest just long enough for a few of you to see him...but he's Vamoosed now.
missed him, Magpie:(
Home now, see NO mom in duck box.
BBL
darn, they have shut off the FINLAND OVER THE WATER OSPREY NEST, thought they would do that, but, hoping they would not.
Magpie--this one was supposed to be one of those DC evacuation drills w/ all of those citizens flocking here! Do you know that down in the Williamsburg area they have gates on exit ramps that they would close to prevent folks from stopping there?!
Just got home and missed the visits. I will put the oriole picture on my page, now that I now for sure that is what it is.
Wood Duck Greenville TX
Link to Wood Duck Cam
Some thought you were having a
"Knee Replacement" So glad it was a misunderstanding of words and just a
shot!
Hope I can set aside enough time next Spring to have a REAL NEW KNEE put in.
story about PANDAS, is going to be on NBC NIGHTLY NEWS again.
DEB, saw an Oriole in my Mom's garden picking at something in the weeds. I had just told Mom that I would hoe her weeds and put the fabric mulch down when my knee was ready and she said she thought she should leave the weeds if there was something in there that would keep the Oriole coming back. LOL
Good evening, everyone!
What a pretty night!
Later!
OUr cam really fuzzing in and out...wonder when we are going to get our RP back???
Gonna go grab some grub...
Hope it goes okay.
xo
PAULA - Like your new Avatar.
MEMA JO - I just saw a good view of a bunch of eggs under Mommy Woody.
Not certain but check out wood duck mama at her left side.. could be one.
Mama Wood Duck keeps moving around -
Can't really see anything yet..
Jo, you should have mail...playing catch-up
It all came thru, Iris. Almost ready to reply.. Thanks!
FULL Moon tonight ...
Burrowing owls are in and out.
The LAKE WASHINGTON EAGLETS are growing so fast....:)
i think I see a chick hatching under Momma Wood Duck...anyone else think that???
Actually - 1:30 pm full moon Wednesday - so tonight and Wed should be good viewing...
The first successful bald eagle hatch has happened in the Black Hills this year. The nest has one known eaglet in it!
that is wonderful news, Deb...heading to the duck site..
