Here you go:

Whale Tangled in Rope Off Hawaii
LAHAINA, Hawaii (Dec. 3) -- A juvenile humpback whale entangled in hundreds of feet of heavy rope off the Hawaii coast was being tracked by marine experts Wednesday.
"The entanglement is life-threatening," said Ed Lyman, marine mammal response manager for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. "It's in the mouth, and it's over the body. It's yellow, polypropylene line, pretty heavy gauge, and it's several hundred feet of line on the animal."
A location transmitter was attached to the rope Tuesday after earlier rescue efforts failed because of rough water in the channel between Maui and Molokai, Lyman said.
"If the whale stays nearby and the weather cooperates, we can mount another effort," he said.
Lyman estimated the whale was tangled in 400 to 500 feet of rope that trailed in two long knotted strands. He estimated the whale is 2 to 5 years old, and about 30 to 35 feet long.
The effort to save the whale began Tuesday after a Pacific Whale Foundation tour boat spotted the mammal about three miles off Maui. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter also helped monitor the whale, he said.
The foundation has "a large fleet of boats, so they're great first-responders," Lyman said. "They do a lot of reporting, and they stood by this whale for a long time. Big brownie points on that, a big help."
Boaters were cautioned not to get too close, especially behind the tangled animal. Some boaters who have done so in the past have gotten their propellers caught in ropes.
"They get a Nantucket sleigh ride the wrong way," Lyman said, referring to whaling boats being dragged by harpooned whales.
The marine sanctuary, which was created by Congress in 1992 to protect humpback whales and their habitat in Hawaii, lies within the shallow warm waters surrounding the main Hawaiian Islands.

Ok, have now read through the blog.

Eagles are back! And, they have moved the log. Anyone see them do it? Man, I wish we had a live cam! We are missing a lot of action.

Look at that nice egg cup.

Ms Bookworm said...

Boy, the nest is starting to look like a fort! Nice high sides~~should stop the wind nicely for the eaglet(s)! Will keep them nice and warm.

Lolly said...

I do believe there has been a lot of nestorations this morning. How can I leave and get busy? Sigh!

Ms Bookworm said...

We're on the same page, Lolly! I need to go get busy too, but can't tear myself away!

Lolly said...

This morning I have to make two cherry cheesecakes pies for Laurel's birthday. 37 years ago she was born.

Lolly said...

You are up early this morn, Andy!

normabyrd said...

I keep thinking today is Sat!!---I'm not with the program this am!!

Ms Bookworm said...

Just haven't seen our eagles enough lately. My fault, not theirs. I've been getting here too late to catch them most days.

Lolly said...

Good morning, beautiful Norma! Can picture you there at your computer in your red jammies.

Lolly said...

Our eagle is not moving. Must be watching something,

Ms Bookworm said...

Hey,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY,LAUREL!!! HOPE YOUR DAY IS JUST THE BEST EVER!!!!

Sorry I didn't say that earlier! Guess the coffee is just now kicking in.

Actually, I was up much earlier--about 2:30 am (Pacific), but went back to sleep for a while. Have been doing that a lot lately.

Lolly said...

Guess I can stay on here long enough to eat my sausage and bisquits. No homemade bread this morning, Norma. But, bisquits will work.

Mema Jo said...

Good Morning All!
Just tunned in - took a couple "newer" clicks until I found you! Sure do need out new thread especially since it is Red Friday.

Ms Bookworm said...

Good Morning, Jo!
What's it like where you are this morning?

Lolly said...

Actually 71 was quiet for me. 72 Laurel was three weeks old. Remember that Christmas. Michael got a firetruck and a fireman's hat, as well as an Indian suit. He drove the firetruck around wearing his Indian suit. We put Laurel in his fireman'shelmet and took a picture. Oh, Michael did not like that one bit! He was one month shy of being 4.

Whoops! Here comes my sausage and bisquits. I am spoiled! And, with a warm up to my coffee.

Lolly said...

I'll go put pictures in the album, if they are different from Loweeda's.

Ms Bookworm said...

Lolly, all I can say is, I will NEVER forget THAT Christmas! Checked into the hospital at 12:00 am on Christmas morning, after attending the candlelight services at church. My water broke as soon as we got home from church! Didn't get a chance to hang up my coat, and we had to turn around and go to the hospital, with contractions 2 minutes apart! Didn't have Jen until 2:22 pm on Christmas, though.
She was face-up, and stuck!

I thought they were waiting for me - the late riser! So glad I saw Lib.
Need to check blood sugar and do meds.

Update for Mason

Ms Bookworm said...

Lolly,
That must be a CUTE pic with Laurel in Michael's helmet!
Wow, that sounds like a yummy breakfast! More coffee sounds like a good idea, too--but I'd better not, or I'll be bouncing off the walls!

Ms Bookworm said...

LOL, Norma! :oD You crack me up!
Bet you'd rather not build roads with the cold weather you're having back there! At least the kitchen is usually nice and warm!

Ms Bookworm said...

Thanks for the link to Mason, Jo.
Sounds like he's much more comfortable now. That's fantastic.
He's really come a LONG way. Such an inspiration!

Oh, I love to cook. I was a kindergarten teacher, but my first degree was for vocational home economics. Had an emphasis on early childhood, so with just 9 hours I added kindergarten.

Ms Bookworm said...

Say, has anyone heard from Dana this morning? I kinda hope she's sleeping in late. Doubt she's gotten enough sleep lately. Sure was good to talk to her yesterday on the blog! These eagles of ours will perk you up no matter what!

Lolly said...

Andy, Laurel was due Dec. 15. I was afraid she would come Christmas and I wanted oh so bad to be home with Michael. I started dilating before Thanksgiving. The doctor knew how I felt, and he said "How about Dec 4". So, I went in Dec 4. They broke my water and labor started. That was about 9 in the morning, she was born at 3:13 PM. I had a caudal, never felt one pain, and watched her being born. Back in my room by 6, having supper. Nurses could not believe I was going to have a baby. I only gained 17 lbs. I am tall, and only looked maybe 6 months pg. She weighed 7lbs. 6 oz.

Mits said...

Happy Birthday Laurel.
Thanks for the update on Mason, Jo
Thanks for the update on the Florida eagle, Paula

we could see a "Bit of snow". I have no clue yet what a "bit" will be.
Need a grocery store run this afternoon

Hair cut for me today! I'm Sure about that! lol

Lolly said...

Thank you, Mits. Will pass the greetings on to Laurel this afternoon.

Wahoo! Successfully loaded three pictures to the album. Would not let me do it the first time. One is a really good portrait. Not sure who, but I do believe they posed.

Mema Jo said...

I, like many others I am sure, have a breaking heart concerning Tai going to China.... :<( Just because we knew it would happen doesn't make it any easier.........

Ms Bookworm said...

Lolly,
My due date was Dec. 18th, and I went past it by a week. You were fortunate--I was unbelievably HUGE--looked like I was having twins! A lot of it was water, I guess. Jen was 8 lb 6 oz! Guess it wasn't ALL water!

Lolly said...

We might get a dusting of snow this morning. So far nothing. Snow is actually predicted for the Hill Country (Austin and San Antonio and over to Houston) south of us. Weird!

We are heading to south Texas next Friday for a long weekend. Sure hope for good weather that weekend.

Mema Jo said...

Lolly - I'm sure you'll help Laurel enjoy her special day... 37 years -
They grow up too fast! Tell her she is getting lots of well wishes!

Lolly said...

Okay, guys! I am heading to the kitchen. Have enjoyed the chatting this morning. Thanks to Lib and Belle for making my day!

Have a great day everyone. I am off to bake.

May THE eagles grant you another visit. How is that for today's blessing?

December 4

Tai Shan will be sent to the People’s Republic of China in early 2010, as stipulated in the agreement between the Zoo and the Chinese government. The exact date of his departure has not been determined due to the lengthy process of finalizing permits and preparing Tai Shan for the trip.

Under the agreement, giant panda cubs born at the National Zoo belong to China and are to be sent to the Wolong's Beifengxia Base in Ya'an, Sichuan sometime after the cub turns two. In April 2007, shortly before his second birthday, China granted the National Zoo a two-year extension for Tai Shan to remain in Washington, D.C.; that extension expired in July but the Zoo was provided a second extension to January 2010.

Tai Shan will be trained to enter and calmly remain in a specially designed crate for his flight to China. Logistics and details for his safe transport are being finalized. It is expected that Tai Shan will enter the breeding program in China, where he will contribute to species conservation.

Mei Xiang and Tian Tian also belong to China and are on a ten-year loan as part of a research, conservation and breeding program. This agreement expires in December 2010. National Zoo and Chinese officials will not begin negotiations about their future until spring 2010.

Since his public debut in December 2005, Tai Shan has delighted millions of visitors who have come to the Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat at the Zoo to see him. He also has touched fans from around the world through the Zoo’s giant panda web cam, which has drawn millions of visitors annually since his birth.

“Tai Shan leaving Washington is terribly sad for the Zoo, the community, and his fans around the world,” said acting National Zoo Director Steve Monfort. “He has become so special to the staff and the public—and we have learned so much from him in just four short years. By providing a two-year extension, our Chinese partner, the China Wildlife Conservation Association, allowed us the chance to learn more about giant pandas by charting his growth and development. It’s hard to say goodbye, but we are so thankful for the many memories and huge opportunities Tai has provided to the National Zoo.”

The details for farewell activities aren't set yet, so please check back to find out them.

Lolly said...

Thanks, Andy, Jo, and Mits! Laurel will enjoy getting the messages. I will email them to her at school. I love email, in that I can talk to Laurel while she is at work.

normabyrd said...

LOLLY--I noticed you had sausage & biscuits!! ho!

Ms Bookworm said...

Wow, Jo!
Guess you'd better stock up on groceries now! We're supposed to have another day of winds from the northeast, and then heavy clouds, turning to rain by late Sunday. Next week's forecast shows lots of rain, with one day of only clouds.
My favorite kind of weather, but I'd better work on my patio plants before the rain hits! Have a few I need to trim and prune and repot.
Had wanted to wash windows, but maybe not on the back side of house.
Not enough overhang to keep the rain off them. Think I'll just do the front windows--plenty of overhang out there to keep them dry.

normabyrd said...

PAULA--Found the whale info on 'NEWS STORIES TODAY'!!
w/talk later----

Lolly said...

Whoops, thanks, Margy! I am going to copy and paste all greeting. lol

Ms Bookworm said...

I'm bummed that Tai is going back to China, too. Hope our Diego/Cloud stays here for a LONG time, or I'll be heartbroken!

Ms Bookworm said...

Norma,
I'm hoping that my check order shows UP today! Have bills to pay, but dummy me ran out of checks! (We don't get charged for new checks if we only order 1 box at a time--a recent development--but I'm used to ordering about 800 checks at a time) Bummer!

Ms Bookworm said...

Good thing I can pay some bills either by phone or online. I need to start doing ALL bill paying online, I guess, but we had a couple of incidents of identity theft in the last 5 years, so I'm a bit leery of it. First incident, it was a bank employee who was the culprit!

Mits said...

Do other zoos with pandas have to send their cubs to China?

Yes. The San Diego Zoo has had to send two pandas born there to China. One of them, Hua Mei, has given birth to seven cubs in China! Along with the National Zoo, the zoos in Atlanta and San Diego are preparing to send their young pandas to China in approximately the same time frame. We are the only zoo that has been granted such a lengthy extension.

Mits said...

ALL panda cubs go back to their home in China when they are 2 yrs old, unless China extends an extension....ALL pandas on loan to zoos around the world are the property of China.

Ms Bookworm said...

Second incident, someone who worked at the gas station used our gas credit card number. Gosh, they didn't even work at the local gas station--somewhere else within the company. AARGH! Still gets my dander up!

magpie said...

Just got a message from Steve, he has been traveling the last few days and will have a look when he can regarding the goofy blog post numbers

Thanks Steve !

Ms Bookworm said...

Gosh, Mits,
I didn't realize that about the pandas! Guess I'd better start getting used to the idea of them leaving. Sigh... Better make the most of the opportunity to watch them while we can!

Ms Bookworm said...

Cool, Margy--and thanks in advance, Steve! Sure has been mixed up here lately.

Well, I've loved being able to actually gab a while with you all, but I'd better go get busy if I'm to accomplish much Christmas-wise today! The lights on the tree are tricky, and can take a while to connect together in the proper order so that all of them will light. Quite a challenge! Would like to at least have the tree in place and lit when Hubby gets home from work. Better run! Will have a progress report for you later on the decorations. Have a FANTASTIC FRIDAY, and God bless! Later, alligators! :o] ;o}
