Shooting of a clerk at a grocery in Culpeper---gunman still on the loose---be careful!!!!!

stronghunter said...

Lynn, we had a modified lockdown this morning at school. I think it was because of the shooting. I am also wondering it it is related to the shooting of Kathryn's friend's father.

Mema Jo said...

I am back from running to grocery store. I did pretty well but now I
need to put my feet up.

Hubby is collecting leaves with the mower - Pulled a Lynn and just came in and said It is Cold out there - need a heavier coat!

ceil said...

Suzanne really did love Germany. What would she do with her cats?

Judie said...

Oh Sheetz, a gunman in Culpepper! Maybe it is Lynn's naked teenager. Look out, Shirley!

Okay, I'mmmmmm back! There is the tiniest light at the end of my tunnel which might get bigger over the weekend. At least the feeling of desperation has gone away. Really got overwhelmed for some reason.

I'll never catch up so just hope everyone is well, that dr. visits are good ones, that Jo finds a lemon cake, that Shirley doesn't have to have a blood sugar test, and that Norma misunderstood the S word -- S is for sugar, and that a strong wind comes and blows Lynn's leaves into her neighbor's yard. that Miss Bean continues to improve, and all joints and knees and shoulders heal immediately.

Good luck on the exam tonight, Andy.

Cheers,
Judie

ceil said...

Lynn it doesn't seem any different.
Have gotten some work done that needed to be taken care of.
Judie know the feeling. So glad it passed.

Ms Bookworm said...

Hi, Everyone!

I'm back, and trying to catch up a bit on what I've missed, but it's nearly impossible. Have been SOOO busy with homework and studying!
Absolutely gotta do well on the last couple of regular weekly tests tonight and Friday, and next week is Finals week! Have a class Project to do, too. Just not enough hours in the day!

Looks like Judie's having trouble keeping up, too--totally understandable, with all she has to do!

See that quite a few of you have new avatars! Really like them!
Megan, LOVE your turkey lurkey!
Lynn, your hedgehog is cute, and really quite appropriate!
Shirley, your owl is adorable! My uncle, who was a veterinarian, used to have one for a pet, many, many years ago!
Diann, LOVE the expression on the kitty's face! Priceless!
Wanda, that's extremely good advice!
and Margy, the picture of the moon is beautiful!
I've been fine, but really having to concentrate on school. Matter of fact, must get back to studying for tonight's exam! Hope you guys will keep me posted about the Alcoa chicks' banding--guess they've had to postpone it.
Still have a pair of Cooper's Hawks here in our big front yard tree. Saw one white-crowned sparrow yesterday! Haven't seen one in quite a while.
Hope you all are having a fantastic day. Will try to get back here to say goodnight.

Hi all! Have been working on Jacob's book this morning, but now taking a break. I love my laptop but sitting at the pc makes me stiff. Have to get up and move around. So, went down and gathered a few pecans. While down there a Red Shouldered Hawk was screaming at the top of one of our trees. Finally, spotted him, his color was blending in with the fall color of the leaves. Where's my camera when I need it?

It is just beautiful here today. 74 and bright blue sky!

Mushrooms, huh? Wonder if he will remember any of his actions?

See where there will not be a banding. Drat!
Well, guess I will head back to my computer.

stronghunter said...

"Naked Man Hit by Train Arrested."

That statement kind of grabs your attention for a couple of reasons. Once you get past the naked part, how many people who get hit by trains live to get arrested?

stronghunter said...

Wonder if the woman who ran into her house to call the cops is one of my bridge buddies?

stronghunter said...

Good to see that our Judie is back!

Lynn, you got the news about the shooting in Culpeper quickly. When they called for the modified lockdown, I did not have any students, so I was on my computer, checking the local newspaper website. It took a little while for it to appear. How did you get the news so quickly?

So there won't be a banding of the Australia birds? Too bad. It would have been interesting.

Will see you when I get home.

Hello - Today being Wednesday is my
day to take Alexis to her gymnastics - Hubby is picking her up and then I will do the taking to gym. Next Wednesday is her last day and you get to stay and enjoy the hour.. I don't think the cartwheel has yet been achieved - but sure has made lots of new friends. It seems to a 4 yr old the word 'friend' is very important.
I'll be back after the party for her dad around 8:00.. BBL

hedgie said...

Done for the day! Didn't get to using the mower, but hopefully Fri. or Sat. for that........there are not a whole lot left to come down (she says w/ fingers crossed!), so maybe nature will blow them away. Still need to do along road, but it is so hard because of the bank---have to blow uphill into the woods, and clean out the culvert as I go....about 200 ft. of road frontage, about 8-10 ft. wide.
Bumped my bad knee on the ladder---tried to blow balcony off from on the
ladder rather than lugging 100 ft. of cord up to the bedroom....didn't work terribly well. And turned my ankle, but not bad!

hedgie said...

So Shirley, was wondering if they had caught whoever killed Kathryn's friends father.....was it in the same area as the grocery store? Terrible, but at least the clerk today isn't badly wounded---think they said arm.

If Suz went to Germany she would be able to take the cats with her.....but she has 6 and they would have to travel coach with her! What a nightmare that would be!!!

hedgie said...

Jo, tell Ed he's doing it the right way!! I have all of the stuff needed to blow and mulch into a bin but I can't mount the stupid thing or empty it when it's full......and mower won't fit in garage with it on the mower, so it's just stored!

Glad to see you Judie and Andrea!!! Miss your cheery reports when you aren't on! Glad that things are looking better for you, Judie. Good luck tonight, Andy---not that you need it; you always do well!

ceil said...

Lynn stay off that ladder. Helen's sil got up on the roof years ago to clean the gutters fell off and broke her neck. She was lucky it was not severed. They live in Frederick and flew her to Shock Trauma. Had to wear a halo for a while but was very fortunate.

Hi, Gang!

Back for a quick 'Howdy'--Hubby should be home soon. Have to LOL about the comments re the guy hit by the train! Really not funny, though. Don't want anyone like that running around MY neighborhood! No WAY!
Forgot to mention that our 11 y.o. gd is into cheerleading, and has been asked to join the level 1 competitive team, to replace a girl who left. Jo, give Alexis a few more years of practice, and she may surprise you by doing back flips the length of the backyard, as Courtney surprised us! Truly amazing!! It just wears you out to watch her!
Please say some prayers for me for tonight's test. Gotta do VERY well so it raises the old GPA! Test is on antibiotics and analgesics--never anything simple!
Hope you all have a great evening; I'll be back to say good night, probably pretty late, after school. :o]

I can't get used to this DARK early PM!! Writing now 'cuz I'll probably fall asleep soon.Fubby went to bed at 8PM last night!
Would like to see baseball, too---it's getting late to go to Jo's for the Party! Wanda, are you going to crash??? tee hee
Gotta go eat some dinner---already had salad & 1/2 avacado--gonna throw a tiny filet in the broiler.

stronghunter said...

Will keep going for a little while, but not long. I got up at about 4:50 this morning so I could go buy the doughnuts. I will be collapsing soon.

Lolly said...

Shirley, I would have collapsed long ago! Laurel gets up every morning about that time so she can work out before the boys get up. She gets on her treadmill and then does sit ups. Bless her!

Lolly said...

She is 5' 11" and has gone from size 12 to size 8. She has lost 25 pounds but has lost more in inches.

stronghunter said...

Impressive, Lolly. Of course, I ate a bunch of doughnuts today. I did not work out.

I am a little worried about one of the boys in the class. I sent him off to his other classes all sugared up. Strangely, the teacher who has the most trouble with him is probably as hyperactive as he is. I really think they are too much alike.

Hi....very sad news:(

Elderly Sloth Bear Dies at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo
Merlin, the National Zoo’s senior male sloth bear, died this morning after a 48-hour illness. On Monday morning, Nov. 2, he underwent a routine physical examination. Although the examination went well, his anesthetic recovery was prolonged, and he had not returned to normal by the afternoon. While under observation, veterinarians noticed that he had vomited some blood-tinged fluid.

Due to concerns with this prolonged recovery, the vomiting and his previous medical history of a gastric volvulus (“twisted stomach”) in 1994, he underwent additional evaluation and diagnostics at the National Zoo’s hospital later the same day. Based on the results of his blood work, ultrasound and radiographs, the animal care team determined he required surgery, during which they corrected a partially twisted spleen. Following the procedure, Merlin showed signs of increased wakefulness, but never fully recovered. Sequential blood work analysis suggested additional metabolic compromise, including possible circulatory shock and renal failure.

The bear was attended by staff who remained on 24-hour watch and provided intensive care continuously for two days, until he passed away this morning. A necropsy will be performed later today, but results will not be available for several weeks.

Merlin was born at the National Zoo in December 1981. He sired a total of seven cubs. The Zoo has two females on exhibit, Hana and Khali.

National Zoo scientists have been doing research on sloth bear conservation since the 1970s and have estimated that about 6,000 to 11,000 sloth bears remain in the wild with their biggest threat being the loss of habitat. The IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species categorizes sloth bears as vulnerable.
In the wild, these animals are found in the forests of India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. A 2008 Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan Life Table reveals that the oldest male sloth bear in captivity died at age 29.

Sloth bears have shaggy, dusty-black coats, pale, short-haired muzzles and long, curved claws that they use to excavate ants and termites. Additionally, their long snout, along with their lips, allows them to create a vacuum-like seal to suck up the insects. Sloth bears are the only bears to carry young on their backs.

Mits said...

I know the Giant Pandas are the stars of the zoo, but I took to the sloth bears, especially Merlin, and spent alot of my trail time, especially if there was another volunteer up at the sloth bear exhibit.....I will miss him terribly

stronghunter said...

I am 5'7"...I was diagnosed with osteopenia last month. I have to bolster my calcium and vitamin D intake to prevent full-on osteoporosis. yay.

I have a five year old niece with two broken lower arms, from two different falls, she is in pink casts.
She had to take asthma medicines early in life, might have low bone density now, she is being tested and will be treated.

hedgie said...

Training, huh, Margy? So they hired someone new???

hedgie said...

Missed Diann....guess she didn't get her blog built yet....:(

Delphia - they decided they couldn't band the 3 falcons today - truck they needed was in a wreck... They want input now as to what sex are the falcons chicks. They are going to name them......

I am going to take a quick scan of the cams and then it will be time to hit the hay.

Well, talking about height.....I am between 5' 8" and 5' 9" and I have not lost any of it. At retreat last year we were talking about loosing height and the others could not believe I had not lost height. We measured and I am as tall as I was at 14 when I got my drivers licence.

I would be glad to loose and inch, then I could find slacks that are long enough! lol

Oh, Margy! I feel for your little niece with two broken arms. Bless her heart!

All is well on the cams....

Lynne, sorry...forgot to say that hope your kitty feels better.

Dephia, I took med for 4 yrs. for osteopenia, along with calcium and D....only to find out it hadn't done any good! So now take a yearly IV infusion of Reclast--- my second round was in Sept. They won't do a follow-up scan until the 3rd year. But have gone 5 yrs. w/o a fracture---except for a toe or two! What a pain!! Hope you have good results.

Lolly said...

Nite, Jo! And good nite to all who have turned in.

I am thinking about it myself, though it really is a little early for me.

hedgie said...

Wonder where Wanda is going to take GeeGee shopping??? Should be fun!

I am going to say goodnight, too. Long day with hard work and a lot of fresh (cold) air! Bet I'll sleep like a log.
Prayers for all in need, for peace, and in thanks for our many blessings.
Talk to you tomorrow.

Hi, Everyone,
Well, I made it home from school OK. I'm kinda dragging, though. Not used to the time change yet, I guess. Seems weird to go to school after dark! Got a B on last week's test, which is nothing short of a miracle! It was a tough one! Thank the Lord for that one! Thanks for all the prayers, you guys!
Helen, I'm so sorry to hear about Merlin! Prayers for you and everyone else at the zoo. I remember seeing the sloth bears when we visited there in (I think it was) 1999 or 2000. Love the zoo! ((Hugs)) It's nice that the zoo has two of his daughters, and that he sired so many cubs. Quite a legacy. I'll miss him too, even though I don't live nearby.
Jo, I'm sorry your ice cream melted! If I hadn't had to go to school, I'd have at least kept you company here! Gotta have sugar free ice cream, though, doggone it!
And Happy Birthday to Alexis' dad!
Judie, you've made my day with the news about unemployment benefits being extended! Sure hope I hear from them SOON!
Shirley, those donuts of yours must have been heavenly! You had me drooling! Sleep well tonight!
Have been thinking of Suzanne--hope if she decides on Germany (which sounds awesome!) that she can work out taking her kitties along with her!
Lynne2, sorry to hear your kitty is under the weather--prayers for a quick recovery! Prayers that all goes well at the cardiologist for you, too!
Margy, so sorry to hear about your niece with TWO broken arms! Wow, poor kid! Hope and pray she heals up quickly!
Well, my caboose is dragging, so I think I'll call it a day. The night light's on, the porch light's automatic, and the eye scanner is enabled. If anyone comes in late tonight, please don't slam the door. Prayers for everyone being said, and wishes for a good night's sleep for everyone. Talk to you tomorrow.
Good night! :o]

Hope it's a good day for everyone.

Finland looks rather cold and windy, seems to have a faster refresh now with the cam back up.

Last official dayshift coming up for me, time to get ready and hit the road.

Am already running late. Have to work until 7:00 tonight.

Good morning Eagle dudettes and dudes.
Chilly, but NO 20's this am. Cloudy...but no precip----wouldn't mind a bit if it decided to rain so that I didn't have to go out and do more leaf work!

Looks like a skiff of snow or very heavy frost in Finland water nest today.

Morning, Dana. Good to see you on the blog!

Okay, so I have been doing the voting thing for Train's Hey, Soul Sister video on Vh1 Top 20 Countdown. I don't think the Train fans are quite as good at voting as Bob Quinn's fans are but hopefully they will get in the top 20 this week! :) No fans no where can top the eaglet momsters when you get us going! :)

Good Morning All! It is a chilly one!
Getting ready for 2 daughters to meet up with me - later going to lunch with them. It will be a good day.

Hi,

Good morning again. On my planning block now. I am wondering if it is snowing in Finland. It looks like it could be at the water nest.

Mema Jo said...

Sharon the good old remedy of warm water and salt gargle should help it go away. It's worth a try

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

o, here I am, minding my own business. Go in the kitchen to fix me a peanut butter and banana sandwich (yummy) and what comes crawling down from the cabinet??? A SPIDER, A GREAT BIG SPIDER!!! OMG!! How do they get in??? I want to move!!!

Mema Jo said...

He is a left over from Halloween I bet!
Did you send him to spider heaven?

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Yep, I did. He is laying in there in the sink. Tom will have to get him when he gets home. I sprayed him with ant spray. Don't know if the ant spray got him or he drown! Either way, he ain't moving and that is good thang!!!!

stronghunter said...

I see that Paula was thinking the same about snow in the water nest in Finland. Checked their weather forecast--snow and fog. Temp about 30.

Mema Jo said...

Don't know yet what is at Finland but the Ferry Boat is still cruising along.

Daughter has arrived - see you all later.

stronghunter said...

My mother used to say she killed unwanted bugs twice, Sharon--by poisoning and drowning them. Sounds like you have the same method.

You can't wash it down the drain?

stronghunter said...

Snow showers in forecast for Pix Pa, so if Judie wasn't seeing snow last night, she might see it today.

Can't see the Snowman cam from school. It's blocked.
