Bai Yun is laying on her side now, trying to get some sleep. She was biting her foot ahile ago. Now she's trying to cover herself with the straw!

I'm here NORMA watching three windows;fish in Netherlands, SD Panda and Ms. Swallow, and my friend from Richmond just called and wants me to go to the pool up the street with her. I swear. I am not a swimmer and I hate sitting in the sun when it is hot, but I have kind of staled her off now for almost two weeks, sooooo. :( I thought I was going to have a day on here.
Tonight my husbands relatives that are staying in Duck, NC are coming for dinner. Oh well, I'll enjoy the blog as long as I can.

I've been watching the SD panda since 4! She is having a time, just can't get comfy. She got a little bit of sleep about an hour or so ago, but now she's just sitting there looking to see if the cub was gonna pop out. She's been nesting in that straw all day too. Now looks like she's eating it! Sure wish she'd have that baby before I leave, that would be awesome to see!

Morning, Robyn, you're welcome. That's a really neat cam, but those schools yesterday were so large they blocked the sun from the coral! Looked like night. Haven't really been watching too much today, Bai Yun has been very restless, thinking maybe her cub may arrive soon! She's actually laying down now, first time in quite a while. Guess she wore herself out throwing all the straw at the cam!

Yes, I think she's gonna have that cub any time, and DANG!!!! I have to leave. I'd love to stay, but my other cube mate is due to arrive shortly. DARN! I've been watching her since 4, and I just know she's gonna have that baby today! Take pics, somebody, and send them to me. Have to send the image as a postcard, then you can save the pic that's on the postcard. Saved image will NOT put an extension to the filename, but it will save image. If you want, you can add rename the file and add .jpg, but the extension is not necessary to view the pic!

SUZANNE had been watching BAI YUN since 4:00 a.m. when she left at 11:30---I started watching about 11:00---They took the cam off of her twice then----When I checked back in it was still off her!!---Maybe they don't know we have NURSE ANNE-MARIE watching her!!!---BLESS HER HEART!!

I remember a while back one of the Pandas threw her cub right after birth. Sad but it did happen, maybe something like that happened, if so glad they are showing it. I checked SD TV stations but there isn't anything so maybe that is good news.

Bai Yun is pregnant! We have confirmed via ultrasound that Bai Yun is carrying at least one fetus that appears to be developing normally. A twin has not been confirmed nor ruled out at this time.
It can be difficult to get the ultrasounds accomplished due to many factors. First, Bai Yun’s hormones are making her very lethargic. Recall that in many bear species that inhabit cold regions, bears will hibernate in the winter and give birth to their young while in their dens. Pandas do not hibernate, but a female who is pregnant or pseudopregnant experiences a type of reduced activity level that mimics that of a hibernating bear. She is biologically driven to reduce her appetite and lay still for long periods of time!
Another factor is that her lack of appetite can make her less motivated to participate in an ultrasound. She usually receives rewards during training sessions in the form of apples, biscuits, or carrots. When her appetite is suppressed, these treats do not entice her like they usually do, so our keeper staff has to get creative. Our recent ultrasound found keeper Angie feeding Bai Yun apples flavored with some honey, which worked beautifully. Our bear cooperated fully and allowed the veterinarian to get a good, long look at her.
The vets have their own challenges in obtaining ultrasound images. If Bai Yun does have any bamboo in her belly, the gas and debris of her gut can mask the reproductive tract. If Bai Yun is panting heavily, the image moves in and out of the field of view. Since the panda has a Y-shaped uterus, even finding the upper sections of the organ can require some hunting. Once a fetus has been located, on some days the image quality isn’t perfect for a variety of reasons. But this time, conditions were excellent.
Dr. Meg Sutherland-Smith was able to obtain stellar images, showing a fetus in advanced stages of development. The images showed some bone development in the spine and skull, well-formed limbs, and even tiny claws developing on the little paws. The fetal membranes floated freely in an arc above the fetus as it wiggled and squirmed during the ultrasound.
Once we are a week out from delivery, at this point to be determined by measurements taken by the vets from their recorded ultrasonic images, we will institute a 24-hour birth watch for Bai Yun. We will be looking for signs of labor: increased time spent in the den, increasing restlessness that contrasts with her current lethargy, excessive nest building and, finally and most telling, intense and sustained genital licking. When this occurs, we will be minutes to hours away from a birth.
It is still possible that no cub will be born. Bai Yun has been confirmed pregnant with twins in the past, but she has never given birth to twins. One fetus was clearly documented to have disintegrated in utero. This may yet happen. But chances are very good that we will be watching Bai Yun cradle an infant panda within a few short days.

I would say it is time for the 24 hour watch. She was restlesst this morning, messing with the straw in the nest and licking herself, up to the time they moved the camera anyway.
Well I was watching Bai in her den and resless in what apeared as labor. then the camera turned to Su out side on a log sleeping. She then moved and only the log remains.

If you read the blog for SD it one person asks why the camera won't be on Bai when she gives birth. Another asks if the cameras are stuck is that a good sign. No answers yet.

Whoooo on channel 4 doing a Starbucks coffee test. Ooopss #1 girl liked was Dunkin Donuts, other guys favorite was McDonalds and #3 person almost choose one that wasn't Starbucks but changed her mind at last minute and wrote down a different number it was Starbucks. Oh yes they are raising Starbuck 10 cents.

Champagnes corks are again popping at the San Diego Zoo's panda research center. Prolific panda mom Bai Yun gave birth to her fourth cub at 1:30 p.m. today. Mother and cub are fine, as far as zoo officials know. The proud papa is the zoo's panda patriarch, Gao Gao.... Applause!!!! I just wish they had let us see it darn.. Cam is on Mei Sheng still...
Video of the birth will be available on the zoo's “panda cam” Web site later today.

Hello, don't know who the rights to the panda birth at SD go to, but at the National Zoo in DC, Tai's birth was not shown live, those rights belonged to the Animal Planet and were released the next day, and the cam went to 24/7 viewing at that time. Next few days are critical for the cub.

Don't quote me, but I don't think AP and SD are in partnorship together...SD says they will be giving us a sneak peek inot othe den within the next 24 hours.
This is rare natural mating, but from what I heard from people who watch this site on a regular basis and talking to the keepers at our zoo, they were really going at it. Pandas are very poor love makers, the males are not very good at it...sorry fellows:).
My ex must have been part panda hahaha.

Howdy Mits n Robn well there is a video of them going at it i watched and sure sounds like they were enjoying the moments...lol Maybe thats why our Mei didnt get pregnant he was all wore out and low sperm count..lolll
Now its changed to Su Lin,s area... Thanks for that news Mits... maybe tomarrow i can slide over and visit Jo just afew minutes as i am off work.. Just didnt want to tire her out or intrude on family visits...
I just relized that Su Lin was born 2 years ago on August 2nd 2005 and now has anew baby brother or sister born on August 3rd 2007 awsome Mom!!!
Panda cub born! (August 3, 2007)
Bai Yun gave birth to a single cub today following a 2.5-hour labor. Our animal care staff observed parturition at 1:31 p.m. via a closed-circuit camera installed at the Giant Panda Research Station birthing den. This is a delicate period for the cub, but Bai Yun is an experienced mother and the Giant Panda Team will be monitoring the pair around the clock. The Zoo’s Panda Cam will provide a sneak peek into the den within the next 24 hours.
Hard to relize our Buta Buta will be 1 year old in 33 days.. Time has really gone fast and she is over 50 lbs and hopefully Tai Shan's wife to be..lol

Ohhhh the video of the birth is on the site for us to view... its 2:05 minutes long...they said it was the quietest birth they ever saw... Although you dont see the baby you only see her holding her belly...

My son was just at the SD zoo last week...on Thursday. He got some pics of the pandas, but I don't recall which ones he got to see.
They have at least a half of dozen or so pandas there, Paula, The expectant Mom has been out of the public eye for the last 2 weeks. It is a beautiful zoo, did he like it??? Great news about Jo coming home tomorrow, I know Ed will be very happy, and all of her kids also. What a great day:):)!

Mits - he loved the zoo. I got to see it about 1 1/2 years ago, but didn't get to see the pandas. It was the first week they were letting people in to see Su Lin and the line was about 1 1/2 hours long!

I was going to send her an eCard today for her laptop, ran into flash player problems, which I just got fixed. And now I read she couldn't get the internet anyway, so, later for that....

thank you glo. I know your in bed by now because its so late but I did get to see the video. What I didnt realize that I sat and watched the birth at work before they turned it off and didnt know what I was watching. What a privileged.

Yes, Jim, that does refresh like that sometimes, and Norma, Suzanne can just go to their site on Monday a.m. to see the video of the birth, but there is really nothing on it. If they ever get on to the cub den, and I see it, I'll send her a pic, I send pics from there all the time.

When I got back on-line yesterday, and read Suzannes' comments, I immediately went to SD. Been watching it most of the a.m.
In the 2 years that I have been watching the cams at SD, I have never seen them doing all this bouncing around between cams, like they are doing now.
