Lovely Sunday Morning to Everyone! And we DO have SUN today! Great story, Steve!! Will be interesting to see if/who uses that platform! Now they just need a cam & so do we!
Good Morning - happy to see the sun shinning to start my day. Great story you found and I hope they have success. Wish we could have a follow up story in a few months.
Not too much going on yet - I also get the weird message I cannot understand at Atlanta cam... Hope no one went down there from Bluefield and took some valuable merchandise home with them! lol
Hello again PAULA, NATURENUT, CIEL and Helen, oh VICKY too.
Boy Steve, you are on the ball with the new thread today. What an interesting story about trying to get eagles to set up housekeeping. I hope they do and they also get a cam up there for us to watch.
MORNIN' VICKY---HELEN---PAULA---NATURENUT---CEIL---JO---& CANDY!!! It is a GLORIOUS day---BRIGHT SUNSHINE--BLUE SKIES with temp of 63°---How long has it been since the ROYAL COUPLE have been home receiving callers???---ho!---
CANDY--Did you all beat BOSTON??? Didn't watch football yesterday!!---WVU played Thursday---We beat AUBURN!!---we have a new coach--and haven't been winning every game!--ho!--ho!----NOW DALLAS IS LOSING TOO!!---BIG TIME!!
How are you doing, Candy? It's been a while, hasn't it?
So Cal is just ramping up the humidity from the desert conditions with the winds...supposed to be in excess of 90% now and foggy, but I don't see the fog right here. It's still going to top the present 57° by at least 25° this afternoon.
READ on earlier blog---SHARON is doing great & has surgery scheduled!!!---PROUD of you BLUEFIELD SHARON---non-smoker!!--We WV folks are TOUGH!---Lots of prayers & GOOD THOUGHTS being sent your way!!!!---
Forgot to thank STEVEN!!---TRULY is a COOL story!!---Hope all goes well!!!!---(remember these eagles are very particular as to how the sticks are placed in the nest) ho!
Checiing in from emails. I am so far behind. JIM, I hope you aren't going to have those bad fires again or are they already going on out there.? I haven't seen much tv. NORMA Yes we beat Boston College yesterday big time. I watched your W. Va. game on Thursday. Go EEEEEEERRRRRRRSSSSSSSSSSS. Our PE teacher is a WV fan as she went to school there.
Hi Norma, Candy & Jim!! I did just speak with the Germany gals. They did turn the clocks back over there last night.. so it was only 5 hrs difference. We turn our back 11/2 However my digital clock automatically set itself back - I was sleeping away thinking it just wasn't time to get up! It fooled me!
Norma, I think we have seen this 'family' (?) of Euuwwiies before; howsomeever, it is possible they are migrating. I believe many Turkey Vultures migrate as far south as Panama, at least.
Some remain through the winter here in So Cal and the Southwest, but I'm not sure many do not migrate southward here too.
Lisa would better know how they behave in the BW area.
Yes, it does, Norma. It is bringing down the leaves, too. I just walked along the curb and shuffled through my neighbor's leaves. I want them to blow on down the street, instead of into my yard. It got rid of some of them!
Wow, I just finished the last of my emails. It is the first time I have been caught up in quite awhile. If sure feels good. I have been at it most of the afternoon.
Hey DEB. You have some beautiful pics of the eagle train ride and NCTC open house. I finally found out how to see them. Duh. and then I was giving Dana credit on here for them before Mits brought me awake. :)
I see the eagle is back at BWO. Hey JIM, I do see something down at the bottom of the Hummer nest and it looks like a different color (whiter) that the rest of the nest. Could be an egg?
I hope you are having a good sleep by now Magpie. My husband worked as a telecommunicator at 911 in Dare Co. down here for 20 years before he retired. It is a grewling job with all the changing of shifts.
I just read Steve's story of the Michigan Eagles. I wish them luck, but if the female is anything like our Belle, she will never be satisfied. LOL Like Jo, I would like to hear a follow up on their progress.
Hughesnet finally let me off the penalty! So getting caught up on mail and blog! REDSKINS WON AGAIN!!!! Good to see Vicky and Candy today! Great story from Steve! And Aussie link from Jo! So your birdie went back to his own nest, huh Wanda? House will be quiet and a little lonelier now!
Check out this update on the Bald Eagle that was found on the tracks of the Potomac Eagle Train last Saturday, the day before we took the train! We heard about this when we rode the train on Sunday.
This adult male Bald Eagle was admitted to the Wildlife Center on October 19 - the 22nd eagle admitted during 2008 - from the panhandle region of West Virginia. The bird was observed along railroad tracks by workers of the Potomac Eagle Tour Train and was rescued by a biologist from the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources and a Potomac Eagle engineer [who waded into the river to retrieve the bird].
Upon admission, the bird was in good body condition but had an obvious left-sided wing droop. After a physical exam and x-rays, it was determined that the eagle had a fractured radius very close to the joint and a dislocated left elbow. Due to the chronic nature of the dislocation and the amount of callus material around the joint, it was determined that the wing could not be surgically repaired to the extent needed for full flight.
As a consequence, the eagle will be brought to surgery on October 24 to fuse the elbow joint. This procedure will prevent pain associated with chronic dragging of the wing and arthritis. The long-term plan for this non-releasable bird, after several months of recuperation, is placement at an education facility. Presently, the eagle is being given anti-inflammatories and pain medications, and its wing is supported in a Figure-8 bandage.
He's a beauty, too. Can you believe the number of "patients" they've had this year? I wonder how many species they have dealt with, and how successful their attempts have been?
Sunday, October 26 Lun Lun has spent much more time sleeping overnight for the past few nights. Over the past few weeks, she has usually gotten up several times per night to snack. However, this week, sometime after midnight she has bedded down and slept for the rest of the night. She starts out sleeping with the cub, but after about 20-30 minutes, she gets up to sleep away from the cub. As the cub gets older, Lun Lun continues to lengthen the amount of time she spends away from him. It is now typical for her to leave the cub alone for 2-3 hours at a time.
The cub's latest weight is 2,434 grams (~ 5.4 pounds).
Tomorrow is the start of our last and hopefully, busiest week. Sales have slowed down considerably. Cars were pulling into the driveway this morning as we were leaving for church. Hope they all come back tomorrow!
I got that strange message on the Atlanta cam...it's in English but w/ a British accent..."Did you know that you are attempting to access a forbidden site? Contact your service provider for a new link" or something close to that...and then it stops connecting. Hmmmm....
Good Monday Morning...Eagle Buds... Sometimes "Good" and "Monday" cannot always be used in the same sentence I realize...I hope it is good for everyone.
I hear possible snow showers in the Potomac Highlands today and overnight HO NORMA! THAT MEANS YOU ! AND CAROL ! Get your sleds out !
CANDY Saw your comment Sunday about Hubby working 20 years as a Telecommunicator in Dare Co...I just passed my 20 year mark in April...Agree - the shift work can eat you alive ! And there are crooks on more corners than ever before, these days...
Have a good day with the kids today...hope they are full of fun stories about their week-ends....

The 3 falcon chicks are quite visible recently at the Alcoa nest in Australia.

My weekend was good. Today is very windy and cool. Luckily it will start to warm up on Tuesday, back to the 60, then for the rest of the week.
JIM---Do you suppose they are migrating?---
HI DEB!!---Our weather is just the opposite----We are at 66° now & forecasting COLDER WEATHER tomorrow!!!----We had a 'dreary--rainy' one yesterday!!!
It is 43 here, Norma, but windchill is 32. Very strong winds today, We have high wind warnings out.
DEB!!---Wind always makes it sound & feel MUCH COLDER!!!!---Great you had a nice weekend!!----

JIM!---I asked LISA about that just last week!!----I had seen them gathering here---She said they certainly do migrate!---
The Hummingbird is very active today, making many trips, adding to the nest, sitting down in it and rotating.........
There's a white mass in the bottom of the nest. Do you think it is an egg, or do you think it is building material??

Jim
It is hard to see, Jim. I do see what you are talking about, but can't tell what it is.
Eagle is Back at BWO...and it's a beautiful sunny afternoon at Pix PA.
THIS bird is going to roost, have to work at midnight and couldn't sleep much overnight...so I am getting veerrrrry sleepy!
Have a Good Evening, Eagle Buds.

One lone squirrel in Pa woods picking up leftovers.
Now looks like two blue jays coming in for treats
Hey JIM. I don't think that the parent bird would still be off the nest if there were an egg in it?
Mr. Eagle is still sitting tall at BWO. Must be waiting for dinner to e flown in by his wonderful wife. :)
I hope you are having a good sleep by now Magpie. My husband worked as a telecommunicator at 911 in Dare Co. down here for 20 years before he retired. It is a grewling job with all the changing of shifts.
Dinner calls. Still no fish for Mr. eagle and the squirrel is still digging in in Pa.. Later gators.
Heron at BWO
Heron gone, eagle back at BWO
LOL, NOW HE'S GONE!
I just read Steve's story of the Michigan Eagles. I wish them luck, but if the female is anything like our Belle, she will never be satisfied. LOL
Like Jo, I would like to hear a follow up on their progress.
We took Dustin home this afternoon and found gas in Winchester at $2.39 a gallon. Somehow, I doubt it will get much lower than that.
He is now at the Wildlife Center of Virginia where Buddy is housed.

Great show on PBS Nature right now about the white wolf and gyrfalcon in the Arctic
How amazing, Paula! Right here in out own backyard...and just before you all were there!
Taping that show now!
Yes, Redskins WON, but it was a little ugly in first half---missed opportunities.
OH, sad eagle story, Paula. But at least he will be well cared for and painfree soon.
Few days ago, I saw on TV that a variety of the godwit, a shorebird, flies over 7000 miles nonstop from Alaska to New Zealand for migration!!
He's a beauty, too. Can you believe the number of "patients" they've had this year? I wonder how many species they have dealt with, and how successful their attempts have been?
I had a guyfriend a while back whose daughter worked there as a vet tech...about 15 yrs. ago. Don't think they were 2000+ busy back then!
Isn't nature amzaing, Loretta???
Nature - I read that too. I think that's the longest migration they ever tracked for a bird.
