Monday, October 20 Yesterday, as has become the norm in the giant panda domain, the cub was weighed. Having gained 45 grams since Saturday, he weighed in at 2.137 kilograms.
This world of the giant panda is an odd place for one who is more familiar with primates. Discordant building temperatures: the balmy mid-to-upper 70s where Lun Lun and the cub are housed and the noticeably colder portions of the building where Yang Yang and Mei Lan reside. Lighting takes on the contrasting black-and-white pelage of the bears it houses – dark in some areas and light in others.
Gathering bamboo for Lun Lun, my eyes and my body’s thermostats adjust slowly to the lack of illumination and the changes in temperature as I attempt to tiptoe past whichever sleeping bear is along my path. I wander back to the bamboo cooler. If my eyes are especially sluggish, I can’t determine if it is Yang Yang or Mei Lan who lies watching my shadowy figure pass through – at first, empty handed; then, carrying a hefty bundle of bamboo, none of which is ever shared with them. Yet, they seem accepting of these nocturnal activities and my lack of generosity, which is quite fortunate for me! Debbie Forde Curatorial Assistant

Norma, yes, Jack is a handsome man and Lolly is a lovely woman. We enjoyed their visit so much. They stopped in at the Eagle Express and had an Eagle Talon before they left. I was so glad we were able to share our little tradition of partaking of the Eagle Express's official "Drink du Jour".

Well, I better get started soon, NORMA if I want to be married for 34 years like Frank and Chrissy! I would be 91 years old celebrating that anniversary! HO, AND DOUBLE HO !!
What a great turnout this weekend. Great to see everyone. Loved all the pictures. So glad there was a Sunday visit for those that returned.
I didn't really take very many pictures since I got there so late. Next time somebody kick me and tell me to take some photos of people instead of just birds. Here are a few from Saturday:
You NEVER have to apologize to this group for anything! Your photos are always awesome, and you must see that Paula gets some of those nest pictures for the Calendar ! It was such an absolute treat to be in the presence of your company Saturday ! Thank you so much for your support and encouragement....and I love my DOUBLE EAGLE PHOTO! ...I am still pinching myself to see if this really happened !
Good COLD morning, fowl friends. 29 degrees here at 8, now up too 44. Think it's time to fire up the ol' woodstove...brrr. Hoping for a rapid warm up shortly so I can go out and start blowing leaves. Great pics, Bob! Were they "live" or from the displays?? Norma, so glad you got to hook up w/ the train group...betch you all had a ball!
Happy Monday Everyone!!! What a weekend!! Bob, your pics are great, as usual!
Been outside helping hubby,Frank, put newly chromed bumper (I paid for that one as B'Day present) on one of his old cars. He's good at cars, but not photography! He took the group shot w/waiter in it!I'll have to tell him it made front page!LOL Will try to figure out how to get blog pics to E_M album.
Howdy Hey, N-Nut - your husband was very enjoyable to talk to...we had a nice talk about his cars...
*** I asked BOB some questions about his photography. He said Mrs. Bob likes to get out and GO - and one week-end, one of those GO trips was to Blackwater Refuge...well, seems we can see how the story goes... regarding photography at Blackwater anyway. We have a lot to thank Mrs. Bob for !
I have returned from the eye DR and vision is blurred so I won't be saying much until I can read the comments. I think I see that Bob was here - that means pics! I will check out everyone's blogs and the Momster Album. Then I will need to rest my eyes.
Okay, MEMA jo ,you are granted an afternoon pass....maybe after your eyeballs have rested, as evening approaches, there will be some treats in the nest.....
JIM Click on Wanda's avatar and go to Wanda's Wishes... She has named a good many of her pics.
Bob I remember seeing the photos from your time on the skipjack... I will read Sarah's blog this evening. Thanks for the shots of the Talons - I didn't get to see them this year and I do see that Momma Owl returned.
Bob Thank for sharing this commentary: interesting, educational, provocative....I was fascinated by the filtering ability of the oysters, and how all that has changed. I hope the Report Card will some day show an A+ rather than a C-.
So Good to See you, thanks again for posting the link to this report. Our thanks to Sarah.
Mrs. Bob is quite the journalist. I wonder if she has studied journalism. Mrs. Bob, I have never eaten a raw oyster and now I know for sure that I NEVER will!
Whoops...misunderstood...no shuttle take-off today...it was moved from the launch pad following a scrubbed flight on 10 Oct...don't know how I flubbed that! Guess listening w/ one ear only!
What time did they actually move it, Mits? When I tuned in shortly before three, they weren't showing the launch pad at all...back to regulaar programming..so I missed it entirely!
Hi T-Bird...I have a mess in my house! One piece of furniture in and I have a lot to go through to make room, a lot of Junk! and a few valuables...Tedious, long overdue... so I hop back to the computer often. How was YOUR DAY ?
Please work your magic over the nest....no sightings today yet... xo
My old-fashioned pictures may never make it to the album... Imagine, having to take film somewhere to get it developed...time to become a modern woman I suppose...
Magpie-you say that as if taking pics to get them developed is a bad thing. I predict more and more people will start doing that again because not enough pics are printed with digital. I know I like albums.
Helen, I did sign up for that! TY. Leaves, round 1, done! Much easier to do before they get wet (and compacted in driveway) but it sure is dusty w/ no rain for so long..cough, cough. Only took a total of about 2 hrs. This process, of course, will continue til probably close to Thanksgiving..the joy of living in the woods! Also laid the woodstove fire for tonight...first of the season is always special because I love the smell.....but it sure makes for a long winter feeding that bugger!
I have mounds of photos T-Bird, sometimes I get a good album going, give duplicates away like crazy...but...it is even getting hard to find film sometimes...
I love photos! Have had such a good time with them over the years.
Well, there was a heron at BWO, then there was an Eagle, and soon as I posted, it was gone too.... but you're right, I may well have Lost it, if I ever Had It...
I was doing okay with picture CD but then Kodak program on computer went belly-up and I just need to commit myself to get it built back in right...have already tried numerous times, says it can't find something or other...
You may still be able to open them w/ another program, Margy!! I'm sure Paula or Red would be able to tell you how to try! Hi ya' Thelma! We sure missed you, girl!
WOW! Just saw Bob's link to Sarah's story on the Stanley Norman!! I've been out on it with Park Staff many years ago, and another vessel since then. I won't eat raw oysters either, but our Dir. at the time made sure to bring cocktail sauce! He loves them & has steamed them old-fshioned way over charcoal grill--wrap them in wet burlap. CBF has an office near Park & they camp at our place all summer w/high school students and take them on educational canoing programs.
Hello:)- in case you are an early bird- ORIONID METEOR WATCH: If you wake up before sunrise on Tuesday, Oct. 21st, set aside 15 minutes or so to watch the sky around Orion. You might see some meteors. The annual Orionid meteor shower, caused by dusty debris from Halley's Comet, is peaking today and tomorrow. Little was expected of this year's display because a bright Moon is hanging in the pre-dawn sky, causing an interfering glare. Surprisingly, however, sky watchers on Oct. 20th witnessed 15 or more Orionids per hour, many of them brighter than first magnitude stars. If this stronger-than-expected display spills into Tuesday, you might be glad to wake up early. Check http://spaceweather.com for updates and a sky map.
It's been a day of pool exercising and letting the heated water bend the body. Then running in and out of stores. Next was off to mail Birthday gifts to out of towners.
Busy Busy
Great to see you on Norma...Heard you had a wonderful time. Even better hearing it from you lady.
Pictures are awesome!! Yours too Bob...you got Big Momma with a snack. Each time she flew the line they gave her a piece. She really "puffed up her feathers around the dog" that was there.
Put my pics in Yahoo Eaglet album too. Very easy--glad I kept the list of the ones I posted on blog, as you have to browse in your 'puter to find them & I only edited about 1/2 I took. Dr. Phil had show about people addicted to 'puter games & are online all day & evening--quit jobs,do almost nothing else,-wives work & marriages crumbling. Uh Ohh! I'm not that bad yet, but I'm gonna get on to watch nest after 6PM!!! T-Bird, you're the lucky charm! Plz come on!
Due East MITS - starts to rise close to midnight....You're right about the moon, MEGAN...there could be one more problem, coudy skies.. last night was incredibly clear, I should have been paying attention to my Astronomy magazine AND the sky. *thanks for the sky alert Floralgirl *
Loretta I just finished seeing the new pics put in the album Paula started. I seen Momma Owl where you captured her. Great pics Loretta and everyone!!!
Friday night Oct 17th when I drove the back roads home. The moon was out lighting the fields. So I got to see a lot and I do mean a lot of deer.
On Sat night Oct 18th when Ed and me was driving home. Again the back roads. We got to see a red fox fully grown eating from the roadway "roadkill". He/she was beautiful. Right away I thought of Bob Quinn...and his pics of several red fox.
ISS comes back out in the morning too...7:05 or so AM - SSW 29-degrees in Berkeley County, I'll try to repost the Blue Link so you can find it for your region Oct 21, 23, 24, 25 and 26..all in the mornings...
Margy, we did see the deer Saturday after leaving the Clarion. You saw a doe...we saw the rest of her family. There were 5 or 6 standing on the left of the road as we pulled out of the parking lot. They must come there often because they were not skittish at all. Beautiful animals (but not in my garden or flowere).
As long as the deer stay off the road they should be pretty protected back there by the Clarion, Wanda...it was nice.
Little bird clock just chimed 7 - it is the Robin, first I thought it was a Robin singing at Pelican Harbor....might be time for a Panda Nap like Luney is doing...! would that be LunLun playing with the bamboo, then?
On Friday I was following a deer in the road. It just slowly walked in the middle of the road. I followed it until the deer reached a 2nd deer also in middle of road.
I stopped and enjoyed watching them put noses together. Awwww so neat ( : Then they just started walking again in the roadway. I just followed slowly. Was on a straight stretch so I wasn't worried about someone coming around a turn an hitting them. Finally they moved off into a field.
Perfectly beautiful and clear night, Venus shining brightly in the West/Southwest sky....the Planet of Love...sigh.... and Jupiter pretty much straight South...Wow!
Frequency: This shower produces a peak rate of 20 yellow and green meteors per hour, which are fast moving at 41.6 miles per second and are known to produce fireballs. Parent Comet: 1P/Halley some additional info on the meteror shower, Margy and Megan.
Howdy Indiana Dave, Paula and Dana, and all the other Evening People... I hope we all can see the same things in the sky tonight..
MITS - If there was a link on your post about the Orionids, I couldn't get it to open up...maybe 'cause I am too hungry, will check back in a little bit.
My son just called and he was able to be at the T J High School in Frederick this evening when the S'town Ram Band performed! They announced Mason Ellsworth's name before playing his special song & he said they were fabulous sounding!
Good Night to everyone who still has their eyes open...Appreciate Jo's 9 pm prayer reminder, spent the next two hours watching a PBS show on LBJ - "to be continued."
Little bit of a tough snag for the Ellsworths, hope they can get it all squared away quickly and get Mason back to Bryn Mawr.
Taking several handfuls of prayers to the pillows with me...
Thanks for all the friendship today, Eagle Buds. xo
Hope you made some money, Paula! The calendar sounds like a great idea!! And I bet the eagle bobbleheads would sell well if they were available! Goodnight all. Glad you still have some time for yourself before you go back to work, Margy. Talk to all tomorrow. Prayers for all being said.
I finally got a look at some pics of the Open House on Wanda's (thanks, whoever suggested it. I can't find the comment again.) and on Paula's too. Everybody looks happy to be together with the others from the group. I'm glad everyone had a great time ... I even looked happy to be there.
Good morning everyone. Haven't had time to look at yesterday's blog, will do that later. Hope everyone is well this morning. I think it is supposed to be a beautiful day!!

Yesterday, as has become the norm in the giant panda domain, the cub was weighed.

Surprisingly, however, sky watchers on Oct. 20th witnessed 15 or more Orionids per hour, many of them brighter than first magnitude stars. If this stronger-than-expected display spills into Tuesday, you might be glad to wake up early. Check http://spaceweather.com for updates and a sky map.
ahhh, can I have a wakeup call, Megan:)
Hi ( : Everyone
It's been a day of pool exercising and letting the heated water bend the body. Then running in and out of stores. Next was off
to mail Birthday gifts to out of towners.
Margy and Megan, you will have to point me in the direction of Orion:)
3 deer at salt lick
Dana, now I know that the Big Momma people have been mentioning is the great horned owl! I posted a pic of her flying and "puffed up"!!
good job, Lotetta, and good pics
Due East MITS - starts to rise close to midnight....You're right about the moon, MEGAN...there could be one more problem, coudy skies.. last night was incredibly clear, I should have been paying attention to my Astronomy magazine AND the sky.
*thanks for the sky alert Floralgirl *
Well, yes you can have a wake up call, but I'm not sure if you'd forgive me for it...Orion is in the south sky before sunrise.
Loretta I just finished seeing the new pics put in the album Paula started. I seen Momma Owl where you captured her. Great pics Loretta and everyone!!!
lol...ok, now I'm really confused...east or south:), Ladies:), I think I will sleep in:)
BWO EAGLE
Friday night Oct 17th when I drove the back roads home. The moon was out lighting the fields. So I got to see a lot and I do mean a lot of deer.
On Sat night Oct 18th when Ed and me was driving home. Again the back roads. We got to see a red fox fully grown eating from the roadway "roadkill". He/she was beautiful. Right away I thought of Bob Quinn...and his pics of several red fox.
Im sorry - it rises due EAST and them moves into the South West sky as the night proceeds...
OKIE-DOKIE....got in Margy:)
Nice additions to the Open House Album Loretta and Megan....slideshow is a nice feature...Thanks!
ISS comes back out in the morning too...7:05 or so AM - SSW 29-degrees in Berkeley County,

Little black bird at Two Harbors...
still waiting for our birds
Don't strain your eyes, it's gone, at Two Harbors, looked like a Crow, sort of...
I think Deb took our Lib & Belle home with her. She is the Bird Whisperer.
too bad she is not the spidey whisperer
** Eagle Alert Our Nest **
EAGLE ALERT
BOTH
Two Eagle Alert that is... !!
Eagle Alert!!
Down to a One Eagle Alert....
GONE
Man oh Man that was Quick !
I got two captures...anyone else ?
Poof!!
I only got 2 also...
You know, to make that kind of quick drop-in, and exit... you'd almost think the Pair knew we were on the edge of our seats!
probably sitting up on the limb for 2 hours:)
I think you are probably right, MITS.
Whew, took my breath away !
I went into my email and missed the visit "Live", but thanks Helen, for the image. At least we know Deb didn't take them. SORRY DEB!
Nice visit short but sweet!
As long as the deer stay off the road they should be pretty protected back there by the Clarion, Wanda...it was nice.
Little bird clock just chimed 7 - it is the Robin, first I thought it was a Robin singing at Pelican Harbor....might be time for a Panda Nap like Luney is doing...!
would that be LunLun playing with the bamboo, then?
could be one of the other 2 pandas there, Margy
now it is back on Luney
On Friday I was following a deer in the road. It just slowly walked in the middle of the road. I followed it until the deer reached a 2nd deer also in middle of road.
I stopped and enjoyed watching them
put noses together.
If the skies are like this in the morning it will be well worth it to pull on the long johns and coveralls and head out to see some Meteors!
yes, it would, Margy:)
Margy just went outside to check it out. Both are shining very brightly....outstanding!

Have a great 'rest of the week.'
