Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

We can confirm a second giant panda cub was born at 10:07 pm. The panda team retrieved one of the cubs per "twin hand rearing" protocol and has placed it in an incubator. It appears to be in good health

Good morning and this is wonderful news to greet me as I awaken - GOD IS GOOD

Also notice that the cams are down - Hope that is good news concerning maybe the work
on the new cam equipment

BBL - Going to be watching the Pandas - It is also Bao Bao's birthday - 2 years old

Good morning to all.

Thank you Jo for the information on the second cub. I can get a picture of Mei but the cub she has is hidden. I did not know about the second. How exciting. Yes, the nest cam is still down. Have fun with Elliot TODAY. Beautiful weather for a beautiful boy.

Shirley, glad you and all are having fun at Riva House. Enjoy the day.

Sandi, please also enjoy the tennis and the day.

Wishing Kay a wonderful day with her family.

Have a great day each and every one of you.

Good afternoon! Home from church, the went out and hand watered some areas. Now cooling off, it is 96!

Need to do a little cleaning. Sister, Shaon and hubby Dan will be here tomorrow. They are in their RV and just passing through on way to
Minn and the UP of Mich. then on Thurs Jack's sister and hubby stop by for a couple of days. They, too, are in their RV and on way home to Atlanta. They have been gone for 5 weeks. They traveled across the northern states, went to Canada, then To Oregon and down the coast. Now traveling home the southern route. So it is Sister week here!😄

So excited about the Cubs. Tried to get on and view but was unable to do so!

Time to get busy. I have cooled off now. Time to mop and dust!

Lolly said...

Have not purchased and downloaded the Natl Zoo App. Getting a great picture!

Dinner is over. Scullery is back in order.

Panda cams are overloaded. Local news > both cubs and Mei doing just fine.

Headed across the hall to the recliner and a mystery.

Hope everyone had a wonderful day.

Sandperson is at the zoo. Restful sleep for all.

Good evening,

I am home and resting comfortably in my own bed. The trip was excellent. Weather was beautiful.

We saw and heard many ospreys. Also saw a bald eagle and a variety of other birds. Got pictures of several, but not the eagle. I went back looking for it when I had my camera, but it was gone.

stronghunter said...

I was delighted to hear about the twin pandas and shared the news with everyone at the Rivah House.

good evening to all. I wish I could understand and slow down the worm hole that weekends enter to speed them up soooo fast. I guess working yesterday didn't help that, huh? I am however, off tomorrow and I am glad.

yesterday was a tough day @ work. I did a lot of deep tissue work and stretching of clients, all needed. and I was wiped out tired when I got off of work. came home, had a snack and snoozed on the sofa for a bit.

we went out to the dinner theatre last night. Michael and Niki joined us. it was phenomenal! Food was excellent (soup (chicken noodle/beef veggie), salad with all sorts of goodies, 3 kinds of veggies, sides such as pastas and mashed taters, fish, lasange and or/roast beef (medium or rare). then apple strudel for dessert. we could (and did) purchase some cheese cake and it was excellent. (yeah, way over ate).

then the show. ALL SHOOK UP. it was a 2 hour show....based on the music of elvis presely. it was a cute skit/play, very well done. it was a light hearted little musical and we were all laughing and enjoyed our evening very much.

today was sleep day. I must have drank way too much tea and water last night cuz I was up and down several times last night. of course, if I get up, beano and dax must go out as well. uh hem. anyway.

tom and I slept late. then we sat down, drank coffee and watched a couple of movies we started. lazy day!

after brunch we did mow the yard together. I cleaned the pool and such.

unfortunately, we spent money. :( the downstairs a/c compressor went out. it was only 30+ years old. sooo, a/c co is coming out tomorrow to replace it we have hot weather heading this way later in the week.

Chelsea and crew came over this afternoon to chill and grill. mia had soccer again today and I knew she didn't want to cook. so she offered to bring Olivia home and we could grill and the kids could swim. I had no problems with cooking up some burgers and hot dogs. works for me. we have to eat anyway, whats a few more on the grill.

after we ate, they all swam.

I've been pretty much holding the sofa down. I did have to water my plants outside. but since dinner, the sofa is my friend.

I hope everyone has had a great weekend. busy day tomorrow, allergy shot, need to go see the chiropractor, a/c company coming out. yee haw.

good night everyone . pleasant sleep and dreams!

Hi, Everyone,

Dropping by with an update on Ken. The cellulitis had caused a red area on his chest, extending from the pacemaker site down to the nipple of his left breast. They put him on a second antibiotic yesterday, and it seems to be working, because the redness is going away. His left hand still has that spot of cellulitis on it, and it hasn't changed except to get more sensitive. The redness on his chest was what really concerned me, though, and I'm relieved that it's looking better. We should hear from the dermatologist tomorrow or maybe Tuesday, and can't wait to hear their input. Ken's on doxycycline and amoxicillin, so I imagine they will take care of this. Thank God he feels fine, and there is no swelling or discharge from the surgery site. Hopefully we will hear from the cardiologist tomorrow, too.

Sandi, I'm absolutely outraged that your doctor continued treating you when he wasn't supposed to do so! I would have thought that someone would be monitoring what he's doing! Golly, what a mess for you to have to deal with! Prayers, for sure!

Wow, TWO little panda cubs!! That's amazing! Fantastic news!

Shirley, glad you had such a wonderful trip! Beautiful weather, and all those osprey, eagle, and bird sightings! I'm jealous!

Well, we're about to have another week of hot weather! It was 90 today, with 74% humidity. Tomorrow & Tuesday, 91; Wednesday, 95; Thursday, 97; Friday, 99; and so on. Not supposed to be back in the 80s until a week from this Tuesday, 88.
All I can say is YUCK.

Lolly, looks like you are in for more heat, too. Let's do a rain dance! Sounds like you're going to have fun this week--sister week! Enjoy!

Shirley, how are the kittens getting along? Hope they are friendly with each other now.

Well, it's getting kind of late, and my eyes are complaining about this computer. Guess I'd better say goodnight. Will try to spend more time here tomorrow. Have SED, everyone. God bless! I ♥ us!!

Good morning!!

Five pandas at the National Zoo. That is great!

Having my coffee and watching CNN . . . first story I saw was about the pandas.

Now a story about the three Americans who took down that terrorist on the train in France. I am hoping there are no more incidents in France. Oh my goodness.

Kitties are doing just fine. They are happy playmates.

stronghunter said...

Tried to load some pictures from my trip to the Rivah House last night, but was interrupted by Allie Cat. She's now settling down at the foot of my bed. Maybe I will get a break.

Hoping for more reasonable weather for all of you folks in California and Texas. With September waiting in the wings, it cannot be too much longer. At least we can hope for some relief.

Judie said...

Good morning to everyone.

Pandas still doing well. Osprey chicks have fledged and begun migration.

Shirley, glad you had a lovely time and especially happy Smokey and Allie have become playmates.

Sandi, enjoy the morning of tennis and a lazy day. Do you have any preparation before school begins? Can you just show up and follow teacher instructions?

Andy, glad Kubby seems to be improving and anxious to have you tell us that all is completely healed and he is aokay.

Hope Jo had a an Excellent Elliot day yesterday. I think today is a doctor day. Maybe she'll check in later.

Maybe Kay will check in later. Today is the final day of family visitors. i'm sure she has had a terrific weekend.

Wishing everyone the best day possible.

Posted a few pictures from the weekend. Added some comments, but I seem to have missed some pics with the comments, but I think you can figure things out.

Good morning! Prayers for Ken, Andy! Glad the redness is going away!

Sister week starts today. Expecting them late this afternoon. Great RV park is very close. We will go pick them up so they will not have to unhitch their car.

Got lazy yesterday, so still need to dust today.

Jack has been armadillo hunting the last three nights but no luck. Neighbor is now doing the same. Told them not to shoot each other! Lol

Newest Cub Report concerning last night: The panda team had a challenging night. When they tried to swap the cubs at 11p.m., Mei Xiang would not set down the cub she had in her possession. Consequently, the panda team cared for the smaller cub throughout the night until 7:05 a.m. when they successfully swapped the cubs.
The team is exceptional!

I had seen some photos of BaoBao and her birthday cake - hoping for a video to share on here.

BIRTHDAY: My granddaughter today is celebrating her 32nd birthday.

Mema Jo said...

Paula so sorry you and Larry are just now getting the info on renting house in Biloxi.
I wish Larry luck in finding a condo to rent. That means you will have the house in which to live during our winter season. Things usually happen for a good reason.

Sandi said...

Hi all.

Paula, what crummy news about the house in Biloxi - it sure would have been helpful to know the zoning regs before you bought it, wouldn't it? Still, like Jo said, it's there for you and Larry to enjoy this winter - all the more reason not to be a working girl!

Judie, i just have to show up next Tuesday and then i will find out which special ed. Teacher I'm working with. I don't have a classroom to set up or IEPs to start reading or student schedules to start learning or parents to email to introduce myself. The teacher days will actually be pretty boring for me b/c there isn't much I have to do except be there. Boring sounds very good to me after 31 years of feeling mega-stressed to be ready for the students!

stronghunter said...

Oh, yes, sometimes boring is good, Sandi. I always said that when I was on cafeteria duty.

stronghunter said...

Would be nice to think that pesky armadillo went elsewhere, Lolly.

Got my euros today. Will pack them away in a safe place until I am ready to use them. So glad I ordered them before the Stock Market went crazy.

stronghunter said...

Hope you and Larry get things straightened out on the house issues, Paula. Is it standing empty now, or have you gotten a longer-term rental?

Good Afternoon Eagle Buds!!!

JUDIE, you are soooo right! It was a terrific weekend! Such good times, many laughs, great meals..... Eileen was the last to leave here at about 1:30pm. Julie joined the two of us for lunch after taking Beth and Lauren to the airport and we enjoyed rehashing the glorious girls weekend. I did very little Penny walking for several days with such avid and adoring fans around to shower her with TLC. Seth moved back to the dorm yesterday---likes his new roommate at first glance---connected with friends for dinner last night and breakfast today---his Junior year seems to be off to a terrific start.

Have a lot to catch up on here, but for starters....

SANDI, so sorry your dermatologist turned out to be a rule violator. Yes, boring will be refreshing!

JO and JUDIE, so pleased with Panda news! I haven't read or heard news for two days, so have myself a lot of catching up to do!

Moving on now to see what the rest of the world is up to....

Prayers for all in need and for our dear Sycamore Palace family, where ever they may soar!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

PAULA, good news on Larry's health, bad news on the Biloxi rental situation. Fingers crossed on both counts.

SHIRLEY, glad you had a good trip and have your Euro's safely tucked away.

ANDY, sorry to hear Ken is having more woes, hope those meds provide quick relief.

paula eagleholic said...

We are looking to get short term 30 day renters but no luck so far. We got some Rental $$ before we got caught :-) and yup house will be ready for us this winter :-)

The valley had a heavy downpour of rain for about an hour this afternoon. The humidity is still horrible. We did go out to UNO's for pizza and are home now.

No appointments today - waiting for phone call for my radiation 3 day schedule.

Kay & Shirley - good reports on your company and your travels.

Lolly - tell Jack NOT to get caught in the crossfire!

First day of school here in Frederick County MD - Alexis was all aglow when she left this morning and when she got home she was just gleaming ! I wish all children had the quest for knowledge like Alexis does. FB has her pictures.

Dinner, Judie-made pizza, is over and the scullery is in order.

Kay and Shirley, so happy you both had a wonderful weekend. Wishing Seth a terrific semester and a good relationship with his roommate.

Jo, it must be just so wonderful that Alexis is eager for knowledge. Encouragement is all that's needed. Um, I'm thinking the downpour you had in the valley was the one you sent to N. Va. this evening. Thank you so much.

Shirley, keep a close watch on those Euros. lol

Paula, good luck with the housing issues. Hope all is resolved quickly.

Okay, now to watch the kids ooking championship.

Sandperson is still at the panda house keeping watch over the babies.

Restful sleep for all.

I have posted a bunch of pictures from our weekend. Just getting started. I took quite a few pictures and some videos.

stronghunter said...

Lovely pictures of Alexis on FB, Jo. It is hard to believe she is in 5h grade. Wow.

I heard from Rus that there is rain in Northern Virginia. It seems that there has been a whole heap of drama on the bus he took home: Woman in wheelchair got on the wrong bus. Wheelchair lift got stuck when the driver tried to let her off and she got stuck in the rain which made her most unhappy. Then someone else got on the wrong bus and had to be let off. I hope Rus gets home soon.

good evening to all.

Yanno, jmho, I think it would be very difficult to simply take directions on a job that I’ve been doing for years …. Thinking of Sandi….
PAULA: I echo everyone else; crummy news! :P
Hoping KEN is doing better……..

STRONGHUNTER: has peace in kittyland! Yeah!
I had a difficult time sleeping last night; the body was tired, but the mind kept on rolling.
Therefore, this morning I sure didn’t want to get out of bed.
Normally Mondays are no rush, but the a/c guys were supposed to be here between noon and 2. So Olivia and I ran a couple of errands and were home by 11:30 A/C guys showed up @ 4:45.
I cleaned the inside of the house as I neglected it over the weekend. I was done by 2 and happily went outside to work in the yard.

The a/c folks are almost done now. Downstairs will have air again!
Back to work tomorrow!
Good night all!

Great evening with Sharon and Dan. They will be in Kansas tomorrow night. Expect Jack's sister, Jane, Thursday. Looks like Michael and Zach will be here Friday night and Saturday morning. Laurel and boys will be here Sat afternoon. Joey cannot come as he has two visitors from Norway coming!

We have our reservations in Colorado! We will be leaving on the 19th. Wahoo! Could not get reservations in the Natl park, so we are I a RV park in Estes Park on the river. So looking forward to it!

Ready for the pillows! Night! SED!

Good morning eagle buds

Sandi said...

Goodorming my eagle friends. Gray morning here with rain possible thru the early part of the day, then cooler dryer air behind it so the rest of the week should be great. We can use the rain - I'm tired of watering my plants & flowers.

CarolAnne, I hope and pray things are going well for your mom.

Andy, I hope Ken's cellulitis continues to improve.

Lolly, enjoy your family time this week.

Jo, loved the first day of school pic of Alexis - Facebook was flooded yesterday with everyone's kids starting back to school with new clothes, new backpacks, and big smiles!

Janet, once the students arrive on 9/8, no one will be telling me how to do a job that I have been doing for years. The special ed. teacher will simply tell me what class to go into and which kids are the special ed kids, and then trust that I know what to do with them in the classroom. But let me explain next week with an analogy so you'll understand why being bored during returning teacher week is a very good thing.

Imagine you decide to throw a dinner party for 100 people. You have your entire house & yard to get ready, food to prepare, all the things necessary for a successful party. You decide that you need more cooking utensils and go to a local dept store to buy them. But the manufacturer of the pots and pans REQUIRES you to sit through a 3-hour presentation on how to use them correctly, as insulting as that seems. While you're sitting there, all you can think about is the million and one things you need to do at home, but you're stuck in this stupid presentation. Your stress level goes up as the minutes drag on.

The next day, you head to the grocery store to buy food for the party. But before you can check out, the grocery store REQUIRES you to sit through a 3-hour presentation on food safety. You sit there wishing you could cancel the party, but the invitations have already been sent and the people will be showing up at the designated time whether your house and the food are ready or not. You are stressed beyond belief!!! That's what returning teacher week is like for a TEACHER!

Now, imagine you plan the same dinner party, but someone else is coming in to clean your house, set up all the tables & decorations, and prepare all the food. You still need more pots and pans so you still go to the dept store to buy them and still have to sit through the 3-hour presentation. But although it may be boring, you don't have anything else that needs to be done at home, so you can just sit there and doodle, or daydream, or play on your phone. That's what returning teacher week is like for a PARA! After 31 years of scenario A, I am happy to sit through 3 days of scenario B next week! :)

Have agreat day all.

Good Morning!

Wanted to get here last night, but ended up watching TV through my eyelids! Ken heard from the dermatologist yesterday, who prescribed an antibiotic cream to put on his hand 2x/day for 2 weeks. Started using it yesterday, and it looks slightly improved this morning. The redness on his chest is still receding and getting fainter. He goes back to the cardiology center to see the nurse who will be checking his pacemaker regularly. He may also get to see the cardiologist while we're there. I'm really glad that he feels perfectly fine. Otherwise I would be rather worried about him! Thanks to all of you for your concern, prayers, and well-wishes!

Not sure what our plans are for today yet. Supposed to get to 90 or 91, with 90% humidity! May just hang around the house and nap a lot, like Emma does. We will go and walk the mall early this morning, at about 7 am. It's usually pretty cool there, even though the mall doesn't open until 10 am today. They keep one entrance open for mall walkers starting at 7.

Got news from Texas: Our youngest granddaughter, Courtney, started her Senior year yesterday, and Sierra, our great-granddaughter, started the 4th grade!

Paula, sorry to hear that you will have to rent out the house for a month at a time. Well, it's good the place will be there for you to enjoy this winter!

Shirley, thrilled to hear that peace reigns at your roost! Will have to check out your pictures today!

Lolly, hope the armadillo(s) decide to flee from your property! Glad you're enjoying "sister week", and have your reservations for Colorado.

Janet, glad your a/c got fixed!

Judy, sorry Jordyn was disappointed with school. I'm sure they will be giving homework assignments very soon, and maybe that will help her to feel better about it. Does she like her teacher so far?

Kay, that's great that Seth's Junior year is off to such a good start!
Your weekend sure sounds like a good time was had by all!

Well, I need to hit the road running. Have to make myself reasonably presentable so I don't scare any small children while at the mall to walk. Also need to take a quick look at my e-mail before we leave home.

Hope everyone has as good a day as they possibly can. Will check back here later. I ♥ us!

Good morning.

Shirley, enjoyed the pictures on your blog. The area looks lovely. Rus's story reminded me of days of taking the train to and from the city. Yes, we had lots of rain. Need lots more.

Sandi, great analogy. Enjoyed being bored. lol

Andy, continued positive thoughts for Kubby. Hoping the cream helps and he gets a good report from cardiology.

Janet, glad the AC is repaired and you got some cleaning done. Sorry about loss of sleep. Sandperson is watching the panda cubs.

For everyone with children and/or grandchildren headed to school, may they enjoy and learn each and every day.

Wishing everyone the very best day possible.

stronghunter said...

Good morning,

Bowling meeting this morning.

Loved your analogy, Sandi. So true. So many times I would stay late or come in early to get ready for students. Much of the time we were "on the clock" was spent in meetings. They did start giving us recertification points for going to them. Once they mistakenly gave me a few points when I was actually at the dentist. I felt no guilt about keeping these points--especially since they had lost so many of my points a few years before.

stronghunter said...

Thanks for sending the Sanderson to watch over the pandas, Judie. I expect the panda caretakers could use some Sanderson help as well.
