Friday

Here's a note I got from Dr. Jim Siegel on my staff about the nest visitor yesterday.  Jim has studied sanderlings, scrub jays, great blue herons, brown creepers, hermit thrushes, and a few others pretty intimately,  including their territorial, reproductive and feeding behavior. Observing eagles is a hobby for him, so here are his thoughts:

"Birds are instinctual creatures.  If the male is bringing in fish without young in the nest (Feb 4) , he is provisioning the female - feeding her as if she cannot leave the eggs or young and making sure she is fit and healthy to reproduce.  The fish may have attracted the sub-adult (Feb 5)

I am not convinced the sub-adult is a fledgling from 3 years ago just hanging out and visiting its parents.  Fledglings of long-lived predatory birds have to disperse widely from home or  they will be constantly competing with their parents who may live for decades in the same place.  Every young born cannot stay home and wait for their parents to die; they may end up waiting for years.  They will compete with their parents (and the new nestlings) for food and space every year. And every year more young competitors are reared.  The gene line loses in that case.

Eagles don't live in family groups - none of the predatory birds do.  But jays and crows do and these birds try to live at the borders of their parents territory, hoping someone will either die or they find another unoccupied territory nearby that they already know well due to its proximity to their natal territory.  Longevity: 6-7 years for jays and up to 20 years for crows.  Most small songbirds only live 3-4 years at most.

If the sub-adult bird (I don't know perhaps 2-3 years old?) acts juvenile enough, the male or even the female may act as if the sub-adult is the bird they, in their tiny bird brains, are thinking (?) they have hatched out of the eggs that have not even been laid yet.  They may feed him or tolerate him as if he was their 2015 fledgling! This before those 2015 fledglings even exist.  Its hormonal not rational.

That is why you get chicken hens brooding kittens, and songbird feeding gaping goldfish mouths in a backyard pond. And lions that try to care for young antelope. Maternal and paternal Instinct takes over and strange things happen.

The other possibility is that subadult is trying to displace the adult male or female bird. It is not likely, but it is possible, that the sub-adult is in better physical condition than one of the adults, and although sub-adult in plumage, it is masculine or feminine enough in its genetic fitness to convince the rival bird and its opposite sex, that it is a potential viable territory holder and mate.

I am learning stuff from these birds all the time."

Good morning,

Thanks for the new thread and all of the interesting information, Steve. And thanks for the call-over, Jerry.

Having coffee. Fifteen degrees here this morning.

Delivered Hunter to school. He had to scrape the windshield this morning in his shorts and tee-shirt.

Something really strange in the nest this morning. Did the strange thing from yesterday grow? No eagles in the nest.

Good Red Friday Morning Eagle Buds!!!

Thank you for the new thread and for sharing Dr. Siegal and his expertise on eagle behavior. I like the term "subadult" and I appreciate the reminder that we must not ascribe human emotions and behaviors to these magnificent wild birds!

It's wonderful to see Belle and Shep enjoying a bit of sunshine in their windy aerie this morning!

ANDY, so relieved to know all's well and swell with you and Ken!

JO, I'm echoing your lovely birthday message to SANDRA--but what Sandra is celebrating today?

stronghunter said...

I am here, Jo. Wandered off to play some word games. Missed the eagles.

stronghunter said...

Hunter has early dismissal today. I will be picking him up at 11:45.

stronghunter said...

Oh, no, the eagles are still there. I refreshed the cam and now I see them.

stronghunter said...

Just sitting in the morning sunshine on this cold morning.

stronghunter said...

Windy up there in the Sycamore Palace.

Kay said...

That was supposed to be, Thank you STEVE for the new thread...

Congrats to JERRY---your feathery headdress is filling out nicely!

SUZAN and JO, glad you're staying in out of the cold! I don't have COPD, but do have asthma that kicks up on frigid days--have used my rescue inhaler a lot lately and should just get the nebulizer out for a good treatment.

My best to the rest of you who've shown up this morning and my prayers for all in need!!!

Kay: Sandra Osbourn
An original momster from 2006.
Lives in Shepherdstown at the corner house at the 4-sway stop.
Sandra is mainly on FB nowadays.
I can only describe her as a
very fine Lady.

NCSuzan said...

LOL. Jo, I know we are not supposed to be breathing cold air but frankly It is easier to breathe to me that warm, hot humid air. If it is really cold that's different!

Love the wind blowing in our eagles' "hair".

stronghunter said...

I remember seeing Sandra's house in Shepherdstown, Jo.

Happy birthday dear Sandra!

Mema Jo said...

Our couple really look like they are guarding their home - each looking in a different direction. My heart
is going to jump if that Juvie plops
down in the nest. Belle certainly isn't thinking of laying an egg on Sandra's b-day - although she has done that two times before. Perhaps then if not she will hit tomorrow which is Helen's b-day - and then if it doesn't happen the 8th is Jill's birthday. WHOA Come on Belle ♥

stronghunter said...

I just don't like the cold. I will go out to retrieve my grandson from school, and maybe I will put out some bird food in a bit. And, I have noticed that the bird bath needs attention, so I might attend to that.

I have enjoyed having the heater for the bird bath...when I looked out the window, I saw a little bird enjoying the water. It was sitting next to the heater. Maybe a bit of warmth there.

Mema Jo said...

Jerry - if you tune in at lunch =
Congratulations on yet another feather and another early morning nest report.

stronghunter said...

They do look as if they are on guard, Jo. But they look calm.

Mema Jo said...

Shirley - I shiver each time I look out and the bird bath has frozen.
What make is your heater - I know Suz Hall always used one.

stronghunter said...

HP. Looked like Belle went over and invited that one.

Mema Jo said...

WELL NOW That was some HP

stronghunter said...

I'll check, Jo. I had one last year, but I didn't really like it because it floated on top of the water. This one sits on the bottom and seems better. I was a bit hesitant to buy it because it was about $45.00, but then I decided I really wanted it. If a person shops around, they could probably do better.

stronghunter said...

I think Belle went over and said, "Hey there, Lover Boy."

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

That was some really intense HP right there.

Mema Jo said...

Thx for the information Shirley

What does Hunter have early
dismissal

NCSuzan said...

THAT looked like it took!

Mema Jo said...

Morning Sharon
I sure hope the egg comes soon
Did you witness yesterday's drama
with the juvie. I guess you have read Steve's remarks on the cover

Hope your hip is doing well!

stronghunter said...

When we lived in Columbus, I recall hearing that it is important to keep fresh water out for the birds when everything is frozen. But it's tough to do that when it gets really cold.

I don't think the squirrels can get to the water in the bird bath, though, and I do care about those rascals, too. Maybe if we have a long cold spell, I will move the bird bath next to the porch so the squirrels can have access.

You do have to plug it in to an outlet.

Mema Jo said...

Setting water out for squirrels it freezes in this weather in about a short 2 hours or less.

NCSuzan said...

I'm afraid to leave my laptop....something might happen and I don't want to miss it!

Mema Jo said...

It is very very suspenseful watching our eagles this morning.
With a turn of their heads you feel
anxiety thinking something is being heard or seen and is a threat to them.

Mema Jo said...

I agree Suzan - but I think I have some things to do today here in the house - like get dressed today ! lol

NCSuzan said...

Then again they may be just enjoying alone time before the kids arrive!

NCSuzan said...

Jo, me too!

grannyblt said...

I am watching while eating a late breakfast and compiling grocery list. It is still in the teens here and I am trying to talk myself into getting out. Haven't been to store in 2 weeks.
I thought I heard an eagle cry a few minutes ago. I think our family is guarding their space.

stronghunter said...

Very interesting article. Must say I have never seen a bird feed on of our pond fish. lol Would love to see that. When we walk up to the pond the fish come to the top begging with their mouths open.

Forgot to mention....spring is coming! My first daffodil opened yesterday! There is hope, so hang in there!

We are going to have a beautiful weekend with the highs in the 70's. Daffodils will all be blooming!

Jo, I did see the youngun in the nest yesterday and read Steve's post. If that HP this morning don't produce an egg, nothing will! :)

Hip is just doing. Still having quite a bit of pain and now my knee on the other leg is giving me a fit. I'm sure that is from the extra work it has had to do.

stronghunter said...

Hope that hip gets better, Sharon. From everything I hear, it will. I am still working on trying to improve the functioning of my knee, but my surgery was far less complicated than yours was.

stronghunter said...

Jo, if the link is confusing, this might help:

stronghunter said...

I did move the bird bath close to the porch to see what the squirrels do, but I have some problems with uneven ground there, and I am wondering if the birds will be uneasy so near the house. There is a spot in my yard that usually has water. It is a hole in the ground where the drainage from the gutters empties. I have seen squirrels drink there and Luna loves it. I suppose it would not freeze unless it gets very cold for a long time.

stronghunter said...

Hi, Everyone,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SANDRA!!!

Well, it's certainly never a dull moment at the nest! Hope the juvie situation is resolved fairly peacefully, and there will soon be an egg. With all that HP, one can't be far behind!

Need to ask for prayers big time for a friend of Ken's and his whole family. His name is Armando, and his wife of 22 years was killed in an auto accident yesterday. We don't know the whole story yet, but Ken got a text message from him early this morning. Ken spoke with him on the phone briefly, but didn't learn any of the particulars about the accident. Momster/Dadster prayers are powerful, and he really needs some. Thanks in advance. ♥

I need to get the last doctor's report done, so will say bye for now. Hope everyone has a good day. I ♥ us!!! (Emma says WOOF!)

Thanks to all of you for your prayers and wishes for Ken's friend Armando. His kids are all grown; the youngest daughter just got married last summer. Still can't quite believe that Armando's wife is gone. She was a 2x cancer survivor, and she worked for Kaiser Permanente. Boy, life can turn on a dime when you least expect it.
Well, I need to go out and water some of the patio plants. It will soon be dinnertime, too. I'll be back (hopefully) later tonight to check in. Margy, good to see you! You're right--it's soon Oatmeal Creme Pie time. I'd better get a few, too! Have a great evening, everyone! I ♥ us!!

Good Morning Eagle Buds

nest is still in total blackness

Goodorming Judy and all my eagle friends.

Nest is too dark to see anything. Have nothing planned for today so I will be doing a lot of nest watching. Hoping for an egg today.

According to the Momster page on Yahoo, the earliest we have had an egg was 1/31 and the latest was 2/15, so we are right in the middle of that 2 week window.

BTW, there are no egg laying dates for 2013 or 2014 - is Paula the person who updates that page?

I am hearing eagle calls on the cam, but from a distance - not from right in the tree.

Margy, it was great seeing you on the blog. And yes, I noticed Jupiter though I didn't know it was Jupiter. I actually thought to myself, if Margy was on the blog she would tell me what planet I'm seeing so close to the moon! Thanks for the info!

Lolly, enjoy the games today - safe travels!

Good morning all. Watched nest come in to view empty and heard same sounds as Sandi. Can watch some before leaving for work. Maybe the warmer weekend will bring an egg.

Belle arrived at 6:55 and hasn't left. I'm not goin' anywhere either - I am on "egg alert!"

Shep just returned with a stick - I was hoping he'd bring some food.

And NOW both poof!! RATS!

Sandi said...

One back - not sure which.

Sandi said...

Now back to both - Shep was the first to arrive, followed by Belle.

Both back now. I get the impression something is distracting them this morning. Sandi - hope you see an egg today. I'm heading for work soon and will check on my breaks. Enjoy your day.

Poof Shep! And already back with another stick. His last time in her brought grass. Busy boy today with the house-building!
