Paula, take care with the driving. At 5:30 this morning a car went into a lake between Dallas and Denton. Body of a man has been recovered. Roads are horrible!! No paper this morning and wondering if we will get mail.

Laurel sent me a video of the boys sliding on the ice. They got about 4 inches of sleet and now it is just solid ice. Same here but not that much. Also, yesterday cars slushing through the ice on the roads pushed it into piles. It refroze during the night and now people are getting flat tires from the jagged ice. Crazy! I am going no where!! Even if I could get out, I would not be able to get back home. Our drive way slopes down to the street, we would be unable to get back up it. Wish the boys lived closer so they could slide my driveway!

Lori, the pecan cookies are basically candy on top. Think I should have cooked it less as it got very chewy. Do not want teeth to be damaged! LOL Now need to get busy with coffee cakes. Going to get Jack to get a fire going so I can put them in front of the fire to rise.

Thanks for the reminder, JO !

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day - December 7 1941 72 years ago

I remember it well even though I was not quite 5 years old. There was much drama in my young life--my new baby sister was 21 days old and not at all welcome in my "only child" eyes ! We were temporarily living in Glendale, CA while Daddy went to "Union Oil School". There were frequent black outs because planes could be heard off shore. The adults sat out on the porch discussing the situation and I, too scared to be alone in my bed, would creep out and settle on Mother's lap. Ha, that rascally baby had to stay put in her crib while I reveled in motherly love.

stronghunter said...

I was not born yet. It happened the next day.

My mother talked about blackouts when they had to turn out lights. They had the bathroom window covered so that they could have a light in there in case she was in the middle of diaper-changing or some such thing.

LOL Kay! Love your post!

Fire going, two bowls of sweet dough rising in front of the fire. When it is double in size I will make 8 coffee cakes. We had one for breakfast this morning. I still had two in the freezer from last year. Yummy!!!

Forgot to say we say 19 this morning. Heat wave now and 23. Predicted more sleet this afternoon but so far nothing.

No church tomorrow...we do not drive on ice!

Jo, glad your kitty is doing well. Shirley, 20 years is great. Lucky has had a lucky life!

Annie's story....One rainy August morning (Yep, rain in August!) Jack was first to leave in the morning. And, there was a bedraggled wet little 6 or 7 week old kitten. She followed him to his truck, so he came in to get Laurel to hold it while he left. Well, of course, we had to take the kitten in. Laurel left for work and I had plans to work at school though it had not started yet. Took the kitten across the street and got the neighbor to kitty sit. That evening Joey and I washed her in flea dip in a milk jug. Also, that evening as Jack held her on his shoulder he declared "Guess we have a cat." We already had Misty, who was ageing. (Best cat ever!) Took Annie to the vet. She had ear mites, worms, and we took care of the fleas. She had been dumped. She is now almost 19.

Tree is done and so are the decorations ..didn't overdue either this year.

Grabbing a shower and heading to Larry's .
Will play tomorrow by ear..we will see what the weather does.

stronghunter said...

Need to go to grocery store. I hope it is not too crazy there. I have been putting this off. Maybe I will try the Food Lion. It is usually calmer.

I did not practice bowling today. I cannot find my bowling pass. I hope they can issue me another one, as I can't get the league rate without it. Can't imagine what would have happened to it.

Might not get another chance to practice, as I have a feeling schools will be closed on Monday. We shall see.

Sandi said...

Hi all! Tree is in place in the front window and lit but not decorated - not sure when the ornaments will get added! Inside is decorated - I took it easy this year as well. Outside, we only put the large wreath next to the front door - that may be the extent of the outside decorations as well!

Laundry is done, next up is the grocery store. IEP will have to wait til tomorrow after tennis.

Paula, great news that Larry has a contract on the house! Safe travels back to the beach - sounds like just rain here tomorrow.

Jo, glad to hear that Scar got a good report from the vet.

Andy, great news about the knee!

Kay, hope you're able to get Penny outside to do her thing without risking a fall!

Lolly, no matter how long I was trapped in my house, I would not be inclined to cook or bake! I'll do some cookies for Christmas but won't enjoy baking them!

OK, later!!

Lori O. said...

I'm with you, SANDI - nothing could be done to force me into baking. Love to eat the rewards though!

KAY, I used to live in GLENDALE, CA! How exciting. What a small world. Do you know where you lived?
So, glad that you and Penny have a safe way of getting outside. I was worried.

PAULA, glad you have a traveling companion tomorrow. Are you putting a tree up at the beach, too?

SHIRLEY, sorry about Lucky, but what a lucky boy to have you and Kathryn in his life. 20 yrs is a long cat life.

HODA, I can't tell you how much I love your postings of your daily schedule. It just amazes me. Certainly you had a great time at all the Christmas fairs. I hope so.

JO, glad Scar is home and well.

LOLLY, are you baking all the same coffee cakes, or making different recipes?

JUDYE, where are you?

MARGY, bet you're home from work now and working on the apartment.

JANET, wish I could get in the Holiday spirit. It just hasn't hit me yet.

So far I've read 3 chapters and finished my Math assignments/homework...I'll write up the assessment before bed then study and read more tomorrow.

Love you all! ♥

Well it was minus ten this morning!
A tad chilly. Warranted a winter coat.
There is a wind.
Honestly I think I see a layer of ice on the lake!!!
Not like Alberta and Northern Quebec as lakes and rivers froze solid!!! Yet I am sure I see ice on the lake!!! Very thin layer.

Going out to a Christmas Reading fund raiser for the Grans. Will set up, attend and serve Hot apple cider and hot chocolate.

Glad you will play it by ear PAULA. I hope Bro is dependable this weekend!!!

Had a beautiful day.
Feeling blessed.

Lolly said...

All the same coffee cakes. It is so delicious. I have been baking them every years for over 50 years. Our traditional Christmas breakfast, but freeze and have all year on special days. Sweet yeast bread rolled with pecans, cherries, and raisins...and cinnamon and sugar, of course.

Love baking! And really love it when it is so cold and can not go out. I can't go out, can't shop, perfect baking days. Tomorrow I am going to think about other Christmas things. LOL

Good Evening EagleBuds. Been reading comments a few times today in between going around in circles w/Xmas stuff & several phone calls.
Was happy and sad reading about all the pets, but seems all who live with our group have the best of care. Bless them all.
Don't know if this was mentioned here the other day and I didn't want to bring it to attention, but Fubby told me that Obama approved a bill that none of the energy wind mills now working can be "touched" for 30 years. I thought that was horrible, but just did some research and discovered that the Maine Audubon Society has found that some open areas for windmills that are NOT near wildlife populations has been very safe, especially for all our flying friends who need to be near water. I do not know if it's Federal or State regulations that determine sites for windmills, but I hope EVERYONE will do this kind of placement research first!
Hope the upcoming ice/freezing rain will get out of here quickly. Our retired Park secretary who now lives somewhere near Dallas (she say's not far from OK) is staying indoors til it's all gone.
Need to use a few shoulders for some friends and family---our good friends who moved to new house in NC 2 years ago had it burglarized while they were at Dr. appt. and dinner TH evening. Got home at 9:30pm and found garage & house vandalized. New huge TV & lots of her jewelry taken. Some help may be that neighbor saw a p/up w/trailer and 4 guys pretending to be working on the lawn! Eddie is out doing that almost every day.
Just got call from daughter in TX. new house. They just discovered water on a floor leaking from somewhere. Called the builder who lives couple blocks away and he got orig. plumber over there in 10 minutes.
After making hole behind refrigerator could tell water coming from above, in wall. In the one attic guest room upstairs, is door into real attic and a plastic water pipe had a pinhole----probably chewed by a rat!!!!! There were traps for mice there as critters were moving in as house was being built. They are shop vacuuming the water out the hole now, but baseboard is wet and warped & water got under marble tile kitchen floor, so grout will have to be studied. Her cats didn't do their jobs, so offered to send our Binky (Jekyll/Hyde)back down
to her hometown!
Thank you for listening to all this saga! Sherry new about our friends' burglary as that happened to them after the fire.So we agreed "it's always something" and that was a week for all of them from the devil!!
Other than that, things are fine here and so happy to read of all the Xmas progress on blog, Paula's good news report, Lori's vigilant studying, etc!
Thanks for listening (again) and
have a wonderful Evening.
Back to Xmas cards~~~ Luv U Guys☺

Good evening my dear friends! <3 its been a dandy day!
I got to work and had a great day. Fully booked and fully rockin’ the massage!  I hate to admit it, but I’ve enjoyed working Saturdays. I have one more to work, the 21t.

I was getting a headache at work, and the culprit is typically my left shoulder. The traps spasm down. I got one of my co workers to work it out for me so I didn’t wake with a migraine in the a.m. Thankful for good friends! <3

So got home, Livvy wasn’t hungry and didn’t want to go out to dinner with us. We went to Porta Via, a nice small Italian place. Not uber kid friendly, but good for the grown ups. Shrimp scampi for me! I was hungry. And hot tea!

I was feeling really good tonight and it was nice and brisk out, upper 20’s and so I felt like not going home….we went holiday shopping. We are done. I do want to get a couple extraneous things for LIvvy, but nothing she NEEDS. If I didn’t pick anything else up she’d be fine.
We always get the grown up kids each a small gift and then a “family “ gift. The grandkids get a couple presents each. I have $$ limit. But anyway, I am most pleased. I wanted to get Chelsea and Chris a infrared heater like I bought for us …. Had seen one @ big lots, didn’t get it and have been kicking myself ever since. Well, wandered in there tonight and they had them again. I spent $200 on one for us last year. This one, does the same thing, looks very similar, $130. 
I do have to do a little shopping yet, for Tom, but the stuff we do together, for the kids, grandkids, is done done done!

Tuesday, when I take Olivia to school, I will have a wrapping party. I drag everything in from the camper and wrap it!

We have ice moving in over night again, but supposed to change to rain tomorrow.
LYNNE2: such good news! I am so happy for you and it looks beautiful there. So is the apartment like a studio apartment?
LORI: I think likely the reason the holiday madness hasn’t hit you yet is because you are so centered and focused on school. Do you get a holiday break?

JUDYE: your table is beautiful. I remember how you used to decorate. Seems strange to me you not setting everything out…But, I have to admit, I sometimes think that if it weren’t for LIvvy and the grandkids, I might not put much out.
MEMAJO; Glad Scar is home!

I guess I should simmer down and get some sleep tonight. I am just feeling very good having the shopping done!  Now tomorrow, I need to grocery shop and work on that ice skating costume…
Sweet dreams to all!

Lolly said...

Just got on the blog. Read the email, chatted on fb, but reading all the comments on has made me smile again.

Habby dance habby dance habby dance!

Loretta, so very sorry for Sherry's latest problem. Good grief!!

Yes, the ice here is horrible. We are in the area getting the freezing fog. Can not really see it but Jack could feel it when he went outside. That will be a new fresh glaze on top of the existing ice. Lovely!

Lolly said...

Night all! SED!!

Good Very Early Morning, Eagle Buds !

Up early for some help w/sciatic pain and so glad I decided to sit down here for a while !

LYNNE, have responded to your wonderful news via e-mail. I'm so happy for you and Steve. I visited the kennel on line--what a beautiful facility and grounds. The view from the apt. must be spectacular ! Congratulations, dear girl !!!!!

LORI, Glendale ? Remember I'm talking about 1941 ! I suspect the big old house with a wrap around front/side porch is long gone and I don't know that the address ever registered with me. I do remember olive trees in the yard and my dad and neighbors harvested and sold them---something about the oil and the war effort ?? I also have fond memories of a little ol' guy with a fresh veggie truck who used to go up and down the streets like today's ice cream trucks. We kids would run out and buy a handful of green beans to munch on---I still love munching on fresh raw green beans ! Karen was born in a hospital in that city, but there, too, I've no idea what the name of it was. I can just remember Daddy and me standing on the ground below a window where Mother was standing with the baby. I asked, "why is she so red?".

LORETTA, what a shame that Sherry is having even more problems as they settle back in. Too bad, too, about the neighbors misfortune. Hope the scoundrels are apprehended.

Heading back to bed for more zzzz's before Penny's 7am rising time.

Love and prayers all round !

Lori, I agree with Janet that you're so focused on school that the Christmas spirit hasn't had time to set in. Plus, you're not in your own house.

Lynne, I am still smiling about your news!! I'm sure you have thought about the fact that, while you won't have noisy neighbors above you, you may have some 4-legged noisy neighbors below you at times! :) Checked out the kennel on FB and the main kennel with the apartment above looks lovely! Lori! (((Hugs)) This too, shall pass. (studying and tests) Hang in there!!!

Kay, really hate to hear you are having some pain. Pain while lying in bed is NOT good! Can you take a muscle relaxer when you go to bed?

Yes, still smiling as I think of Lynne and Steve. Oh, yes, they are going to have barking all around them, but you know, I think they can deal with that! And, dogs do not curse and their family or steal checks!!!!

Lolly said...

That was supposed to be "at their family".

Lolly said...

No, Jo, we do not want anyone climbing the Sycamore Palace in unsafe conditions.

Most churches here are closed today. Ours was having only one service...with no minister, and only music and a devotional. Our minister has a long drive to church. Laurel's church was closed. Need to call Michael to see how they are doing. Lots of folks here getting cabin fever.

I think this is interesting. All freeways and interstates in Fort Worth closed at 6 AM this morning and not opening up until 6AM tomorrow. They need to get heavy equipment out there to do serious work removing what they are calling "Cobblestone Ice." Have no idea what that is.

It started snowing while I was playing tennis. Already, it has mostly turned to rain, though there is some ice and snow mixed in. Roads are just wet, not slippery.

OK, I hear Zach's IEP calling to me - gotta get to it! Later!

LOLLY I love your writing on ice in Texas and how you all are coping. Sorry Jack fell.
Remember some of us live with ice at least four no the of the year!!!
You buy ice grippers. You lift your wind shield wipers off the windshield do they would not tear. You decide every day what you can or can not handle. You work on being really positive because you never know who might need an extra lift to deal with the day.
Stay safe and let us know if Michael is back home with electricity. HUGS

Really snowing hard here, and many parts of WV getting mention with snowfall totals.

ice grippers, Hoda...I remember always your reference to them, and I would like to get some too...one fall and I would most likely break one of my lacey bones!

Hoda, the bad thing about ice here is we do not have equipment to get rid of it. Also, Fort Worth is a big city with lots of high overpasses.

Now, for us in the country, no way can we get out. It is uphill to our garage. Not steep but a definite slant. It is a solid thick sheet of ice. The road is also bad. Not much traffic to clear it off. We are fine...plenty of firewood and food. Only thing I am running low on is dishwashing soap. Too much baking. LOL

Good Afternoon to Everyone andHAPPY, HAPPY BIRTYHDAY, SHIRLEY! YOU'RE THE BEST

I saw Lynne and Steve's Xmas Miracle story last night and was so excited, had to tell Fubby all about it even though he had just gone to bed! WONDERFUL!

Everyone just stay off the roads. We don't have a lot, but it's tricky outside.
Margy, so glad your family made it from FL. Have a great visit!!
Can't really blame the weather, but sadly just saw Ravens have a loss at last minute. Nothing to say about the Deadskins----maybe they need prayer.
Stayed up so late, eyes are still tired & am a little dizzy, but try to finish cards.

IEP is D-O-N-E, watched the Ravens game - what a finish!! Dinner is in the oven. It is pouring outside - no snow here! There IS a chance of snow in Tuesday's forecast - fingers crossed!

Judy, now you have no excuse for not putting up a tree!! What kind of Grandma doesn't have a Christmas tree???

Speaking of Christmas trees, ours is still standing there in the front window with lights but no ornaments. May work on fixing that situation after dinner - if Denny and I do it together, we can knock it out in no time. We'll see.

Margy, glad to hear that your company arrived safely - enjoy your time with them!!

Paula, safe travels back to Paradise!!

Shirley, so what did you do on your birthday??

Probably won't get back on the blog tonight - prayers continue for Dana's dad, Kelsey's mom, both Norms and Miracle Michael.

I'll see y'all in the AM!

PAULA, wise decision. Glad we won't have to worry about you. Be safe tomorrow. Highways should be fine by 10 or so.

LOLLY, sorry for Jack's fall. Glad he's okay. You stay put!

HODA, your Chai Lattes sound delicious and warming. I'll have one, too.

Off to check the forecast and transfer everything into tomorrow's bag for clinical. Hoping the roads are not icy in the morning.

So Michael drove down for our lunch today. It was just John Michael and I...no grkids or Ajay. The reason for that is the kids were worried about me...thought I was backing off from them...which I have been...they are 32 and 25...but they have missed me since I have moved to the beach. I thought I was doing it slow enough...I thought they didn't need me around as much. They told me not to back off so quick. LOL. Gotta love those boys <3

paula eagleholic said...

And the rest of the story today...

I have needed a repair on the front end of the car...been putting if off. Well there has been an angel on my shoulder this week...first the electric and now the car.

The front wheel started making a loud noise and vibrating on the way to lunch today. On the way back it was worse. I swore if I could get the car home...I would leave it in the shop up here and borrow Larrys car (he also has a truck) and drive his car back to the beach tomorrow.

Well the front wheel came off while I was driving. Thank goodness I was only going 35 and I was able to pull the car onto the snowy shoulder. I am ok...car had to be towed. All the lugnuts came off and one bolt broke off too.

paula eagleholic said...

I don't know if the one issue caused the wheel to come off or what...but I am feeling very lucky and blessed this week in more ways than one.

Got home..my neighbor shoveled the driveway while I was on the phone with the boys and Larry after I got home. Then she brought me over some deer soup and sloppy joes.

Will get Larrys car tomorrow after he gets dug out...we have had 6" here.

Called the boss...she understood.

Good Morning Eagle Buds !!!

PAULA, your guardian angel is working overtime ! So glad you were going slow and are blessed fast reaction timing ! Glad you're staying put til' the weather improves.

LOLLY, hope JACK's keister isn't too sore today. What a wallop this storm system gave you Texans ! You asked about a muscle relaxer--not exactly, but since the sciatic nerve isn't a muscle I don't think it would help. I do take Neurontin and Tylonal three times a day, as well as Meloxicam and a baby aspirin so I've plenty of pain killers coursing through my veins. Thankfully the thing doesn't kick up it's heels every day--no clue as to what sets it off.

Sure hope the weather is cooperating with the plans MARGY and The Kidster have for today !

Still coping with things here and being very careful because I know the rules re:falls ! This evening Julie and Hugh will pick me up and we'll go to a fund raiser dinner only about a mile from my house. It's for the food pantry where Seth and I are volunteers and the food is always great ! About 9 area eateries cater, each bringing their specialties, mmmm good.

Til' then Penny and I are keeping our tootsies warm, only going out when absolutely necessary !

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO CINDI !

Love and prayers for all !!!

Falling ice

Video of falling ice, in case you have not seen it on the news.

Low last night was 30 at our house and presently 32. Jack says the road looks good and our drive way except up by the house. Says we can not get my car out as his truck is right there. Do not know why he does not want me sliding into his truck. lol So, going into town is a possibility if we take a different route than ususal. Where the road is shaded there is still ice.

Kay, when I have had sciatic problems, I tensed up thus causing the muscles to make it worse. Just a thought! Hope you are better this morning.

Beautiful picture you posted yesterday, Jo. Was that taken from your house?

We finally got our Sunday paper yesterday afternoon. No paper this morning but waiting for it to come. Love reading the paper, reading news on the computer is just not the same!

Hi, Everyone,

Oh, golly! I see I've missed your Birthday, Shirley! HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!!!

Happy Birthday to Cindi, too!

I'm just blown away by Lynne's fantastic news! Talk about a Christmas miracle--WOW!!! So happy for you, and for Steve! I can't imagine a more perfect place for you to live, or a more perfect job for Steve~! God is SO
good, all the time!!!!!

Paula, God has certainly been good to you, too! He was surely looking out for you!!!! What a scary thing to happen! I am so very thankful that you're OK!

Lolly, very happy that Jack is OK too, after the slippy slidey driveway incident! You (and our kids!) certainly have been having some crazy weather! They have had a long weekend, since neither of them had to work due to road conditions, and the kids were out of school due to the weather, too.
They've been sledding and generally having fun in the snow/ice!

Today is pretty crazy at my roost.
We started out at 36º this morning, going up to (I hope!)
63º. Late last night the Santa Ana winds started up, and it's been close to a hurricane here today. The winds are at least 60 mph, because our front door keeps blowing open unless the deadbolt is locked. The house is making some really loud, crazy, creaking noises, too. Can't imagine what the wind chill factor must be! Thank God it seems to be slowing down somewhat right now, and the winds are supposed to die down by tomorrow morning some time. I DID call and schedule a tree trimming service to come out next Tuesday, the 17th, to start trimming our HUGE trees in the front and back yards. Will have to take pictures and share them with you guys. It will be quite a project!
Well, need to go finish vacuuming so Emma will come out of her crate, and not have a heart attack or something. She is a total wimp when the vacuum is around! Hope everyone stays safe and cozy warm today. Will check back in later if I can stay awake after dinner! Emma says, "Woof!"
I ♥ us!!!

Lori O. said...

Good evening everyone.

Sorry if I scared anyone by not checking in this morning. Honestly, I was so frantic about the roads and leaving early, I didn't realize I hadn't checked in until I read through the posts. Sorry. Bad girl, Lori!

It was a scary morning on the roads but worth it to be at the hospital today. I had my first patient that I could really converse with and was not in an altered mental state. So, that was really nice for a big change. I also had the nicest RN I've had yet - she couldn't have been any nicer, and that's not usually the case. :)

KAY, glad you're getting out for the dinner tonight. Enjoy, my darling!

JO & HODA, so glad your power is back. It's too cold to be without heat.

MARGY, hope your family time is really, really special.

Lots of ice everywhere here and daytime highs this week in the teens and 20's...nights near 0. I've been out updating cat houses and trying to make them warmer by adding several yards of fleece to each of them and positioning wind breaks to keep them comfy as possible. Think I'll have to sneak them into my Dad's heated garage!

Time to hit the books again. Have a quiz in pharmacology tomorrow and I'm snowed under with papers to write and projects to produce before Christmas vacation.

Love you all. Big ((((HUGS)))).

Prayers for SANDI's son Brian, the Norms, Michael, DanaMo's Dad (what's up with him?) & Kelsey's Mom.
