Well cograts, Jill. Hi Suzanne, Jim, Mits, Sharon, anyone else I missed. Have a great day. Off to work, lots of seeds need to be sown today. Sharon, I saw my towhee yesterday for the first time this spring. Also my brown thrasher is here. Next will be the catbirds and the hummers. Gotta make some hummer food. Have a great day. man I wish those clouds would go away!

Sandy said...

Morning!

We have had a hummer in the last week, but just the one. I'm further south though. We have three zillion cardinals, and the little yellow birds that migrate (can't remember what they are, but I'm sure you guys will know!)

We also have a raccoon that visits us every night...a veritable nature center!

Awesome pic Suzanne.

Suzanne said...

Thanks for the new thread, Steven. You're welcome for the pic. Awfully big stick!
Thanks for the heads up, Jill.
Mits, I told you on the other blog to give Tai and big ol baseball cap, he could hang his head out the window, and DCs finest would probably never notice! (But when you think of that pic, it is funny!)

I have about a gazillion cat birds at my feeders now, both male and female. The smaller birds are getting used to them, so they can all eat at the same time. I also now have grackels! I try to chase them, they're just way to big, even for the mourning doves. And I have a male and female downy! I see them every day now, just not together. I'll let you all know if I have little Downy's! And the house I hung? Yesterday I could see little twigs all the way up to their entrance hole. Geesh, must be one very large nest in there.

Well I am off to a staff meeting. I just wanted to say another storm has proven too much for a stalwert pair of eagles and the Maine nest has lost their little ones in this storm...how very sad. I liked the first report better before we got to see their young, watch them try to weather the storm much like we did our Belle, and watch their young die to the extreme conditions.

As some are saying on the forum this will give dad a chance to hopefully heal now. And she will not be sitting there all day in the drenching rain and cold wind. They too did their best, but they lost.

Yet there are people out there whose nests were barely nearing the fledging stage who have lost their kids to a senseless tragedy at VA Tech.

Sorry for the downer post..trying to pull out something positive here...I guess it is Courage and the will to survive. It runs so very deep within all living things when they are functioning in a healthy way.

My prayer for each of you today is health for you and all those you love.

MITS said...

Good idea, Suzanne:). I'll put a Nationals cap on him. Mei and Tian were having some playtime together this a.m.

Morning all. Glad Lib and Belle made another visit. I saw the big stick in the nest at 7:30, and knew that they had been here. Glad they got it moved to its proper place. Now we need eggs.

It was hard to whittle down an hour and a half of the banding videos down to about 25 minutes, but I finally got the banding videos done late last night. The last one is loading to youtube this morning. The first 2 parts are on the eagletmomsters blog. Just click on my name, or the youtube link is listed below. I will post the youtube versions directly into the blog as soon as the last one is ready at youtube.

Good morning all, my first post and my studies lagging since I discovered the enjoyment of watching the eagle cams.

Thank you Glo, I have been watching the Maine pair. It brought tears to my eyes, how sad indeed! I peeked today and the nest was empty and I didn't see a little head popping up.

My heart goes out to the families and friends of those poor VT students. May they find comfort and peace through one another .

RobynAnn

Suzanne said...

Welcome, Robynann! Glad to have you join us.
Nicely put about Maine and VT, nature has been vicious this year!

BW eaglets just got lunch, osprey nest MT, our nest MT, PA falcon on eggs, as is Star.
One of the chicks in BW looks like a little silverback!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

This year has just not been kind for a lot of us in some ways and miraculous in others.

I have to say that attending the candlelight vigil at Virginia Tech last night was a very spiritual time. I am not sure how many thousands of people were there but when I looked over the crowd, it was just a sea of candles being held up in honor and memory of those injured and lost. I had the opportunity to speak with Meredith Vieira from the Today Show for just a minute. She hugged me and cried. This has really affected so many. The whole experience seemed surreal. Standing in front of Norris Hall and realizing what had taken place there just the morning before was unbelievable. It is a small building next to Burress Hall where Andrew's Honor Band concert was just a few months ago. The VT students we spoke with thanked us for coming and showing support. Definitely a lot of people coming together to start the healing process. Even through the tragedy, this renews your faith in mankind, seeing the support from so many people. GOD IS SO GOOD!

Suzanne said...

PA falcon egg turning time!

Suzanne said...

Well, the BW eagles have a new fish, and one of the chicks is tackling it all by himself. The other one is watching. It's a little fish, chick sized!

normabyrd said...

SHARON--That must have been quite a touching experience last night at VT---one you will remember for a long---long time----I was at Bridge Mon.---a member's granddaughter attends VT---Many--many phone calls & 45-60 min. later----son called--granddaughter was safe----can't imagine what those parents were going through---

Anne-Marie said...

thank you Sharon for putting forth the effort to go to Virginia Tech. In a way you were there for all of us who couldnt go and we thank you. My youngest is in UC Davis and as this was happening the fear that this could happen where he is went through me. I'm sure I wasnt alone with that feeling as many parents try to guard their children from a sometimes wicked world. On that note its time for me to put one foot in front of the other and try to make this day as productive as possiable. May God protect you all.

egg in the cup????!!!!
please tell me it is!!!!

paula eagleholic said...

Welcome Robynann and Mal!

Mal, that is not an egg in the cup, although it is white, it is too small to be an egg. It could be a piece of animal bone, or perhaps a piece of white bark.

Robyn said...

Thank you heidi, I live in martinsburg wv and until they tore down the woods behind me we use to get deer, foxes, turkey you name it but they are seen rarely now.

We have a wide array of birds back here since we still have plenty of trees and brush. I have my chickadee's, downy woodpeckers and pileaed or two. We have hawks and falcons which we hear often when they fly overhead. I make sure my birdfeeders remain full.

paula eagleholic said...

NORFOLK, Va. A set of month-old eagle triplets at the Norfolk Botanical Garden are getting a clean bill of health.

Officials from the Center for Conservation Biology at William and Mary say the two males and one female are growing nicely, are free of parasites and disease and appear "in really good condition."

The eaglets received a thorough examination yesterday. They had their beaks, feet and talons measured and blood sampled. The eagles were also weighed and banded to keep tabs on the eagles.

This is the fourth year that a pair of bald eagles has mated in an 800-pound nest of sticks and twigs about 80 feet in the air in a huge pine tree at the city garden.

Officials say it is also the second straight year that the parents have bred triplets -- a rarity for the federally protected species.

The youngsters will likely attempt their first flight around Memorial Day.

Sandy, how is Tom and Mother. Prayed for them today and will continue to do so. love ya. donna

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Donna, Andrew is okay. He chose to go to a concert at Concord University last night instead of going to the vigil. We talked to Mattie a lot last night on the say home. Her one question was - Sissy, can this happen at my school? Couldn't tell her absolutely no but chances were great that it wouldn't.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Mr. Cowbird just landed on my roof. I love them. I wonder if Mrs. Cowbird is incubating eggs yet.

Mauley said...

Andrew isn't much of a talker is he Sharon? He has been through a lot this year. I am thanking God right now for your new job. God is blessing you Sharon. He will continue to do so. You have been such a blessing to me, little sister. Is Beverley and Mother doing well? Hang in there. big sis

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Now I have a nuthatch out here too. I love my birds. They are such a joy in my life. Mr. Towhee is protecting a nest I think out in Beverly's yard. He eats here and there but haven't seen Mr. Towhee for a while.

Good Morning Suzanne

movin said...

Thanks much for the videos of the banding, Paula...very interesting. Do you think the first chick is the female? I think it's quite a bit larger.

Very sad to hear about the Maine eagle chicks...I looked in at that site a couple of times tonight, but I can't see eagles of any age in the nest, so I suspect it is true. Those late storms this year have really wreaked havoc, but there are many nests with living chicks to look forward to.

Liberty and Belle still have a chance, and the BW Ospreys are looking better again.

Have a great Thursday, everybody,
Jim

Suzanne said...

Good morning, eagle world. Good morning, Jo! Welcome Back! Glad you got home safely! I know you had a good time.

Nice night out, but cloudy. Didn't see the first star! It was 48° at my house...heat wave!

AND guess what!!! We have an ospry in the nest. I presume he/she spent the night, he was there when I logged on at 4:15. I hope that's a good sign. BW chicks are sleeping by themselves too, so it's not that cold. Our cam is updating, but nest is MT. Too dark anywhere else to see.

Have to go back and read blogs, see what I missed. All have a great eagle day. Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly!

Suzanne said...

Osprey just had the glowing eye going on... so nice to see someone there at this hour!!!

Suzanne said...

Awwww, the chicks have their heads together and they're snuggled together. They look too cute.

movin said...

Good morning, Suzanne.
I believe that is the male Osprey, and he was there when I crashed.

I'm up in the middle of the night, finding everything still "on," so I decided to take a peek.

Spirit eagles are abundant at our site. Do you think that is a good sign?

Jim

Suzanne said...

Read the blogs, welcome Mal! Nice to see new folks on here!
Osprey still on nest, glowing eye thing still going on.
BW chicks are sleeping side by side and bek to beak. That is just too cute. Oh, now one moved. Got a pic, I'll send to Lisa. Our nest still MT.

Suzanne said...

Good morning, Jim. Those spirit eagles are there every morning! Spidey helps keep them there.
Very well could be the male, can't see a collar with the infrared light. He's been there all night, then. Kind of what I thought. If they're there when I logon at 4something, they have usually spent the night. But they don't sleep, they just sit there, eyes always oppen.

You watching the BW chicks? They move in unison sometimes, too cute to watch.

Suzanne said...

Oops, that's open, only 1 p, not 2. Typing too fast...

movin said...

Good morn to ya, Suzanne,

Yes, I am watching the BW eaglets also, and I have been wondering for some time if they are the same sex.... #1 is certainly bigger, but maybe it's only the 2 days difference. I haven't made up my mind yet, but they're kind of like twins.

The Osprey is usually asleep in the evening and earlier in the night, but it's probably getting close to dawn back there, so he/she is more on guard.

Well, I'd probably better see if I can get some sleep. More talk more later ... after English classes.

Jim

Suzanne said...

Night, night, Jim.

Osprey still there, only moving his head. BW chicks stil snoozing, our nest still MT, and still too dark to see the PA falcon, and of course anything out west.

Suzanne said...

Uh oh, a second osprey has arrived, but the first one is mantling! Not a good sign that that is our couple!

Suzanne said...

Getting daylight out now, both ospreys are at least on same side of nest. BW chicks still sleeping. Our nest MT, but hoping for a visit anytime. PA falcon on her eggs. I keep saying her, I presume it is her, though the male also helps incubate. Just can't tell the difference unless I see them together. BW parent back, guess with breakfast, but covered one chick up when he/she landed with grass. Osprey mantling again. Not a good sign.

Suzanne said...

BW parent left, chicks did a poop shoot over the side, ospreys just sorta standing there.

Suzanne said...

Osprey that spent the night is taking off right over top of the other osprey. Nice shot.

Suzanne said...

Oh wow, he did not take off. He just flew over the other osprey then landed in the nest next to him/her.

Suzanne said...

WEAGLE ALERT!!!!

Suzanne said...

BW parent is back. Everytime she comes in, she covers the chicks with grass. Belle still standing there looking around. Both ospreys ignoring each other. PA falcon on eggs in peace.

Suzanne said...

WEAGLE gone.

Suzanne said...

BW parent gone. One chick half covered in grass.

Suzanne said...

Original osprey is flapping at the intruder again.

Suzanne said...

Well, he took off this time. Intruder (or mate) still in nest.

Suzanne said...

Both ospreys just hanging around. Looks like a robin in our tree. BW parent back with breakfast, this time. PA falcon sitting pretty.

Suzanne said...

robin gone...

Suzanne said...

robin back. Not sure if this is updating, or on a loop or something. Robin is there for a few refreshes, then gone, then back. Now gone again. But he's in the same place when he comes back. Weird.

Suzanne said...

Ok, he's moved, never mind. Now more birds...

Suzanne said...

Ok, he's moved, never mind. Now more birds...

Suzanne said...

Now a bunch of birds in our tree. I'm guessing the eagles aren't home. Maybe they went for breakfast, and will bring it in to eat.

Suzanne said...

Well, the intruding osprey has left the building. The original osprey is still standing his ground.

Suzanne said...

Guess BW parent has hidden some goodies, and the chicks are trying to find them. Sorta looks like a chick easter egg hunt!

Chick wing flapping, too cool.

carolinabeachmom said...

Good morning Suzanne. I see Jim was up during the night unable to sleep and peeking in on the chicks.
I am at school now and got on for a moment to see if Liberty or Belle had arrived. Belle wasn't there for a very long time. Maybe they'll be back. I'll leave it on so the kids can watch.

Thanks so much for your running comentary of your early morning happenings. We all apreciate it.

Back to getting the room ready for the smiling little faces when they come in at 7:30am. My eyes will be on the pic of our nest.

Suzanne said...

I read the blogs from yesterday, and Sharon, weren't you asking about cow birds incubating? Cow Birds are parasites, they don't have nests and incubate their own. They will lay their eggs in host nests. Their young usually hatch before the host eggs, and the cow bird baby will eventually kill the other babies. That's why I like to get nesting boxes with smaller holes, ones they can't fit into. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Our nest still MT. Looks like our one footed faker female is in osprey nest, and I think she may have been the one to spend the night. Wouldn't swear to it. Other osprey has been in and out. BW chicks just sorta laying around. Beautiful PA falcon still on eggs.

Suzanne said...

Good morning, Carolinabeachmom. Glad you got to see Belle this morning, brief visit that it was. I'm hoping they come back too. Did you see all the smaller birds? One looked like a robin, but can't be sure at this distance!!!

Suzanne said...

Intruder osprey is in and out today. One refresh she comes in, next refresh gone.

Suzanne said...

Little black bird back on our tree. Guess Lib and Belle are still doing breakfast...

Little black bird back on our tree. Guess Lib and Belle are still doing breakfast...

Suzanne said...

More osprey posturing.

Suzanne said...

Well, came in, flapped his wings, and took off.

Suzanne said...

OMG, one chick has his foot over the other chick's back. Both sleeping. Well, they did, they've changed positions now. That was too cute.

Suzanne said...

Well, an osprey has arrived back, and is doing nothing but wing flapping!

Suzanne said...

Took off, this time. Birds are back in our tree, and the BW chicks are still snoozing.

Suzanne said...

OMG, there are now 3 ospreys in the nest!!!

Suzanne said...

Bam, now just 1 female. Wonder if it's our mate, or the intruder.

Suzanne said...

Getting almost dawn in Kent. Looks like cam3 has been fixed! Our 1 osprey is just standing there by herself. Think this is probably the intruder, and it was probably our pair that left, when they both left together. BW chicks may get some more to eat, and our nest still MT. Didn't send any pics around, Belle was only there for a minute, and just kinda stood around. Falcon is so pretty just laying there. Oh, that's our 1 legged faker in the osprey nest. My goodness, is SHE the intruder??? Whoda thought?

Suzanne said...
