Good morning to everyone!

Shirley, glad Hunter managed to get to the bus safely and on time. Hope you have a lovely day.

Margy, thanks for checking on Wanda and how do you like wearing leopard print buttoms? Positive thoughts for Nilla.

Safe travel for Paula.

Have fun together Kay and DanaMo.

Hoda, you are just too funny with your football comments. Thank you for the laughs.

Hoping all the NC coastal residents will be safe and out of danger.

Glad I checked back.

Good wishes for a quick and complete recovery for Chris.

must have been very hurtful.

GOOD MORNING...
SORRY about the coded message...had no idea that happened.
Each morning, when I clean my glassed, I wipe down the keyboard, this is the first time that happened:)

Karla and Donny (husband) drove down to the OBX sometime yesterday to shutter the windows of the beach houses of her in-laws. Now, I am waiting on her to decide to COME HOME! Her words:

Karla Wright Adams
Well it was a gorgeous sunrise. Foggy. Funky clouds moved in and then some rain. The sun is shining now and it is sooo humid. Both houses boarded up and secured. We are contemplating our next move.....

Of course, I want her to leave right now...but I understand the lure of the sea when something is about to happen. Been there, done that!:)

I've posted some of her photos from facebook for those of you who cannot see them. Posted on Just For Fun~

Costume Lady said...

MARGY, thanks for caring and calling♥

DanaMo said...

Kay and I did not meet up! I'm so disappointed, but it's my fault. I read her message wrong with the exit number. I thought she said exit 111 and never paid attention to the Road Name. Turns out it was exit 91 which we drove past!!! If I would have paid attention to the road name my husband would have realized that it was exit 91. As it is he kept asking me if I was sure because I kept saying exit 111 and there's only an exit 112 so that's where we went! Don't you know there was a Cracker Barrel at both!

Dana, can't you still connect?

GOOD NEWS FROM KARLA:

Karla Wright Adams
Ok ~ just downgraded to a Cat2.....but we are outta here in the next few minutes. We are taking the long way.....somewhere. Gonna try to find another route out since I64 is a parking lot now. Might find a hotel and stay tonight and tomorrow. Who knows.....but we are evacuating my favorite place in the world right now. Dear Lord please protect my friends here and their homes!!

Yes, many prayers for those in the path of IRENE!

hedgie said...

Shar....sure pray that Chris gets along okay. That's the kind of injury that I suspected when you said he fell from a ladder. :(

Margy, you are a dear! Enjoy your gadding.

Wanda, glad that Karla is heading out. No guarantee that it won't re-strengthen.....and it IS a mandatory evacuation. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Lolly said...

Know you are worried about Karla, Wanda! And, wishing she was at her home!

Great pictures! Those clouds are awesome. Hope the beach house will remain, good chance it will not.

Sitting with ice on my back once again. Went out and was coiling the hose when it started hurting again. Do not like this. May have to take a muscle relaxer tonight. Have too much to do!

I take Jack to DFW airport tomorrow about noon. Then I head to Laurel's about 3:30. Going up to babysit but looks like I will be the one to take Joseph to a soccer game at 6 as they are going to a party. Yuk, sitting out in the heat. Taking an umbrella for shade!! Spending the night up there as I do not want to drive home late with Jack not here. Home Sunday morning to get ready for party at 2.

hedgie said...

Many of the webcams on OBX are not working....guess they have shut them down...but so far, since some are, they haven't cut power yet. Probably will do that at some point.

hedgie said...

Well, what a total disappointment, Dana and Kay. ARGH!!!!! What a crying shame.

DanaMo said...

I only had a home phone number for Kay. I forgot to send her my cell. We are already back on the road. I left Kay and email and message on her home machine. I hope she understands that I didn't "stand her up" I'm so sad...

Linda said...

Good Afternoon! Feeling that calm before the storm as I remember so many of those hurricanes we prepared for in FL. Keeping prayers going for so many that could be affected and hoping that as they often times do, that the hurricane loses strength just before landfall, wherever that may be.

It sure looks to go right up the coast sparing none in its path. There is still hope, though!

Linda said...

So sad that Dana and Kay didn't get the chance to meet. I am sure Kay is wondering what happened as well. Perhaps she will check her home phone messages from her cell and find out.

hedgie said...

Sure hope so, too, Linda! Of course, there are worse places to spend time that at Cracker Barrel.....as long as I leave the checkbook at home!!

Linda said...

HODA Thank you for your kind words of understanding and advice. I was in awe of how beautifully you spoke to me through your writing. I appreciate your love, concern and help. It's hard to back away for yourself when that isn't in your nature. I know, though, that I am not helping if the person I am trying to help is devious, untruthful or not trying to better themselves.

Again, thank you! xoxo ♥

Linda said...

That's true, Lynn. I haven't been to a Cracker Barrel in....I can't remember how long. I always did love the shop........and the food!

My further report to follow in a minute...
She looks very good ! Good color, is in good spirits...

stronghunter said...

Hi,

Margy, I have answered your very kind e-mail message.

I have to take off and do some hurricane preparation. I was really tired this morning and napped for awhile. I slept last night, but I guess I did not entirely make up for the sleep I missed the night before. Want to make sure we have some non-perishable foods and plenty of batteries.

We need to get the canopy frame in the backyard taken down, but I want Kathryn to help with that. We haven't ever put the canopy on it, but a big storm might blow the frame away.

We had one heck of a storm last night. Will and I had problems finding a restaurant that was open. I am a little worried about him because he is concerned that his first-floor apartment might flood. The storm yesterday flooded the area behind it.

I told him to gather up stuff he thinks might be damaged and come here. Not sure what might happen with his roommate and the Jack Russell. Yikes. All we need is a high-strung dog! George would try to kill him. We would need to put something in a cage. George? The Jack Russell? The roommate?

magpie said...

Nilla...
she said her heart aflutters from time to time, does not last too long, but it is hard for the docs to "capture"
she is on a monitor which will track that activity

I watched the ultrasound being done this morning
told Nilla (aka Janet,)
Looks like you are having twins

She was able to show me some dear pictures and little videos of Leland and Cassie on her phone...

JudyEddy said...

Ok I'm back Jordyn went down at funny we got back home a little early and she was watching Wiggles and I was playing with the picture programs and she come up to me and said come on OMA nap time Do you know any other child that loves her naps She comes from a family of goooood sleepers I love to sleep LOL

JudyEddy said...

Can anyone else get the live cam link up I get message IE cannot display page

magpie said...

Before I left I sprinkled in the air over her, our Momsters Hugs and Lovins'

She appreciates the concerns, and will be in touch as she can....
probably best not to try calling her room phone...at least today, she will do her best to stay in touch...and I think she does a pretty good job at that ! ☺

stronghunter said...

While Will was talking with me during the storm yesterday and remarking on what was happening--branches falling, etc., the roommate was yelling (joking), "We're gonna die! I don't want to die!"

Maybe the roommate AND the dog need to be caged.

Message from Kay:

I'm at my daughter, Julie's house now and will take the dog and head home after checking e-mail and attempting to go to the blog. I turned my puter off mid-afternoon yesterday and cannot get it to open up past the Dell logo page from last night through to the time I left to meet you. SIL will check it tonight or tomorrow--it may be time for a new one. Just hope I haven't lost everything. I think there is one of those little black clouds hovering over my head this week !

Of course, she also lamented over the confusing exit situation. :(

She is NOT looking forward to the stress test thing Sat morning...
she's been there, done that !
I left her in the good hands of male nurse friend named Ron who she has known since he worked in electronics at the local Wal-Mart...

Gee, Margy, prayers for that family going through so much grief and turmoil.

Glad your trial time is over. How many more days before you resume your normal schedule?

Kay said...

DANA, You've heard of crocodile tears, I'm sure--you'd see some were you here. I thought you and Monte would zero right in on Rome-Hilliard Rd.. Sorry if I needed to be more specific. Next time !

Have to report that my puter crashed late yesterday afternoon. SIL will be taking a look tonight or tomorrow---or a new one may have to come out of the budget. I won't be on here much until that is resolved. I'm at Julie's right now and about to take the granddog home with me.

WANDA, I tried Dana's cell, no luck. Had to wait til' I got here because I while at Cracker Barrel I found that my Trak phone expired TODAY ! I thought it was expiring on the last day of this month. Grrrrr.. It wouldn't have mattered, they were too far beyond the exit and with limited time. It's important they get home ASAP due to the earthquake, after shocks and Irene.

Okay, there you have our sad tale. Next time DANA and I will have our ducks in a row, I'm sure !

Be back when I can. Stay safe !!!!!

Margy, did Nilla say whether the stress test is on the treadmill or chemical? Either way, no fun...I would suspect that she will be having the chemical kind.
Do you have Linda's email to send her your new addy?

hedgie said...

You've all heard of bats in the belfry??? Donald found that I have CRACKS IN THE CHIMNEY. ^#@*^!* Two are in mortar joints, but two are horizontal in the block. Judie, do you still have any kin in the VA Beach area??

stronghunter said...

Really do not know if Will is going to accept my invitation to come here. Kind of hope that the roommate will have another place to go, though.

I think I am glad we don't have the fence up right now.

Last night when we were restaurant-searching, I saw what the storm had done to a fence near the mall. It was not pretty.

I wonder if anyone on I-95 got hit with flying fence sections.

Judy, sorry about Jordyn's lizzard experience. Glad you were there for her.

Lynn, so sorry about the chimney cracks. Maybe nothing more than some patching will be needed. Hope so.

Had the chemical stress test. Would volunteer for that again NOT. Very frightening for me.

Have filled the tub with water and filled a large bag with ice and letting the ice-maker do its thing.

Jo, do I remember your neighbors at the beach took care of battening down loose items? Nice neighbors.

Linda, hope you have a speakerphone and aren't sitting there with the phone cradled on your shoulder!
You probably missed my Bill's story from early in the week.....someone hijacked his Mom's refund. She passed late last fall. When he hadn't gotten her refund, he finally called the CPA...who found out that someone else had already filed and claimed so Bill's return was rejected. He is an only child, no spouse, only one doddering sister.....he has to gather up documentation (executor stuff from the courthouse, etc.) before IRS will start an investigation. Can you believe it?

Judie, the chemical stress bothers some people a little or not at all....and others are very sensitive to it. Don't know why!

I will leave the tub filled, and my ice bucket is full. Extra water on hand....will make an extra pot of tea....but seriously doubt that there will be high enough winds here to knock out the power.

hedgie said...

Hope your old chum will be safe, Judie.

Painting looks very nice. Windows are clean (except for sunroom), and road frontage is weed-eaten!!

hedgie said...

Hoping for some moderate weather next week so that I can get to work on the deck railings. Need to be sanded this time before painting. One of the probnlems with latex paint---once it starts to peel, water gets underneath it and then wood doesn't dry well.

Don't usualy watch The Talk, but happened to flip it just im time to see Michelle Ree on....BIG push on to reverse the old "last in/first out" way of laying off teachers. AMEN! Lynn - Nothing would surprise me in these days we live in with identity fraud. The sad thing is if you are a victim of that fraud, they treat you like the criminal until you prove who YOU are.

The IRS is horrible to get a hold of via phone and their phone menu is NOT good when you have something specific to check on.

I was on hold and switched to two different departments before they told me I had to call another number. That took my first hour....

Now I have been on the phone for 40 minutes in my second hour, but finally seem to have an agent who is smart enough to help me figure what is going on and she is nice!

I couldn't find my practitioner priority phone number, which I will use next time!

Judie said...

Problem for me with the chemical test was, and I was warned ahead, it caused cardiac arrest type symptoms. Very frightening. Told me not to worry. Crash cart right outside the door. Well, gee whiz, that's helpful to know.

Friend will be fine. She has lots of friends who live inland and will offer her a place to stay.

Judie said...

Linda, what an inconvenience. Let me try to make you feel better. Recent letter from the IRS indicated we failed to report $1.5+ million in income last year. Stupid people! If we made that much money we wouldn't have to pay income taxes.

Teaching: I think teachers who actually teach children the subject content and how to think critically and creatively should be retained regardless of when hired. Unfortunately, it seems some teachers are forced to teach to the test so students can pass SOL standards. Incoming freshmen are shocked to learn they cannot "do over" assignments and exams until they pass. "We always got to do stuff over in high school." Would you like some whine to go with your cheese?

Linda said...

TWO HOURS - mostly on hold to get the information I needed on an amended return filed 6 months ago for my client......only to find out it was sent to the "audit reconsideration department" three months ago.

They are so quick to send you a letter if you owe them one red cent, but can't send a courtesy form letter letting you know why they are taking their sweet time processing the return you filed.

I wonder if they take this much time processing returns where the taxpayer owes them money.....as compared to the time they take when THEY owe the taxpayer a refund.......

Okay, done venting about the IRS!

Linda said...

Wow, Judie!! How'd you answer that one!! 1.5 million is a pretty hefty teacher's salary, huh? That would be the day.......

hedgie said...

LOL, Judie.....don't you WISH??!!!

Agree with you on the teacher thing....standardized tests as a measurement are a highly subjective tool. Rarely reflects either the student ability or the teacher influence. But the public education system has been dumbed down so far that it is frightening.
ALmost everyday when I do my crossword puzzles, I find myself thinking: my kids probably wouldn't know the answer to this clue, and I KNOW my grands wouldn't. I sometimes think that I have forgotten more than they will ever know.

stronghunter said...

Went to the madhouse that is the grocery story and dropped a wad of money. Oh, my. Line at gas station looks daunting.

I did find some neat gadgets. Lights you plug into the outlets that are supposed to come on in case of a power failure. There were no D batteries. I asked if they have flashlights, and no they do not.

But I already have one that you crank and a big one around here somewhere that I think is okay. Also have a battery-operated lantern. Probably have D batteries, too.

My weather radio is battery operated, but I do not know much about it. Did not look for emergency candles, but got a big, scented one. Already have some candles around here anyway.

Got charcoal. I think there is some Sterno around here.

A trick that might be helpful: Fill plastic bags with water and freeze it. We used the freezer as a cooler when the power went out during Isabel. That's where we kept perishable food.

The wind speed is reduced. But it can still have a big storm surge.

hedgie said...

Linda....right you are. IRS expects to be paid immediately, but they can hold our money indefinitely---and not pay us interest.

Judie said...

Well, we first explained the perceived failure to report in a reasonable and rational manner via letter. A second attempt on the part of the IRS to collect $1.5 million + an even larger penalty caused Darth to get nasty and get our stockbroker involved. Now resolved. Stupid people.

Be interesting to know Shirley's experience with SOL, teacher standards since she was high school.

stronghunter said...

There is definite pressure to see that your students perform well on the SOL tests. And, since they can't graduate until they pass the test, they have to take the tests over.

As far as allowing students to take tests over is concerned, I did not have a policy of doing that. Sometimes they asked if they could, and sometimes they said that other teachers allowed it. They also said that other teachers would accept late work. I did not do that, either, unless the student had been absent. I know some teachers did.

For my freshman composition students at the community college, I did allow re-writes of essays as a means of getting students to pay attention to my corrections.

They got a better grade if the fixed the problems I pointed out. I found that the ones who chose to to re-do were usually the conscientious ones who already had a good grade. An A student wanted an A+ or a B student who wanted an A. Good papers are easy to grade to begin with and an extra good one is even easier, so it did not increase my work load too much.

I did not do that with high school students, though. It just would have been too complicated.

JudyEddy said...

I hope we get a visit now that the CAMERAS ARE WORKING go my camera already on tripod waiting with bated breath

It's a sad tale alright! Monte even asked are you sure it's not exit 91 and I said no I know the email said 111. When we got to 110, the next one was 112. We got off at 112 and waited. Finally, we ate, and got back on the road. When I opened the computer and reread the email I saw that it actually said the name of the road, but I had only paid attention to the exit number. My fault totally. Monte said we should have pulled over and looked. I wish we would have, but I was so sure that I saw exit 111!!! Maybe around Thanksgiving or Christmas I will make the run with Monte, but it's such a long drive.

WOW Hedgie that sounds like an awesome dinner. Maybe I will have shrimp too!

Hi all! Just got home from work and we are going to eat and then secure the outside stuff and clean out the drain on the patio....It's something called a French Drain meaning it's a hole that drains into rock, no actual pipes. It floods every heavy rain despite cleaning it out but better get a head start!

Thanks, Paula. You be extra careful too if headed to the coast. should be a rockin' and rollin' time!

LYNN You ask a very thought provoking question in rgards to teachers and seniority. It is a difficult question to answer because good/bad teachers are measured by subjective terms. In the school where I worked it became a popularity contest...good and bad based on who was liked by the paretns and the students...some for as simple a reason as allowing them to call them with their first names, or for going out drinking with the parents and the about to graduate students if a parent was present!!!That same scale had those same parents and students complain to the Superintendent and the more complaints you had against you , you became a bad teacher!!! The kids knew it and used to threaten that they will do exactly that if they were asked to do an assignment on time or if a teacher did not agree to suprevise a school dance for example...so do you see subjective? There was also the question of Provincial exams and the scores were published not only in the local paper but also across the province. So low scores indicated a bad teacher and that had pressure with it as no one wanted their names in this category. I know some colleagues taught strictly to the exams. Alberta has Provincial exams for grade 3,yes THREE!!!,9, and 12.Again the exam themselves were measuring a standard that did not reflect the classroom population...It was very political.
On a personal note I know that there are teachers who are holding on for dear life because the salary is so good and the insecurity of giving it up was incredible...My first twenty years I was a very good teacher I think. I was innovative, I was creative and I encouraged critical thinking and allowed for exploration.Yet it is exactly that way of teaching that brought me the most criticism and I had to compromise. The last ten years I became less so till I became sure that I could not survive antoher year in a classroom. I held on till fifty five.It was too scary to give up the pay check and there was mounting pressure to play politics and this I found very difficult.I did not go out drinking with parents and students and that was a sign of my disconnect according to those who said I was no longer popular!!!
I hope this answers your question LYNN...good and bad is subjective.

I am very happy to see SHIRLEY reporting on how you are getting ready for the storm. It has been downgraded to category two but some pretty fierce winds I would say.

LYNN I am concerned about the cracks in the Chimney and I am glad you discovered them, because you seem to give them you r attention and action will be taken.

Thank you JUDYE and LYNN for the kind words about my writing.I am grateful.

DANAMO May there be peace and compassion for yourself about the confusion in regards the exits. It is such an easy mistake to make and we have all done such a thing. The BEAUTY is that you were both willing to meet. Again I send {{{HUGS}}} to you and KAY.

Lynne2 said...

that's a good thing Jo! I'm sure the power companies have enlisted the help of many out of state utilities to march eastward to be here to help get the power back up. When we had Isabelle, we saw a lot of out of staters and I would blow my horn and wave to them and give them a thumbs up!

Mema Jo said...

At first I thought they were trucks being used to transport Nat'l Guard!
Hubby confirmed they weren't.

Hoda, Frederick MD is just about 8 miles
from our home in Middletown, MD. I had
my UNO pizza and now I am ready to hibernate in my house. I do need to have

We will get winds but not like 80 mph
Probably around 40 mph. Brought my USA flag in this afternoon.

Candy -Kill Devil Hills NC - was just talking with our Lynne on FB:
Candy Norrell I had to chuckle at all your gatherings. You were very busy. Don't worry about us here. The storm was downgraded to a cat 2 and willbe a cat 1 when we get the brunt of it. Just hoping that it stays there and the water stays on the other side of the road. It should be ok here. Time will tell. I don't plan to go out until it is over. Hang in there and stay safe.

Mema Jo said...

Dana Probably Saturday afternoon hours. (per hubby)

JudyEddy said...

The airplane noise came from the live cam I even turned off the volume just to make sure it wasn't out side LOL

Judie said...

Hi Hoda. Very interesting commentary about teaching. Amazing, isn't it, how even with a different part of the country, there are similar pressures. I find learning and learning to think are no longer goals for so many students. It is the almighty A. Students will actually sometimes beg for an A. My question: If an A indicates mastery of course material, how will you explain to an employer that you do not know what you appear to have mastered? My question is typically followed by a student's blank stare.

Hi Judy. Pizza is a good thing!

But ocean cams are too dark to see anything now. Only an occasional headlight on the traffic cam near Candy.

Hoda, thank you for your input on the education issue. How very disturbing that you would rated based on socializing with the parents and students. ABSURD! There oughta be a law! One apparent difference here is that teachers are NOT well paid....it's a crying shame, too. But, oh, yes....the standardized testing begins at grade 3 in WV, too.

Judie, excellent point you made to your students about what an employer would expect.

So...no visit to our nest? Maybe in the AM.

Lolly said...

Hi sll! Have caught up reading the blog. Took a muscle relaxer today and have been out of it! My back is really out! Feel like someone has taken a bat to the middle of my back. Groan.....why now?

Dana and Kay, so, so sorry that it did not work out today.

stronghunter said...

I like your response to the question about teachers, Hoda. Yes, schools are very political places and measuring teaching ability is very subjective.

If an administrator has a friend who wants your job, you can be in a lot of trouble. Not all administrators are ethical. Yes, that might happen in other jobs too, but that does not make it fair. And it isn't the way to improve teaching.

If one teacher has an honors level class and another teacher has an average level class, it is not fair to compare the teachers based on test scores.

And you had better believe the students will use whatever they can against you if they think they can control grading, etc. Not all students operate that way, but some do. And so do some parents.

At my school, teachers were not allowed to test their own students on the SOLs. We were told that the reasoning was that students who had something against a teacher might try to claim that the teacher had tested inappropriately.

We were also told that if a student asks a question during testing, we were to answer loudly enough that others around could hear, so that students would not think we were cheating.

Teacher tenure is a measure of protection against these problems. No, poor teachers should not be retained. And tenure should not protect them.

stronghunter said...

So sorry that Dana and Kay did not get together today.

Lynne2 said...

oh geez Lolly so sorry about your back. Hopefully you'll feel better in the AM! BTW, I haven't put up the stinkbug trap yet...going to wait until I see more. Maybe the rain and wind will wash most of them away!

Speaking now on education at the kindergarten level. Teacher I taught with for 14 years was awful!! She is intelligent, likable, but she did not put any effort into teaching. I can tell you some horror stories, but how do people know she was not doing her job? One very dear friend knew the situation from what I had said. This person became our principal and she could or would not do anything. I found it very frustrating. Also, this situation was also one of the reasons I retired early at age 56.

Haven't read everything, but see prayers are needed for Nilla and Chris.

Found out SSon, Dennis, went to Pt. Lookout today for camping & will come home Sat. That sounds more reasonable!
Heard SIL called this AM. He was flying home from Brazil to TX & called from his stopover in Detroit!!!!! DUHHH No wonder tickets are so high!

Wanda, glad Karla is getting out of storm area & hope everyone down there will be safe.
IRENE, GOODNIGHT--GO AWAY!!
Altho Sat. should be OK until PM, they're not letting any canoes/kayaks go out at Park, as all our real boats were taken out of the water! There would be no rescue boat if needed. Depending on what happens, we may close early. Sunday def. closed. So, gotta do the do & maybe nails! ☺

Hey Lynne! I agree with you about the effects of the storm on the wild animals, birds, etc.

I wonder what they are going to do about NX and KS? Are they far enough west of the storm's wind to not worry or would they bring them inside? Those sides could cave in with heavy winds and that would be horrible.

Hurricane Hazel Story:

I do remember Hazel. It did not hit us too hard in the part of NC where I lived, but it hit parts of the state badly. A guy I went to college with told the story of Hazel and what happened to him when he was a kid in elementary school. Hazel hit while he was in school. When the storm stopped, officials sent the children home without realizing that they were in the eye of the storm. Kids were on their way home when the storm hit again.

I have a hard time imagining such a thing happening, even then. At least we have better forecasting and better educated school officials now.
