Friday

Afternoon thread. Here's a message from a biologist friend:

"Hi all, just wanted to report that I saw four eagles, one mature and three juveniles, flying in a line right over Shepherd University and over the new solar house- heading west and very low. Several students saw them too. It was great! Don't know if they were our NCTC birds - no way to tell. Perhaps it was one of our parents and the eaglets from this year flying to their summer roost? Craig Koppie said that it could be or that this is the time of year juveniles from other years at NCTC (under 4-5 years old) and also eagles from other areas are moving around and looking for nesting/ territory sites. "

great news Steve, thanks so much.... I will see you again on the 18th. coming fron California.

Anne-Marie said...

Red are you coming?

Red said...

Nope, Anne Marie, I can't make it this time. And it sure sounds like this will be the best open house ever.

Anne-Marie said...

I am picking up my brother and his wife in Ohio and we are coming together. a road trip this time of year should be beautiful.

Red said...

Yes, Very beautiful. Are you flying part way? I have driven from Alabame to LA and back twice but that was years ago. Don't think I would want to now.

Anne-Marie said...

I am flying to Toledo and then we are driving. I was going to put it off until next year and then thought better of it.

Anne-Marie said...

Red last year I flew into Dulas with my grand daughter and drove to WV and ten to Williamsburg andthen to the air port again. After than nothing could scare me.

Red said...

Ha ha. I know what you mean.

Anne-Marie said...

I thought LA was bad. At least its an organised mess.LOL. It rained in Maryland and I have never been in rain like that before. I couldnt see the lines in the road. I pulled off the road and sat there until the flood left. Its funny now but it wasnt then.

Red said...

Yes, Unless you are familiar with our "gulley washers" they can be frightening.

Thanks, STEVE for the New Thread and the news about the Eagle Sightings...

I bet they are from the NCTC Family...

Good Friday afternoon, Everyone.
It's not too late to WEAR RED

magpie said...

SISSY - caught the Sea Eagles playing around in the nest very early this morning too, around 12:45 am our time...makes it?? around 7:45 their time?

Glad they are coming around again.

Sure wish I had seen the Hoody Party!

xo

Red said...

I've only seen one hoody at a time there. I missed the party too.

magpie said...

I just put five more pictures on the Sea Eagles album on the Momsters page....including two Hoody pics on too and one of a speedboat this morning...

I've seen as many as Three, RED, but never four like our folks saw yesterday.

TTFN - gotta move away from the desk for a little bit.

movin said...

Again, you might have seen it, but there's a new update to Mason's Journal this afternoon.

YES, MOVIN...BUT THANKS FOR THE REMINDER!

magpie said...

Question: Did anyone capture a picture of the Hoody Party and if so can you send it along?

Thanks !

Now, Really, TTFN...

magpie said...

Darn It! I was not truthful!

ISS ill be out starting Saturday for the next six days... at least, hereabouts, in the evening.

And the Baby Moon will be one day older, higher, and bigger tonight...and everyday hereafter..

CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR THE REPORT OF THE NCTC AND CLARION VISIT !!
Will have to catch it after my Long Panda Nap...

xo

movin said...

Interesting sighting from Steve's biologist friend...

I doubt it was all 3 juvies and one of our pair at this late in the season.

It was probably migrants, maybe trying to sample some of that good fishing on the Potomac ... Liberty could pick up some change guiding fishing groups in the off season.

Hahaha.

NORMA:
I forwarded the Yellow Warbler story to my naturalist guru up at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute in New York, he reported back:

" Millions of birds are killed each year that way, especially by
skyscrapers and communication towers with lights on them. There are new cell phone towers being erected all over the place around here, it's a wonder there are any birds left at all."

It's not a Bird's World, is it?

Good Night, All...Catch you before midnight...Enjoy your week-end. By the way, WHAT IS A "WEEK-END"?

Wasn't that fly in gorgeous. I got it at least I think I did. Working on it now. Still one beautiful eagle in the nest :)

Red said...

Guess I was sleeping and missed them both. :(

deb said...

I still have one, Red! Glad you got it, Glo. It was very pretty. I don't suppose our visitors are still at the nest??

Red said...

Guess my cam was hung. I reloaded and now I got one eagle. Thanks

NatureNut said...

WOW, what exciting news--seeing 4 eagles!!

Glad I checked front page before shutting down here!!
Later ;>)

Red said...

I guess I cannot leave my cam on all day and expect it to be correct. I'll start reloading it after an hour or so now.

deb said...

I left mine on all day today and I think that is why I lost the fly in. I was rewinding to get it and RP shut down on me.

Something sure has our eagles attention, looking all around.

Glo, what a great capture! Thanks and you did an inspiring musical annotation, too! Who was doing the most work? Belle?? The nest is really evolving. Hope the winter winds don't mess it up too bad..they'll be doing nestorations every day if it does!!

hedgie said...

Red, like I told Norma, if your plans happen to change, come on up and join us for the fun weekend!!

Thanks Hedgie. I wish I could.

Friday, October 3
Lun Lun’s time away from her cub up to now has mainly been to either eat or eliminate. Now, as the time away increases, her breaks also include sleeping away from her cub. Sometimes she just rolls over leaving the cub nearby. Other times she moves father away and rests just outside of the nest box. Just the other night, Lun Lun spent 40 minutes sleeping on her own while her cub snoozed quietly in the nest box. At this stage in the cub’s development, a wild giant panda mother would also start spending more time away from her cub just as Lun Lun has. A wild mother may have the need to forage further away from the den, and as the cub gets older will spend increasing amounts of time away.

The cub’s weight yesterday was 1202 grams.

LOL well Hedgie I am not sure who was doing the most work in yesterdays video capture. Myguess would be Belle but I am not at all for sure.

The nest seems to be a busy place again tonight :)

magpie said...

We have Eagles in our Nest...

magpie said...

Whoa, not sure how long they were there, but first Belle left, and now Liberty just flew out..

magpie said...

GLO - did you see them? Anyone else?

glo said...

Tonight I am making a Pelican Movie LOL. I found myself just in time for a Pelican Convention at the Marina today. I had brought my camera along just to well ya know start practicing a little for eagles coming in late next month.

Not looking forward to winter so much but always look forward to eagles.

rocky and rita racoon are back

floralgirl said...

yup, candy corn ....

MITS said...

Megan, why do they cover your fire hydrants in your town.....I understand why they attach a pole at the top, in case of snow, but the plastic looks like the kind they put around young trees?

floralgirl said...

We have been wondering that for months... they have been covered for a while, it would appear they are not working...

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Oh Mits that is so funny. My sister in law and her ex-husband are Rocky and Rita.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

I have to say this Rocky and Rita look much friendlier.

MITS said...

oh dear.....hope there will be no fires???? I thought the pole at the top was so a snow-plow would not hit it as it was cleaning the street

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Oh, did I say that out loud!!

MITS said...

lol...Sissy

MITS said...

I didn't hear you:)...off to watch Numbers...bbl

floralgirl said...

Yes, the pole is for that purpose, but the bags make no sense.
Now I am humming Rocky racoon...

paula eagleholic said...

paula eagleholic said...

Ya'll must have worn poor Jo out...haven't seen her on here at all this evening :)

MITS said...

I don't know where she is:)

MITS said...

she might be getting her notes together......

floralgirl said...

What?? Rocky Raccoon- it's a Beatles song...
Now somewhere in the black mining hills of Dakota
There lived a young boy named Rocky Raccoon
And one day his woman ran off with another guy
Hit young Rocky in the eye Rocky didn't like that
He said I'm gonna get that boy
So one day he walked into town
Booked himself a room in the local saloon.

Rocky Raccoon checked into his room
Only to find Gideon's bible
Rocky had come equipped with a gun
To shoot off the legs of his rival
His rival it seems had broken his dreams
By stealing the girl of his fancy.
Her name was Magil and she called herself Lil
But everyone knew her as Nancy.
Now she and her man who called himself Dan
Were in the next room at the hoe down
Rocky burst in and grinning a grin
He said Danny boy this is a showdown
But Daniel was hot-he drew first and shot
And Rocky collapsed in the corner.

Now the doctor came in stinking of gin
And proceeded to lie on the table
He said Rocky you met your match
And Rocky said, Doc it's only a scratch
And I'll be better I'll be better doc as soon as I am able.
Now Rocky Raccoon he fell back in his room
Only to find Gideon's bible
A Gideon checked out and he left it no doubt
To help with good Rocky's revival.

I bet you all thought I was still trying to find my way out of all those back streets in S'town! I even found Princess
Street!
The trip as you have heard from others was very worthwhile and most of all Fun!
Gift Shop at NCTC will be well stocked for eagle trinkets. Menu has been selected and will be published to those attending - we had to trim the menu for the chef to serve close to 40 at the same time with different requests.
I was able to get a Mason's Jar just in case anyone cares to donate to the Ellsworth Family's Medical Expenses.
It was funny that in order to get that jar it seemed like I was going to need to sign my life away - at least show proof of ID - BUT then when I mentioned Megan Webber - Gina at the Good Shop said Oh, Megan! I finally said the right thing at the right time!

Security Guard should have let all of our group in due to emailing Steve our names and him giving them to security. Open House does not (at least last year) check license as you entered nor did you send in names up front.

The room will be more then ample at the Clarion. I told them it could be
less then 40 - said it was ok.
