I don't know if my heart can take it when they are all over the ledge. Hopefully the live feed will be up on the eaglets and that will keep me busy.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

No doubt on the sigh. Our live feed is back up. I love watching them move around the nest. Still grateful for the stills when the live feed is down but love watching them in action.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Daddy just came in with something and I thought one of them was going to knock the other out of the nest fighting for it. Made my heart fall for sure!!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

It looks like a branch they were fighting over!! Go figure.

I so glad that all three babies are alive and doing well.

Thanks so much for this webcam! I love tracking the progress of the eaglets. Also, thank you for the update on George and Martha. I got the biggest smile on my face when I read that they were reunited! I didn't know that eagles could find their way back home. I'm so happy for them!

I have watched on and off since the eggs were laid. Alot of down time; affected seeing them as they are growing. Still a wonderous site. I watched Wednesday as the baby falcons got bans of different colors put on their legs. Question why don't the eaglets get banned. I know that the men climb several high places to ban the baby falcons, so why don't we ban eaglets? Thank you for the site hopefully one day West Virginia will pay for sound and help you all out more there at the Conservation Center to show the world and let them hear the sound of the calls and chippers of the eaglets. Thanks again. I'll be watching......West Virginian Gal

5:35pm Jo-MD Hi-WV Gal,
Steve gave us a simple explanation when we asked the same question concerning the banding of our eaglets. He stated that the 'eagle expert' said there are so many pairs of eagles in our area that there was not any need to keep count. The banding had been done in order to get the eagle off the endangered list.
Sharon: concerning Martha - I went out on an errand & bought the newspaper.I didn't have time before I left the house to view the Wash-Post site. Those bridge construction workers really deserve the praise.

Thanks for your continued comments. We were talking today about plans to celebrate Rachel Carson's 100th birthday next year.

Carson, the most famous of FWS employees, wrote Silent Spring in the early 60's and the book opened the eyes of the general public to the hazards of persticides recklessly used in the environment. Carson took a lot of abuse for her book. She was attacked relentlessly by those who promoted rampant use of pesticides.

Anyways, we agreed today in our conversation, that these five eagles, let alone any bald eagles, would not be here today if not for Carson's call to restrict the use of DDT. The Bald Eagle would have gone extinct at the hand of man.

Thank goodness for her insight and efforts to save these birds.

PS, the wingspans do look close to six feet.

Ut Oh its after 9 pm looks like another spider is weaving a web in front of the camera..lol Its really moving up and down in front of the camera, busy busy..lol

Mema Jo said...

9:03pm Jo-MD Looks as though the spider is going to be weaving his web this evening! Did anyone see a late evening feeding? or are they going to bed hungry.

NillaWafer said...

No Jo i have been watching all evening and saw no food brought in. One of the parent birds flew in but didnt stay long, so i suppose this is the coaxing done by parents? There was alot of wing flappin going on this evening also. I am just glad the cam is working again. Watching the falcons in Harrisburg also, they sure got fed earlier a pigeon it looked like. Have A Great Evening

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

These spiders need to go away. They are blurring the lens. Thanks, Steve, for the information on Rachel Carson. What a dedicated woman!! Six feet wing spans -- my, my, they are growing and growing. Unbelievable that they could go from 3-inch eggs to a 6-foot wingspan in a little over 2 months.

Mema Jo said...

9:38pm Jo-MD Thanks for confirming what I thought, Nilla. I am going to be away tomorrow 11:30am to 1:30pm. I just might miss a great event!
Sharon: you better stay glued to the live cam tomorrow * keep the Blog updated... Maybe we can hope the video will run over the weekend like it did one other time. I'll be checking the Blog as soon as I get home tomorrow!
I am going to check on the nest around midnight tonight.....Night Flight still is on my mind.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Jo, I will, as always, stay glued to the live cam and keep the blog updated. I don't know how I get my work done but somehow I manage. I am really grateful my job involves a computer all day so I don't have to miss anything.

NillaWafer said...

Ok checking in 1 more time before leaving for the night, I am off work next 5 days but will be checking in also from time to time... Prolley alot of times..lol Ya'll Have A Wonderful and Safe Holiday Weekend, just hope i dont miss anything!!! Nilla

These birds are growing fast and soon will be flying off.... Are there plans to band them?

I just recalled that I haven't seen bands on either of the parents though.

Mema Jo said...

10:44pm Jo-MD Hi Jim - Look up at my comment around 5:35pm on today's blog about what we have been told about not having to band the eagles.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Friday, 7:28 a.m. All seems pretty quiet on the home front this morning. Live feed is off right now. Haven't seen breakfast yet this morning. Will keep an eye out for that.

Mema Jo said...

8:00am Jo-MD Very exciting but also nerve-racking feelings today. I keep looking in the background for the adults but you can tell by the eaglets head movements that something is going on above & around them. I am thankful that the storm & rain forcasted didn't hit, at least not yet. Going to be an interesting day - just hope the live feed comes up soon & stays up throughout the weekend!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I will watch as closely as I can. Makes me nervous. Really don't want to miss that first flight. I wish we could save the video some way (if we get it back). I think NCTC will save it and maybe post it after it happens. I was just watching the falcons. Adult brought food to the far end of the ledge and 3 of them went down to eat. They are so cute and fluffy.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I would be game to buy one!!

Mema Jo said...

8:27am Jo-MD I might even consider buying 2! It is going to be almost impossible to be watching at the right moment - I wonder if both of the oldest are going at the same time? I don't really think that Spunky's feathers are ready. I wonder why we haven't seen any 'branching' - just flights from one side of the nest to the other. I hope that is enough to prepare them for the flight!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Me too, Jo. Too bad we don't have a volunteer group like the falcons to retrieve them if they get in trouble. I bet that would be fun, trying to catch one of them, considering their wing span is already wider than I am tall!!

Mema Jo said...

9:11am Jo-MD Hey Sharon, Give me a date & a time & I'll stand under that Sycamore tree with you. Together we should be able to handle it! Problem is that I think BigBoy & Inbetween are going at the same time. Don't know what we would do then.

Jo, I wish we could. I know I am really dreading the first flight for all of them because I will be sitting here waiting for them to come back and if one of them doesn't, it is going to be a heartbreaker for all of us. I have to keep reminding myself that everything happens for a reason and God is in charge!!

Anonymous said...

When did the first eaglet leave the nest? Do they come back once they have fledged?

movin said...

Thanks, Jo, I did read your comment about the lack of need to band the eaglets... How will they know the sex of the birds?

I want to go on record stating the "Big Guy" is actually a "Big Gal," and that Mr-In-between is a male. The littlest eagle might turn out to be either, being a full week behind in growth.

I wonder if mom or dad might be sitting on top of the cam and that is what is causing the interference for the past several minutes.

glo said...

Ok Well I have followed off and on, and this morning I only see two on the delay cam. I think one of them is out there spreading his/ok probably her wings. "Spread your wings and fly" Oh and "Come back and report to us!!!!" Please.

glo said...

Scares me for the little one who has had about 10 less days of food etc to even get ready to fly. :-( Will a parent stop by with food again now for the younger one(s)

Anonymous said...

Ok- I have not posted yet but I have been watching the babies since they were eggs- I only see two of the babies this am and in my yard is what looks like one of the babies! I live very close to the area they are- questions- how far can they fly at first?? Thanks!

glo said...

In your yard...as in on the ground...on a branch..is she ok. More more!!!

glo said...

Is anyone getting live feed. tried about 10 min ago but no feed

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I saw the 3rd one at the tree trunk just a minute ago. I don't think anybody has fledged yet. Glo, it is good to see you back on here. I think the parents will continue to feed the ones that have not fledged yet. Otherwise, that could get ugly. I sure do wish the live feed would come back up so we could see them in action.

Anonymous said...

Ok- first it was on the ground and then it flew a little ways but still on the ground- and then my daughter went to take pictures of it and it flew into a tree. Now we don't see it. Could it have possibly been the baby?? Oh my, now I wish we would have taken a picture when it was so close- the pictures she has are fairly good but it would have been really cool to have gotten them when she was only 20' from my back door!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Now you can clearly see all three of them. Not gone anywhere yet!!

glo said...

Sharon I've been peaking in, frustrated for all of you/us last weekend. Oh I am such a chicken. Excited, sad, hopeful, but ya know its kinda like raising a kid and not showing up for the graduation so here I am except that I have to go out htis morning for like 3 hours OOPPS lol there's number 3. They are all there

glo said...

But I don't think the 3rd one showed up by the tree trunk. Looks like it just appeared on the edge of the nest. maybe it did head for a branch and returned...that would be cool.

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Steve, Steve, where are you? We need this live feed really, really bad!!! Help us!!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Sorry, Steve. I forgot that it is not scheduled until 11 a.m.

Mema Jo said...

10:14am Jo-MD Humans wear signs saying, "I'll work for food". Our babies have a sign that says, "I'll fly for food" !! There is a rain shower here (MD) at this time. It would be 2 strikes against them if they had to take a First Flight in the rain. I did email Steve & asked him NOT to leave for his long weekend unless there was a clear picture on the Cam & hopefully that the live feed would be coming up.
SEX: It's anyone's guess! I feel BigBoy is a guy (due to his size) & that Inbetween is a gal(due to her size) & that little Spunky is a gal (due to her agressvie behavior). NCTC said our guess is as good as their's because noone is going to climb the tree & measure their beaks!
Backyard Visitor: You gave my heart a jolt - Was it all black? Keep the camera handy.
I need to leave for 2 hours! Will read the Blog as soon as I returned.
Glad to hear from you GLO - I bet your little one is growing!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Yeah, Glo, how is the baby? I think about you all often! Jo, I will keep an eye out while you are gone. Will report any happenings. I have to work sometime during this though. :)

Fraps.com This is a program that will capture the video from the flights. It is free if you just get the 30 secs version. It would give you something to look at between now and 11 am. LOL It works great. Once installed and running you hit f9 for vidoe and hit it again to turn it off, although it will automatically turn off at 30 secs. You hit f10 for stills. Just found it last week while watchng another eagle site where lots of people are using it. it does save pretty large files though so clean up and delete anything you don't want or copy to a cd. Kind of fun.

Yes, it was all black- I am not sure how much you would be able to tell from the pictures we did take. Since we live on the river I am thinking that she/he flew right up the river and ended up here. I do not know- I have seen the mommy/daddy fly over before so maybe it was- sigh....

Re: "Jim, Are the females the largest in the Eagle family? I know they are for the Falcons."

Yeah, Suzanne, I believe the female is larger in all hawks and eagles... Something about the female having to fly carrying more weight owing to their egg making organs and the eggs themselves; so they have longer wings, etc, etc.
