How Big are They Now?

One of our blog readers, Jo from Maryland, sent me this photograph from the Blackwater NWR eagle site. She asked are our eaglets this big now?

It is tough to gauge their size on the cam. Our eaglets are a bit smaller than the one pictured, we're guessing this Blackwater NWR bird is a week or two older than our oldest eaglet.

I wish we could hold our babies like that. That would be just too cool. Steve, approximately when do you think that our big boy will take his first flight?

First flights are 11 or 12 weeks after hatching.

Boy, there is a whole lot of flapping and jumping going on today. I love to watch them doing that. I just get scared that they will not stop when they get to the edge of the nest. Haven't seen mom and dad today though. I bet the babies are getting a little hungry. I swear it looks like they bicker back and forth between each other just like kids. Love it, love it. Thanks for the info, Steve.

Regarding that picture of the man holding the eaglet. That is Dr. Peter Sharpe from the Institute for Wildlife Studies out in California. He's doing pretty amazing work restoring the eagle population at the Santa Catalina Islands. You can check it out here and see more information about him and the eagles (and foxes) he works with: http://www.iws.org/Photos%20and%20Video.html
