Sloth Bear Update—April 2009 It’s time to say goodbye to our little bear. Balawat, our three-year-old sloth bear, left the Zoo on April 29. He is joining a female sloth bear from the San Diego Zoo at Akron Zoo.
Sloth bears are governed by the Species Survival Plan (SSP) program, which manages breeding in order to maintain a genetically diverse zoo population. Balawat is the result of a breeding recommendation from the Sloth Bear SSP, and the SSP has recommended we send him to Akron to be paired with the San Diego female, who was determined to be a good match for him.
At three years of age, Bala is certainly ready to venture out on his own and start his new life. His keepers will miss him very much but are also excited for him to start the next chapter of his life. Read the rest of the update.
In the wild, sloth bears are found in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. They have a slightly longer snout than other species of bear, and they use it along with their lips to create a vacuum-like seal to suck up insects from holes, cracks and crevices.
Here at Asia Trail, Merlin and Hana will hopefully be starting the next chapter for sloth bears at the Zoo. Hana recently started showing interest in Merlin again, and they have been spending time together during the day. You can find them together in the yard most days now and we are hoping when Hana comes into estrus (anytime between May and August) that she and Merlin will breed again.
That's too bad PAULA!---surely they will show it again!---Will watch----PAULA---RAMPS are used in every dish they serve----except ham---in meatloaf though---(mark the date on your cal)---ho!
Well, I took over 500 photos of that osprey eating a fish behind our house and I didn't really like any of them. The light was just terrible, the sun (what there was of it) was behind the osprey for all the best angles. Here are the best of the lot:
Watching the PA PERGRINE FALCON!!---BLESS HER HEART!----She is alone with all 5 under her---windy & thundering---kept checking for DAD & CALLING----but no DAD!!!---
I'm hoping that osprey makes a habit of eating in that tree. I'd love an opportunity to try again under better lighting conditions. She didn't seem to mind my presence at all.
BOB---would you choose?---please---frame it too!---She loves CARDINALS!!---I like #1--line 2---& the 2 on line 4 are great!!----HOPE TO GET EMAIL FIXED SOON!
Message sent through Momsters' Email: Mark your calendar & Plan for a Sycamore Nest Visit!
It's that time of the 2009 Eagle Season to plan our visit to the nest at NCTC - Shepherdstown, WV. Our eaglet is 7 weeks old and at 11 - 13 weeks the first flight could occur. With that in mind - Saturday May 23rd 10:00 am
NCTC will NOT be open for classes that weekend which is Memorial Day. That means that we would not have the cafe or the Gift Shop available to us. HOWEVER the Eagle Express with Capt Gene and First Mate Wanda will be there for us and will be serving lunch! We can all drive into NCTC and meet the Eagle Express in a designated parking lot and then all go over to the Nest Tree. Dinner arrangements are being made by First Mate Wanda. She will be notifying you of the place and time in order to get our head count. I need to submit the list of names to NCTC for entry at the Guard House of all those with intentions of coming to our Annual Event! Please email me personally and also ask any questions or concerns you have. jo_lennox@hotmail.com
Reminder: If you are not able to attend on this date, remember that any day you would want to come to the nest that I and other local yocals would join you!
Norma - Let me check what I have and then I'll post a link for a sample of what I think might work (some of these are not quite in focus and I need to make sure I still have the originals). I've also gotten better with Photoshop so I can probably brighten up and sharpen what I have a little more than what you see in that gallery. Did you have a size in mind?
We have a mourning dove nest up in a huge pine tree in a vacant lot between here and Sissy's. Saw both at the nest and one flew off. One was laying on the nest when I came back by. Don't know if there are babies yet or just eggs.
Hey, Norma, the Nature show IS being repeated here.... 3xtomorrow plus Sat. MN!!! Set my recorder!!! I was looking under wrong title last night....I put in Eagles of Mull instead of NATURE!!! TY. It's on the DC PBS station.
Just had two goldfinches playing out in the driveway...couldn't get a decent pic through window...even full-zoom they barely show against the gravel....they should have been in the red mulch!
Are you playing around with recording, Lynn? Best advice I can offer is play with it all the time...just for the practice....that way when you really want to record something...you can!
Hey to all eagle buddies! Thanks Mema Jo for the link to the audio. That was pretty neat. I'm just logging in to the site. Have been down and out today. Can't wait to talk to everyone and watch that beautiful critter of ours!
HI, EVERYBODY! Boy, it's been a crazy weekend. My computer did 11 Windows updates on Friday morning, and there's been nothing but software incompatibility issues ever since! I hope most of them are ironed out now. Poor Hidey looks kinda soggy this morning-- guess it really rained hard there! She looks much bigger to me today, though. Amazing how she grows so much practically overnight! Talked to the kids in TX yesterday, and they got 6" of rain in 8 hours! That was pretty crazy. Have been concerned about our momma hummer-- I think she's abandoned her nest and started another one in a new location. She still comes to the feeder, but hasn't been sitting on the original nest yesterday or today. The wind blew the branch low enough for me to see inside the nest, and no eggs there. The black-crowned night herons have a nest much, much higher in the tree, almost directly above the hummer nest, and maybe their noise, and their poop-shoots, have discouraged her. There are a bunch of white poop stains on the leaves right above the hummer nest. I'll keep watching, and give you an update later. At least Momma hummer is OK! By the way, does anyone have sound on the nest cam? I haven't since last week. SoCal weather report: sun is burning through, should get to hi 70s today. My fence lizards are out & about today, and loving this weather! Well, BBL-- gotta get lunch. Hope Mits, Sharon & Mema Jo are all feeling better today! :o]
The realplayer download took several seconds to actually start, Paula, and then it cuts itself off very quickly....and it didn't record an image....just showed a picture of the blank cam image, and it's showing in RP library as an audio....HUH????? Haven't had any luck downloading SnagIt. Haven't tried any others yet. Looks like sun is shining in S'Town....not here, tho'.
Ms B - something might have gotten to the hummer's eggs, too. Hope she can nest again. They really nest several times a year, so I'm sure she will again
Hedgie - I don't think the realplayer recorder is going to work on the live feed, I think it only works on things that actually play in real player. I don't have it, I'm just guessing from what others have said last year.
Forgot to ask you... how you how you are feeling today, Mits??? Hi Bibee and MsBookworm. Still no sound on our cam, sorry to say. Hidey has been trying to get dried out!
Hi everyone. My fellow employee's and I have been watching Hidey as you call it for a few weeks now. It is so addicting. Always afraid I'm gonna miss something. C.I.S.D is watching. All we have is hawks here on Long Island. There cool to.
Well, Ricky, we don't technically know she is a female. The females are larger than the males and she seems really large to us, but there really is no way to tell at this point. It is just a guess! :)
Ricky376. We do not know if it is male or female but because of the size. Females are bigger than males. We will not know because this nest is not banded. Welcome Ricky and co-workers.
Listened to the audio from NCTC Steve was great. Had problems listening to the first one for March. Oh Steve on the one for April 21st your name is spelled wrong. It has Sreve instead of Steve.
I feel like Hidey..wet and soggy. Going out to spray plants in the garden with fish emulsion since it stopped raining for a while. Gonna smell like an eagles nest out there..
Check momsters mail...a couple of great videos posted by Mits and Jo!! And it sounds like Iris is going to try to make it for the nest visit! I haven't met her yet...hope she makes it.
I'm going to buy Megan's plants and put them in a salad. Plenty of Omega 3 for your cholesterol! Megan is a GREEN grower and her plants are probably all suitable for looks or food. LOL
Lynn, just busy today with housework that has been put aside for FAR TOO LONG! Can't work outside, so gave me the oppotunity to work inside (rather be outside).
Got to listen to the first video....they are talking about bald eagle habits, mating, history, DDT, etc. The volume is a little low...maybe if you click on the open mp3 in a new window? It might be better.
Oh, forgot to tell you my boss has a place in Delaware...and there are nesting osprey on the Delaware bay and Indian River bay...and he saw an osprey dive about 20 off the front of his boat and come up with a fish! Said it was really cool!!
Sorry had to leave just got back. Meagan you spell beautiful. Paula It got better but Steve was so much clearer. Great videos of the Pigeon Forge chick and parents. Seems to be osprey everywhere. Great. They are beautiful birds.
Jo I was just looking in on the Norfolk crew. They are so cute. Can not watch Hornby. Wind is so strong. If she gets up chick might fly out of the nest. Off to watch ball game. BBL
Just got another FONZ National Zoo Panda News: May 4, 2009 Dear Jo, We just wanted to let you know that National Zoo scientists have detected the start of the decline in urinary progestin levels in Mei Xiang. This hormone decline indicates that her reproductive cycle will be concluding fairly soon. She has been spending more time in her den and cradles objects as she would a cub. We don't know whether or not she is pregnant or experiencing a pseudo pregnancy, or false pregnancy, which is common in giant pandas. FONZ volunteers are now monitoring Mei's behavior (and manning the panda cam) 24 hours a day. Thanks so much for your interest in giant pandas and the National Zoo.
One giant Panda on Cam 2 is eating and the other giant Panda on Cam 1 is sleeping. I'll guess that the sleeping panda is Mei Xiang (I am probably wrong) I need Mits!!!

I see my first oriole over in the starling/flicker tree! Beautiful!
2 eaglets laying in the nest at BWE...looks like they cleaned up the place, LOL. Think they need to come to our nest!
Forgot to ask you... how you how you are feeling today, Mits???
Hi Bibee and MsBookworm. Still no sound on our cam, sorry to say.
Hidey has been trying to get dried out!
We still aren't ranking on beakspeak.
I don't know how that could be unless it still is counting the other page where the cam was located.
Finally stopped raining here for a while. Rain gauge had 2 and a half inches in it...
Raining AGAIN! Heading your way, Hidey.
Had to look up your black-crowned night heron, Andrea. Big bird, as I suspected!! What kind of tree is it in, and how high up??? That is really cool!
Paula, I can copy your videos over onto RP without any trouble, if that makes any sense!
Hi everyone. My fellow employee's and I have been watching Hidey as you call it for a few weeks now. It is so addicting. Always afraid I'm gonna miss something. C.I.S.D is watching. All we have is hawks here on Long Island. There cool to.
Welcome to the blog Ricky376!!
Thank you and May I ask? How does everyone know hidey is a female? Its almst bigger than one of the parents already.
Hey Sharon. Hornby nest chick is peeping and wind is terrible.
The eaglet sometimes looks larger than the parent when the eaglet is closest to the cam.
Thanks again. Learn something new every day. Cant wait till she takes off. Although then there will be not much to watch. Have a good day.
Listened to the audio from NCTC Steve was great. Had problems listening to the first one for March.
Oh Steve on the one for April 21st your name is spelled wrong. It has Sreve instead of Steve.
Hello Ceil!
Ceil is a proofreader like me! :)
Oh no...another proofreder....
Ok, Megan, did you do that on purpose? :) ☺ ☺ ☺
Ricky376, what is C.I.S.D.??? Welcome.
Hey, Shar!!
I am home from work, I planned to mow, but a little rain is passing by.
Bob, I love your Osprey photos. How wonderful that you were that close!
of cousre not... ☺
And Megan.....are you getting dried out?
Yep, bet you did do that on purpose!!!
No betting about it....sure 'nuf'!
I feel like Hidey..wet and soggy. Going out to spray plants in the garden with fish emulsion since it stopped raining for a while. Gonna smell like an eagles nest out there..
Supper time at Hornby. Love watching those babies and listening to them too.
Ugh, Megan! What does that provide for the plants? Calcium or omega fatty acids???
Check momsters mail...a couple of great videos posted by Mits and Jo!! And it sounds like Iris is going to try to make it for the nest visit! I haven't met her yet...hope she makes it.
I'm going to buy Megan's plants and put them in a salad. Plenty of Omega 3 for your cholesterol! Megan is a GREEN grower and her plants are probably all suitable for looks or food. LOL
Hi Wanda! Did you need to recuperate today??? We wondered where you were!
Lynn, just busy today with housework that has been put aside for FAR TOO LONG! Can't work outside, so gave me the oppotunity to work inside (rather be outside).
Lots of posts to read up on since I left.
Rain seems to have stopped but the clouds are so threatening!
Be right back after reading up on things.
Hidey is one wet soggy looking gal!
Got to listen to the first video....they are talking about bald eagle habits, mating, history, DDT, etc. The volume is a little low...maybe if you click on the open mp3 in a new window? It might be better.
Aha, you can right click the "open mp3 file in new window" and choose "save target as" to your computer....that might work as well.
NBG Rebels are just as wet and soggy as
Hidey!
Oklahoma site still no cams - Like Lolly said - That little one may fledge before the sunshine comes out for the cams!
Duke Farms nest is also Wet & soggy!
Parent is tenting the 3 young ones.
Decorah eaglets should be about 4 weeks old. They are alone in the nest now.
Jo I was just looking in on the Norfolk crew. They are so cute.
Can not watch Hornby. Wind is so strong. If she gets up chick might fly out of the nest. Off to watch ball game. BBL
Just saw adult fly up from the back into the tree.
A very soggy parent just arrived in the nest, as I am listening to the video Jo sent out. How Wonderful!!
Good Evening Everyone in Eagleland.
What a hairdo our eagle and eaglet has.
Soggy adult in the nest too now
Just got another FONZ National Zoo Panda News: May 4, 2009
Dear Jo,
We just wanted to let you know that National Zoo scientists have detected the start of the decline in urinary progestin levels in Mei Xiang.
I'll guess that the sleeping panda is Mei Xiang (I am probably wrong)
I need Mits!!!
Hidey and adult are not Happy Nesters!
Belle is digging up some of that stuck, soaked fluff
DEB Your turtles have been fed.
Now you have time for more pics to be put on your blog!
Boy, those audios reports from Steve are pretty cool. He snuck those in on us...thanks for the heads-up Paula
Hidey is too cute watching belle...nibbling at her feathers...looking for dinner
He finally gave up and laid down in the bowl...
BBL gonna go walk in the rain...
Hope you have had a nice day off, Margy!
The rain really doesn't deter any thing good happening!
Watch out
for the SPLIT
It is a coming soon!
Jo, just working on labels for pictures, then I will post them.
