Me again. Forgot to tell you all. MM cat Pretty. Gave me an webkinz eagle for my birthday. Have my seal, birthday eagle and eagle I won at NCTC get together on my computer desk. Lots to do. Everyone have a good day.
Looks like they changed their minds about the PA falcons.
5/28/2009 :: Banding Results At the May 27th banding event, the PGC banded four female nestlings, one male. All five of the eyases were treated for mites; all are doing well. The watch and rescue program will begin on Monday, June 8th and run through the weekend or until all of the eyases have fledged and returned to the ledge
Nest Updates Spring Update #3 - May 27, 2009 Our young eagle is preparing to fledge, and we expect this to occur in the next week or so. Keep an eye on the cam and the blog for the actual fledge date and time.
Once the eaglet has fledged, it will stay around the nest for several more weeks, so there will be plenty of time to see it coming and going from the nest
MORNIN' PAULA!---I need to check the PA SITE again!!---I had been checking---but could only see one site every time (pic of chicks together)!---no ledge, etc.!!
little tidbit I just read... How can you tell the difference between a male and female adult bald eagle? A: Visually, they look identical, but as with most raptors, the female is larger (heavier and bigger) than the male. Sometimes this is clearly visible in a pair, when you see both together at the nest, but otherwise, we are just guessing. In the hand, biologists can differentiate male versus female using two key body size measurements, the depth of the bill (beak) and the length of the hallux talon, on the rear toe. These measurements are plugged in to a neat formula developed by eagle biologist Gary Bortolotti back in the early 1980's, based on numerous measurements of eagles of known sex.
I appreciate that Ceil took the opportunity to remind us to Wear Red today and every Friday. It's a way to honor the Military Personnel....for all they do to secure and protect our Freedoms. thanks Ceil !
Ha Ha rest time suppose that little heart is a pounding too. Well I have some special company arriving in 2 days and lots to take care of. Hope your day holds some special moments.
That was interesting info on sizes, Mits....I'll help Sharon measure! We've had one shower pass through but now sun is out....would be nice if no more rain came this way!
I was sitting here addressing a card for Dustin, when I heard a puppy whining...How on earth did a puppy get into that nest! Well, I couldn't get that site brought up quick enough...and there it was, a great big whining Hidey. I've never heard that before!
MITS---I found the STORK on my BOOKMARK---It was down last time I checked!!---could see the eggs in the nest!---now it's higher up!---same site as last year!
Beak - The hook at the tip is used for tearing. Behind the hook, the upper mandible, the edge sharp enough to slice tough skin, over laps the lower, creating a scissors effect. A bald eagle's beak is a strong weapon, but is also delicate enough to groom a mate's feathers or feed a small portion of food to a newly hatched chick.
The beak of a female eagle is deeper (distance from top to chin) than the beak of a male.
everything is back to normal at NZ panda house....they have started preliminary talks on the fate of the pandas, trying to renegotiate Mei and Tians' contract which is up in 2010. Tai had already had 2 years extended on his contract, they think he will be here for a few more months, then back home to China
looked like him, Jo, but getting really hard to tell, and they keep switching Tai and Tian back and forth betwen the yards an dens....Tian has the kidney shaped eyes
Hi, gang! I'm ba-a-a-ck! Kinda zoomed thru recent blogs to get a bit caught up.
Lynn, you may assist me in the OR anytime! We'd undoubtedly make a great team! About the Kangaroo Paws-- I'll try to get a picture of them for you. They're native to Australia, and very exotic looking!
Deb, amen to your Rachel Carson quote!
Thanks, everyone, for the encouraging words regarding my return to school!
Sharon, don't worry-- I'm TOTALLY determined to complete this!!!!! I've got tunnel vision, with my eyes on the goal!!!
Everyone please keep me in your prayers, especially regarding finances. Haven't heard about unemployment in a week now-- the jury's still out on whether they'll continue it for me! Need to get a part-time job, but the college recommended waiting a bit and developing a study routine first. Hubby's near apoplexy regarding the situation! Pray for him, too! (He called in and stayed home again today-- too tightly wound; needs to chill!)
Say, has anyone heard anything about Odin regarding the fishing line caught on his foot? What a nightmare situation! (Prayers that it works out OK for the whole family!) Sure sounds like they're keeping a really close eye on the situation, much to their credit!
Is it starting to rain at the nest? Sure sounds like it! Somebody get an umbrella to Hidey, please. Ran out and got a couple of pictures of the Kangaroo Paw. Will download them right away!
Hi, Megan!!! Busy gal....we miss you! Thanks for link to the stork nest, folks....it's the same one I had that wasn't working at all so had deleted it...good to see it back up, even tho' view is not as good. Andrea.,...tell hubby to suck it up...that you have made a good decision that will pay-off in the long run! I always thought it sucked that UE gets stopped because you try to learn something to get a job! DUH!
Glad to hear the 4 o'clocks are blooming, Jo- one of my favorite plants. Hello Norma and Hedgie:) Have the cam sound turned down now, has that dratted hum again.
Unemployment benefits...what are those??- don't even get me started. We just don't qualify, according to the state of MD. So far here we have found no benefit to unemployment....ha ha ha- get it...I crack myself up, or else I will go crazy from worry.
Humid day out there, grabbed a quick lunch, back to work. Fridays are always too busy. Hoping for some rain this afternoon to help water all the plants I put into the ground the past two days. We only got 1/4 inch of rain yesterday. Later gators!
Hey Paula:) Yeah, we missed all those showers yesterday, just kinda passed right by us- but 1/4" is better than nothing. Could use a little more, cause I don't have a lot of free time to water on Fri-sat-Sun. CU
MORNIN' MOVIN'JIM!---What's HAPPENING at your place?---Poor 'BABY' in the nest sounds so sad---then you hear this LOUD YELL!---Will be hard when she FLEDGES!!!
Lynn, this is a touchy situation with the UE-- haven't told them I'm in night school for fear they'll stop payments. They want me to show 3 employers/wk that I've contacted, with e-mail/phone/addresses/contact name, and if I get a job offer I'm capable of doing, I HAVE to take it, or no UE!!! Oh boy! Have wondered if I tell them I'm in NIGHT school, looking for a part-time DAY job, whether they would continue paying. Scared to ask them! If I apply now for SS, will only get roughly half what I would if I wait till I'm 71 (in 8 years!).
Look at it this way, Andrea. If you start collecting your SS now and say it is $500 a month=$6000 a year. Over a period of 8 years (til you are 71) the total amount would be $48,000. That is like loosing $48,000 if you wait til age 71:(
Wow, Hidey!!! OK, I'm awake now! Guess I turned up the sound too much. Hubby's gone to Wal Mart-- better get my shower & shampoo done before he's back. Plans for the day are up in the air, but better be ready to go just in case! BBIALW. Oh, by the way, both my school books for Med classes have online student support, and you can get questions answered, and they'll help you study, etc.! One book has a DVD with it. Pretty cool; didn't have that when I was at Fullerton College way back when! Really better scoot now--BBL! :o]
Wanda, I am really on the same page as you, I think. If I were to collect SS, it would relieve the $$ situation a bit, and I could really concentrate on studying, instead of looking for a J-O-B. In 18 months or 2 years I could be earning a decent living, AND collect SS! Will have to talk it over with Hubby when he's not so tightly wound (hopefully, really soon!) Well, better hit the shower before Hubby gets home! Back in a bit...
Andrea, remember that you are limited on how much you can earn when collecting SS until you hit age 70, I think! Something like for every $2 earned, they take away $1 of SS.
MS BOOKWORM-----May I give you my opinion---I would not decide anything until you go to the SS OFFICE & DISCUSS IT WITH THEM!!----make an appt. today---check your options with them---THIS IS IMPORTANT!
I know there is a great deal of action at our nest, but some had asked about Odin at Loch Garten...seems he is pretty much free of the fishing line, maybe injured one wing feather in the process. Mother there is now feeding two pretty big chicks, and one rather puny one.
Mema Jo - yes I do transcribe at home. I've been in the field for over 25 years now, but it is a dying trade at this point with all the "voice activation" programs taking over our jobs.
Hidey is being so vocal today!! Hasn't stopped since Belle (I think it's Belle) got there. Getting quite disrespectful too! lol
it was fascinating --- with hidey hovering over fish, parent went over to the other edge of the nest & just sat. hidey then flap-flew over there, snapped a little, and waited while parent went over to fish. then walked over to parent and fish, and they worked back to this feeding going on now.
Well I am impressed and love the way this is ending actually. I am always impressed when I watch this pair with their young!!! Up on a close by branch has gone the parent.
Yes!!... I've noticed that often when mom or dad leave the nest, Hidey mimics the "take-off".... however, in wind like this that might not be a good idea Hidey!
yw, Mema Jo! and thanks, magpie. i've been watching, and reading comments as i manage. it is exciting, isn't it? so close to taking off, the not-so-little one!
What a treat today. Couldn't believe what happened at lunch time. Thought Hidey wasn't going to share at all. I grabbed my heart when he almost flew away. I dread the day when he's gone. I'll have to find another nest to watch. My daughter says I'm addicted to the computer for sure now. Bye for now. Going to Lake Wateree for the next day and will have to watch SC birds for a while. Love, Gwen
Really breezy at the nest. I noticed when we were there that there is more wind at the tree than down on the road.
Raining in Bluefield.
The takeover was quite calm. Hidey walked over to the edge and the parent snagged the food. Then Hidey came back wanting some. Wanted the food but didn't want the work that goes with it. That sounds really familiar to me! :)
That IS big fish!! Hidey has calmed down a little vocally. Maybe he/she was hungry before.
I don't know if anyone saw my post earlier, I'm looking for a good close-up picture of the tree with Liberty and Belle perched on it. I know someone has a nice size one because they showed me a few weeks ago. Does anyone have it? If so, please e-mail it to me at layniede@optonline.net THANKS!
Hidey knows it is possible to get pecked pretty good trying to get that food right now and parent knows HIdey is not starving may not be full but has had some food.
Laynie, I have been hearing transcriptionist jobs are nearing extinction for 10 years but my work hasn't slowed down at all. I think some docs will never be interested in training a computer to understand their voices.
I keep asking my family physician when he is going to start putting all that info on line but to date he only uses a laptop to forward prescription requests from the pharmacies. He still writes everything down in my file...

Good afternoon fellow Hidey fans -
Lynn, Jo, Glo,Wanda, Bookworm, Laynie, Margy, Floralgirl!
That head shot Steve put up of him/her is wonderful! Gorgeous!
Are we gonna fledge today?
Norma says she's only seen one go in the afternoon.
OK Where and who is Merryheart, Sharon?
Laynie - do you do your medical transcribing from home?
I was just looking for MerryHeart's profile! :)
Is Lib having a hissy fit?
I think the storm has reached the valley. Just heard some rumbling up there.
Do you think Lib is thinking:
"Just wait until you have your own eaglets."
OOOOhhh tug of war.
WHOA! BIG TIME! WHOA!
Never beak your parent!
that parenting in our nest right now is just awesome!!!
That was something else.
Nature in the raw! LOL
Well, we are being a little testy. I bet Lib wins this fight!
Loch Garten Update
I think Hidey is being taught to protect food as long as it takes...don't give it away or let it get stolen.
I'm thinking that it is Belle in the nest with Hidey.
I see the painful jabs a parent accepts from a young adult as it grows its own strength and courage from lessons well learned at home
Wow- a tantrum and some back talking... now Hidey wants adult to feed him.
Started to rain here, but storm went to the West.
a bite for you and a bite for me after our lesson. You did pretty good LOL
Whoa I was reading your comments and
missed the food take over by the adult.
What happened..... was it a calm take over..... Is it the same adult?
It is raining now here in the valley. Maybe it missed the nest.
Very interesting point GLO that Hidey may be being taught to protect his food.
I guess it's not always what it seems.
CH 7-ABC NEWS----WARNING FLASH FLOODS!!
Getting quite disrespectful too! lol
Looks like they've got a little sun on the next now. Always makes the bald head look so pretty.
it was fascinating --- with hidey hovering over fish, parent went over to the other edge of the nest & just sat. hidey then flap-flew over there, snapped a little, and waited while parent went over to fish. then walked over to parent and fish, and they worked back to this feeding going on now.
need food---
new game ... tug a war... with food
ohhhh.. attitude!!!
Well I am impressed and love the way this is ending actually. I am always impressed when I watch this pair with their young!!! Up on a close by branch has gone the parent.
What a miserable time to have to take a nap !
Lisa : Great time to be watching, we have missed you!
Welcome again, to all newcomers, and recent visitors, and Hello to the "old-timers."
Megan: My marigolds are taking off. Will post some pics over the week-end.
Good Night! xoxo ☺ ♥
PUT THOSE WINGS DOWN HIDEY!
Heart Failure Big Time.
Thought Hidey was going to Follow the Leader........
...will I wake up to an Empty Nest ????????
Thanks Lisa for the info to my question about missing the food switch!
GLO---I certainly agree---I think BELLE & LIBERTY are the BEST of the BEST PARENTS!!
Yes!!... I've noticed that often when mom or dad leave the nest, Hidey mimics the "take-off".... however, in wind like this that might not be a good idea Hidey!
Wow -I'm exhausted just watching that. I'm a wreck.
I think that MEI at the DC Zoo is doing her Ray Charles dance to get a treat!
oh my gosh
yw, Mema Jo! and thanks, magpie. i've been watching, and reading comments as i manage. it is exciting, isn't it? so close to taking off, the not-so-little one!
Rain has stopped - very short shower
ok not sure I cqn qatch the storm stuff argh
WOW - it was like the nest sucked him back - I thought he was gone!
Did you?
OH my... I thought "this was it"!! A running start and off the edge... and then back! I held my breath.
That was wild!
my heart gets to racing when she/he does that! i have to grab my head to contain myself.
hidey does seem to watch the grown-ups demonstrate take-off.
awfully close must be heading into wind off launch pad
Oh Layne, Glo - thanks heavens someone else saw that... scared the dodo out of me! He was out over the edge.
i'd be panting, too, bird!
Really wasn't a storm here..
Probably missed WV

eh, that link paste didn't work... :)
Hi Itl.
I don't think I've met you - me being pretty new here. Nice to meet you.
That made me nervous, too.
Like Jo or Margy said, afraid to leave the computer - I'll come back and the nest might be empty.
hi Lori. i'm pretty much a newbie, too, but i did visit the nest site a few weeks ago.
I went last weekend with the Momsters. It's hard to get to know Hidey online and not want to know more. . . everything.
Well, it's a pleasure to meet you Itl. :)
It's black and pouring buckets here now.
I am still watching... Just keeping quiet so not to disturb Hidey lol
Lori & Lisa - good to have you both on here. I think the wind sounds worst then it is... must be hitting straight at the cam.
Adult back in nest.........
Don't know what adult is checking out way up there... Hope his/her branch is still there..........
Love, Gwen
it's like they're having a conversation now.
"so, i saw you nearly took off. how was that?"
"scary! weird!"
"yeah? tell me more."
"cheeep cheep-cheep cheeep, cheep-de-cheeeeep, cheep . . ."
"well, maybe i'll take off again in a minute. keep yer eyes open, kid."
Gosh, I don't want Hidey to leave - EVER - but I don't want to miss it either.
I think the parent came back to help Hidey settle down a little bit.
or maybe help us settle down a little bit LOL
Going to get a lunch sandwich..
BBILW
Really breezy at the nest. I noticed when we were there that there is more wind at the tree than down on the road.
Raining in Bluefield.
The takeover was quite calm. Hidey walked over to the edge and the parent snagged the food. Then Hidey came back wanting some. Wanted the food but didn't want the work that goes with it. That sounds really familiar to me! :)
Justin and I went to Sissy's to eat. Meatloaf, potatoes and corn. It was scrumptious. Jus is hanging out with me today.
Its our family LOL
and a feast has arrived
Now the whole fam damily is in the nest. Wow, look at that fish.
Glo, you have some interesting observations.
Welcome back Sharon.
I always wonder if Hidey is different or thinks differently because he is an only eaglet. Hmmmm.
so far ota a feast for one LOL
"ok kid if you want soem food come and take it!!!"
Hidey is acting like his feelings are hurt . . .like he wants to be asked to come over and eat.
Whatever is doing that to the camera better not shut it down! It's clearly not the wind this time.
I think Belle flew up above the cam.
