Not sure about how long the cam will be on, this is a new web site that we are on. In the past, when the camera was working, they kept the still pics up all the time. Liberty and Belle do not leave the area. They are never really far from the nest I don't think. In November, they will start nestorations again in preparation for more eggs in February and eaglets in March.
We all go through empty nest syndrome when they leave. After they fledge, they come back and hang around the nest for a while before they leave the area. Sometimes it takes them a day or so to get back to the nest and watching their wobbly landings is funny.
I love reading all of everyones clever comments! Thanks for the update Sharon on the cam. Lori, I'm like you, I'm gonna miss Hidey too when she leaves!
As this is my first "Eagle watching", which I have enjoyed so much, can someone please tell me if what Hidey is doing is normal or if she is stuck up there? Are her cries just "chatter", or is she calling mom and dad for some help getting down? THANKS.
Laynie, I don't think Hidey is not stuck up there, just scoping out the scene. And she loves to talk. She is one of the most vocal little eaglets I have ever seen (in my limited experience of eagle watching).
I'm from Calif. and tell everyone that the two things that always make the front page of the paper here (Washington Post) it's the Redskins and Pandas!
Sissy, just not fair!!! Mei gets our hopes up, and all we get is let-down...two years in a row...Mits needs to have a firm talk with that girl!! How are you feeling this am??
I agree Lynn. I am still feeling pretty crappy. Lymph nodes are swollen and hurting, coughing my head off, chest feels like it is going to cave it, ears are hurting....
Don't you wish you hadn't asked? Sharon is sick of hearing it for sure!! This is just hanging on forever. Of course, I have only been on antibiotics 1-1/2 days. So, it will ease up soon, I am sure.
I have Norfolk up and it looks like three eaglets in the nest to me. That would be comforting news. I wonder how the biologists decide which bird will get the transmitter.
Two things - the first is I am so glad they don't track our eaglets. I would rather believe that they are free and soaring. Don't want to know the sad parts of it.
Second thing, I am also grateful that we haven't had to watch the pecking into submission of one eaglet on the other.
Thanks, Margy, for the reminder to vote for our ROBERT 'BOB' QUINN. For those who are new to our group...Bob is an excellent photographer and a very good friend of ours. He DOES have the best photo of the group that is up for vote, and he deserves our taking the time to vote for him. He does a lot to help our cause.
About the threads...you have to click on Shepherdstown eagle cam daily at the top of the page to see all the threads...maybe that's what other person couldn't see...they were only on the last thread...
This morning, scientists will attach a satellite tracking device to one of the eaglets. Perry Mathewes of Norfolk Botanical Garden will be in the Special Event Chat Room to describe the activity. Please join us at 10:00 a.m. to watch this fascinating event live on the Eagle Cam. Click here to launch chat.
Norfolk Botanical: At this point we are waiting for one climber to arrive. Dr. Watts will meet with the climber to determine who will ascend the tree to get the eaglet
Norfolk Botanical: In a moment you will see the table where staff from the Center for Conservation Biology will prepare the eaglet for the transmitter Norfolk Botanical: The media is arriving and beginning to set up. They will be to the right of the table (top in your view). Norfolk Botanical: General visitors to the garden can witness the event from Renaissance court
Norfolk Botanical: Dr Watts is currently being interviewed by a local TV station Norfolk Botanical: he is commenting that this is a little more delicate than the banding operation a month ago Norfolk Botanical: The eagles are older and can be more aggressive so the climber and biologists must be more careful
Hello everyone, This is my first eagle watch!! My husband found out about it on fox11 wvah news and told me about it. (I am a dedicated bird watcher!!) This is so cool!! I've been watching since yesterday morning and cannot get a thing done! LOL. I don't want to miss the flight!! I even took a look at her at 2AM when I could't sleep last night. Is Hidey male or female?
admin: Perry, several users have asked why only one eaglet is being fitted with the device, and how they chose which bird will get the device Norfolk Botanical: They will select the largest bird so the weight of the transmitter will have the least impact. It is not very heavy and will not affect flight, but they are looking for the least amount of impact Norfolk Botanical: I think only one bird is selected because of the cost of the project - this is a question better suited to Dr. Watts - I will try to find out.
BLESS YOU, Margy for helping out that 91 yro. My Mom says her life would be over if she didn't have someone helping her out. There are so many elderly folks out there who need just a little help and it means SOOO much!
Stevie - we don't know. I think Hidey is male because he's about the size of the male parent...others think Hidey is a female. The eaglet won't be measured or DNA tested, so we will never know. But it's fun guessing!
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts confirms that the expense is one concern and that they put only on transmitter per brood in an effort to spread the transmitters out among a wider group of eagles to better understand movements
admin: Another user asks where the parents are during this activity
Norfolk Botanical: As for the parents - as you just saw, one parent briefly returned to the nest for a moment just minutes ago. Generally during this process, the adults will circle overhead
Norfolk Botanical: This satellite transmitter is the first to be fitted on an eagle in the Chesapeake bay region and it will help CCB answer the question about where the eagles go.
Norfolk Botanical: The transmitter weighs 70g and is solar powered. It will be fitted on the bird using a harness. The harness will have enough room for the bird to grow Norfolk Botanical: By using the this transmitter they can track the bird very well - almost to the tree. Much better than 10 years ago. admin: Perry, several users have asked when these eaglets are expected to fledge Norfolk Botanical: Tim Nuckols has just arrived Norfolk Botanical: The eaglets will fledge in about a month
admin: Perry, one user asks if the public can follow the eagle's location online via this tracking data Norfolk Botanical: yes - I will see if we can get the web site listed
admin: Perry, we have had several questions about the harness, whether it is permanent and whether it is restrictive to the bird's flight and ability to fish Norfolk Botanical: The climb is about to begin
This is the best thing I've ever gotten addicted to. Love this bird and can hardly put my computer down. Thank you so much Steve. My family and friends think I've lost my mind. Gwen of S. C.
Norfolk Botanical: The harness will stay on for at least 3 years and the bird could pull of the harness Norfolk Botanical: Nathan Jones is in the bucket as it heads up to the tree
Gwen, WELCOME!! So glad you are here. My family thought the same thing when I started and now I have a sister who is more hooked than me, if that is possible. How did you find the cam?
orfolk Botanical: Once the transmitter is place you can track the eagle online Norfolk Botanical: Norfolk Botanical Gaden and CCB will have links on each web site Norfolk Botanical: for the tracking site Norfolk Botanical: also check www.wildlifetracking.org
Norfolk Botanical: The adults will circle overhead but not aggressively defend the nest Norfolk Botanical: You can see the shadow of athe adult flying overhead Norfolk Botanical: also spiders are running across the cam domes admin: Perry, several users ask if the eaglets are noisy during this activity, calling out etc. Norfolk Botanical: the eaglets are not vocalizing at this time - it certainly cannot be heard from the ground
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. watts is climbing the tree admin: Users are wondering about Nathan, and if he was the climber during the banding. Norfolk Botanical: Nate was one of 2 climbers for the banding
Staff confirmed late yesterday that Mei Xiang is not pregnant but was experiencing a pseudo, or false, pregnancy during the past several months. Zoo scientists, veterinarians, and keepers were keeping a close eye on Mei, monitoring her hormone levels and behavior, as well as conducting weekly ultrasound exams in an attempt to determine if she was pregnant.
As you may recall from previous years, female giant pandas almost always undergo a pseudopregnancy when they ovulate but fail to conceive. During a pseudopregnancy, hormonal changes and behaviors are identical to those of a true pregnancy, making it very difficult to determine if a giant panda is actually pregnant or not. This is the fifth time Mei Xiang has had a pseudopregnancy.
Had no idea that this had happened 5 times! BTW....Hughes cop has me in jail...guess I had Hidey up live for too long yesterday....drats! No chance now of watching anything live.
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts is approaching the nest Norfolk Botanical: The eagles are not very alarmed Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts is looking for the best approach to the nest Norfolk Botanical: Dr. watts is about to step in the nest Norfolk Botanical: Tim Nuckols is bringing up a bag to lower the eaglet Norfolk Botanical: The eagles are very calm
Norfolk Botanical: He is placing an eaglet in the bag - no problem Norfolk Botanical: He will secure the bag and transfer it to Nate Norfolk Botanical: The bag is getting ready to go down
Norfolk Botanical: They are gently lowering the bag Norfolk Botanical: On the ground is Reese Lukei to catch the bag Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts will descend, the other two will stay in the tree Norfolk Botanical: Reese will open the bag
Lori - an educated guess after all these years of watching. SIZE is what made me say Lib. Belle is longer. BUT to be on the safe side I usually cover myself and just say ADULT or PARENT
Wouldn't it be awesome to check and see where Hidey's been every day? I think I read that the CI eaglets locations are monitored 14 times a day - then again I can't remember what shoes I'm wearing without looking!
Norfolk Botanical: She is placing the transmitter on the center of the back Norfolk Botanical: checking fit, making sure the feathers Norfolk Botanical: this is the oldest of the 3 chicks Norfolk Botanical: He has a full crop Norfolk Botanical: She straightens the feathers out over the harness Norfolk Botanical: Correction - this is the second eaglet - HH - they think it might be a female Norfolk Botanical: Adjusting the harness to make sure it is loose enough for safe movement, but not so loose it falls off Norfolk Botanical: She is making sure the harness is centered and does not interfere with the crop Norfolk Botanical: The bird is very relaxed Norfolk Botanical: The cam is so zoomed it si hard for me to hold it steady on the eagle Norfolk Botanical: The harness is on and she is letting it relax Norfolk Botanical: The bird was actually asleep while she was fitting the transmitter - Libby had to wake the bird up to make her sit up Norfolk Botanical: to make final adjustments admin: In answer to dozens of inquiries about why this particular eaglet was chosen, here is the answer given earlier: They will select the largest bird so the weight of the transmitter will have the least impact. Norfolk Botanical: Final adjustments
Norfolk Botanical: Libby used a piece of cardboard under the strap while she uses the rivets Norfolk Botanical: the eaglet has gone back asleep Norfolk Botanical: She is about 8 weeks old
Norfolk Botanical: Reese is photographing the work up close Norfolk Botanical: Eaglet is sound asleep - makes the work easier Norfolk Botanical: Last of the rivets are put in place Norfolk Botanical: there is still some natal down on the eaglet
Hi friends! Just checking in to wish all a great day...cant stay as have a full plate at work today :(...see where Hidey and parent had an early lunch a bit ago...it looks as if Hidey has grown over nite! My heavens! And she/he is soooo talkative! And getting really 'snippy' :) Glad to see no frost in our area today...and hope the sun and spring like weather continues...Have a great day and will hopefully check back in with all later this evening...i owe i owe so off to work i go...
admin: Several users have asked if we now know the sex of all three eaglets in the nest Norfolk Botanical: The oldest and youngest were determined to be males when the banding was done last month. It appears this eaglet is female Norfolk Botanical: Libby trims off excess harness
orfolk Botanical: Libby trims off excess harness Norfolk Botanical: She is superglung the ends of the harness to keep them from fraying - cardboard is between the harness and feathers to protect the feathers
admin: WVEC.com will post a slideshow of the events later today Norfolk Botanical: She is being shown to the public and is very calm Norfolk Botanical: WE cannot see the barricade and the public from our cam Norfolk Botanical: She has spread her wings for the public admin: WVEC-TV reporter Joe Flanagan will have a report tonight on 13News. His report will also be on WVEC.com.
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts is explaining that the eagle will eventually pull the transmitter and harness off Norfolk Botanical: He is talking with the public but is turning to return the eagle admin: Perry, several users wonder if the adults are still circling above Norfolk Botanical: not at the moment - one report had them over the admin building a few minutes ago
I think we were told at one time that they didn't have a sense of smell. It was brought up when so many dead fish were in one of the nest. I'll have to verify my statement!
Norfolk Botanical: Joe Flanagin is interviewing right now Norfolk Botanical: The eaglet is going back in the bag Norfolk Botanical: It is zipped up and they will attach to the rope for the return home
No Lynn, it is what it is....really did not think she was pregnant this year, looked so much like last year....2010 is the year Mei and Tian are supposed to return to their home in China, but guess they will renegotiate their contract if they can
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts now thinks that one of the other eaglets - HE - is a female and not a male as originally thought admin: Perry we have had many many users express their thanks to you for the outstanding play-by-play description of the events, and for the work Norfolk Botanical has done to bring these eagles to the public. Norfolk Botanical: Nate went down first and is going down in the bucket. Tim will follow Norfolk Botanical: It is our pleasure - we hope everyone can come to the Garden sometime and visit Norfolk Botanical: An osprey is chasing one of the adults flying overhead Norfolk Botanical: The adults are circling closer as Nate and Tim leave Norfolk Botanical: Both adults are circling nearby admin: The complete chat transcript will be posted shortly admin: A slideshow will be online later today Norfolk Botanical: thank you everyone who logged in today admin: We have had many questions about visiting Norfolk Botanical Garden. Here is a link to their excellent Web site: http://www.norfolkbotanicalgarden.org Norfolk Botanical: They are now pulling the truck away - this will encourage the adults to return Norfolk Botanical: Tim is out of the tree Norfolk Botanical: All is calm and back to normal in the nest. Norfolk Botanical: We will monitor the audlts today. After the banding last month, they were back on the nest tree within 10 minutes of the truck leaving Norfolk Botanical: This is the eaglet with the transmitter on the front nest
Hi everyone! My name is Lynne and I have been following the US Fish and Wildlife Eagle Cam for a couple of weeks and it's SOOOO addicting! So I decided to check out the blog as well, which led me to the WVEC and lo and behold I got there just in time to see the activities this morning!
Well, that operation appears over ... and painlessly.
I guess I got my sound back too, since I heard the air horn of a truck and now I'm getting a lot of wind and static noises....
Paula, did they say if they had gotten the blood test results on the middle eaglet yet? 10 lbs. still sounds kinda in the middle as far as sex determination.
This Afternoon Sunny. Highs around 80. Southeast winds around 5 mph. » ZIP Code Detail Tonight Clear. Lows in the mid 40s. Southeast winds around 5 mph in the evening...becoming light and variable. Thursday Sunny. Highs in the lower 80s. South winds 5 to 10 mph. » ZIP Code Detail Thursday Night Mostly clear. Lows in the lower 50s. South winds around 5 mph. AMEN
Re: Suzanne's note that one eaglet was missing....
When I tuned in later this morning, and the NBG cam was working again, I saw #1 work his way all the way up the big branch to the left rear until you could only see his feet; then he "flew" beautifully to a large branch to the right and out of the frame to the top right corner.
It was a good enough flight and landing to give him his "wings" pin as a fledgling.
This has been amazing. And not only do I now watch TWO eagle cams, but I watch and owl cam, loon cam, falcon cam, heron cam, tree swallow cam....so many eggs and babies to worry about!
Hi Sequoia! I am happy to see someone who knows trees on here because I was wondering what kind of tree the eagle's nest is in at the NGB...can you tell?
I meant the one at the Norfolk Botanical Garden http://www.wvec.com/cams/eagle.htmlat NGB we were watching this morning as they put a satelite tracking device on one of the babies...it's the first time I was on that site.

I'm a newbie along with Aimeecat - but we are all here to celebrate the new found nibleness of Hidey. What a joy (s)he is.
Thanks for hosting this Steve.
♫♪♫♪ She's got a feather on her beak and she's pretty!!♪♫♪♫♪
Sharon I think I will cry my eyes out to see Hiedy leave. I'm the worst at goodbyes and it doesn't matter who or what I'm saying goodbye to.
We all go through empty nest syndrome when they leave. After they fledge, they come back and hang around the nest for a while before they leave the area. Sometimes it takes them a day or so to get back to the nest and watching their wobbly landings is funny.
We also say we get the "bird flew"!
Found ya'll! Thanks Sher for coming and getting me!!
Belle needs to bring a warm washcloth and wash that baby's face.
THANKS.
Aw, poopy turds!
Well poo about Mei!!!! That is so disappointing!!
Laynie, I don't think Hidey is not stuck up there, just scoping out the scene. And she loves to talk. She is one of the most vocal little eaglets I have ever seen (in my limited experience of eagle watching).
anything else on the NBG site. Are all of the babies there.. I have it up but cant tell
Zoo just announced that Mei is NOT pregnant........boo...what a disappointment.
Really? How cool that she is talkative. Being my first eaglet child, I'm very partial to Hidey. It's a first love kind of thing.
Oh... thanks Sissy. I'm glad. I was worried about her/him.
Ah, bummer for panda fans.
Do eaglets usually take their first flight off the nest or a branch?
I agree Lynn. I am still feeling pretty crappy. Lymph nodes are swollen and hurting, coughing my head off, chest feels like it is going to cave it, ears are hurting....
But...other than that. I am great!!!!
Don't you wish you hadn't asked? Sharon is sick of hearing it for sure!! This is just hanging on forever. Of course, I have only been on antibiotics 1-1/2 days. So, it will ease up soon, I am sure.
Good Morning Eagle ♀ and ♂ friends.
We can vote some for for Bob "Robert" Quinn's prize-winning photo again today...
Save the Chesapeake Bay Foundation Photo Contest Check out picture #4 of course ☺
I have Norfolk up and it looks like three eaglets in the nest to me. That would be comforting news. I wonder how the biologists decide which bird will get the transmitter.
Hope today is a good day for everyone.
Suz says: NBG cam is back online, but can't tell if there are two or three eaglets
there. Almost think it looks like 3 again, so very glad of that.
Hidey has turned into a CAM HAM!!!!
Morning, all!
Look at Hidey peeping and flapping all over the nest!
Wow... I feel so blessed to be able to witness this!
Lori, you have mail!
And you are right about DC....not just the post but our TV stations, too! GO SKINS!
Feather still on Hidey's beak!
Awww, sorry Mei isn't pregnant :(
Two things - the first is I am so glad they don't track our eaglets. I would rather believe that they are free and soaring. Don't want to know the sad parts of it.

Sissy, are you still taking a decongest-ant/antihistamine/expectorant/cough suppressant preparation?????? You need to, along w/ Tylenol or Ibuprofen!!
About the threads...you have to click on Shepherdstown eagle cam daily at the top of the page to see all the threads...maybe that's what other person couldn't see...they were only on the last thread...
NBG showing the truck on the ground....maybe they were just practicing for that earlier?
There are def 3 eaglets in the NBG nest.
There are definitely 3 eaglets in the nest at Norfolk! YEAH!

The NBG eaglets are saying "oh no, not again!"
I don't know why they didn't just climb the nest one time and do it all then.
Norfolk Botanical: Dr Watts is currently being interviewed by a local TV station
Norfolk Botanical: he is commenting that this is a little more delicate than the banding operation a month ago
Norfolk Botanical: The eagles are older and can be more aggressive so the climber and biologists must be more careful
Norfolk Botanical: We are still waiting for Tim Nuckols to arrive - he is the climber for the day
Just had a quick look at the Kestrel cam...one of Deb's favorites....chicks are thriving there, pooping like champions..
Heading out, 91 yoa gal pal needs to shop!

Hello everyone,
This is my first eagle watch!!

Norfolk Botanical: They will select the largest bird so the weight of the transmitter will have the least impact. It is not very heavy and will not affect flight, but they are looking for the least amount of impact
Norfolk Botanical: I think only one bird is selected because of the cost of the project - this is a question better suited to Dr. Watts - I will try to find out.

Stevie, WELCOME to our group! Hidey is anything you want him/her to be....we may never know!:)
Did you see one of the eaglets at Norfolk.. jumped to one of the tree limbs above the nest
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts confirms that the expense is one concern and that they put only on transmitter per brood in an effort to spread the transmitters out among a wider group of eagles to better understand movements
Thanks Eagle-Eyed Sharon!!
admin: Another user asks where the parents are during this activity
Norfolk Botanical: As for the parents - as you just saw, one parent briefly returned to the nest for a moment just minutes ago. Generally during this process, the adults will circle overhead
Norfolk Botanical: This satellite transmitter is the first to be fitted on an eagle in the Chesapeake bay region and it will help CCB answer the question about where the eagles go.
Paula -
Is there anyway we can have future Hidey's here get a GPS transmitter to keep track of them? Or is that a bad thing?
I think they do all the Channel Islands/Catalina eagles.
** good morning **
** everybody **
C(°Ù¿°)D
Jim
Norfolk Botanical: The transmitter weighs 70g and is solar powered. It will be fitted on the bird using a harness. The harness will have enough room for the bird to grow

Good morning, Movin Jim!
Lori - we asked NCTC that question in 2006...we were told they don't need to band or track eaglets in our area, since they have recovered so well.
And they do band and track all the Channel Islands eaglets
admin: Perry, one user asks if the public can follow the eagle's location online via this tracking data
Norfolk Botanical: yes - I will see if we can get the web site listed
Can on the ground view now
Good Morning All!
Panda update coming through email & is now on the Panda Home Page.. :>(
Link to Panda Cam Home Page
admin: Perry, we have had several questions about the harness, whether it is permanent and whether it is restrictive to the bird's flight and ability to fish
Norfolk Botanical: The climb is about to begin
Just in time for viewing the events at NBG
Hello everyone.
Up periscope!!
This is the best thing I've ever gotten addicted to. Love this bird and can hardly put my computer down. Thank you so much Steve. My family and friends think I've lost my mind. Gwen of S. C.
Norfolk Botanical: The harness will stay on for at least 3 years and the bird could pull of the harness
Norfolk Botanical: Nathan Jones is in the bucket as it heads up to the tree
Gwen, WELCOME!! So glad you are here. My family thought the same thing when I started and now I have a sister who is more hooked than me, if that is possible. How did you find the cam?
Gwen - Welcome!
We don't think you've lost it! :)
Have they told us which of the 3 will be the lucky one to get the harness?
orfolk Botanical: Once the transmitter is place you can track the eagle online
Norfolk Botanical: Norfolk Botanical Gaden and CCB will have links on each web site
Norfolk Botanical: for the tracking site
Norfolk Botanical: also check www.wildlifetracking.org
Mema Jo, the largest one will get the transmitter.
PARENT ALERT, OUR NEST!
Parent our nest...did they bring a fish???
Thanks ya'll for the info. I believe she's a female. In tribute of the Dolly Pardon song "She's an eagle when she flies!! OMG the mother has arrived!!
Guy is looking at the NBG eaglets in the tree!
Yes I think we have a fish...
I read back and see that you said the largest bird would get the transmitter.
I believe food of some sort was brought in.
Hidey is telling Lib to stay away from his fish!
I guess the mother?? IDK. Awesom!!
That might be Belle.
NBG eaglets are looking at the tree climber...like "you again?"
I mean Awesome!! (correct my spelling) LOL
Just saw the shadow of a parent flying over at NBG!
LOL... so funny... Hidey can't stop talking, even while she is eating!
Norfolk Botanical: The adults will circle overhead but not aggressively defend the nest
Norfolk Botanical: You can see the shadow of athe adult flying overhead
Norfolk Botanical: also spiders are running across the cam domes
admin: Perry, several users ask if the eaglets are noisy during this activity, calling out etc.
Norfolk Botanical: the eaglets are not vocalizing at this time - it certainly cannot be heard from the ground
Well, we are definitely not having to fret and worry about Hidey going hungry today!
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. watts is climbing the tree
admin: Users are wondering about Nathan, and if he was the climber during the banding.
Norfolk Botanical: Nate was one of 2 climbers for the banding
Food again, this is awesome...
Food again, this is awesome...

Hidey is getting a good meal - feeding is going well by doing it without any help.
My goodness, look how big those varmints are!
Adult digging in the nest now.
NBG eaglets are very quiet
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts is approaching the nest
Norfolk Botanical: The eagles are not very alarmed
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts is looking for the best approach to the nest
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. watts is about to step in the nest
Norfolk Botanical: Tim Nuckols is bringing up a bag to lower the eaglet
Norfolk Botanical: The eagles are very calm
Guess Mama told them to be still!!
These 3 Rebels we very well behaved at their banding as I remember!
Norfolk Botanical: He is placing an eaglet in the bag - no problem
Norfolk Botanical: He will secure the bag and transfer it to Nate
Norfolk Botanical: The bag is getting ready to go down
OUr parent eating the rest of the fish...
eaglet going down at NBG
This has to be such a trauma for the NBG eaglets and parents! I don't like it, glad we don't do that at our nest!
That's Lib in our nest.
Norfolk Botanical: They are gently lowering the bag
Norfolk Botanical: On the ground is Reese Lukei to catch the bag
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts will descend, the other two will stay in the tree
Norfolk Botanical: Reese will open the bag
WOW! And to think three months ago I'd never seen an eaglet.
Paula, Thanks for answering ?'s about GPS for Hidey - it's been my secret dream.
Lib now feeding some fish to Hidey
Almost looked like Hidey gave Lib a bite to eat!
How can you tell it's Lib in our nest?
Sharon - all the birds recover very quickly from the experience. I would love to see where our eaglets go...
Hard to see what's happening on the ground at NBG...too much shade
Lori - an educated guess after all these years of watching. SIZE is what made me say Lib. Belle is longer. BUT to be on the safe side I usually cover myself and just say ADULT or PARENT
Wouldn't it be awesome to check and see where Hidey's been every day?
I think I read that the CI eaglets locations are monitored 14 times a day - then again I can't remember what shoes I'm wearing without looking!
GOOD WEDNESDAY A.M. EVERYONE...have a good one watching NBG
Good Morning Mits! Are you out on the balcony enjoying the Ocean Breeze?
it is a beautiful morning here, calm seas, bright sun....
Parent just left!!
Norfolk Botanical: She is placing the transmitter on the center of the back
Norfolk Botanical: checking fit, making sure the feathers
Norfolk Botanical: this is the oldest of the 3 chicks
Norfolk Botanical: He has a full crop
Norfolk Botanical: She straightens the feathers out over the harness
Norfolk Botanical: Correction - this is the second eaglet - HH - they think it might be a female
Norfolk Botanical: Adjusting the harness to make sure it is loose enough for safe movement, but not so loose it falls off
Norfolk Botanical: She is making sure the harness is centered and does not interfere with the crop
Norfolk Botanical: The bird is very relaxed
Norfolk Botanical: The cam is so zoomed it si hard for me to hold it steady on the eagle
Norfolk Botanical: The harness is on and she is letting it relax
Norfolk Botanical: The bird was actually asleep while she was fitting the transmitter - Libby had to wake the bird up to make her sit up
Norfolk Botanical: to make final adjustments
admin: In answer to dozens of inquiries about why this particular eaglet was chosen, here is the answer given earlier: They will select the largest bird so the weight of the transmitter will have the least impact.
Norfolk Botanical: Final adjustments
Norfolk Botanical: She is riveting the straps in place so the fit will remain correct
Thanks all for your answers and patience with my questions.
I'm forcing myself to take a break.
Have a blessed day. Be good to yourselves.
Norfolk Botanical: Libby used a piece of cardboard under the strap while she uses the rivets
Norfolk Botanical: the eaglet has gone back asleep
Norfolk Botanical: She is about 8 weeks old
Hidey is at the base of the noon tree trunk
Jo, I thought I saw Hidey giving some pieces to Lib, too.
lol...so much for it being a trauma to the eaglet....ZZZZZZ
Norfolk Botanical: Reese is photographing the work up close
Norfolk Botanical: Eaglet is sound asleep - makes the work easier
Norfolk Botanical: Last of the rivets are put in place
Norfolk Botanical: there is still some natal down on the eaglet
Hi friends! Just checking in to wish all a great day...cant stay as have a full plate at work today :(...see where Hidey and parent had an early lunch a bit ago...it looks as if Hidey has grown over nite! My heavens! And she/he is soooo talkative! And getting really 'snippy' :) Glad to see no frost in our area today...and hope the sun and spring like weather continues...Have a great day and will hopefully check back in with all later this evening...i owe i owe so off to work i go...
admin: Several users have asked if we now know the sex of all three eaglets in the nest
Norfolk Botanical: The oldest and youngest were determined to be males when the banding was done last month. It appears this eaglet is female
Norfolk Botanical: Libby trims off excess harness
have a good one Boz
So do ya think the NBG brothers are gonna feel jilted??
orfolk Botanical: Libby trims off excess harness
Norfolk Botanical: She is superglung the ends of the harness to keep them from fraying - cardboard is between the harness and feathers to protect the feathers
They're done at NBG
photo time:)
Off to see the eagle paparazzi!
I think it is wonderful that they can do this, even if something happens they can locate the injured or dead eagle.....
admin: WVEC.com will post a slideshow of the events later today
Norfolk Botanical: She is being shown to the public and is very calm
Norfolk Botanical: WE cannot see the barricade and the public from our cam
Norfolk Botanical: She has spread her wings for the public
admin: WVEC-TV reporter Joe Flanagan will have a report tonight on 13News. His report will also be on WVEC.com.
Norfolk Botanical: This eaglet weighs about 10 pounds
all the guys just hanging out together in the tree
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts is explaining that the eagle will eventually pull the transmitter and harness off
Norfolk Botanical: He is talking with the public but is turning to return the eagle
admin: Perry, several users wonder if the adults are still circling above
Norfolk Botanical: not at the moment - one report had them over the admin building a few minutes ago
I think this is so exciting!
But, does the smell of humans not drive the parents away?
lol I bet the boys wonder what is happening to Big Sister!
LOL:
Now you guys have me hooked on two eagle cams!
And I have got a lot of my coworkers watching now too! :-)
Mits, guess you are disappointed, too...but being at the beach has to help soothe the soul!
Thanks for running commentary, Paula.
Aimeecat, there are more, interested? :)
I think we were told at one time that they didn't have a sense of smell. It was brought up when so many dead fish were in one of the nest. I'll have to verify my statement!
Norfolk Botanical: Joe Flanagin is interviewing right now
Norfolk Botanical: The eaglet is going back in the bag
Norfolk Botanical: It is zipped up and they will attach to the rope for the return home
That's correct Jo. Many birds don't have a very keen sense of smell...except turkey vultures!
LOL aimee
Aimee from what we have learned the theory of human smell is an old wives tale
Up goes the eaglet
Thank goodness for those tree climbers who love eaglets!
Eaglet safely back in the nest
SAure could use a zoom in!
No Lynn, it is what it is....really did not think she was pregnant this year, looked so much like last year....2010 is the year Mei and Tian are supposed to return to their home in China, but guess they will renegotiate their contract if they can
hope the boys don't pull the GPS off...:)
Cimbers preparing to head back down...
Mei - it seems a shame for her to go through all the motions with no end result! At least she got a lot of sleep!
Do ya'll have sound? I've lost mine.
Stevie - just silence..... I did close the site and brought it back up but No Sound.
I do have sound. Just heard a truck backing up with the beeping.
I got my sound back.
I got my sound back.
NBG nest - Eaglet on the right looks to be the one with the transmitter
Norfolk Botanical: Dr. Watts now thinks that one of the other eaglets - HE - is a female and not a male as originally thought
admin: Perry we have had many many users express their thanks to you for the outstanding play-by-play description of the events, and for the work Norfolk Botanical has done to bring these eagles to the public.
Norfolk Botanical: Nate went down first and is going down in the bucket. Tim will follow
Norfolk Botanical: It is our pleasure - we hope everyone can come to the Garden sometime and visit
Norfolk Botanical: An osprey is chasing one of the adults flying overhead
Norfolk Botanical: The adults are circling closer as Nate and Tim leave
Norfolk Botanical: Both adults are circling nearby
admin: The complete chat transcript will be posted shortly
admin: A slideshow will be online later today
Norfolk Botanical: thank you everyone who logged in today
admin: We have had many questions about visiting Norfolk Botanical Garden. Here is a link to their excellent Web site: http://www.norfolkbotanicalgarden.org
Norfolk Botanical: They are now pulling the truck away - this will encourage the adults to return
Norfolk Botanical: Tim is out of the tree
Norfolk Botanical: All is calm and back to normal in the nest.
Norfolk Botanical: We will monitor the audlts today. After the banding last month, they were back on the nest tree within 10 minutes of the truck leaving
Norfolk Botanical: This is the eaglet with the transmitter on the front nest
I got my static back lol
Hi everyone! My name is Lynne and I have been following the US Fish and Wildlife Eagle Cam for a couple of weeks and it's SOOOO addicting! So I decided to check out the blog as well, which led me to the WVEC and lo and behold I got there just in time to see the activities this morning!
Welcome Lynne - Great that you got here just in time for the NBG event. It is really something else to be able to watch!

Hi Lynne....I'm Lynn, too!
both O's at BWO
NO, Jim...I was wondering that myself.

Hi Lynn, too! I guess this makes me Lynne TWO!
Lynne, where do you live?
Hi Sharon! I live in Randallstown, MD. Or "outer Randallstown" as I call it because we are in a rural area.
Sharon - Lynne is a Marylander -
Chock one up for MD
We'll never get up as high as WV's count! lol
woo-hoo for Maryland:)
I am back on. This is Oak Leaf. I decided to switch to back to my old name.
Baby Eagle is growing.
IWS nest, TH and WE are now on zaplive.tv...smaller picture, but clearer
Welcome back Sequoia! We are just a-growin and a-growin around here! :)
Paula, was there no eagle at PH this year, have not been following them at all
Hi Sequoia! I am happy to see someone who knows trees on here because I was wondering what kind of tree the eagle's nest is in at the NGB...can you tell?
Sharon:
Oh yes! I am very interested! Tell me more. LOL
The Shepherdstown nest that I am looking at is in a sycamore tree.
Go to beakspeak.com. That will keep you busy for a while! :)
I meant the one at the Norfolk Botanical Garden
http://www.wvec.com/cams/eagle.htmlat NGB
we were watching this morning as they put a satelite tracking device on one of the babies...it's the first time I was on that site.
Bad link. I get a page not found.
If you click on Paula's name on the blog, she has a lot of links on the Eaglet Momsters blog page.
Yes, the nest tree is a very large
Sycamore tree - it is the one I use as my avatar.
Sequoia - which site do you want?
Thanks anyway!
