Darla - When there are 2 or 3 eaglets, the younger ones have to be creative to get to the parent to get food.

Also, we have seen in this nest, and other nests, that the parents will stuff the oldest one first, and he will leave the siblings alone. Then the others get to eat.

Mits said...

still about the same, my friends, it will take a while, I'm sure....not going to the zoo tomorrow:(, the put me on a leave of absence, till I can get back, so guess they won't fire me or dock my pay..:)

For those of you who may not have the Mason site, here is the latest update: at a little after 8 am today:

"We are still in icu at Paoli Hospital. Mason is sedated, with a breathing tube so he doesn't get in trouble. They reasonbly ruled out siezures,( we've never had any up to now anyway), he has some pnemonia, the cultures take a couple of days to grow to nail down whatever the infection is.
We, they don't think upper or lower respiratory is causing his breathing episodes. It is probably a mechanical issue in the upper airway, kind of like snoring with an apnea event.
Unfortunately, the safest solution is to put a trach tube back in, and keep Mason out of trouble for sure. I say unfortunately because he has really started to use his voice a lot. After a week or so they can put a trach tube in that will allow him to speak.
He's safe and he will be here at the Paoli Hospital for a few days or more until they decide what to do and is out of the woods.
One step forward, two steps back. I prefer to believe 1/2 step back.
Keep it coming!
Love BEE and Syl."

magpie said...

And for those of you new to this blog, Mason was in very serious traffic accident in WV in July 2008, spent many months at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, and has been at Bryn Mawr rehab in Philadephia area, for many months. Ms Bookworm said...

Good Afternoon, everyone! I'm being a slowpoke again today. Took a while to catch up. First of all, Happy Birthday, Bob!-- I am SO impressed with your cardinal pictures! Hope Mits, Sharon & Mema Jo are all feeling better today. Deb, hope your headache is better, too! Was sorry to hear about Mason-- have lit a candle for him. Watched the Eagle Song video-- it's a keeper! Just beautiful. Hedgie, the herons ARE big-- we always have laughed in years past because the fledglings are about chicken-sized, and if a neighborhood cat cornered one on the ground, the cat always ended up running for its life. The heron nest is in our backyard ficus tree, about 30 feet up. The tree itself is huge, about 48 years old. We have two like it in the front yard that are the same age and size-- HUGE! They look like one big tree with a double trunk. Don't know what we'd do without them; they're a Godsend in the hot summer, shading much of the house. (We don't have any a/c!) Sharon, you mentioned having a new White-crowned sparrow. We have several pairs here, and they actually spent the winter! They usually seem to migrate, but stayed this year. Am trying to watch to see where Momma hummer flies-- I think she has probably started another nest, away from the herons. Will try to get a good picture of the ficus tree so you can see what it looks like. Maybe I can catch one of the goshawks in the tree out front, too. OOh-- looks like somebody brought Hidey some lunch! Isn't it great how they share so politely? Think I'll say TTFN and watch them. Have a great afternoon! :o]
