Good Morning, Eagleland! And falcon, hawk, owl, osprey, hummers, bluebirds...... It's just easier to say Eagleland.

This is my busy time of month at work, so I pop in when I can, and I appreciate all the notes you leave. My heart stopped when I went to BW this morning and the first thing I saw was that they had lost an eaglet this morning! Whew! Glad I finished reading the sentence, and he's been found.

Have a beautiful bird-watching day!

Good morning, Eagle Folks,

Almost put my machine into a "Froze up" this morning by accidentally trying to open all the animal cams at once.

Have an exciting day with all the new nestlings on Beakspeak.com now...too many for me in the mornings, for sure. Going to have to tell them to put some of them "on hold."

On the size of the BW Eagle chicks:

A couple of days ago, they and their Dad were lined up side-by-side as he was feeding them, and it was obvious all three were roughly the same size and shape.

I think both chicks are the same sex... Does anybody recall when they reach their full size?

It could be they are both male, but, whichever, I'm sure they're the same sex now.

Good Morning To All!
Just finished reading earlier comments. Thanks everyone for the commentaries. Great!
Very good pic on our home page, Suzanne. Thanks Steve for the new thread.
I will be gone for a few hours - Keep your eagle eyes opened!

Suzanne said...

Phew, made it back. Thanks for the new thread, Steve! So nice to see them this morning. Thanks for the heads up, CostumeLady! You did an awesome job of commenting this morning, hardly felt like I missed a thing!
Other PC is up and running, but can't find some programs that were on there. Always something.
Did get to peek and saw Spirit feeding the chicks. They are so cute, and he gives them such tiny little bites! He is such a good daddy!
Back to the grind, have to find some lost programs...

Suzanne said...

Good grief, good morning, everybody. Came over and made a comment, and didn't even read the blogs, so I'm neglecting my manners! So good morning, all! Hopefully found my missing program! Hum, only time will tell. Have a good one.

My son just finished two years at PSC. I went there 25 years ago. He is transferring to Bluefield Christian next year so we had to get all his stuff out of PSC. What court did you work for? It was a very scenie route. I took the new highway from Moorefield to Wardensville. It was even pretty up there. I had a wonderful day.

Suzanne said...

Oh my goodness, we have brand new branches for the Kent babies. How pretty is that now. BUT, they block our view of the babies on cam 2. Bummer.

MITS said...

I think "STAR" is the Martha Stewart of the eagle world, she loves those leafy branches

Suzanne said...

LOL Norma and Mits, yea, let's hope this one "takes," but I'm sure they'll be practicing some more... We're running out of time for osprey eggs! I asked Lisa about how late we could go, and she said if we didn't get an egg by mid-May, we probably wouldn't get one this season. So got about a week or two for them to ger serious!

Suzanne said...

Mits, she sure does, and she's very efficiently blocked our view of the babies! I've only been watching briefly today, but every time I've looked, Spirit is either on the babies, or feeding them. Maybe I've just missed Star. Or maybe she's just been out getting more branches...

Suzanne said...

Time for me to hit the road. Geesh, busy day. Have to fill up, yet again, and go check my baby! Get to give him more meds...oh joy! Had some this morning at 1:30, and that was a challenge. Specially in my work clothes!
All have a great eagle day. Love the new Kent look, but hate not being able to see the babies. Spirit looks so ragal with his new branch decorations!
Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly!

MITS said...

See ya, Suz...

Good afternoon everybody. Love the new look of the blog home page!!

Today must be "Decorate eagle's nests with green leaves day". Love the look!

Good Morning all, If it werent for the early morning postings I would never know what was going on. There are others like me who read and dont post but appreciate those who do. Remember I watched for a year and a half before I ever signed up. Its a beautiful day and I hope Paula is enjoying the sun. That storm is going to circle around and hit us again tomorrow.I now have my 6 year old grand son for the next 10 days while my daughter is in Mexico. He is a joy but work. I will be one busy lady. We are going bike riding along the American River Saturday early morning. He wants to see the deer and birds. I just want to come home in one piece. We will see.

MITS said...

Have fun, Annemarie

Anne-Marie said...

Do Eagles continue to refresh their nest if they are not planning on using it? Why does Belle keep bring branches and grass in for a nest she wont use until next year? Has anyone experienced this before?

Jill said...

Maybe she figures if she does it this year she won't have so much to do next year. LOL. Seems kind of strange that she is doing it, if she has no plans of using it, but time is running out. Time to quit decorating and startin laying.

glo said...

heidigirl I think it is this pairs way of saying; This nest is occupied KEEP OUT!

Anne-Marie said...

Sounds reasonable. They seem to be staying around guarding it. I would be out there flying around seeing the world. If they lay when it is very cold out and the chicks make it why would it be worse for them to lay now and be teens in the fall. At least they would have more weight on them to face the cold. What month does it start to cool down there?

Jill said...

I would think they would be alright until early October if not late october. I have been known to decorate my house for Christmas in shorts and a T Shirt LOL. I agree if they are born in the freezing cold and live why would being young adults be so bad. I guess they need time to learn to hunt for food and stuff. Where do eagles go in the winter?

Anne-Marie said...

In California they come here. Thats what started my great love for the beauties. They winter in the foothills but go where there are no roads so seeing one is rare. The only one I have seen was at my sons house is Oregon.

MITS said...

Jill is correct, we can have some mild winters in this area, and when bad weather comes it really doesn't last long. We can have a snow storm one day and it can be in the 50's the next. these particular eagles stay in this area all year because of the close proximity to the potomac river, like the eagles at BW who take over the osprey nest in the winter months, they are close to alot of rivers on the eastern shore of MD, not to mention being near the Chesapeake bay. Good area to live in for people and birds:).

Anne-Marie said...

thanks Mitts and Jill. Just wondering out loud. I guess I had better get to work and earn my pay check. I'll be back later.. Hugs.

Mauley said...

Afternoon dear friends, need to catch up on blog. I'll be lurking so keep posting or I will never know what I have missed. love donna

Mema Jo said...

I am back for a brief time..Hi all you afternoon bloggers! Jill
Where is Bluefield Christian actually located? Sharon lives in Bluefield WV
Thanks Kate for heads-up on NE They are getting big! BW site said they lost the one eaglet for about 30 min the other day! Must have been branching
Anne - don't bung up your knees on your bike ride
Do you think I could get some eagles to come in and freshen up my home with some greens???

MITS said...

Donna, we won't let you miss anything:)

Jill said...

Bluefield Christian is on the VA side of Bluefield. I am sure Sharon is familiar with it. I believe I got the name right. I will check. I haven't actually been there. He was down there to look at the school and talk to the soccer coach.

Mema Jo said...

Donna:Bluebirds My daughter says she feeds them through the winter (meal worms) but that she does not feed them through the summer months. You agree? They are so beautiful!

Jill said...

It is just Bluefield College. The other one is Bluefield State College in WV. Too confusing.

Mema Jo said...

I agree with what Glo said about the nestorations that we see even if the nest isn't occupied 24/7 -- It's a declaration of Ownership.
Glo has good video/with music of the VA eaglets... Brings back memories of watching our eaglets last season start their flapping/jumping exercises.

Speaking of exercises - that is where I am headed now. BBL

Feeding time at Kent. Finally got to see both little ones

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Okay, what is up with Bluefield College, Jill?

Bluefield College is a beautiful Christian college that sits right on the VA/WV border.

I went to Bluefield State quite a few years ago.

Hello, Sister Donna. How is it going with you?

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

It makes me so sad when I switch from the Kent nest to our empty nest!! :(

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

I have 3 Mr. Grosbeaks and 1 Mrs. Grosbeak on my roof right now. BEAUTIFUL BIRDS!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Okay, am I by myself?

Jill said...

My son is hoping to go to Bluefield next year. Waiting on acceptance now. The soccer coach has asked him to play and made him an offer so I don't think there will be a problem.

MITS said...

Your not by yourself, Sharon, I was just doing some reading

MITS said...

Sharon, how do you like getting off from work at 2??

normabyrd said...

JILL---I went to PSC many "moons" ago---ho! I am on the Alumni Board now---I worked for the Family Court Judge---covering HAMPSHIRE, HARDY, MINERAL, GRANT & PENDLETON Counties--I traveled with the Judge--Enjoyed the work---travel was hard sometimes!

normabyrd said...

SHARON---I feel the same way about the KENT chicks----Ever since they have hatched---I keep comparing them to our nest---Even watched GLO'S video showing SPUNKY, et al!!----I think their nest "kinda" looks like ours too!---But I am MOVIN' ON----waiting for the OSPREYS & watching the OWLS--HAWKS--& FALCONS----We are blessed with birds this year!---

Jill said...

Which judge? Guessing you were at PSC before I got there. 1980. I didn't think Joey would like it but he really has liked it. They were asking me about some of the professors that had been there a while. I had some of them. And some of them haven't changed at all from what they say.

normabyrd said...

JILL---Oh Yeah! I was at PSC a few years before you----The college has certainly changed & is still changing--Charlie Parsons, is the Family Court Judge---He is from Petersburg---but has lived in Romney since law school----

Feeding at NE---The older chick is getting all the food!---The younger one is not getting any----Hope MOM notices soon---

Jill said...

I know Mr. Parsons by name but that is about it. Joey actually had to live off campus this year. Partly by choice, partly because they didn't have room for all of them. They rented from Dr. Boggs, downtown. Extremely old building with slanted floors etc but they loved it. After all they are college boys. LOL. As much as he complained about Keyser, he sure didn't come home much so it couldn't have been that bad.

normabyrd said...

MITS---Can't see the "Little Prince"---They keep showing a large green bush!!!------Was watch the VA EAGLETS---First "poop shoot" in a long time----ho! ho!

normabyrd said...

JILL---I agree---if he didn't come home---That's a sure sign!---He was having a GOOD TIME!--ho! ho!---He is going to be farther away from home this next year!----

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Thanks for the explanation Jill. I was just a little lost - as I am most of the time anymore! :)

normabyrd said...

OKAY SHARON----You know what I miss????----I MISS YOU YELLING--"I GOT WAX!!!!-----VICKY & GLO TOO!

Jill said...

That was his father's first comment. He will be farther from home, we won't see him as much. HELLO, we didn't see him more that 2 times each semester since he went to Keyser.

SHARON-Tis okay. Sometimes I just pretend I am lost so the guys I work with won't bother me. LOL

GOOD EVENING, EAGLE LOVERS...

Two observations:
On the question of Liberty-Belle continuing to work on their nest if they're not going to use it (I think many of us have wondered about that).

First, they don't "know" if they're going to use it or not...it's all an instinctual breeding-nesting program.

Second, if the storm hadn't gotten the chicks, they would still be going full bore with nesting activities, so they're just carrying out that part of the instinctual program.

Third, it keeps the adults bonded and working constructively together...instead of getting depressed and morose and turning to a life of crime....

I commented on the BW eagle chicks probably being the same sex this morning. And this evening Lisa has a note that they are getting near fledging time, so that means they have probably gotten close to their full growth. I also said they looked about the same size and shape as their Dad a couple of days ago; ergo, I fearlessly put forth the guess that they are both male Bald Eaglets...anybody else have an opinion?

That's enough...at least until I eat dinner. Have a good evening,

Jim

MITS said...

Wonder if those little buggers are coming out soon.

Mema Jo said...

I will check it out

Mema Jo said...

Well, the cam looks closer and the grass looks trimmed. Maybe the stage is being set for us to see some wee owls. Just don't know what is on the ground at the top of the pic. I'll need to check out in the morning...
Thanks, Mits.

MITS said...

Is that a frog in the KENT nest???

Suzanne said...

Good morning, eagle world! Bit nippy out, but very bright moon. 44° at my house, 51° here. Hopefully it will get nice and warm this afternoon.
Had to put my baby back in the hospital again last night. As soon as I got home, he started screaming. Knew he was in pain, cats can hide pain very well! So gave him his pain meds, then fed birds and did a few things, but a half hour later he was still squaling. And bleeding. Called the vet and took him in immediately. She said his kidneys were distended when he couldn't go, and now that he can, they are contracting, but convulsing while they do that, and very painful for him. She was going to give him something a little stronger than what she sent home with me, and try to make him comfortable. Told her to make him well, didn't want him spending the weekend in the hospital. So will call at 8 and get a status.
Also will be a short day here, have something to get out, but have to leave at 9:30 to get a new ID card for computer, and don't know how long that will take. Someone else is going also, and he's driving, so that's 2 appts. Hopefully get back around 11 or shortly thereafter.
Ok, not gonna read blogs. We do have an osprey in the nest, and the BW chicks are still asleep. Our nest is MT, falcon nest is too dark, as it is out west. Barn owls are awake and just standing in their corner.
All have a great eagle day. Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly!

Suzanne said...

Well, we have another osprey in the nest, but no clue which one..other female or the male. They're kinda eyeing each other, so I'm guessing the interloper female. BW eaglets are sleeping all over the nest, and sometimes they just flap their wings. Soaring in their dreams! Can see the bar in PA, which is MT, but I'm guessing one of the falcons is still on eggs, other one is not in cam view. Owlets are just standing around in the corner.

Suzanne said...

EAGLE ALERT!!! Just arrived, think it's Belle.

Suzanne said...

Standing over the egg cup and looking in the nest, so it may be Liberty. He usually checks the egg cup first thing. Oh, don't know brought something in, kinda round and greenish. hard to see through the blinds!

Suzanne said...

Got head down now, but the thing whoever brought in now looks whitish. Whatever it is, she's keeping an eye on it. 1 osprey left, 1 remains. Kids are still dream flapping.

Suzanne said...

Eagle moving to launch pad, so I'm guessing Belle.

Suzanne said...

Ok, now checking egg cup. Head almost in it! Now head up, she's just standing there. That's Belle for sure, way too big for Liberty. Whatever she brought in is still there, she's got her feet next to it, but she's now facing noon. No, make that 3ish.
2nd osprey arrived again.

Suzanne said...

LIB ARRIVED, NOT BOTH IN NEST.

Suzanne said...

Belle by launch pad now, Lib has his head totally in egg cup. Swear he's looking for a surprise egg!!!

Suzanne said...

2nd osprey that just arrived just took off. Lib moving to his perch, Belle watching him.

Suzanne said...

Lib looks ready for takeoff. He didn't still both there.

Suzanne said...

both were looking at something down below. Now looking in opposite directions. Oh, Belle on launch pad, Lib on perch, both facing right.

Suzanne said...

Belle left, Lib watched her go.

Suzanne said...

Lib still there, but on perch. Using the perch they just made, on right of screen. Maybe it just extended the launch pad.

Suzanne said...

Lib still there, just looking around.
Lost the osprey cam.

Suzanne said...

Standing tall again, still on perch. He's gonna take off any sec.

Suzanne said...

Lib still there. Got the osprey cam back, and there are 2 ospreys in the nest, both squatting and mantling.

Suzanne said...

Changed his mind. He's in the nest standing over the egg cup. Maybe he's gonna see if he can actually lay an egg. (Not for lack of wanting, I think!!)

Suzanne said...

Belle just returned.

Suzanne said...

Ok, that was a switch. Lib left, Belle in nest.

Suzanne said...

Belle still there, standing over egg ccup, facing 1. both ospreys still standing in nest. Chicks are having flap practice.

Suzanne said...

Now she's just standing over the egg cup. Maybe something will sorta fall out...

Suzanne said...

Ahhh, little kiss on the cheek from Belle to Lib.

Suzanne said...

Dang, they were both facing front, now Belle's hanging out at the launch pad again. Lib's still standing over egg cup.

Suzanne said...

Both just hanging out. 1 Osprey left. BW kids exploring nest looking for leftovers, probably. Our pretty PA gal is still on eggs.

Suzanne said...

both watching the sunrise. how romantic!

Suzanne said...

Just hanging out. Osprey grooming.

Suzanne said...

Still hanging out same position.

Suzanne said...

Lib moved closer to Belle, and she's looking at him like why are you crowding me/???

Suzanne said...

Lib is now on launch pad, make that lib has now left the building. Belle still there.

Suzanne said...

Belle still standing by tree looking pretty in the sun.

Suzanne said...

Belle just standing there by tree. One osprey in nest grooming, so that's a good thing.. she's relaxed. BW chicks are doing wing flap practice. Well, one is, other is sorta watching. Falcon on eggs, looks pretty in the sun. Owls just standing around.

Good morning everyone! I think George was a squirrel who kept visiting the eagle nest in Kent. I say was, cause it looks like he's breakfast now. Parent has been feeding chicks for about 5 min. Off to work, glorious day outside, although my allergies are worse than they have ever been. I've already seen 2 hummers, 3 rose breasted grosbeaks, an indigo bunting, and a hawk. Always a good bird day here, if only I had an eagle nest.

Good morning all,

Looks like a beautiful day which is a good thing, my daughters school is out in the community today as it is Labors of Love Day for them.

I see the Kents babes eating I can't believe how adorable they look, when they look at the cam they look like lil' bandits.

PS eagle is in nest, no one else is visible.

Looks windy at Va. , hope those juvies proceed wing stretching and hopping with caution. Done scared me the other day when two were looking down and one was hidden behind the tree limb.

Sorry to hear about George though we never met, I have seen pics.

Still feeding in Kent :)

Megan, I too have had rose breasted grosbeaks, had 2 indigo buntings yesterday, towhees, mourning doves, sparrows (of different varieties) and a big hawk this morning. My little birds quickly left my roof and the hawk landed on the banister of my ramp!! He was huge!! I really do not want him swooping down here to get my birds (but I do know the mother nature thing).

Yes, George WAS the squirrel at Kent. When I saw him last night, he was lying flat on his back, deader than a doornail! Mits sent out a pic yesterday afternoon of him climbing the tree beside the nest. Much too close to those babies, I suppose!
