Thursday

First egg thread.

From our biologist Dr. Jim Siegel:

The egg laid today is likely to hatch after about 35 days, around March 19.   One or 2 more eggs are likely to arrive over the next 4 to 5 days, with accordingly later hatching dates.  Although  the female will likely do most of the incubation, both sexes have developed a brood patch and will continuously incubate the eggs, turning them every so often for even warming and to maintain a healthy relationship between the embryonic membranes and shell. The eggs must remain covered to avoid cooling.

Hi all - so happy to hear that Belle finally laid her first egg of the 2015 season! Yay! Good thing eagles are well-equipped for cold weather b/c Belle is surely going to get some this weekend.

I can just barely see the white head and tail feathers on the live cam but, even when the picture is pitch black, we know she'll be there in the nest tonight!

Thanks Steve for the new thread and thanks to everyone for reporting throughout the day.

Need to find something to eat - later all!

JudyEddy said...

I am assuming that it is Belle being she walked back to the cup and hasn't left yet Shep may be on edge of nest

Thank you Steve for the fresh new thread. I am so happy this egg is here

Lynne2 - Congrats on the call over.
Here's hoping the Codorus nest to be able to celebrate with us on this egg laying day...

Love the report of Belle's head tucked - brings back lots of memories over the years past. Happy
to see that Shep (Almost typed Lib)
has been to the nest. I'm sure he didn't miss anything from the attic above as I doubt he flew too far from his Belle!

Oh Judy - The Slap

Too much family drama for me to witness...Just not my cup of tea...
Let me know what it was like if you watch....

Simmering tension and buried secrets among a group of family and friends surface in the premiere of this drama when a man slaps another couple's child at a backyard party.

Thanks for all the reports. Congrats to Lynne2 on egg. Sorry I missed it but maybe I'ok catch the next one. Like names of Lincoln or Abe. I will go along with what you al decide. Good night all.

Hi, Everyone,

Omigosh! We have an EGGBERT!!!
I am SO habby! Good thing that Belle has so much flugg up around her ears, considering the weather forecast for the nest!

Could it be that we'll have another egg on Valentine's Day?
Wouldn't that be nice!

Not much happening here. It's HOT, with mild Santa Ana winds (again!). I wish we actually had some winter weather.

Jo, we actually have some small green tomatoes forming on our tomato bush! The biggest one is the size of a 50-cent piece! Is it really mid-February?!

Well, I need to get a few chores done before dinnertime. Will check back in later tonight. Have a nice evening, everyone!
I ♥ us!!!...Congratulations, Belle & Shep!

Mema Jo said...

Andy - I know you will enjoy those tomatoes - Have a good evening and
push some warm weather our way! I don't like our double digit temps when they begin with 1 or 2 or even a 3..

Mema Jo said...

I do have 3 good shows on TV tonight

You know I say that just in case -

Goodnight and God Bless
and Thank you for our eagle egg
and keep Belle and Shep safe! ♥

Good morning!
Very cold and windy!! Was hoping that they would give us a delay, but no such luck. Lots of districts all around us delay, but no not Washington Co. Oh well.

Waiting for daylight to see who is in the nest. Excited to show the students!

Frisbee gets his stitches out today. Those who are not on Facebook...he has a tumor on his foot. It is cancer. The vet tried to remove it, but it is wrapped around the tendons and muscles and she was only able to get pieces for biopsy. This kind of cancer will not spread to other parts, but it won't go away and could continue to grow on his paw. I am taking him to an oncologist on Monday to see what the course of treatment will be. Yikes...this could be EXPENSIVE!!

Looks like I'm the only one up so far so I will check back in a bit.

Sandi said...

Goodorming Dana and all my eagle friends on this first full day of egg-watching. Can't see anything on the live cam and can only hear wind but it makes me smile to know that Belle is there protecting an egg.

15 degrees here but it feels like -8! Brrrr!! I'm sure it's colder than that in Shepherdstown!

Dana, Frisbee's tumor sounds similar to the one in Jenni's mouth. It's not cancerous so it won't metastasize to other parts of her body, but it will continue to grow and invade her jaw bone. Since Jenni was already 12 1/2 when we rescued her, we have opted not to have radical surgery done (which would remove part of her jaw bone) and not to do radiation treatments. The vet says he can "debulk it" if it grows too large and affects her eating. It's been 6 months since her initial surgery to reduce the size and, when I took her on Monday, the vet said it has grown very little, so we will just keep monitoring every 6 months. Good luck with Frisbee.

Well, today is my "no snow day" - it feels very strange to know it's a school day, I don't have any reason not to be there, and yet I'm not rushing around and getting ready.

Have agreat day all - stay warm if you're in the path of this frigid air!!

Sandi said...

Live cam just came into view and I see an eagle with her head tucked. Day 1, Mama Belle!

DanaMo said...

Good to see Belle!!

Sandi, it is cancerous, just that they do not think it will spread. It's called synovial myxoma low grade, but it is malignant. Frizz is 10.5. We will see what they think.

Belle seems to be hunkering down in the flug, probably trying to get/keep warm!!! Hope I can. Of course, I have the internal heater coming off and on all day! Being 51 is just grand.

Good morning Sandi and DanaMo. Getting a late start. See Belle on egg duty. 11 degrees here. Take care all. Talk later.

Sandi said...

There have been several parent switches this morning. One just happened - poor little egg was alone for about a minute while Shep just took off and then Belle landed. She is incubating again now. I got a great shot of egg#1 all alone - will put it on FB blog and in the album.
