Lily the Black Bear When Lily was in labor last year she made almost no vocalizations. Hope is the grumbly one in the den. She wants access to the nipples and when she feels she is losing access she grumbles and bawls. -- SM

Lynne, I just cleaned off some rib bones tonight! Want 'em? Poor gal sure has had a rough go. Was the a--hole prosecuted for assault?
We had an employee who CLAIMED similar injuries from having an empty cardboard box hit him. We knew d--n good and well that it wasn't anything at work that caused it. He even claimed brain trauma. Really wanted to go hit his drs. up side the head with a box. And now his son is a local cop.....speaks well for the men in blue, doesn't it? Apples never fall far from the tree.
No precip here.
Well, since most are calling it a day, I will follow suit. Sleep well. Maybe a watched bear won't pop.....really believe she has a long ways to go. 22 hrs. with Hope.....so, could well be at least midday tomorrow.

Good Grief! Another late night!! I dozed in chair, then saw the bear report!!!! Thank goodness they say labor is about 22 hrs. & she started about 5PM, so maybe tomorrow afternoon. They also said that Indians call this full moon the Bear Moon, as that's when many bears have young.
As for habby pill---cranked me up after dinner to scrub bathroom & put down new rugs, seat cover, etc!
I don't know why, but the salt trucks keep running up the street. I didn't think we were getting anything but rain. Maybe stuff will freeze.
They posted on fb a video of a song written for Lynn, the bear walker. It is really pretty.

OUR nest is VERY bright at the moment, but empty. Wonder if the moon is out there. Precip has moved out and clouds are breaking up a bit. We barely got a dusting of snow but I think it may have been freezing rain for a while before it stopped. Guess we'll see in the daylight!

We just talked to Sue Mansfield at the bear center and they are getting Jason the gear he needs to make the trip to the shed. She does not believe he has left yet. Sue has her own problems right now as she has lost heat in her own house. We will keep you posted as we know more.

Good morning everyone. Have my pop up popped :-). HOPE everyone is having a good day including Hope. I am safe and warm in Southern GA while they deal with ice in Northern GA which is exactly where I would be in the mountains no less today had I left as planned Yesterday. Bitter cold back home for a couple of days followed by more snow. SO Dex and I are where we belong for the time being.

Oh--Lynne, Emma only weighed 13 lbs. last Saturday. She was born on 9/15/10. Aren't Springers supposed to weigh 45-55 lbs.? She's not skinny anymore, but definitely not overweight. Still, am feeding her the maximum amt. of Blue Buffalo as listed on the bag. Any ideas?

Andy and Lynn...About Emma's weight...could be lots of variables. That 16 week thing is a "general" size gauge, but usually pretty darn close. Emma could be the runt of the litter. And I don't recall any info on the parents/owners mentioned by Andy. So I don't know if they saw both or either parent dog. And there can be vast differences in how a certain breed looks, even though they may all be purebred. Breeding for a certain "look" is an art. And even with the most discriminate breeding, all of the pups will not usually turn out like a breeder hopes! Even AKC papers are fairly useless. Anyone can register a purebred dog that has parents with a registration. The AKC doesn't have any quality assurance whatsoever.
I don't think there is anything for Andy to worry about. As long as the vet is happy, and Emma is happy, no problem!

Then I thought, gee, if I had done this sooner my teaching would have been better organized. I am hoping that cleaning out the house will give me more room. LOL
Oh, she is only a half pound heavier than Annie. Little dog!
I am off to clean....taking my laptop with me, of course!

As cold and windy as it is - the lion cubs are out in the yard.......
I'm going stir crazy watching Lily, had to stop and peel potatoes for supper tonight. Tilapia and potato soup with bits of country ham. Hope Jayden likes potato soup...will fish out the potatoes and put on high chair tray. He does prefer his food in a dish now, instead of on the tray. Makes a mess when the dish lands on the floor, so newspapers will cover the floor tonight:) He also like to hold a spoon or fork while he is eating...doesn't use it, just likes to hold it. He does try from time to time.
Just put some news posts on my blog...a surprise visitor to my feeder, the moon the other night (not as good a Loretta's though), the dogs, and some woodpecker fun.
I wish Lib or Belle would bring in more fluff for right in the egg well.

Well, log didn't work for digger dog---exactly. She pulled it away from hole...then proceeded to chew on it. But guess that's better than digging in mud! Anyway, she wasn't interested in staying out long---too cold and windy.
Dana, SharPei standard weight was always 40# in the past. Of course variations occur. No idea what Mai's daddy was---but strongly suspect lab or some mix thereof.
Ok, Lynne, won't worry about little Emma. Hey...maybe she's a mini! When I got Cinnamon, she was supposed to be a mini.....turned out she was full-sized. Either breeder didn't know which of her males mated with the dam or there was an extra bit of HP going on. Vet, who bred dachshunds herself, thought she was a mini at first......didn't take long to know that wasn't the truth.
Lynne2 - you've got some good runners in your video. Glad Steve could just stand in one spot and still have them in view! Good exercise - that should tire them.
I thought I just saw Hope in the far back of the den. They have had a quiet afternoon so far.
**I don't like the way most people speak of Hope as though she is an intruder. She is still a yearling and needs her Momma and the den. There is a lot going on with Lily and I think Hope senses this as the time goes on.

I agree, Jo. It isn't as if other yearlings don't re-den with mom. Gotta remember, too, the trauma Hope went through of being abandoned---twice! She probably has deep psychological scars from that.
I stopped reading the chat there because of just that. I wish someone would come in (Lynn or one of the professionals) and tell the chatters.....that Hope is in no way bothering Lily and this is a "bears life".

we are so glad we fixed the holes in the fence in that field Jo...my guess is that it's at least a half acre but probably more! They love to chase, and it's so much funnier in person to see!
I don't think Hope is an intruder. However, I am a bit worried because although yearlings often den with mom, most female bears only have cubs every OTHER year...if I remember my info correctly. SO I wonder if Hope will deal with her new siblings well. I can't seem to find any info on yearlings and their mom's new babies.
Lynne, love your pictures and the video is great. Lots of energy there! Bosco used to go crazy running in our yard. Old man dog can not do that anymore.

There is no way to get a good picture of the intense look on Puddy's face when she chases Daisy...it's too funny! And she really does keep up with her pretty well! I love my rotten dogs!
Speaking of rotten, I am happy to report that Brother had a perfectly NORMAL stool this morning!! Not only that, but the frequency of the BMs the last 2 days has been just twice a day instead of 5 or 6. I was worried because even last night the stools were SO runny still....but I am very happy now!
