Eggs.--Two eggs almost invariably make up a full set for the bald eagle, sometimes only one, and rarely three; in two or three cases four eggs have been found in a nest, but these may have been the product of two females. The eggs vary in shape from rounded-ovate to ovate, the former predominating. The shell is rough or coarsely granulated. The color is dull white or pale bluish white and unmarked, though often nest stained. Very rarely an egg shows a few slight traces of pale brown or buff markings. The measurements of 50 eggs from Florida average 70.5 by 54.2 millimeters; the eggs showing the four extremes measure 78.8 by 56.2, 71.1 by 57.6, and 58.1 by 47 millimeters. The eggs are ridiculously small for large a bird. (Compare the relative sizes of the eggs of the ruddy duck, the sandpipers, or the hummingbirds.) Consequently the little eaglet requires a long time to develop.
Young.--The period of incubation is about 35 days, according to the most careful observers, though it has been otherwise estimated. Both parents assist in incubation and in the care of the young. Mr. Nicholson tells me that at every nest he has visited after dark he has found both birds at the nest, one incubating or brooding and one perched near it. In one instance the incubating bird remained on the nest until the climber nearly reached it. Usually an eagle will leave its nest as soon as an intruder is seen approaching it, but occasionally one will sit closely until the tree is rapped. The food of the young seems to be about the same as that of the adult, to be referred to later. The behavior and development of the young will be discussed under the northern race, on which more information is available.

It is a WOW kind of day isn't it?
Thanks Steve for the information.
My cam picture keeps going blue with the x in the corner??

Hi Irisss yup sure is a WOW kind of day... I think Jazzy looks like aboy in the picture but thebrown outfit was so cute... Now where is everyone else at ?
Dana - The male osprey eats off the fish head when he brings it to the nest for the female to serve to the chicks - it makes it easier for her.

Yikes, I finally get back here after connection problems and find an egg has been confirmed. I'd better hustle over to Yahoo to see if a picture has been posted. My guess for first egg was waaaayy off.
I hope they soon eat that gross looking thingy........
Steven's report on what the food is in the nest:
Hi,
As far as I can see from our live feed, it's a fish. May be tthe tail is leftover from the squirrel last week?
Steve
Both in nest, eagle at PH, also.
Gone by the time the black went away on the screen, dang thing.
Now I have green lines on the top and black on the bottom. That is a new one for me.
Yeah, normal screen, back on the egg.
It snowed a little bit in the Ft. St. Vrain nest.
thanks dana! Who is in the nest now? Is it Lib?
Both eagles at BWE. Change that, Lord BWE took off as soon as Lady BWE arrived.
well if the cam will hold out for us today I think its a good afternoon for a Panda Nap Could be a fun and busy night ahead.
They switched around when the screen was going wacky, I can't tell when they are in the nest. I am just learning to tell when they are standing up.
Danelle, I think it is Lib, too small for Belle. JMHO.
10 is still on the nest at PH. It is very windy there today.
I think we all take guesses at who it is when they are alone and lying down. Don't feel bad if you get it wrong, we all do.
I am assuming they are still working on the cam with all the strange screens popping up????
I certainly hope they are still working on the cam. Been getting a lot of partial pics all day.
My big news is that I saw my first PA bald eagle and nest yesterday not 15 miles from here.
Turned egg - still one egg
Hi all,
My goodness that egg is getting a lot of turning !!!
That chick will be dizzy [joke]
I know I know its only a yolk as yet but I wanted to make you all laugh.
love and hugs

Wow Granny - isn't that great. Love watching them on the cam, but live is even better.

Dizzy chicks are OK by me, Chrissy!
Chrissy, I said earlier no chance that eaglet will get stuck to the side of that egg.
Does look like more of a big catfish than a squirrel at this point....tail pointing towards 7, head pointing toward 2
Me to Paula, as long as they are hatched healthy pet,
But I will be sick in a min if that horrible mess isnt moved,,, what a thing to keep looking at, they must not be to hungry or it would be all gone by now.
NOT going to eat at their restaurant in future !!!!
love and hugs
Chrissy

Unfortunately the nest is about1/4 mile or more off the road on private property, but I'll drive by and take a look with binoculars when I can.
Off for now
Well, I will say with great pride that the only eagles I have ever seen live and in person are Liberty and Belle and what awesome sights they were!
No way Sharon pet,
It will come out spinning,,,
Right, time for my David Attenbough
prog.
Speak tomorrow all, Enjoy chatting,
Take care all, night night God bless.

Jason at beakspeak has been informed by a couple of our bloggers. Hopefully he will post our site as having an egg OR he may wait for the final count!
By Golly - no pics in Momsters since 2/1.......... Go for it guys & gals!
Grannyblt Do you receive the Momsters' emails - Like today's with pics of the egg & eagles?
BLOGGER COP got me again...tee-hee, going to smack him:)
Smack away Mits ;)
%^$&)@# campage - can you smack it too?
My cam is really acting up big time
Is it just mine?
Rollin' Rollin' Rollin'
Keep that egg a rollin'
WOO HOO!
Haha! I love it mema jo! :)
If I remember correctly - it was Belle who usually had the night shift. Anyone else remember it
that way....?
As Charlie Brown would say, "AAAAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH"!
well all, it's time for me to hit the road home. Hopefully I'll be back on later tonight and see how the egg is doing. Sandy just got a glimpse of Lib sitting on the egg and it brought a smile to her face. Talk to ya'll later!
Love,
Danelle
Eat it Up!
Eat it ALL Up!
Buffett brought to you especially by your husband Liberty.....( :
BELLE SEEMS TO BE RAVENOUS NOW!!
Hope you get on later from home Danelle.
I can't help but wonder if the tremendous amount of traffic on here is affecting the cam?? Hope that is all it is.
Really hope all this excitement helps Sandy with a speedy recovery. We can give her a trip to the nest anytime she wishes in the Eagle Express!! That is a promise, Sandy! Just let us know. Danelle can go along.
Jo Did you see my message that the picture I sent around? I had also sent to Steven and he answered back saying it is a "fish".
Now that Belle has devoured a large portion of the meal, it does look like a fish. All that protein is soooo good for Belle. Lots of calcium for the next egg; eggs.
I hope Lib is getting plenty to eat, he will need the extra stamina to help raise those little sweeties.
Having dinner with Aaron (grandson)
BBL
IT'S JUST DISGUSTING. YUCK.
I don't think the traffic will cause problems other than a slow/partial reload. Shouldn't cause funny colors.
Supper time here; having roasted chicken. Glad we didn't plan FISH!
Dana - I replied to that email But what tickles me it was ID'd as a fish with a leftover tail of the squirrel.... lol
Buck on the PA cam.
grannyblt, where is here? We have a home in Red Lion, PA - is the nest anywhere close to that?
MISS IRIS, where are you now? Hope you are in Florida, enjoying the warm weather!
IRIS, I used to live in Brownsville, Pa. until I was 13, then moved here to Martinsburg, My mother went to a doctor in Washington, Pa. We used to call it "Little WASHINGTON".
Jo went back into Feb 07 comments. There were comments at like 10:26pm Belle wiggling down into nest. Other night time comments about Belle being in nest. There were am comments about Liberty being in nest. So I guess it is Belle for the night shift and Liberty early am. Then they probably do the switch.
Both eagles in Norfolk nest.
Dad just flew out.
GULP......almost done......
Is anyone watching Norfolk? I've never seen an egg get laid before, but rocking motion seems to be happening??
Hi all,
Congrats again on your egg. May you get at least one more. :-)
BTW, can anyone give me an update on the Norfolk nest? Have the parents been incubating the egg enough since the attack?
Thanks for the research, Dana
I guess now with the night light we may be able to check it out...
I hope this night light doesn't keep me up so late - We'll ask Jim to do the night viewing & reporting honors!
Yes Deb I am watching and recording...I think its egg time there for sure
I thought so from everything I have heard on here, my first live egg laying!
Wanda,
Yes, yes, yes - we are in Florida enjoying the warm weather - at least my bones are enjoying it!
We will be back before fledgling time though and thought it would be fun to visit a nest in PA too, even if my heart belongs to Lib and Belle!
Deb, they rock like that when they are settling down on the egg to make sure it is in the right spot and fully protected.
We just can't see it in the NCTC nest because it just refreshes, it is only visible when there is live video. Which we hope to get soon!!!
Yes, Deb, rocking motion is usually indication of egg laying...
Iris I think De means norfolk who also seems to be in the LIVE egg laying mode.
Lisa,
I've been watching the cam at Norfolk in addition to Blackwater and NCTC and the parents are sitting on the eggs at Norfolk pretty much all the time.
There have been a few moments when it looked like neither was there, but not often - and I'm not really sure she wasn't way down in the nest.
Iris - Deb is asking about the standing rocking motion, not the incubating rockin gmotion
zoomed in now
egg turning our nest
She has been rocking in the Norfolk nest for at least 20 minutes now.
Okay, thanks for the info.
Deb, I guess when I answered your message I was looking at Norfolk doing the laying down rocking motion. Not the standing up rocking mothin....Sorry about that!
Hi Lisa I have been so wrapped up in NCTC nest that all I can say is that I have looked at NBG nest a few times & eagle was nesting each time. Their 1st egg was 2/1 before 6:30 - I think it was a false alarm when someone thought a 2nd egg came....... Their nest also has a very deep egg cup - Once today I swear the Zoomer was trying his best to see down under the nest eagle.
I had to laugh while it was going on.
Thanks, Iris, I didn't know they rocked before they laid down to incubate, too. I am learning so much here.
Darn, time to feed the dogs and they won't take, just a minute anymore.
Deb - Glo If NBG eagle throws her head up - we know that the egg was laid! lol That's a good sign!!!
Thanks again Lisa - Yes we are hoping for more than one also.
And, Yes the Norfolk parents have been incubating well since the attack - there have been the usual off nests for short periods of time - no more than an hour or so....but very steady all day yesterday from what I could see and read elsewhere.
VA - rocking has stopped....peeking under a little - but mostly pretty still
Barton's Cove & Maine nests can't be
too far behind us. The egg laying
seems to work it's way up the coast!!
Moving very carefully now
Now down on the egg - if she laid one, it is hard enough to incubate now
NBG - what a show! I just marvel at these huge birds and how gentle they can be. Just watched mom/dad get into the nesting position with such
care!
Anyone think there are 2 eggs in there yet?
I am heading home now...but have info on Barton's Cove that I just haven't had a chance to share...will send out email later this evening...
Yep she seems quietly nestingnow. So what do we think. Sure was pushing for half hour or more .
Barton Cove's first egg was seen on March 3, second came on March 4. Maine's first egg was on March 6.
I just don't have time yet to go over into their chat room at NBG. I just keep looking for an announcement on their cam page.
I have done ZILCH today.... I know I have more bills to pay!
Deb What were last year's date on Ft StVrain?
I guess we have awhile to wait for ME & Barton's Cove. All the better to get the icy cold month out of the way
Well one of two things. She has laid another egg and is now ready for a well deserved rest oR she is so tired from owl watch night after night that she was falling asleep standing up and rocking herself occasionally. I guess you can tell I am leaning towards theory number 1.
Colorado first egg on March 3, second on March 6.
Thanks again for the Norfolk news. I was just worried the owl might cause the parents to give up on the egg.
I think I've read that being off the egg early on is not as bad as being off later in the season, when the chick has already begun its development.
So the egg should be okay.
OK I am already afraid that the cam fun for this evening may not be so much fun afterall. SIGH!!! I can't hardly find the words.
Hi everyone....( :
I've just been watching...I'll be back in blog in awhile
I got back to work at midnight tonight, I will check the cameras if I am called out. Otherwise it will have to be up to Jim.
Jo Check your email please
OUR EAGLE IS UP, CHECKING EGG
DON'T TELL ME THAT CAM IS STUCK...
Eagle in our nest has been in same position. Think it is stuck grrrrrr
it is stuck and looping, every now and then you see a slight change like a repeat, and spidey's web, blow in the wind.....give me a break.
going to fix dinner...BBL
Hi everyone! This is my first post. I usually just watch the cam and read the blog. I thought I would write and let everyone know that from my understanding, eagles usually lay their second egg two days after their first. I've been watching Belle and Lib for a few years now, and it seems Belle has been pretty consistent with that, from what I remember. I know a lot of you are dissappointed in not knowing exactly when Belle layed the first egg, but if we see when she lays the second, maybe we can assume the first was layed two days prior! Just a thought!
and a good thought to Mike.....thanks:):):)
GOOD THINKING MIKE! Now if the just doesn't go out again, that will be a pretty good indication of when this egg was laid. Thank you for your input!
Glo & Deb Go on into the NBG chat room - You know everyone that is in there........ See what they think.
Let us know if you get their opinions.
IF THE CAM DOESN'T GO OUT AGAIN......AND THERE IT GOES!!! DARN!!
OUR EAGLE MOVED
CAM NOT STUCK (YET)
SHE IS MOVING...I THINK.
WHAT ALARMIST ARE WE...YOU KNOW, ONCE BURNED...Seems OK now. Sorry.
I think she want to to be relieved for a while and is looking for Lib.
I just want to see him go over & eaat those left overs... lol
Hi Mike That is the only way I would know how to calculate the 1st egg date. Mike confirm for me
If the egg were laid 2/1
the 2nd egg would be due on 2/4
Did you mean 2 full days in between.
Was there a night light last season? This is great to be able to see all night long.
Jo, is that Lib? Looks like his feet.
now it is ok...
yes, Wanda, think there was a night light, remember that fateful night in March
just wondering why it has stood in the same spot for over a half hour
Good evening everybody. Whoever that is, he/she is not laying on that egg.
I don't know, it might just be looping, going to have dinner now, if it is still in same spot when I get back, then I might be concerned BBL
I just told Thelma that I thought it was stuck in a loop!
@#%$##&!!!! Give me a break!
Yes, Mema jo. I think it is usually two full days, but not positive. It seems that I've read or heard that somewhere. So if Belle layed her first egg late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, we might expect another egg late tonight or early tomorrow morning!! Need to go for a bit. Need to make dinner for the little one. Bye!
I think so too, Sharon...#$%#%%^!!!!!!!!^$$$^&
I am uploading a video to You Tube now. I will put it on a Feedlitz for tonight along with of course our own special NCTC news. I was watching and following the action with some gals on Maine forum...I don't think I can add another chatroom to the list of places to go and things to do LOL. I will give the url in here to when it is done. She did at least get up and move around a little bit just now. I was glad to see that. I no longer see any rocking kinds of motion.
Now that pic looks different.
I thought I saw movement of our eagles head again Guess I will need to stare at it and try to see the looping
I wish he would just walk over & start eating again
Is the egg visible at his foot
I see the egg in front of him at his feet, it looks like he has moved back a bit.
well maye the egg has been turned the necessary number of times for today and its warm enough there to take some time off LOL It does look different to me too BUT not sitting on the egg Hmmm confusing
I don't think the cam is stuck I think it is Lib and you know how he can be a statue.
I am once again snowblowed out, the plows went by, so I wanted to get it done before it froze. My neighbor said more tonight, I haven't heard that. I hope he is wrong. This winter is never going to end!!
Thanks Glo - we'll wait for the url on NBG... I know what you mean about another chat room or another forum...
I have a hard time keeping up and I'm not recording like you are! I usually just go where the action is!
Wanda it appears to be Lib
You know I won't swear to it..... Unless when the switch comes up & Belle flies in for the night watch!
Sharon - that is the egg at his feet - right? He best nest on it! That is what would lead me to believe the cam is looping -
I give up, it seems stuck now, doesn't it?
Here is what I recorded from this afternoon for those who didn't catch all of it at Norfolk.
? A new egg at Norfolk>
I know we see the head move, but it is always the same head movement...., and sometimes the clock completely disappears, and sometimes clock does not change for several minutes, hope he is just being a statue
ok, he has moved back father away from egg
HE IS MOVING & GROVING
WOO HOO !
I can't see the egg for the glare
get your butt on the egg, Lib
Maybe he really did just stand there & sleep - not use to lying down
But do you think he is lying down in
the egg cup now?
Don't glow your eye at me, Babe
LOL Poor Lib
I have been away from the cam for awhile and Lib/Belle has moved back a few inches and it looking at the egg as if it were an alien!!
Helen, I don't join this group until the latter part of April, so I don't know about what happened in March. Really checking it out now.
Yeah, now we know for sure, he just laid down.
NOW WOO HOO!
That is INCUBATION POSTURE
I wonder if Belle is around, and that is why he is starting to look busy...
I'm going over to see what news Glo
has given us on the NBG nest.......
Wanda Go to Momster Photos
You will see 2 albums marked
SNOW STORM 2007
Really Wanda, thought you were with us when we lost the eggs and eaglet during the St. Patrick's Day ice storm......time does fly doesn't it
That remark made me chuckle Mits!
ME TOO, JO! HELEN CRACKS ME UP.
We laugh, but it may be the truth. Men are like that, Yah they are.
you, betcha, Wanda:)
Well, I am so glad the cam is not stuck again.
I so not like that night vision we have now. Way too much of a glare.
SHARON, did you know your friend, OZZIE was on here earlier today?
On the Kent Forum, Tom Otto placed this message to my question about the condition of the nest floor......
Mema Jo,
The floor of the nest where the hole was is now gone. A good deal of the nest material is gone too, perhaps a result of George's home building activity. No sign of George. Maybe he decided to vacate when the nest started to fall apart I took more pictures and a short movie if you want to see some more from the climb. Tom
I replied that I and many others would be interesed in seeing his pics & video.
unless we get color and dye the eggs, you can't really see them
boy we sure would.....Jo
We need to jump start Star and Spirit into action. If the nest is that bad, they have some work ahead of them.
Thanks for including me on the eagle trip, costume lady! I know Sandy would love that. It would be my first eagle trip! :)
Is that Belle in the next now?
Glo I think you caught the Magic Momment! Great Video from NBG!
Also here is some info from our man on the scene Joefore about the light:
There are 2 IR lights for the camera. The camera tree was too far away for the primary light to be mounted in, so we mounted it to the left of the nest and it goes on and off with an electric eye. Ideally, it should be shining at the same alignment with the camera. The camera should also be closer and higher but the new nest did offer such positioning and we did not want any hardware in the nest tree. The camera has a built in IR light that can be manually started for 30 minutes and it is the reason the nest is brighter at different times.
and that is the rest of the story, thanks Jo.
Danelle, I think we were thinking it was Liberty....
Belle is awake
Or Lib - whatever eagle you think is in our nest
so it was Belle standing there all that time tonight???, when we thought the cam was stuck:)
lol.....take your pic....with that glare, could be either.
it is filling the nest like Belle, but it so looked like Lib standing there all that time, but when screen was black, there could have been a switch
Eagle is up
Can see the egg plain now!
