The San Francisco Chronicle posted this piece yesterday that does a great job of framing the issue.
In far-ranging comments, Louv described how a child's outdoor adventures -- or lack of them -- can affect his or her development. He said that a promising future can still be shaped:
-- Youth health: "The increase in diabetes and heart disease is because kids are growing up not moving. When you look at discussions of child obesity, you never see nature mentioned. They (parents) send them to the gym, but you look at adults, and gyms are not doing the job that well for them either. The greatest increase in child obesity in history happened in the same two decades as the greatest increase in organized sports in history."
-- Child development: "How does nature shape child development? Take attention deficit disorder. Kids exposed to just a little bit of nature get better. The attention span seems to lengthen. Could it be that the huge increase in kids on anti-depressants is because we took away the calming effect of natural experience?"
-- The education bounce: "Schools with kids with nature testing do better across the board, 27 percent better in science testing, than a kid in a cubicle. If we really care about education reform in United States, we would have a campaign called 'No Child Left Inside.' "
-- Integrating outdoor education in schools: When I told Louv of my proposal to Gov. Schwarzenegger to require outdoor skills curriculum in schools, he responded: "In Denmark, outdoor education occurs year-round. Kids get fewer colds and flu, and academic scores are higher."
-- The video impact: "Video games are the new rock-and-roll. I don't think they are the spawn of the devil. There are other factors, but video games and television are seductive ...
When I saw Rich at the end of last week, he said that 10,000 copies of his book had been sold last month alone. It is a hopeful sign that this issue continues to heat up as more people become engaged.

JILL!!!---DID you do that again!!!
It takes a very dedicated parent to get their child interested in nature and outdoor activities. It should start at birth.
With TV and Video games in every household, it is so much easier on the parent to use these tools as babysitters. I have seen this practice in many. many families, unfortunatly.
That was great Steven, thank you, already our Maggie is an outdoors girl, she loves the breeze and watching the birds.
Yep did it again. Saving the first spot for you. LOL.
Steve, such a great article. And it makes a lot of sense. Never thought about the ADD part but it doesn't make sense. The kids I know who are out playing don't need meds. Those sitting around do.
Mits-We leave for OC Sunday.
The Bluebird takes the shells out of the nest and disposes of them--sometimes eats them for the nourishment that they are full of
My Printer is down and I am not getting any pictures. I am goiong to work on it and BBL.
Looks like we might have another bluebird. Don't see baby but the egg is broken. Possible a 4th too, that egg looks funny
Thanks for the info Wanda-- Hope you don't mind my asking all these questions.... But you're the one that knows the answers
Catalina Update -
We’ve been trying to figure out what’s wrong with our Two Harbors cam and it seems to be that one of the chicks has pulled a cable out of the camera because we are net even getting a picture at the first receiver site and all the batteries are working well. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to get out there for another 6 weeks.
We are currently working on the West End cam. We’ll keep you posted.
Steff
Now you know why one eaglet at the Two Harbors nest was named RASCAL! ROFLMAO!!
MITS & JO---Can't remember if I thanked you for sending me the BLUEBIRD site---I was sure I had the right page, but I only saw the MOMMA BIRD on the nest!!!---Time for lunch break----Had you all seen the videos & newspaper article on IWS???
JO, all of a sudden I can't get on to the KENT EAGLE FORUM, it has just disappeared for me:(.
your welcome Norma...
Thanks for the update Paula.
Norma - I get so absorbed in the IWS forum - It is so informative and love the participants! I usually go over to it 2 or 3 times a day.
Wanda-Robyn-Mits-Anyone Please see if you can get in on the Kent Forum... I can't access it.. If you do get in would you send me the URL that get's you in! I can only get to the Bravenet Home Page.....Thanks
Yes, Norma, I saw it when it was posted, albeit late last night. Really nice slideshow and video.
Here's the link from the San Diego paper on the West End Banding.
Article
Slideshowe
JO, That's all I get, too.
Thank you Paula. That was a fabulous slide show - I know the music added so much to the event! Spectacular!
I just think that Dr Peter and Steff are such a well matched pair!!
Thanks, Paula! Just to know it's not just me! Loraine did email me quickly and is investigating it.
Just the other day the Galary got corrupted and disappeared. The Galary is Deltaview where as the forum is Bravenet. 2 different sources.
VA eaglet playing peek a boo with the cam
Oh Yes On the slideshow ....
I could just replay and replay the
sounds of the eagles - They are so
calming!
VA eaglet - That is too funny.
I never imagined that we could have such up close captures once they got this old........ Love It!
WOW, PAULA, THANKS!! Guess I'm surprised that Dr. Sharpe agrees that the eagles should be taken off the endangered species list. I would like them protected forever as our national symbol
thanks for writing to Loraine, Jo.
JO--
Thanks for taking care of us all by alerting Loraine to the Kent Forum problem. ALSO--Thanks for emailing Photos of Mrs. B's babies.
Norfolk not for the faint of heart at the moment - really up close view of eaglet eating in nest! Looks like some sort of mammal? Don't think it's a bird - anyone else?
Might be a bird, kinda looks like feathers in the nest.
Mits - There are still protections in place.
That eaglet looks like an expert already.
PAULA---Don't know what they are eating----but they are SHARING!!!--ho!----Thanks for pointing out the IWS SLIDE SHOW & VIDEO---Thought everyone would ENJOY it!!!---You are a better salesman!!---ho!
Yes, Paula, I have read about the protections in place, just don't trust some people to follow them.
Sad news over at the HBG falcon site today. Green Boy was found dead over the weekend. THey think he flew into a pedestrian bridge. Sadly, I think they only had one survivor from the 5 in last year's nest. I'm glad our eaglets are NOT banded!
Aww, poor falcon.
That is sad news, but that is nature.
LOL, looks like food drop by Dad at VA
West End cam is back up - may have a fledge there....
Our cam has the blues.....
I was AWOL or MIA - whatever you want to label it for almost 2 hrs...
You can miss a whole lot in 2 hrs on this blog! Sorry for that news, Sunny. Odds from the city flying aren't good.
Suzanne is not going to be happy with the blue screen tomorrow a.m.
I still only see 2 baby blues.
Mits-I think there are only two still. The angle I had earlier made it look like another had hatched. A little later 3 eggs were clearly visible and intact. Now it looks like another is cracked, probably just the angle again.
Dinner time for me.........
I vote for 2 baby blues
VA - Must dad & his daughter
She is really really large! Glad she still shows her Dad respect and lets him eat first........
IF ANYONE CAN HEAR ME--
Go to the NY Kestrel webcam
They are sitting in a row & it looks
comical.........
Good evening all eagle and bird watchers. I just finished my email only to check in here and see that I missed the hatching of the blue birds! You lucky ducks that saw it. I hope some one got some pics that we can look at. Mama is on the chicks now, sooooooo I'll have to wait to see anything.
Ms.B is off eggs and it looks like there are still three left to go. I am so excited. I hope they back the cam back a little so we can all get a broader view of the nest when the chicks get up and moving.
Candy - check out the VA cam
Double click on it for full screen
When you want to reduce it just double click again...
Jo, they are just beautiful sitting there on the limb with parent above. Va. has been showing some real good closeups from time to time today. Thanks for letting me know.
Our cam sure a bright blue - not going to see anyone this evening.
The Finland female osprey is so
beautiful. Her nest is so entwined but it really doesn't look comfy.
Can't see the chicks right now.
I see that the Santa Cruz chick is down on his lower level again. Did anyone see if he took off today or not?
lol Candy I guess we spoke to soon about the VA nest...
Thanks Paula for the links. The videos were awsome. Mits, I am with you about the taking the eagles off the endangered species list. I don't know if we can trust people to abide by it.
Yes, I guess so Jo., but you can still see the two chicks and parent sitting there.
CANDY
BLUEBIRD OFF THE CHICKS & EGGS
Ms. B is off her nest, but I can't see much in the way of how many eggs she has left. I do see two tho.
What do you think, Jo. Still only two chicks? I wish we could get a better look at the nest.
If we both only see 2 eggs That should mean there are 3 little chicks huddled in that nest. At times you can see them open their beaks. Right now it is hard to see 3 distinct chicks...
I only see one egg now. Sometimes the chicks are laying on or really close to the egg and it looks cracked or hatched.
If you watch the upper part of the screen you will see a chick with his head on an egg. There are at least 2 eggs.
Candy Wanda said the mother will take the hatched egg shell and either eat it for the nourishment or throw it out of the nest.
Hey Jill. Did you get to see the wonderful hatching of the first bluebird egg?
Hi Jill - I was looking real hard trying to be sure that the 2nd egg in the upper part of the screen was there. The little chick covered some of it. So we all say
3 chicks 2 eggs
Ok Jo, so we'll be watching. I missed the first part of the process, I hope I can see all 5 before the night is over.
Candy - I'll send you the photo of the first hatchling.......
Poor Ms. B. I hope she got all her resting done. Now her work really begins.
Thanks Jo, I'd love it. I had hoped someone got pics.
The egg is there but I can't tell if it is whole or not. Well actually I can't see any eggs now, momma has returned. I am pretty sure I saw three little bodies. The blob was too big to be just two, I think.
And Mama isn't about to let you see now, Jill. :)
She is becoming a pain. How are we going to see the eggs hatch if she is there. LOL. Norma get your cane out and move momma bluebird please. HO HO
Well I think we may have been wrong. Looks like one chick with a very large mouth, one chick curled up and 3 eggs.
Mrs. B must have heard Norma was coming with the cane so she left. LOL
Joe and Jill, it looks like three eggs left. Boy that one little one had quite a big mouth for a newborn,
Go up to Paula's comment where she gives you the link to Slideshow..
It is around the 3:19 hour....
I'll second that Jill. A cane would work well. Jo, sorry about making you a guy there. Slip of the fingers. :)
Sorry I was trying to find something else for you 2 to watch......
3 eggs & 2 chicks which are all
over the place..........
Jo, they are showing a close up at Va. again, but I don't want to miss the bulebird eggs
The 1st hatched chick looks as though he has dried out and turning into a little fluff ball
I wonder if they are Blue???
Go look at VA anyhow
AWESOME
That was cool Jo. Those eaglets are huge. I don't think we realize it til you see them in the arms of a person. Shew.
Did you see her wipe the sweat off her beak onto her wing feathers lol
It must still be very warm there - her wings are opened and you can see her breathing with an open beak most of the time.........
Jo, they aren't blue they are ugly. LOL Poor little guys. Guess it is good we can't see them in color.
http://www.almaden.ibm.com/almaden/environs/96an18s.html
8s.html Rest of the url. I can't do the tiny ones. Forgot to learn how.
Those furry fuzz balls are all over the place for being just born, Jo. They'll give her a run for her money when there are 5 of them.
I think when I read from the site Jill gave me I may find that the Daddy bluebird is very helpful once they hatch.
I didn't read it Jo, just looked at the pictures. Let me know what it says. I am too lazy tonight.
Va eaglet - If he isn't careful he is going to fall off his branch! His
foot slipped a minute ago......
That poor Va eagle has mouth wide open panting and his wings out. Anyone have a beach umbrella to shade him with? :)
i have never been able to see the juvies once they leave the nest - well only when they came back for food. This is all very exciting for me to be able to watch so up close the VA REBELS - so to quote Norma...
Hey Jo. This site is more informative. Both parents feed.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Bluebird
Jo and Jill, Santa Cruz is up trying out his wings again.
3 eggs still i bluebird nest and two chicks
Thanks Jill!
Going over to SC and watch that little boy for awhile......
Thanks Jill for the bluebird site. I've booked marked so I could read it later. Right now I have my sister on the phone, and trying to watch all the birds.
Va cam back on the nest with chicks flying n and out of it.
It looks like dinnertime in Va.
Proud parent on limb watching nest.
Va is closeup on eating chick in nest.
Jo, isn't Santa Cruz beautiful when he gets his wings out? It won't be long do you think?
Santa Cruz chick resting again.
JO--
Yes, Mr. B is already helping Mrs. B feed the little ones. They feed them twice an hour. Whew!!
Hi Wanda! We still see 3 eggs and the 2 chicks Will you confirm that?
Too dark to watch VA anymore.
Finland chicks are growing! Being fed now. They really blend in with their nest!
SC boy goes down along side of the nest. IWS forum thought he had fledged when they saw the MT nest this morning & then all of a sudden, his head popped up at the bottom of the screen.
Hi Wanda. Missed the hatchings, but have been watching Ms. B and the Kestrels and the Santa Cruz chick trying out his wings. He is really getting some air.
Bluebird parent is off nest, and still looks like two chicks and three eggs
I agree on the bluebird count
Getting dark at NY Kestrel box. Back to bluebird and Santa Cruz
I'm still seeing 2 chicks, a slightly cracked egg and a partridge in a pear tree.
E gads, I didn't realize how late it was getting. Still three eggs and 2 chicks in blue bird nest. Poor Mama Osprey in Finland looked water logged and the Santa Cruz chick looks as if it has settled down for the time being. Guess I'll call it a night.
You all have a restful and peaceful night. Tomorrow is a new day. Good morning Suzanne. Hope your ride in was a good one.
Oh Mits, you are a chuckle a minute. Are you sure you see a crack or is it a piece of the nest over the egg?
Good night to you Mits.
Wait til that big mouth chick opens up you won't see anything. LOL
I think Momma B is calling it a night, not moving much now.
I am going to see if there is anything of interest on tv. I will check in later.
Good Morning Suzanne, in case I don't make it back.
Made cup coffee - got a bowl of ice cream - Son is visiting now
Just saw the same count in BB nest
And how are you feeling this evening, Mits?
lol, like a just hatched bluebird baby, Jo.
Mr and Mrs B were just there and I only saw one of the chicks at that time...this is going to be fun to watch.
A just hatched bluebird can't even hold its head up! All it can do is
open its mouth really wide lol
Wanda said that Mr B helps with the feedings every 2 hrs....
And boy does that one have a big mouth. LOL
YEP, Jo THAT ABOUT DESCIBES ME...
Howdy Mits and Jo!
Jo, you have an interesting piece of mail headed your way :)
HELLO PAULA
And Howdy, Jill and Candy
Hi Paula - got the email
Things like that never cease to
amaze me... Can't wait until I see
Amber at the wedding! It really is a small world out there..
MITS: I couldn't tell if there were only 2 eggs left or 3 - Then the little chick slid down over the 3rd one!
HI LADIES--
Just peeked in on the BB family and still see only 2 babies.
MITS--thanks for the photo. Between my printer not working and the death of my daughter's Mother-in-Law today, I have not been able to watch the nest as much as I would have liked.
JO--Mr. & Mrs. B feed their babies twice every hour. Talk about tired!!
We almost have the morning crew online!
Wanda - Praying your daughter & her husband's family has the faith to get them through this life experience.
We'll keep you updated on the BB.
Jill you stay awake
Candy get your guest out on the couch
out of the computer room
Someone holler at NORMA
AND THEN WE'LL ALL YELL ........
SURPRISE
and scare the coffee right out of Suzanne's hand as she turns on her computer
WANDA, HOW SAD FOR YOUR DAUGHTER AND HER FAMILY SPECIAL PRAYERS TONIGHT FOR HER
Poor Suzanne is going to be blue tomorrow a.m.....watch it Jo, Norma has a cane
Wanda - so sorry top hear that - will keep them in my thoughts...
GOOD EVENING, PEOPLE...
Sorry to hear about the PA fledgling...are those pedestrian bridges glass-sided back there? Just wondering what caused the little guy to fly into it.
I saw the WE cam was up about an hour ago, and at that time I could see only one eaglet in the nest...anybody have an idea of how many have fledged as of now??
I could have sworn I saw the older eaglet at Two Harbors flying yesterday...and you could follow his flight over the nest by watching his brother's head.
Now that 'the plug has been pulled' we'll never know when they flew at that nest.
Why was our cam 'blue screened' when I signed in? I just glance throught the comments and didn't see anything on that.
I probably took so long writing this you've all gone to bed.....
hahahaha.
Jim
We know the little bugger is blue, Jim, Suz is not going to be happy tomorrow, when she misses their early a.m. visit.
She can watch Bluebirds instead!
Hi, Mits, glad to see you're still awake...
Jim
I don't know if I will make it til Suzanne gets here. Too hot to sleep in this house, too tired to stay awake. What to do??????
Wanda-sorry to hear about your son-in-laws loss. We will keep them in our prayers.
And Mema Jo too.
Jim
Jim I watched the VA cam for a long time this evening (before it got dark) It was awesome..I said that I've see first flights and then returns to the nest to eat...but I am really getting an education on JUVIES with the VA camera.....
Jill,
I usually run the A/C on low when it's too hot now, but we didn't have it when I was a kid...
After a few times of tossing and turning most of the night, and being totally exhausted the next day, we discovered that it was at least 15-20 degs. cooler in the back yard (with a breeze), and we would take our sleeping bags out back and get to sleep in pretty short order.
Jim
I would not part with all my ceiling fans... Seems as long as I can feel 'moving air' I am not too uncomfortable.
It looked like the Kent chicks were kissing, but I think they were practicing feeding each other...one pecked at something in the nest before touching beaks with the other.
Jim
Probably saying
Would you taste this please?
When the cameraman gets inventive at VA, you can really get some interesting close-ups and insights into how the juveniles act away from the nest.
Jim
The W E cam looks like a cubist painting right now...can't even tell how many eaglets are there. Can see one white head though.
Jim
Nobody home at either BW nest tonight.
How did you like that pic I sent of the Osprey pair of next season??
Jim
We used to sit on our front steps til 2 or 3 in the morning just to get tired enough to fall asleep inside. I lived in the city, Jim, so our back yard was very tiny, and made of cement.
FINLAND NEST - I think there may be a storm there - I swear I may have seen lightning..... Really bright and Lady Osprey on the chicks reared her head back......
GOODNIGHT ALL Happy blue-screen Tuesday, Suzanne.
JIM that was an awesome picture.
I liked the pic - they looked like a young couple - ya think?
JIM Do go over to Finland
A 63 is resting easy...flaked out... He really looks eager to get airborn, and even though he's behind both Catalina nests timewise, I wouldn't be surprised to see him fledge very soon.
Jim
You could be correct about the lightning, Jo, poor thing looks wet.
I just love that osprey site, she is a real beauty.
Good night, Mits...
Take your war surplus Army cot out back on the concrete if you have trouble sleeping inside.
We had a couple or three of those too.
Sleep well.
Jim
Mama Jo,
I can't get the Finnish cam on I Explorer (probably a security issue), and I don't have AOL open right now.
It's a beautiful nest and a beautiful picture on the cam though. I really like it.
Jim
Looks like all but one eaglet has fledged at WE - they were all back on the nest before lights out tonight...
TH nest last night - 78 was flying over his sister in the nest....too bad we are going to miss them too...
That's ok - It really is a storm and when the lightning strikes - it is held due to the refreshing of the cam. You can see Lady Osprey look relieved afterwards. She is protecting those chicks!!
Night, all - going to fold the last load of laundry and hit the hay....
Yes, it is too bad, Paula. It was really a good shot of them warming up and trying their wings yesterday... I believe the sister was a hair's breadth from taking the big leap into the deep air last night.
Jim
Yeah, Good night, everyone. I should probably get going on stuff around here.
Good Morning, Suzanne, and any other early birds.
Jim
Good Night Everyone
Pleasant dreams and peaceful sleep
Prayers being said for all
Good morning, Suzanne. Sent you some pics of Bluebird babies and the Lady Finland... I will send email before I go to bed so Steve will be aware of the BLUE TUESDAY CAM
Good morning Suzanne and all eaglet watchers out there.!!!!!!
Ok where is Suzanne and everyone else that were supposed to yell SURPRISE to Suzanne this morning. My guest spent the night at the fire station, so I could get in here early.
WANDA, our thoughts and prayers go out to your daughter and her husband's family at this sad time for them.
Ok, where or where is Suzanne? Our nest is still either blue or multicolored dots. Mrs. B is covering her babies for the time being.
Finland nest is looking much drier now than last night and Mama is up and down on her babies.
The storks in Germany are all up and raring to go. One is flapping it's wings or maybe just stretching a little.
Other than that, mostly everything else is darkened.
Good morning, eagle world. So far, very busy day. You ever get up and the day just starts taking off and you gotta hold on for dear life? Well, this is one of those days for me. Geesh, sure hope it slows down a bit! Got here on time, met my boss in the garage right before 4, and we've both been running ever since. I wanna go home!
Morning Jim, and Jo, and Candy, are you really here at this hour? Wow, you sure beat me, this morning! Jo, see the cam is still blue, if you emailed Steve, I won't. Darn! HAD to logon before our visit, and no cam. And they're due any time. Bummer. And we have Bluebird babies? She's on the nest, so I'm anxious to see them. How many hatched so far? Well, never mind, go back and read my mail.
Warm out, gonna be a hot one. 70° at my house right before 2, and 76° here already at 4. But nice, some stars, but then some wispy fog too.
Ok, back on the track. There are 2 owls in Benicia, poor storks are sitting it out in another heavy rainstorm! Welcome to Germany. Parent is on babes in Finland, and Mrs B is on chicks and eggs. I'm anxious to see them!
All have a great eagle day. Eyes to the sky, see the raptors fly!
More wing stretching by one of the storks. I would really love to see one of them take off.
The birds are starting to wake up around my house with their chatter and song, and our main bird, SUZANNE, is still not on.
Haven't been able to get a good look at Mrs. B's nest yet, so don't know if anymore little chicks are there.
No video on Jim's Kestrel cam yet either this morning. Things are looking glum. Guess I will go over and check my email, as OUR cam is still blue with multicolored dots.
Hope Suzanne is ok.
H E L L O....Candy. I'm here. We crossed in cyberspace with our blogs.
Our cam is totally kaput, and the kids are probably there now, so we're gonna miss them today. Bummer!
BW, both nests MT. PA looks foggy, but it wasn't when I came down.
OH Kestral cams are on now!!! Love those cams!
Storks are drowning in the rain! Typical summer day in Germany, but everything over there is eternally green!
Benicia owl cam is not refreshing, and Mrs Fin sure looks a lot dryer than she did last night!
Candy, R U there now? Can you hear me now?
Candy and any others, BRB.
Yes, Suzanne, I am back with you. I think our cam turned blue in celebration of the first blue bird being born yesterday. :)
Glad to see you on the blog and know that you are ok.
Benica cam is now on. Just one lonely barn owl present in the nest box and is he being noisy and flapping his wings from time to time. He is probably calling to his siblings; not understanding that it is still nighttime there and he should be out prowling around.
He must have gotten his food early and come on back home. He looks so lonely and forlorn.
Now he is either flown the coupe or stopped jabbering.
Hi Candy, yeah, I guess a nice celebration in honor of first Bluebird being hatched, but I'm ready now for our cam to return to normal! We missed Lib and Belle's visit this morning, doubt that they are still there.
We have an osprey in BW, though! And I saw where Lisa updated the eagle cam, they're gonna keep it on until end of July now. I'm glad, since the kids keep coming back to eat!
I LOVE those NY Kestrals, that cam is also too cool. Think they turn it off at night, and turn it back on in the morning. They may turn it on at 5:30, didn't check what time it came back on today.
Looks like the sun may be coming out in Germany, and looks like the storks are growing their own herbs
Those baby ospreys in Finland are really growing fast. I can't believe how big they are already. Mom looks a lot drier today and is moving around the nest more.
I'm looking forward to watching the Va eagle nest today. They had some good close up shots of eagles on there yesterday.
Glad to see that BW is going to remain on line a little longer. People do like to follow up on thier nests, even tho the chicks have hatched and fledged. Like you said, they do come back from time to time and are fun to watch.
The poor lonely Benicia owl must have gone off to join his siblings, as all is quiet on their western front now.
Geesh, typing that last comment, and someone came in my cube, and I was holding down a key, got the beep, and then couldn't use another key on my keyboard. Had to totally reboot! Man, it's gonna be one of THOSE days! Now I need to go reopen all my cams!
Norfolk cam is on, but it is still quite darke there. Just starting to be able to see the tree with nest and branches.
Parent and mantling eaglet in BW!!!
It will be ok Suzanne. It is only Tuesday, so don't fret. Things will work out. Not much doing now anyhow. Maybe we'll get to see the other 3 eggs hatch in Mrs. B's nest today.
Remember, you are up "with the birds" and they aren't even rattling around too much this morning yet. :)
Parent left, eaglet no longer mantling. Can't see what he has though, but head just went down to eat!
LOL, yeah, I have to remember that, Candy. I usually get up before they do, but I enjoy watching them wake up and start their day.
BW eaglet just showed us his/her fish. And Finland chicks are getting fed too.
I have been trying to figure out what BW is eating too.
Norfolk cam is moving around now trying to find any traces of their eagles. That is one nice cam they have. Now if it would just have sound with it I guess we have to be happy with what we get. At least the screen isn't blue. :(
Finland Mama must be out fishing. Just the two chicks in nest now.
Mama Kestrel was just back to see her chicks. They are just gorgeous. I just love their fuzzy little bodies.
Suzanne, not much doing right at the moment, so I think I am going to take a break. BBL
LOL, I do too, Candy. They are so cute. Little fuzzballs. BW eaglet got on the side of his meal a little while ago, and I saw a fish end and tail, but he's sure holding it close, isn't he? That bottom cam on the Kestrals, those guys are up by the entrance hole and back down. Wonder how soon they'll fledge? And osprey just left BW nest. Well, that was quick. Osprey back, just don't know if it's the same one.
Ok, Candy, talk to you later.
Parent just arrived back in Finland.
Make that Mom just arrived back in Finland.
Well, Candy is not the only one to take a break.
BW eagle nest MT, 1 osprey hanging around. PA falcon ledge MT, but showing very foggy. Kinda wierd looking. Parent took off from tree in Kent, and kids are awake, but they haven't gotten up yet. Stork chicks are just hanging around and walking around, Mrs Finland feeding chicks, they are just so cute. There have been 1 or 2 owls in and out at Benicia. Kestral chicks are waiting for something to eat, and the older chicks are trying to look out entrance. Mrs. B still on chicks and eggs, and she's not getting up when she moves. Closed our cam, so no idea, I presume it's still blue.
I haven't checked the Albuquerque burrowing owls in a while, so opened them. Man, that vegatation has really grown up. Not sure you'd be able to see the little owls anymore or not.
Kent eaglets are waiting patiently for breakfast. Osprey still on edge of nest, and poor Puget Sound eagle is standing by himself watching the sun rise.
GOOD MORNING SUZ--
Had a very busy morning so I am late checking in.
Just checked in at Kent and the sunrise is so beautiful and brilliant that those babes need sunglasses.
Mrs. B still has only 2 babies. Hope nothing is wrong with the eggs. They should have hatched yesterday. Must be LAZY chicks.
I didn't send you any photos because my computer was acting up. I know some of the girls sent you some and to me also. Aren't friends GREAT?
Morning, Wanda. Hope they'res nothing wrong with them. Maybe they're just late bloomers, and will hatch later today. Man, that sunrise is very bright, isn't it? Almost hurts your eyes to look at it through the screen! Puget Sound gets a nice sunrise too, but you don't need sunglasses to view that one!
LOL, Wanda, they sure are! I got 2 of the newborn Bluebird chicks! Made me smile today, loved them. I was hoping they would hatch soon, I thought they were supposed to start hatching this weekend, and I was disappointed when they didn't, but thrilled this morning when I came in! They are so cute, little bodies, huge wide open mouths! Feed me... Feed me. too cute.
I miscalculated on the hatching date. The first egg was laid on June 7 and the 17 days it takes for incubation would make the hatching date june 24 or 25th.
Talking about their big mouths; Mom & Dad feed them 2 times every hour. We saw Dad & Mom in the nest shortly after the second one hatched. Sweet picture.
