Ranson Police Chief Bill Roper said Monday that, at about 5 p.m., a lone gunman driving a pickup truck entered the drive-thru of the Potomac Marketplace branch of City National Bank in Ranson and demanded an undisclosed amount of money.

"When the teller realized what was going on, she didn't give him any money, so he drove away. Then a pursuit ensued after that," Roper said.

After the attempted bank robbery was reported, the Ranson Police Department issued a "be on the look out" bulletin to surrounding police agencies that included the description of the suspect's vehicle and the suspect, who was reportedly wearing a ski mask and gloves.

At the time, Shirley was on the W.Va. 9 bypass when he saw a white truck traveling west on old W.Va. 9.

"It didn't fit the description, but my hunch was that it possibly could be the vehicle because it appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed," Shirley said.

After spotting the suspicious vehicle, Shirley exited the bypass via the Kearneysville exit in an attempt to intercept the vehicle. As he approached the traffic light at the old Kearneysville Sheetz, the truck, which didn't have a license plate, passed by.

Shirley then attempted to pull the smaller, white Dodge pickup truck over, but the driver, later identified as Haines, sped up to speeds approaching 90 mph as he fled toward Berkeley County.

"He was passing cars on double yellow lines and passing cars on curves. It was obvious to me then that this was the person that just attempted to rob the bank down there, because he wouldn't stop," Shirley said.

Once the pursuit began, agencies in Jefferson County and Berkeley County were notified and joined in. As the pursuit entered Berkeley County, it reached speeds of 90 mph. At one point, the suspect turned around near the parking lot of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and headed back toward Jefferson County, Shirley said.

Good morning all you lovely ladies and gents. I sure would love to see an eagle or two today in that nest. I have to admit that I am getting more and more discouraged every day.

We had an impressive pile of trash as well and Tom burnt most of the paper from the presents. Lots of food generates lots of trash!!

Hope everyone has a great day today! Congrats Lynne and Steve! Love and hugs! I am lurking and trying to stay on task with work this morning! Ya'll holler if I miss something!

NCSuzan said...

Happy 2nd Anniversary to Lynne and Steve!!
Also trash day for us who have an admiral pile of boxes and stuff sitting at the curb. Thank you garbage people.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

I think it is pretty funny that somebody tried to rob a drive-thru??

NCSuzan said...

OK, call me stupid, it's alright. I started reading Wanda's account of yesterday's bank robbery....she mentions Shirley, her driving route, following the truck...and I am thinking that wow, this Shirley is brave. First calling 911 at the bus accident and now following attempted bank robbers. If But that had me convinced. guess it is still to early for me to be rational in the head!

As the pursuit continued, the suspect turned left at the old Kearneysville Sheetz and traveled into Shepherdstown before turning onto W.Va. 45.

"It was really getting dangerous. I was worried," Shirley said. "He was doing everything he could to shake us, but we stayed with him."

As the pursuit reached speeds in excess of 115 mph, the pursuit re-entered Berkeley County via W.Va. 45 where Deputies T.A. Sherman, Myers, C.S. Welcome and C. Merson of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department had responded.

NCSuzan said...

If....Wanda had not mentioned Sheetz.....

Costume Lady said...

Sherman intercepted the pursuit at the intersection of Winebrenner Road and Gosling Marsh Road.

Shortly afterward, Myers deployed stop sticks at the intersection of Winebrenner Road and Files Cross Road. The spike strips flattened all four of the suspect's tires. The vehicle then turned onto Files Cross Road and, after traveling about a quarter mile, turned into a cornfield. The suspect then drove through the field until he reached the edge of a wooded area and stopped.

"This guy was just driving like a maniac. We couldn't just let him go and we stuck with him. This is one bank robber that didn't get away," Shirley said.

stronghunter said...

Yeah, I stay pretty busy. And Judie is guarding the Sheetz.

stronghunter said...

I am glad they got that guy, Wanda. He is definitely dangerous.

Costume Lady said...

I do wish Gene would have let me follow the action...I could have gotten some photos. Told him I would drive myself up there and use my eagle cane on him if necessary. He said that cane was of no concern to a man trying to protect his wife. What more could I say:)

stronghunter said...

Oh my, Wanda. Stay safe. Listen to Gene.

stronghunter said...

Trying to protect his wife?

Costume Lady said...

I threatened to use the cane on CAPT. GENE...

hedgie said...

This was the apparently the same guy who already robbed two other local drive-throughs (remember when I said that I would have fired the teller who acquiesced???). THIS teller was smart! He/she refused to give him the money----smart cookie!!

hedgie said...

I think we are being stood up by Lib and Belle. The fact that they WERE doing nestorations Sun., tho', makes me quite hopeful!!

stronghunter said...

So he needed to protect himself?

stronghunter said...

Perhaps they finished what they needed to do while the cam was down, Lynn.

hedgie said...

My can was so full of pre-Christmas stuff that the garbage with the turkey carcass wouldn't fit Sunday night. Couldn't put that kind of stuff next to the can or the critters would have gotten into it....so Shannon and Christie took it with them and put it in their big commercial can that their town provides!

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

And there they are!!

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

THERE THEY ARE!!

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

That was close to a 40-minute visit.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

They moved a couple of sticks around but nothing major Paula.

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

I think they had lunch, moved a stick or two, but not a whole lot of nestorations.

hedgie said...

No, BEagle----longer than that---about At least 50 mins!!!!

Mema Jo said...

Dana - bless your heart - there you are praying at the noon hour and here we are watching our eagles as you pray.

Whoo Hoo! Hopefully we will see them at dinner/supper time!

GOOD MORNING, All.

It was cool overnight and will get up only to the mid 60's today, but we are due for another big rain storm followed by some real cold. That's what the Weather Channel says.

hedgie said...

FYI: Today, tomorrow and Thurs. are the final 2010 deer hunting days at NCTC. Find it hard to believe that it would be during the work day, so it's probably night hunting. Keep cam up after dark and we might see flashes when guns are fired.

glo said...

Happy Anniversary to Lynne and Steve Stopping in briefly to check up on everyone and say Hi. My days are much busier now for a while which is a very good thing. DEx is havign soem skin problems though which has me concerned. I did take a flea off of him a day or so after we got here. He is very allergic to fleas. Has had a new sore from digging every day but I don't see any more fleas or eggs. I did give him a bath in dish soap this morning. I use Frontline plus on him and have for years. Its always worked fine but my son says they have switched to something called Revolution here as the Frontline wasn't working for them anymore. I am wondering if local fleas have become resistant to the Frontline. Anyway I guess a few more days will tell me more as I watch him and his skin. Just saying if it continues we may go home early or we may visit a local vet. At his age I really hate to change the flea routine to something I have never used before.

BEagle said...

What did Belle and Lib leave behind in the nest?

Are those pine cones?

BEagle said...

Missed the eagle at BWO. The BWE nest certainly does look good. All fresh and pretty.

stronghunter said...

Hi,

See that I missed an eagle visit. I have been doing some cleaning and tidying, then talking with the dishwasher repair guy. He did not find anything major wrong, just cleaned out the openings in the wands or whatever you call those things that spin around. Then we tried a deep coffee mug that had not been cleaned before and it came out clean.

He will come back if there are additional problems within a month. We will see.

I washed a batch of dishes by hand this morning so that they wouldn't be in the way.

Watching the nest now . . .

stronghunter said...

It does look like they left something in the nest.

stronghunter said...

My turn to see the eagles. Come on Belle and Lib!

Ms Bookworm said...

Hi, Everyone!
Stopping by very quickly to let you know I did NOT drop off the face of the earth! We are having problems with our phone lines due to all the rain we had. Our land line phone is kaput--has been for nearly a week now.
Troubles off and on with our modem, so iffy internet. Trying to get a call through to MCI to schedule a service call. At LEAST a 10-minute wait time to get someone! HAVE tried all their suggestions to test the phone line, and still no dial tone. Incoming callers just get ring after ring, and no answer machine. Frustrating! Better go try to call them again. Will, hopefully, be back later tonight.

All of us are fine, including Emma. She suddenly looks SO much bigger! Will try to get new pictures for you to see. Need to call MCI while Emma's asleep. Back later, I hope!
Take care, everyone! :o]

Mema Jo said...

Lynne, if we see flashes from guns being shot - It is too darn close for comfort

Ms Bookworm said...

Oops!!!
Pardon my manners!!!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, LYNNE AND STEVE!!!
...and many more for you two love birds!! Hope your day is special!!!

OK--gotta run now. Back later, I hope! :o]

hedgie said...

Shooting outside our WalMart at the Mall.........
Locals, stay away from the Mall.

Mema Jo said...

I am thinking that the Bragg Bunch has arrived at their destination. FB will
probably tell me before a phone call comes through.

hedgie said...

Can't make out what is in the nest, BEagle.....might be turtle shells that nobody retrieved for Jo!
Glo, I would suggest taking Dex to a vet there sooner rather than later. Could be that just a shot of Cortisone would take care of the reaction to the fleas. They are a big problem down south....so maybe the Frontline isn't effective....vet can advise about switching to Revolution.

hedgie said...

Shooter was a teenager in a vehicle with other teens. Criminy. Literally, huh??

Mema Jo said...

San Diego zoo has a brand new 250-300 lb baby elephant. He is one cute boy - has a 3 yr old brother.

hedgie said...

Gunshot victim is also a teen.....shot in the groin.

We also have a local high school soccer player seriously injured in an auto acc. last night.....is in Fairfax (same hospital that Margy's sister and Judie were in---and where my dad was on the board, and I did lots of my clinicals) in a coma due to head injury. :(

Mema Jo said...

I think it is some leaves in the nest.
They looked greenish at one point in time.

Mema Jo said...

Today when I open the Live Feed -
No commercial - it turns on right away.
Nice - I hope it continues to do that.

BEagle said...

Stonghunter posted her thoughts about the eagles about twenty minutes before they showed up at the nest.

BEagle said...

I think Ed took off with the swiffer lady.

I have a feeling that Ed will be replaced with someone else. I always did like the singing animals.

paula eagleholic said...

If you didn't know any better at BWE, you would swear the nest is above water....what a pretty blue color from the snow....

Happy Anniversary to Lynne & Steve!!!!!

I have a Tale of Four Wings!!~~~~
While glancing out the Vis. Ctr. window at the Park, I saw two large, dark birds flying toward the other shore. It was almost impossible to identify them, but then,a brown circle was seen spinning counter-clockwise and having four wings!!!!!They must have locked talons and did the spin!!!Only eagles do that and they might have been juvies.

magpie said...

WAS, two

magpie said...

wow, Loretta....musta been something to see

hedgie said...

Hoping that visits will be much more frequent! We had a breakfast visit on Sun., lunch and dinner times today!!!! WhooHoo!!!

Wish we would hear from Judie/Darth and Dana about Dr. visits today......

http://gloandtheeaglemomsters.blogspot.com/2010/12/dec-28-2010-with-lib-and-belle.html" Lib and Belle Dec 28 pm visit"

Sorry not sure I made link exactly right but hopefully it will work. Otherwise click my name and go to NCTC Eagles of Shepherdstown WV and it will be the first post since it is new.

Mema Jo said...

Thanks Glo for the video clip of our Royal Couples visit today.

glo said...

OK well link isn't exactly right. I have lost my touch and don't have the info in GA to look it up. BUT you can copy and paste the link into browser or clicking my name and choosing my NCTC Eagles of Shepherdstown WV will also work.

Lynn I don't think I am going to switch flea protection for Dex it just scares me as old as he is. We will make do for a while. He may get lots of dishsoap baths or maybe he won't need them. He hasn't been perfect but has been much more comfortable today. Might be from a flea at the motel we stayed at, "it was pet friendly". Maybe bit him a few times before it died etc. I have his next dose of Frontline Plus here with me. He gets it on the 9th. If it doesn't work, chances are I will monitor weather for travel and Dex and I will head home a couple of weeks early.

glo said...

YW Mema Jo I know we are all wanting to see them and I happened to come into the Blog right as Megan said they were there so started the video. We need their visits right now for sure. We obviously as previously mentioned do not currently have sound on our live cam though.

hedgie said...

Too dark now to see anything , if they should return. :(

paula eagleholic said...

Wow an evening visit working on the nest.

hedgie said...

Glo, sure hate to think that you may have to cut your visit short! And weather reports are becoming more unreliable!
Good video---glad you got to see L&B!

PA Nana said...

Thanks Glo. I missed both visits today but relived them via your video. Wonderful to see them again.

I don't know the particulars yet...70 dogs have been seized here in Berkeley Co. Fosters needed!
Standard poodles with purebred puppies 4-5 weeks old, shihtzus, yorkies, bichon and maltese.
Animal Control can be reached at 304-582-2578. Fosters needed tonight if possible!

stronghunter said...

Just posted my picture of Belle and Lib's visit this afternoon.

stronghunter said...

Oh my, Lynn. I hope they can find someone to take care of those dogs.

Mema Jo said...

Lynn that is quite a mixure of breeds at one place. I hope they aren't in too ill health!

hedgie said...

They must be healthy, Jo, or they wouldn't be releasing to foster homes. Still waiting to hear what happened.

Mema Jo said...

Bragg Bunch had arrived this afternoon safe and sound. Christine feels the townhouse is 'small' - Probably comparing with German housing which is spacious as was her New York housing. Right now she is very appreciative of having housing as soon as they arrived.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY LYNNE AND STEVE.

Mema Jo said...

I sure did Lynn - Cozy abode!
I am so glad they sold the German Schrunk in Germany where it fits into those large rooms. It was beautiful and really was a storage unit in itself. So many military bring them home not thinking of the ceiling height in our USA homes or how to reassemble them.

hedgie said...

Never heard of a shrunk, Jo!!!!

hedgie said...

Yep, something like that is BIG!!!!!

paula eagleholic said...

Is this what it is, Jo? Or similar?

schrank

–noun
(in Pennsylvania Dutch furniture) a two-door clothes cabinet one side of which has drawers and shelves and the other side an open space for hanging clothes.

Mema Jo said...

Take the 'c' out of what I spelled.
Not Schrunk but German Shrunk

Rustic Wall Units
Some people may also call it a German Shrunk, entertainment center or simply an entertainment wall unit!

hedgie said...

Paula, here is what I found:
Schrunks

Mema Jo said...

The reason for these wall units is that in Germany their homes have no
closets and so this takes the place of storage.
An awesome 8 pc. "shrunk" brought over from Germany years ago is perfect to fill up that bare wall in your home! It is horrible trying to put them together once disassembled.
ALSO:
The first piece of this Schrank, pronounced Shrunk, we saw was one of the lower doors - Maybe I was remembering correctly about Schrank.

magpie said...

I like your name for the Germany Gang, Jo - - - now the Bragg Bunch....

Terrible Tues TV Night - reruns

Costume Lady said...

In another week or so, Jo, Tuesday will be TERRIFIC TUESDAY once again. Can't wait! A few good new ones coming too:)

Costume Lady said...

Soup Kitchen was such fun tonight. The meal wasn't too time consuming to fix and we had a lot of time on our hands while we waited on our guests to come. So, while we waited, we sat around the table and had coffee and laughed our fool heads off at each others shortcomings:) Then, we got busy. We had a lot of new faces tonight and served 25 meals:)

Costume Lady said...

I Can't find anything from Dana or Judie about their doctor's visit today...did I miss it?

Judie said...

Ding dong. Ding dong.

Hello? May I come in, please?

Gosh, I'm kinda tired after guarding the Sheetz store while Shirley chased the bank robber at high speed. She just had all the fun. Amazing what she does in her spare time.

The good news is I was told to "start walking." The not-so-good news is that I have to learn how. Will have therapy for the next 4 to 6 weeks and I can use a walker at home. Have taken a few tentative steps but the foot is really painful and the calf muscle has atrophied. Ankle still healing and very vulnerable. Still, it was good news and combined with two nice visits from Belle and Lib, I think I may be ready to rejoin the world.

I've taken some meds so plan to get some sleep. Will return tomorrow if my security code still works. Turning my light off but will leave the night light on for others coming in, headed back the hallway, to the tub, to the recliner, or just wandering around in the dark.

P.S. I am so very encouraged by the news of Kailey and Brandon. Bless them both.

paula eagleholic said...

Good news Judie. We miss you. NOT that we don't like Darth, he is quite comical, but we miss you!

paula eagleholic said...

Wow, those are big. Much bigger than I thought.

hedgie said...

Judie, Judie, Judie.....welcome "home"!!! All sounds good except for the atrophy!! Hopefully the PT will do the trick real fast. I know what you mean about the unstable feeling......those first steps are SO tentative and scary and yes, painful!! But it gets better every day!! And you know you have us in your cheering section!
Sounds like your b-ball boys needed YOU cheering last night----dreadful loss!

Jo and Wanda----I'm concerned about the Tues. night line-up: that new dance show w/ Paula Abdul premieres next Tues. night.....so what is it going to bump???? Argh!

hedgie said...

25 people tonight is great, Wanda!!!!!

stronghunter said...

Yay, Judie is back.

I will return in a moment or so.

NatureNut said...

Wow! Judie was among us. Great news on your improvements!

Thx, Glo for the film!!
Congrats to Wanda & Gene for another job well done!!

We're watching Sunday Nite Football and one cat stopped and looked at small bump on carpet. Then I saw it MOVE---SB!!!

hedgie said...

Jo, I posted a Mai pic on my Lair!

Costume Lady said...

Lowreeda knocked me off of here:)

I was saying, Judie it is so good to hear directly from you. We have missed you so much. Yes, you need to keep an eye on the Sheetz stores..a lot has been happening at them here lately.
Tell Darth that we enjoy hearing from him and to keep in touch with a joke or two, now and then. He is a Dadster now:)

hedgie said...

Wanda.....noticed last week that the Kearneysville Sheetz is gone. Guess with the new one there at Short Rd. that they didn't really need the older one----it was small compared to their new places.

hedgie said...

Judie even has her grand sense of humor back!!!!

Costume Lady said...

WV Mountaineers are playing, but, I really cannot tell what is going on. I guess I'll go watch it for a while.

stronghunter said...

So glad to hear that you are getting better, Judie.

How much time do you have left in your winter break?

Costume Lady said...

Lynn, I guess they closed the Sheetz in Kearneysville because of the new Rt 9 diverting traffic away from them. Prior to the opening of the new road, they were always busy.

hedgie said...

Yeah, Wanda....imagine that most of the old road traffic is headed for VA, IRS, Coast Guard or Quebecor (or whatever it's called now), and the new store is closer to them than the K. store.

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

What a great eagle day this has been!

Costume Lady said...

Yes, it has, Sharon...hope to see them again in the morning around
7-7:30.

NatureNut said...

Was talking to Greg K., our Park naturalist, & he led the Xmas bird count group in that area. Not sure of the exact square miles. BUT, they counted 12 eagles--the highest ever!!!! He saw 7 near where he lives about 6 miles down river from the Park!!

I am back - watched a tv show and just marveled at the amount of imagination that must go into these shows. It was just like playing a video game. Weird!

I saw Mai and she is beautiful Lynn.
What is her height going to be. Those legs look pretty long.

JUDIE So glad you are here. I know what you mean about learning to walk all over again - you really have to focus on what you are doing -
but it does all come back with practice.

Mema Jo said...

I am so thankful that our eagle watching days are coming back to normal
I pray it lasts and that we have a great season this year.

Evening all! Just popping in to say thank you all for the anniversary wishes! Steve ended up having to work all day, and I had Irvine this morning and babysitting tonight. didn' get home til almost 9:30. Very tired...first FULL day of doing things in over a week. Not a terribly exciting anniversary!

And YAY YAY YAY I am so happy to read of the eagle reports!!!! Sorry I wasn't here to see in person, but hopefully I'll see them tomorrow before I leave again for Irvine, or when I get back tomorrow evening!

Glad to see Judie back!

I'm heading for bed so prayers for all and have a good night!

Jo....the new show has to be booting one of our regulars out on Tues. evening......there's only 3 hrs. and if it takes up one----my question is what is happening to one of our favs????

Mema Jo said...

Now you got me worrying
Won't be able to go to sleep until
I figure out which one.
(I'm kidding)But I will keep my
eyes open on the ones we watch.

Night

Lynne, glad you survived your day!! Bet you sleep good tonight!

I don't think the SB's are EVER going to be gone!!

Mai's legs ARE long. And her hind feet look like jack rabbits' feet!! We all think she has lab in her. Fearful that she may try to jump the fence. Shannon came up with a good idea....put one of the invisible fence things just outside of the real one. Gotta check into it soon.
LOL----she uses her front paws almost like a cat does!

Judie, great to see you post and hope your pt is easy and you are quickly back on both feet.

Lynn, Mai looks cute but I wonder how strong she will get. How large will she get?

Wanda, another great night at the soup kitchen. You and Gene are so generous with you time and effort. You will be blessed.

Too much action down your way. Stay safe everyone.

When will those d*#n bugs leave me alone? 3 tonight after one landed on my elbow. I think the ones I flush are finding their way back "home."

Loretta, I envy your sightings. Pix please.

My baby sister is here from TN. She was 15 miles from Martinsville when I last heard from her and her TOA was 9:30pm. Daddy will be so glad to see her and family. I'll hear from her after she gets settled in a few days. There's lots of family here that want an audience with her so I have to wait for my turn.

Is anyone watching the Eagle/Viking game? They showed Brett Favre on the sideline and I swear it looked like he was chewing tobacco. Anyone else?

PA Nana said...

Anyway, going to watch the game and hope the Vikings beat Vick. He still gets my dander up.

Have a good night and prayers for all needs and wants.

Diann, since we don't know anything about Mai's daddy, we don't know. Standard ShaPei avg. 40 lbs. and 18". Time will tell!!! She is leaner than a Pei and the legs are already longer!!

Sorry you can't get one of the first audiences with your sis!! But enjoy your time when you do!!

hedgie said...

Time for me to call it a day, too.
Rest well, dear friends. Here's hoping for more eagle visits on the morrow!!!!
Prayers for all.

Helloooo! Guess everyone has gone to bed. What a day! But first let me know how excited I am about the two nest visits today. Was in the car headed to Denton when I saw it on facebook then on the blog. Did not know about the second visit until we got home tonight. Can hardly wait to see them! Maybe tomorrow!

And Judie was on! Wahoo! Sounds good, Judie, just take your time and try not to get frustrated or down. It will take a while. We are just so happy when you get on, we miss you!

This was really a rough day, but Laurel and I got a lot accomplished. We got the kitchen cleaned out at Fayes and then started on the garage. Laurel takes what she can use, gave me a few things, and the rest will go in an estate sale of some kind. Really do not know about estate sales, but it would be wonderful if someone could come in and take care of it. There is a lot of furniture as well. And, wish we were knowledgeable enough to know if pretty little dishes were valuable or not. There is a ton of that kind of stuff. We took three car loads of stuff to Laurel's.

Anyway, going to stay home tomorrow and then go back up there Thursday. Laurel needs to stay home as well...tend to the boys, buy groceries. Then we will both get back at it Thurs.

Lolly said...

Heading to bed now. Have been checking on line for people that conduct estate sales.

Nite all! Sweet eagle dreams!
