If you want to run winamp along w/ wmp, you have to go in and uncheck winamp as the default player...then I go in and put in the url for maine. I still have to go in to put the url into WMP for Santa Cruz...yes it's tricky...you may want to try it again when you have a little bit of time to fool with it...I am using WMP11 at home w/ XP, and at work w/ Windows 2000

Jo, can you send me which Spy thing you use. One of the spybots said I had 593 parasite and the other had almost 700. They both advised I buy the program. I get Mcafee free thru Comcast, but it tells me I have no infected files???

That's what I have, Paula, Windows XP and til tonight had WMP11, this is where I get myself into trouble, when I'm doing things I don't understand.:(. Tha't ok, I'm been working on different things all night and my mind has turned to mush. Need to look at it when I have several more hours, but probably not this weekend.

paula eagleholic said...

Mits,
Mcafee is virus protection...spybot is for popups and spyware. Another good free programs for spyware is called adaware. Also Ewido is only $30, but one of the best out there...it does offer a free trial.

Sent you mail Mits - Google page - select the 4th one on list. They won't try to get you to buy it!

Enjoy Chaucer's Parliament of Fowles, one of the origins of Valentines Day. Tradition has it that the birds choose their mates on that day.

sandyshaw said...

I forgot to paste.

Bartolomaeus Anglicus:
Doves

Geoffrey Chaucer
The Parliament
of Fowles

Bartolomaeus Anglicus:
Sparrows

Whan I was come ayen unto the place
That I of spak, that was so swote and grene,
Forth welk I tho, my-selven to solace.
Tho was I war wher that ther sat a quene
That, as of light the somer-sonne shene
Passeth the sterre, right so over mesure
She fairer was than any creature.

And in a launde, upon an hille of floures,
Was set this noble goddesse Nature;
Of braunches were hir halles and hir boures,
Y-wrought after hir craft and hir mesure;
Ne ther nas foul that cometh of engendrure,
That they ne were prest in hir presence,
To take hir doom and yeve hir audience.

For this was on seynt Valentynes day,
Whan every foul cometh ther to chese his make,
Of every kinde, that men thenke may;
And that so huge a noyse gan they make,
That erthe and see, and tree, and every lake
So ful was, that unnethe was ther space
For me to stonde, so ful was al the place.

And right as Aleyn, in the Pleynt of Kinde,
Devyseth Nature of aray and face,
In swich aray men mighten hir ther finde.
This noble emperesse, ful of grace,
Bad every foul to take his owne place,
As they were wont alwey fro yeer to yere,
Seynt Valentynes day, to stonden there.

(...)

What shulde I seyn? of foules every kinde
That in this world han fethres and stature,
Men mighten in that place assembled finde
Before the noble goddesse Nature,
And everich of hem did his besy cure
Benignely to chese or for to take,
By hir acord, his formel or his make.

But to the poynt -- Nature held on hir honde
A formel egle, of shap the gentileste
That ever she among hir werkes fonde,
The moste benigne and the goodlieste;
In hir was every vertu at his reste,
So ferforth, that Nature hir-self had blisse
To loke on hir, and ofte hir bek to kisse.

Nature, the vicaire of thalmighty lorde,
That hoot, cold, hevy, light, and moist and dreye
Hath knit by even noumbre of acorde,
In esy vois began to speke and seye,
`Foules, tak hede of my sentence, I preye,
And, for your ese, in furthering of your nede,
As faste as I may speke, I wol me spede.

Ye knowe wel how, seynt Valentynes day,
By my statut and through my governaunce,
Ye come for to chese -- and flee your way --
Your makes, as I prik yow with plesaunce.
But natheles, my rightful ordenaunce
May I not lete, for al this world to winne,
That he that most is worthy shal beginne.
(ll. 295-322, 365-392)

The Riverside Chaucer

When I was returned unto the garden that I spake of, so sweet and green, forth I walke to solace me. Then was I ware how there sat a queen who was exceeding fair over every other creature, as the brilliant sun passes the stars in brightness.

This noble goddess Nature was set upon a flowery hill in a verdant glade. All her halls and bowers were wrought of branches after the art and measure of Nature. Nor was there any bird that comes of procreation that was not ready in her presence, to hear and receive her judgement.

For this was Saint Valentine's day, when every bird of every kind that men can think on comes there to choose his mate. And they made an exceeding great noise; and earth and sea and the trees and all the lakes were so full that there was scarce room for me to stand, so full was the place.

And even as Alan, in the Complaint of Nature, describes Nature in her features and attire, so might men find her in reality. This noble empress, full of grave, bade every bird take his station, as they were wont to stand over on Saint Valentine's day from year to year.

(...)

What more shall I say? Men might find assembled in that place before the noble goddess Nature birds of every sort in this world that have feathers and being. And each by her command was diligent in tenderly choosing his mate.

But to the point: Nature held on her hand a formal eagle, the noblest in shape that she ever found amongst her works, the gentlest and goodliest; in her every noble trait so had its seat that Nature herself rejoiced to look upon her and to kiss her beak many times.

Nature, vicar of the Almighty Lord, who has knit in harmony of exact number hot, cold, heavy, light, moist, and dry, began to speak in a gentle voice: 'Birds, take heed of what I say; and for your welfare and to further your needs I will hasten as fast as I can speak.

Ye well know how on Saint Valentine's day, by my statute and through mine ordinance, ye come to choose your mates, as I prick you with sweet pain, and then fly on your way. But I may not, to win all this world, depart from my just order, that he shall begin who is most worthy.

GOOD AFTERNOON/EVENING, EVERYBODY...

Mits, and company, there seems to be a slight misunderstanding of what various softwares do.

This isn't going to be very technical because I don't know that much...

McAfee, etc., are primarily antivirus concerns (also deal in trojans, etc., which deranged people spread on the Internet to destroy people's and corporations' computers.

Adware and spyware (which occasionally can destroy your computer too) are parasitic softwares (often associated with popups), which advertisers, and so forth, attach to your computer when you visit sites on the Inet, in order to monitor your usage of the computer for their own monetary gain. These can slow up your computer by recording and sending information to their sites.

You should probably do some research on the various boogers they have (start with Wikipedia), but my initial point was antivirus and antispy, antiadware, softwares are NOT the same things, and we need both kinds of protection ... plus a very good firewall.

You can either buy software from McAfee or Norton or others, or you can search the INet for free software. (Be careful of "shareware" which can carry adware, etc.)

It's pretty murky stuff, but essentially there are a bunch of berserk control freaks out there trying to get some kind of insane thrill out of taking over your computer, but you can get software to keep them out most of the time.

Mits, you weren't getting conflicting reports. McAfee was right saying you didn't have any viruses, and spybot was right saying you had hundreds of parasite files.

As soon as you get the parasites deleted, your computer should start working a lot freer and easier.

Got to go to Albertson's and get a new soap box now....

Jim

Sandy thank you so much. I love Chaucer and love teaching Chaucer. What a coincidence!!!!!!!!!!! I had gotten out some of old English Lit textbooks and was just reading The Nun's Priest's Tale. Do you like Boccaccio Have you read The Decameron. Good stuff. donna

Mauley said...

Sandy what are you going to do with WAX 500 lbs

sandyshaw said...

Yes Mauley, I've read the Decameron. And I have a recording of Canterbury Tales in the original English. It's so liquid and beautiful, I listen to it every April. I've always had an affinity for Chaucer because his father was in the wine business and so is my husband.

Good nite, Mits!! How was that ball game,Jo? Meeting was with the mayor concerning the farmer's market. Think it went well, town wants to have more input concerning the market, can be a good thing, just had some concerns about losing control of our market. Think we will be able to work together to create a good buzz about market and perhaps improve it.
