My Son-In-Law was a police officer at the time of his injury. He was trying to arresnt someone and the perp sliced his knee with a samauri sword and badly wounded his canine helper.
Good luck, Steve...sure all will be fine. It's considered such a "minor" procedure nowadays that you can't even get much time off work for it!!! Did you know Blake Weirich when he was at NCTC??
It's the second knee injury I've had. First time was an acl injury, very violent while skiing in Montana. Not sure when I did this one and it's the other knee.
Sissy,, if you were a lady panda pet you could let us into all the secrets of whats going on at the moment pet,,,,,, Because Mei isn't for telling,, she is playing with us all,,
Now she is after biccies out of her ball,, now is that a Lady Panda about to give birth ??????
I hear ya MEI! Just in case you didn't read this on the NZoo page about "What If" --
What to Expect if Mei Is Expecting We wanted to let our pandas' fans know our plans for the panda cams and exhibit if Mei Xiang gives birth to a cub this year. The web cams will be turned off if we believe a birth is imminent. We will turn them back on soon after the birth but we cannot say exactly when. (We may think a birth is imminent and later learn that Mei experienced a pseudopregnancy.) If Mei has a cub, the indoor panda habitat will be closed for several weeks to months. The outdoor portion of the Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat will be open to the public. We will work as expeditiously as possible to share all the news with you.
Costume Lady said... OH, MY DEAR ROBYN, Before I forget....HAPPY BIRTHDAY. I hope you are able to spend this day doing your favorite things..Bird Watching or being with your SPECIAL GUY!
Please tell Tori that I do have White Face Make-up.
Hi All,, this is the latest report from Loch Garten,,,,
Another week has passed at the Osprey centre here at Loch Garten, with its usual dramas and excitment. Nethy and Deshar, our two chicks are now 10 weeks old and have been perfecting the art of flying. They are flying further afield and are away from the nest for longer periods of time, which makes spotting them from the centre more tricky!
There was quite a bit of excitment in the centre on Friday, when EJ arrived back to the nest with a 12" Brown Trout. As usual one of the chicks took it from her, on this occasion it was our male Deshar. Once Deshar had tugged the fish away from EJ he then managed to get the fish stuck to his foot! Ospreys have spicules on their feet, which are small spines that act like velcro, they also have sharp talons that can snap shut when they come into contact with a fish, so it is no suprise really that Deshar couldn't 'un-stick' the fish once he had grabbed hold! In an attempt to release the Trout, he flew with the fish in one talon and tried to land in the camera tree, he then circled before finally dropping the fish whilst attempting to land with it on a stump infront of the centre! He then sat in a tree for a while to catch his breath and recover from his ordeal! So although we have yet to see our chicks with a fish of their own, we had our first sighting of one of them flying with a fish!
The adult Ospreys are still providing the chicks with a supply of fish each day, with EJ still 'out-fishing' OVS quite considerably, if not by number, then definately by size! Since Monday, EJ has brought in a total of 17 fish, with a combined length of 271 inches. Whilst OVS has contributed 10 fish with a combined length of 106 inches!! That just about says it all really!
The next stage that we are waiting for now is for the chicks to start fishing for themselves. Soon the adults will start to bring fewer fish to the nest and we then hope our chicks will associate the feeling of hunger with going to get food, instead of sitting on the nest expecting it to be brought to them! Saying that, yet another bit of excitment in the centre, as Nethy our female chick has just landed on the nest with muddy legs and a wet underside, this is excting news....could she have been fishing already? We all really expected Nethy to attempt to fish first as she is a couple of days older than Deshar, is this all the proof we need? Well, it would be good to see her arrive on the nest with her first catch, then we will definately know for sure! So watch this space!
Anyway, thats about it for this week, thank you to all our visitors, members and bloggers for your continued support.

I also have some very sad news from the Hobby nest,,,,
The second chick has died,, it happend last night as I was watching,,,,
Mum must be a first time mum,, and I think she just didn't know how to look after them,,
She would come to the nest and bring food, then leave again, and expect the chicks to feed themselves,, ofcourse the older of thew two chicks would grab the food and the younger didn't get anything,, so I think it starved to death,,,, sad,,very sad,,,but nature is nature, isn't it,,,,
Hi Red - We are up in the 90's also. I'm staying inside mainly due to the humidity. A breeze is blowing but only enough to make the leaves on the trees move a little.
LYNN The traffic will slow down a little once school starts, but they keep coming down here through October now. I don't have to go on the main highway here to go to school. I just go down a two lane road avout 3 miles and school is on the road. It's GTEAT~ I go in on the 18th and the kids start the 35th of Aug. I'm anxious to get started at the end of every summer break.
Looks like the Panada cam is back on Mei on birthing room. She was eating and eating and all of a sudden she stopped and is laying in the corner very still. The camera panned in and then panned out. Could this be it? Come on girl you can do it.
Hi Eagle Buds, Just got a chance to look in at work. Steve, hope your knees hold up!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROBYN!!!;>))))
Finny nest I saw last night at 22something & was not dark yet. Sibling was standing in nest w/baby but then flew away.Checked later & was so dark, couldn't see anything.Oh well, if they weren't going to take it to rehab, nature took care of situation. Been watching Pandas & one was sitting in pile of bamboo eating. Nothing like lunch in bed!!
The news of the Finny chick being attacked and taken by the sea eagle made the online news...basically they said the eagle attacked the eyase that had not fledged yet, the second attack was fatal.
It is getting late. Maybe if I leave for a second, Mei will do her thing. Helen said it was looking bleak for a birthing if it didn't happen today. Can't wait to hear from her when she gets home tonight. BBL
Wow- just got back from that special hell called walmart where the air is stale and parents yell at their children for no apparent reason except that apparently they are just bad parents and we started to wonder why some of them even bothered to have children because it seemed as though they didn't really like them and had no praise for them only yelling, scolding, and literally screaming. Most of the adults probably have no idea how stuoid they looked and sounded, and we felt sorry for the kids who really didn't appear to be doing anything wrong.. I need some aspirin ....
Megan, most of them really didn't want the child they just wanted the s--. I was in 7/11 this morning getting a cup of tea on my way to work and the young adult was screaming at her boyfriend that they did not have the sluppie flavor she wanted. He brought her to the wrong 7/11. Almost said my god you are acting like a baby. Probably would have gotten smacked in the nose. She was big.
Yes Wanda, Mattie is ready for school, actually she's looking forward to middle school and she's got one more year before middle school starts. :) How has your day been?
Hey - Tee-B and Buddy, so sorry I missed you this morning..sometimes I try to behave and get some things done BEFORE I check the nest, what a dumb idea!
Everything looked all gauzy and beautiful this morning....
Hope everyone's day was good...been busy Panda talk today, sounds like great fun, and ever greater, SUSPENSE !!
OUR nest looks so pretty, even when it's empty. It's Home Sweet Home.
Good Naturalist friend of mine just returned from camping trip to Ontario...he said the loons sung him to sleep and awake...sometimes as many as 20 at a time..Can You Just Imagine! He also saw a lot of Bald Eagles...
Good evening, my friends of fine feathers and fur!
I am in the process of training for a new system we have at work. I am the guinea pig, first one to work on it. Did some test jobs today and it went pretty good with only a few glitches! This time tomorrow I will probably be ready to jump out a window or something.
I see Mei Xiang is eating bamboo. Frodo and Frieda are not around and our nest is so MT! :(
Hi Ceil: Yes, much of what happens is by "accident" or pure luck....fortunately my son-in-law has given me his computer to use and it is a pretty good system, but my skills are from the pre-historic age...
Costume Lady: You take good care of him/her for a bit until we can work out an exchange...sounds wonderful.... Going to grab up the grandson for a sleepover and a day of fun Thurs/Fri - he wants to go to "Martins Mall" for some Ppokemon figures, so I am sure that is on the duty list...he also likes to ride the Pan Tran!
I guess Lake Washington Eagle-watching is over for the season..? The Osprey chicks and Mom look pretty comfy tonight, you can see the third unhatched egg in the nest now.
Wanda, my hubby says I am always doing my favorite things...he must think i am spoiled or something? Of course, that would not be his fault - or would it?
Steve, I hope your knee soon feels much better and that you are not in too much pain!
Sissy, I will keep your M-i-l in my prayers, it is not easy when we need to be the parent to our parents!
I am home from a day of watching ospreys and helping talk with visitors. I listened to Jane enough yesterday, that I know what to tell everyone, plus I can add what I have learned here about raptors. I am having a great time and learning lots. I got smart tonight and mowed before I sat down, plus started a load of laundry.
Evening All. Sharon, YOU don't jump out the window----you throw the 'puter out!!!(unless it's yours)
Margy, you have mail of the celestial variety!
Wanda, for 2 winters, I brought home black swallowtail caterpillars & have a photo record of whole metamorphosis of one.I'll have to put on blog. One fall, the weather was going to get to freezing in our butterfly garden at Park, so we tried to save some. Mine ate enough to change to chrysalis at Thanksgiving & emerged the next April!!!(Kept him in the cooolest part of the basment. Surprise, surprise!
Good evening Momsters and Dadsters. Son isn't home yet so just checked in to see if there was any info on Mei. I see her there sleeping like a baby. Now is says her time isn't over yet, so maybe that sleeping big baby Mei will give us a little baby yet!
PAULA I am using Mozilla Firefox. That is probably why I am not getting live in Conn. It doesn't seem to refresh at all. I'll have to look tomorrow to sww what I can do. My mind was fuzzy this afternoon and useless tonight! :) Thanks for your reply.
DEB Your pics of the osprey release and surrounding area were great. We didn't have any in our nest acrosded the street from my house this year, but there were a lot of them flying above our house. They usually start their migration south from here about the middle of August and it gets very, very quiet around here. We then look forward to seeing them return the end of Feb. or beginning of March. Now if I could just get an eagle down here. :)
No wing blings, Paula. She spray painted orange on the wings of the birds released on Tuesday, tomorrow she is going to use green paint. They are all tagged, green tag is for SD and silver one is government. Jane rescued both downed chicks, there was another one today. Today, though she was alone in a kayak and got the bird in all alone. Tomorrow we will have two small boats to use for rescues, both with electric start motors. The rescued chick today grabbed onto her cell phone and finally let go right over the lake. Now she needs a new phone.
WANDA Glad to see that your grandson is doing much better, and you had him with you for a visit. I am surprised that your cjrysalis kept until April. During April/May, our kindergartens at FF receive orders of Painted Lady caterpillars with green food with them. We get to watch them eat and get much bigger, form into chrysalis' and then emerge as Painted Lady Butterflies. It is part of our science class and we all just love watching them.
HELLO just got home a little while ago.....no news on Mei, still in the luteal phase, and hormones have not reached baseline yet....when they do reach the baseline, they will wait 4 days before they say it was a false pregnancy or hopefully a cub...going to catch up on posts..bbl, to say Goodnight.
Your pictures are great Deb. How lucky you are to be right there with the ospreys, what a neat experience. The Sturgis pics are wonderful too, I love the scenery shots and all the wildlife you saw.
me too, had a close encounter with a racoon....as I was walking down to the parking lot...walked right in front of me after it knocked over a trash can....didn't even say HI
I'll say....Megan I was in a Walmart last week in West OC.....honest to God, I wanted to smack someone, the yelling and screaming, and that was just me, wanting to get out of there as fast as I could...
Yes, sometimes I can hardly keep my mouth shut..but you have to.. it was so bad today, parents were real idiots, daughter and I decided we really had to get out of there...
Only 10 here, but I am heading to bed as soon as I get towels out of the dryer. I hope I have lots of fun news tomorrow!
Paula, I saw lots of bison this trip, some in Badlands, Windcave National Park and some in Custer State Park. Oh and Bear Butte, too. Sometimes you go and are lucky to see a few, this time they were everywhere.
Getting ready to shut down... Wanda,Our black swallowtail caterpillars were on parsley we planted for them. I put some in a flower pot & put everybody in big cardboard box w/net top.Was luckily cool enough in basement that he didn't emerge.Adu8lts like most flowers such as asters & butterfly bush. Candy, bet your painted ladies were great for the kids. One of our naturalists orders the chrysalises for an exhibit & they are in big net cylinder, emerge & eat sugar water. Deb, your pics are all GREAT!!!Have fun w/ospreys!!! Nighty Night
I've got swallowtail caterpillars on my parsley, always have to look closely when I am cutting it. I get them on my fennel, too. I've had spicebush swallowtail caterpillars this year, on my little bushes I grew from seed I got last year at the NCTC open house. They are a wild looking caterpillar with big fake "eyes".
Loretta and Megan....I didn't know about the parsley. We have parsley every year. But have none this year.(wouldn't you know it!!) We needed to reseed it this year and just couldn't get around to it. It was wet for so long that we didn't get a lot done in the garden and have given up for this year.
As of the time we conducted an analysis, we have not collected a sample from today. However, a sample collected last night yielded a progestin value of 31.4 ng/mg Cr., bringing the mean progestin value for yesterday to 32.8 ng/mg Cr.
With progestin values still above baseline values, the luteal phase is not over yet!
August 6 Mei Xiang spent time today cradling one of her boomer balls. This hard plastic ball, which is 12 inches in diameter, was made for zoo animal enrichment. This giant-sized surrogate cub was quite the challenge to cuddle. At times, she managed to cradle the Kong toy and the boomer ball at the same time! Could this be some form of juggling practice for twins!? There have been a few reports of female pandas rearing twins, but this is a rare accomplishment, as each panda cub needs intense maternal care. All this activity took up 41 minutes of her time, starting at 10:53 this morning and continuing on and off into the afternoon. She did not produce any urine today. The wait for Mei’s progestins to reach baseline continues.
the director of the zoo, John Berry, is still optimistic, but he is always optimistic about everything...the panda keeper tonight said the only thing consistent about Mei's behavior is her inconsistency....so "it is what it is":):)
good night john-boy and elizabeth...., I do have an elizabeth (sister) to really say good night too. :) don't let the bed bugs bite, see ya in the morning light.
Yes, Deb, I went eagleless and buffaloless on my first trip back to see the relatives in Iowa-Minnesota (must've been in '84); but on the way back here, I went to Mt. Rushmore and then headed south to Custer State Park.
There I was forced to stop and wait by a great herd of buffalo, which was lazily crossing the road from left to right and heading up the slope a ways to a beautiful, green grazing area above.
Then on my second trip back, I went through Yellowstone on the way, and this time there were herds of buffalo scattered through the park in many places...individuals grazing along the sides of roads in many areas too, so you could get some close-up pictures.
Don't ever try to get too close or annoy these big boys though. They can tear you and your car up pretty well if provoked.

Hello Loretta/ I have been watching Mei. God a little nervour when she stopped eating for a minute and began lucjubg, But she is eating again. :(
The news of the Finny chick being attacked and taken by the sea eagle made the online news...basically they said the eagle attacked the eyase that had not fledged yet, the second attack was fatal.
Freida and Frodo's nest is visible but MT
Oh gosh, how sad for the poor little chick. Hopefully it was fast. Thanks Paula for the info.
OH, Candy, I didn't realize you didn't know...we found out last night, so have had some time to absorb it...
Apparently the chick is suffering no longer
Candy - my CT nest is working just fine...
PAULA Did you have to sign in to get it live? I get a pic, but nothing seems to move live. I double clicked on live cam and still get the same one.
It looks like Mei has settled down again and FandF have an MT nest yet.
It is getting late. Maybe if I leave for a second, Mei will do her thing. Helen said it was looking bleak for a birthing if it didn't happen today. Can't wait to hear from her when she gets home tonight. BBL
Just stopped in to say:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROBYN!!! HAVE A GREAT DAY AND DO ALL YOUR FAVORITE THINGS!!!!!
hello everyone from Mattie and Thelma
Hi, Iris...hope you do all your favorite things too. Are you at home or traveling?
Hi, Mattie and Thelma. Hope your day is going well. Mattie, are you anxious to go back to school?
Mei is trying to rip her toy apart. If cub is born hope she realizes it is alive not her toy.
Hope everyone's day was good...been busy Panda talk today,
sounds like great fun, and ever greater, SUSPENSE !!
OUR nest looks so pretty, even when it's empty. It's Home Sweet Home.
XO
floralgirl: some of those birthday bouquet flowers from 2-1/2weeks ago are still going strong, according to the birthday lady!
No Surprise !
xo
Hey Double E Sharon - You can always teach a "young pup" some new tricks! Sure you did well, it's part of your nature !
Hope it continues to go well.
We got a new teletype (police computer) system today...ugh, have to get retrained, and for this OLD DOG it won't be that easy...
When can I retire ????
xo
Magpie and Sharon know what you mean. Have been on computer since 1982 and still cannot get the hang of it.
Sharon, now you know that you are one of the smartest girls on this blog! You will do fine.
MARGY, I have a Monarch caterpillar in a little plastic box with some Milkweed in it. It is for you, if I can get it to you.
No Candy, my CT cam comes right up. Candy...are you using IE?
Our nest does do look pretty right now...be prettier with an eagle!
Hi Ceil: Yes, much of what happens is by "accident" or pure luck....fortunately my son-in-law has given me his computer to use and it is a pretty good system, but my skills are from the pre-historic age...
Nice to "see you."
xo
My computer is old and the one at work is ancient. As long as they work I am happy.
Costume Lady: You take good care of him/her for a bit until we can work out an exchange...sounds wonderful....
Going to grab up the grandson for a sleepover and a day of fun Thurs/Fri - he wants to go to "Martins Mall" for some Ppokemon figures, so I am sure that is on the duty list...he also likes to ride the Pan Tran!
xo You're so much fun!
Our nest does look pretty right now. It looks like it is encircled in lace.
I guess Lake Washington Eagle-watching is over for the season..?
The Osprey chicks and Mom look pretty comfy tonight, you can see the third unhatched egg in the nest now.
How Cool is that that Steve was blogging today...wonder how the rest of this procedures went...
Thinking of ya' Steve !
testing
Oh, it's working!
Wonder what that was all about??
Blogger closed us down for 30 minutes. I guess they thought our 'puters needed a break.
Time for "So you think you can DANCE?"
I saw that too, Wanda. Glad it missed me...
My sister says you all can't say such things about me. It will make me feel too important! :)
That old Blogger-cop got me...
Love and hugs and prayers to all,
Iris
Mei is a little too comfy tonight. I think we need to go over and walk her around and see if we can get a cub.
There is a new update for 8/6 on Mei's page.
I agree with you Ceil.
Maybe Helen will have some news for us.
I am home from a day of watching ospreys and helping talk with visitors. I listened to Jane enough yesterday, that I know what to tell everyone, plus I can add what I have learned here about raptors. I am having a great time and learning lots. I got smart tonight and mowed before I sat down, plus started a load of laundry.
will post when it lets me!!
good night all-hope to see ya all in the morning light-don't let the bed bugs bite
Deb - nice trip pics!
Did they wing tag the osprey? Who rescued the one from the water...
Nature Loretta:
Wonderful! If you don't see me on the BLOG for awhile, I might be LOST IN SPACE! THANKS !!
Nice adolescent moon tonight...
Everyone start planning your meteor watching spots for early morning August 12 ..wonder if Megan's yard is all filled up with reservations yet...?
xo Tubby Time xo Back after the Bubbles...
They are releasing 7 more tomorrow, so I will have lots of pictures again. I will wait and add today's pictures to those.
Racoons on the PA cam..
Hmmm... and of course now they are gone. No tent space reservations taken yet...
DEB You are sooooo lucky to be able to do this. Will be looking for the new pics after your outing tomorrow. Thanks for sharing them with us.
Well, Josh just came in from work, so I had better let him have his bedroom back. Might want to hit the hay after his shower.
You all have a wonderful night, Ring the church bells if Mei has the cub! :) Mayabe F and F. will be in their house tomorrow in Australia.
Sweet feather and panda dreams to all. Tomorrow brings a new day with a new beginning.
Your pictures are great Deb. How lucky you are to be right there with the ospreys, what a neat experience. The Sturgis pics are wonderful too, I love the scenery shots and all the wildlife you saw.
I am so thrilled to be able to help. I never dreamed I would get to do something like this.
I am glad you all enjoyed the pictures, those elk were huge! And they were so beautiful standing there.
Im not in the Bubbles yet:
DEB: What fantastic adventures and experiences, and I love the cell phone tale !
Now, the hot bath.
Good Night to all those headed for the feather pillows...
xo
Well, Mei Xiang at least looks to be in a good position to birth a baby!
DEB If Jane has or knows a job offer ........
TAKE IT!
Sharon - each time she gets in that corner I think Oh Yeah It's Going
To Happen.......
I will, JO! I keep meeting state people, so that would be great, too.
Loretta, where do you find the Swallowtail (What plant to they lay their eggs on?).
I did offer to walk her around the zoo, but they said...NO!
I bet a walk is just what she is waiting for, can't understand why they didn't take you up on it! lol
I think because they don't want to be picking up my limbs all over the zoo:)
I for one am glad you home safe with all limbs attached!
me too, had a close encounter with a racoon....as I was walking down to the parking lot...walked right in front of me after it knocked over a trash can....didn't even say HI
RUDE RACCOON! Wonder what his hurry was?
Not Funny - but I bet you jumped!
I was so tired, didn't even flinch.
Better a raccoon than a skunk...
I think I will call it a day....
I think that Mei has done just that!
Hopefully Norma will be here tomorrow. Today was her study group.
Good Night Everyone
Peace to You & Yours...
Prayers for everyone's needs being said.
Light a Candle for Mason
Cool, Deb, Thanks for the info. Have fun tomorrow!
Walmart - last week - kids, parents, school stuff, noisy...Thank Goodnes mine's in college...
Thanks, Jo.
Deb - I really liked the Bison :)
Good night, eagle buds! Peace and sweet dreams to all.
NIght, all. Kid is home...
'Night all, too, from one very clean and squeaky Magpie!
Thanks for all the prayers being said for all needs....there are a lot of them out here.....
xo xo xo xo
Only 10 here, but I am heading to bed as soon as I get towels out of the dryer. I hope I have lots of fun news tomorrow!
Paula, I saw lots of bison this trip, some in Badlands, Windcave National Park and some in Custer State Park. Oh and Bear Butte, too. Sometimes you go and are lucky to see a few, this time they were everywhere.
GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE
I have posted photos of some stages that my Monarch has been through so far. They are on my "Wild and Wonderful" blog.
Loretta and Megan....I didn't know about the parsley. We have parsley every year. But have none this year.(wouldn't you know it!!) We needed to reseed it this year and just couldn't get around to it. It was wet for so long that we didn't get a lot done in the garden and have given up for this year.
I didn't go to bed yet...Finney Chick at Finney's nest...brave soul, hope the parents are keeping watch, close watch!
xo
GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE...
SLEEP TIGHT....
PRAYERS FOR ALL
Good nite...
August 6
As of the time we conducted an analysis, we have not collected a sample from today. However, a sample collected last night yielded a progestin value of 31.4 ng/mg Cr., bringing the mean progestin value for yesterday to 32.8 ng/mg Cr.
With progestin values still above baseline values, the luteal phase is not over yet!
August 6
Mei Xiang spent time today cradling one of her boomer balls.
'Night Mits..'Night all..
Where's MOVIN today?
xo
'Night, Mei...
Good Night Liberty, Belle, Pearl, Middy and Tiny...
good night john-boy and elizabeth...., I do have an elizabeth (sister) to really say good night too. :) don't let the bed bugs bite, see ya in the morning light.
thanks Helen for the updates
2 a.m. report - Mei is curled up in a ball in the birthing den. Appears to be sleeping well. Ok, back to bed now.

I scanned the comments but didn't see a mention of the IWS Updates for this week.
