Hello all:) Thanks for bringing over Mason's candle link, Jo. Please send your positive vibes and prayers his way, he needs them. Gotta get to work, have a great day everybody:)
Monday, August 4 The saying goes that no news is good news ... Well, I hope that is true today, because there is no news on Lun Lun today. She continues to eat normally and go on exhibit – no slowing down yet. Her hormone levels do indicate that she is in the pregnancy/pseudopregnancy phase, but she is not showing behavioral signs yet. We are sending urine samples off twice a week now to be analyzed, so hopefully we can predict when a possible birth could happen. However, as we have all said in the past, Lun Lun likes to be different and do things her own way: in 2006, she exceeded the predicted birth window by several days and kept us guessing. So again, we will continue to wait and see ... and of course, we’ll keep you updated. Heather Baker Roberts Keeper I, Carnivore Department ..
Good Afternoon Folks, Just popping in aminute.. Looks like bad storms here in Martinsburg today and even more tonight.. I need to tell you i saw what i thought was 2 eaglets flying quite low in the sky over Winchester Avenue coming into work thsi morning heading towards the direction of Shepherdstown.. Flying side by side what caught my eye was there wing span as i was getting out of my car...Well maybe heading home for a rest in the nest... Glo i saw your have or had bad storms once again in your area.. Hugs to you... BBL off to check cameras..
Oh no as if those poor people didnt have enough devestation.. Mits since the earthquakes do you think now theres a chance that Tai will stay here for a longer peroid of time rather than go back next year???
I suppose so there are more Panda places than just those destroyed in the earthquake.. I wish Mei would make up her mind and drop the baby..lol I thought surely she would have had it by now if she is in fact prego...
I was reading where the pollution is so bad in Beijing that it is the equivalent of smoking 70 cigarettes a day. Athletes are going to have a hard time.
From what I am reading and seeing on the news, I think you are right, Helen. Wonder what they were thinking when they gave them the Olympics. I don't think this pollution is a new problem.
Hey Hey Hey Sharon if i havent lost track of time i think in August will be 2 years since i quit smoking and Jo isnt far behind me.. I thinking about the money im saving and its allowed me to go back to Disney and parks in October with daughter and her sister inlaw Theresa.. But we fly from Baltimore on Oct 17th day before Open House... sighhh
That tremor killed almost 70,000 people and left 18,000 missing and 5 million homeless. There had been 22,019 aftershocks detected since then -- including three in the past four days before the last incidence...6.0 IS A PRETTY BIG AFTERSHOCK
Heard on car radio this AM, that new quake is in the same province as before--Szechaun, I believe. Hope people had not settled in yet & weren't most of the panda's moved?
Hello Everyone... I am sitting at a bar in Berryville. Just thought I would check in and let you know where I am so Margy wouldn't come looking for me. Have a nice day.
OK Gang, when should we start calling the Finnish Embassy for translater &/or contacts on osprey nest? Another whole day, & no naturalist visit. Perhaps their policy is to not interfere----would be nice to know. :>(
NatureNut - last year we tried and tried to translate and communicate with the Finish nest when one of the chicks died. We really didn't have much luck. Now at least they have the Nest News in English. Last evening Paula got a quick response from a friend - so that may be our contact to find out what is going on. Don't be upset but it is possible that the adult parent will NOT feed the youngest bird that is injured... :(
I think it is almost midnight at the nest - I cannot see if the youngest chick is in there. Will need to wait until rather late this evening when the sunrise occurs over there.
CONGRATUALATIONS to Nilla, Jo, Red, Sissy, and Jim for quitting!!! I too quit 25 years ago last March, so I know it is not an easy thing to do...takes determination for sure!!! I'm really proud of you all!(and even proud of me too actually) Of course...there is still the weight problem yet to conquer!!!
Hi gang! Suffering w/ a pulled shoulder, so very uncomfortable at keyboard, but needed to check in and see "wha's up". I quit 3 yrs. 2 mos. ago., the day before chemo started!!! Congrats to all the rest! HAve to say that it was probably the hardest thing I ever did, considering the stress of the situation. But Wellbutrin really helped. Wanda, dear, you didn't have to run away to Berryville to have a drink!!!! Some of us nearby would have joined you at a local bar! Feeling so sorry for the poor juvie in Finland...but that's nature....survival of the fittest, as they say. At least we know that Buddy was named appropriately for his gender! Mei....you are driving us crazy! Mits, hope you are having a safe trip home. Deb, your pics were great. Sure glad you didn't go the bike rally in St. Louis asrea...it was nudies!!! Will check back later...gotta get back on the heating pad.
Jo, Thx for info. Suzanne wrote me about the one chick that died last year & it got removed from nest when they came to band(ring).I figured since they had already done that this year, it's not impossible for them to get to this nest.Perhaps their policy is to let nature take it's course. If the cam was not there, we wouldn't know what happened. I may stop watching it if nothing is done to help----too painful to see that poor baby.
Hey, I quit smoking 35 years ago. I drank coffee to get me through the tough times and exercised. NOW, if I could just conquer this DRINKING problem, zzo epi;f jsbr oy ,sfr/ wpif dp,rp,r vp,r smf hry ,rzzzz/z? Margy, I need a designated driver, would you come and get me?
I hope someone out there knows what's going on...there are two young birds and the adult...gonna have to read their blogs and see if I can find out ..feel like I am going crazy....!!!! I didn't even see the chicks for awhile, just thought Mom had showed up for a rest. Man I feel stupid.....don't have to take that IQ test to feel this way...
Not so good news at Hobby Nest, one of the two chicks seems to have died sometime today, still checking for a confirmation on that. Chrissy had commented in an email that she thought this was happening...
I am home from watching the release of 5 osprey chicks today from the hacking tower at Lake Yankton. It was an awesome day, I thought I was only going to be there for awhile, but it turned into an all day event. Three of the osprey fledged today, the other two were still on the tower when I left. Seven more will be released on Thursday, then more on Friday or Saturday.
Blog says Delta is a replay of earlier days...sorry I didn't figure that out...was so excited to see the Adult there....way before I saw the chicks...sorry about all that....
Good news out your way, Deb, at least there is healthy life at the Hacking Tower...
I posted this morning early or maybe emailed Chrissy, that the weather looked bad at Hobby Nest, Mom was on the babies tenting them..something went awry sometime after that...
I get to be a volunteer and help the next 3 weeks with spotting on the birds. I kept looking at the lady in charge, thinking that I knew her from somewhere. Well, the osprey are all from IDAHO! A light bulb went off, she is the lady that has Beauty.
Confirmed, one hobby chick remains. Sounds like it was a really tough day on those watching things develop, maybe not enough food...or other factors...
Beauty is good, they are planning on the next step in October. She says they know they are bad at updates. After talking with her today, I can understand why she doesn't have time.
Deb - that's really cool about the osprey being released from the hack tower. I meant to say something yesterday. And you met the lady who has beauty...how cool is that....Did you get some pics?
Yes, Paula, I have pictures that I am downloading now. You know what is even stranger?? The eaglets that were rescued that you e-mailed me about are at her place in Idaho!
I am at home now. I was sitting at a bar, but wasn't having anything to drink! Karla (Butterfly Mama) is the Lounge Manager and secretary of the Moose Lodge. We took Dustin there to go home with his mom. Afterward, Gene and I went shopping and had dinner at the Red Panda in Winchester. We rode home on Route 11 and I enjoyed that so much. Green lawns and brightly colored flowers in all the yards. I think people are staying home due to the price of gas, and tending their lawns and flowers and it shows. Or maybe it is the surplus of rain we have had.
Deb, I'm glad you have more photos coming. I loved your slideshow, but it didn't last long enough. You had everything on there that I love: animals, birds, flowers and waterfalls. MORE!
She wanted to know where they came from, so I got out the map and showed her. She is trying to decide where to release them, here or Idaho. If she does it in Idaho, she can release them near her place and it is also near an adult pair that is successful with raising eaglets. She asked our opinion. I told her it would be nice to bring them back, but that she should do what is best for the chicks.
Can someone send me the pic that Sharon sent along of the Eagle this morning? I saw it with my own eyes but would like to see it again... please and thanks....
I am waiting for Deb to return from mowing....... She is really making connections! How about that gal! Working the Hacking Towers with Beauty's owner!
Wanda, I just looked at Finland nest too. He/she gone----just feathers left behind. Knew it was a sitting duck for a predator---probably owl. Well it's out of it's misery, but I'm not out of mine. Can I meet you for a drink, Wanda??? ;>((((
August 5 Mei Xiang slept in the den last night. Our volunteers observed 11 minutes of moving bamboo, nest building, and then eating the bamboo, beginning at 7:31 p.m. About half an hour later, Mei spent five minutes cradling the Kong toy, and toward the end of the hour, she had a three-minute episode of paw licking. Near midnight, she cradled her Kong toy for 31 minutes, and for 18 of those minutes she was also licking the Kong, her abdomen, and possibly her nipples. This was the most extensive behavior observed all night.
This morning, Mei came out to the training cage when called and participated calmly in the ultrasound procedure. Mei declined to hold her arm still for a blood sample, withdrawing it from the sleeve, and patiently waiting for her treats anyway, while remaining seated in the training cage. It is typical for her to be touchy about some of her training when she is “pregnant” however she was so relaxed, we decided to give it a try. Mei, in her quiet way, let us know it was not part of her plan.
Mei produced a nice fresh urine sample at 7:55 a.m. before calling it a day—on the rocks in exhibit three. She may have urinated again while defecating at 10:17 a.m. From the top of the rocks, it was difficult to confirm, as it all dropped into a pile of bamboo. She remained asleep in the enclosure and did not shift for the rest of the day. As I write this at 3:55 p.m., she is still asleep.
One urine sample collected at about eight this morning had a progestin value of about 34 ng/mg Cr. The progestin value today is still above baseline, and considering her behaviors, there is still hope that Mei Xiang’s reproductive cycle may end with a cub.
Margy, thanks for your concern. I don't think you will ever have to come and get me at a bar. You are such a sweetheart to offer. LORETTA, come to our open house Oct. 18, and we can all have a drink together.
OKAY PAULA, YAHOO IS REALLY SLOW AND SO IS MY OTHER EMAIL PROGRAM, THIS IS THE ONLY THING THAT IS QUICK TONIGHT..THANKS IN ADVANCE...AND THEN I'LL THANK YOU AGAIN WHEN I GET IT. * * * * * * * * * * * * * ISS WAS SPECTACULAR TONIGHT, FOLKS. BRIGHTER THAN JUPITER, STRAIGHT ACROSS FROM WEST TO EAST, ABOUT 2/3 OF THE WAY THROUGH IT FADED INTO RED AND DISAPPEARED. STILL LOOKED A LITTLE "DUI" TO ME.
Mei is laying down now but keeps moving her back paw up and down. She is restless. What was so nice about the NZ cam is that once they brought it back up after Tai was born it was on 24/7. Never had any problems.
Jo, that would have been a trip!Aliens from Andrews??? Been watching Mei, too. If she did have cub while ago it would have shot right into that cement wall like Tai butterstick!
GOOD!!!!!!Maybe people are going to stay in town....beach has been very crowded, people aren't worried about paying gas....all the SUV's, and big pickup trucks and vans...most from PA, NY, and NJ......
COUNTDOWN TO THE PERSEIDS: The annual Perseid meteor shower peaks one week from today, on Tuesday, August 12th. The best time to look is during the dark hours before dawn on Tuesday morning when forecasters expect 50 to 100 meteors per hour. Get away from city lights if you can; plan a camping trip! The darker the sky, the more meteors you will se
Hoping that Lolly and family are safe. Perhaps they did come home early due to the storm. Vacations aren't any fun with RAIN WIND and POWER OUTAGES! Especially with small children......
Oh wonderful, Megan, on the Perseids...they are good ones...and there will be no big moon to compete with....I will have to be clocking in at 0800 Tues morning but what the heck! I'll take a huge panda nap beforehand and find a place to camp out...you might have to do the same if you have market Tuesday...thanks for the info on the peak time!
I am signing off for the day.... I've been watching for Deb to come back on - bet she is going through all those wonderful pics!
Good Night Everyone Peace to you & yours Pleasant dreams and restful sleep Prayers being said for all our needs.. especially for Mason's recovery... ((hugs))
Thanks, Mema, cause the one at the Water nest does not have the white edges and we know those are adults.. I know you might be on the pillows already but thanks anyway... xo
I am feeling so sorry for Lolly. She and her family were going to Padre Island and had to scrap that trip because of hurricane "Dolly", and planned to go to Galveston as a second choice. Now Eduard is probably sending them home early. Hope they had a nice time before the winds and rain came. As Jo said, she'll have a lot to tell us when she gets home.
I am off, too. I got through all 267 pictures to see what to keep, etc. I got it down pretty good, but now I am tired. I will finish and post tomorrow night. Off to osprey watch tomorrow.
Yeah, NN, a Great Horned Owl would be a very likely 'finisher.'
Great links to Buddy, Paula.
He almost sounds like a songbird. And I was wondering why he turned his head the way he did ... I think it is probably from looking through the slats in the cage while 'talking' back and forth to the other eagles nearby.
I changed my mind and finished the pictures tonight. They are on my page, I need to find out the number of the female that fledged. I think A2, but can't remember for sure.
T-bird: You are not alone...but I only just jumped on for the last ten seconds of the view! Running a little late this am...but I am so glad it was a looooooooonnnng view for you !
been having IE problems since hubby set my computer up last night, told him I would do it......now cannot get on to my Comcast homepage, and have a long walk around the block to get to my e-mails, and my outlook express is not sending e-mails......#$%$#, but hey, LIFE IS GOOD:)

we still have some time, Nilla, but not much more time.

Mema - back to you, lady...
Can someone send me the pic that Sharon sent along of the Eagle this morning? I saw it with my own eyes but would like to see it again...
please and thanks....
Skies are clearing for ISS...
I agree Jo. Buddy is a cutie. You can see how crooked his beak is in those pictures.
It is daylight at Finny's nest and I see nothing but white down feathers.
I am waiting for Deb to return from mowing....... She is really making connections! How about that gal!
Working the Hacking Towers with
Beauty's owner!
Wanda
I dedicate this #100
to you as you deserve
a facial
Hi Ceil! Do you think that your
sister made it safely home yet?
Wanda, I just looked at Finland nest too. He/she gone----just feathers left behind. Knew it was a sitting duck for a predator---probably owl.
Well it's out of it's misery, but I'm not out of mine. Can I meet you for a drink, Wanda??? ;>((((
Paula, the Buddy pics & videos are priceless--I've been emailing them.
It is daylight at Finny's nest and I see nothing but white down feathers. Same Here Wanda...
No new nest notes either.
Paula - do your thing and email
BOB for an update if possible.
COSTUME LADY: Sounds like a wonderful night for you and the Captain....
I had the coffee pot going just in case I was headed to Berryville...!
God Bless all our Feathered Friends, wherever they may be.....

August 5
Mei Xiang slept in the den last night.
As I write this at 3:55 p.m., she is still asleep.
got home around 6:30 p.m., saw about 6 osprey on my way home, hubby and I went out to dinner, he is traveling for next 2 days, and I'm off to the zoo.
August 5
One urine sample collected at about eight this morning had a progestin value of about 34 ng/mg Cr. The progestin value today is still above baseline, and considering her behaviors, there is still hope that Mei Xiang’s reproductive cycle may end with a cub.
STILL OPTIMISTIC
Margy, thanks for your concern. I don't think you will ever have to come and get me at a bar. You are such a sweetheart to offer.
LORETTA, come to our open house Oct. 18, and we can all have a drink together.
WOW! Mits - still hope!
Maybe tomorrow when you're there!!!
Now wouldn't that just be awesome...
Margy, you have mail! :):)
BE STILL MY HEART:)
OKAY PAULA, YAHOO IS REALLY SLOW AND SO IS MY OTHER EMAIL PROGRAM, THIS IS THE ONLY THING THAT IS QUICK TONIGHT..THANKS IN ADVANCE...AND THEN I'LL THANK YOU AGAIN WHEN I GET IT.
* * * * * * * * * * * * *
ISS WAS SPECTACULAR TONIGHT, FOLKS. BRIGHTER THAN JUPITER, STRAIGHT ACROSS FROM WEST TO EAST, ABOUT 2/3 OF THE WAY THROUGH IT FADED INTO RED AND DISAPPEARED. STILL LOOKED A LITTLE "DUI" TO ME.
XO
I
Mei is off the bed - down in the
corner ....
Where did Mei give birth to Tai...
Her birthing den?
Mei is digging around in the birthing den
WANDA: ANYTHING FOR YOU, LADY!
Now I have my coffee in my anyway...got to clean up the mess I made looking for photographs...
Grrrrrrrrrr !
We all have each other to carry us through these nest sadnesses...
Feather Spirits....
xo
in the exact spot she is in now, she gave birth to Tai
I guess Mei was just getting in a comfortable position.... darn...
she looks uncomfortable
Couldn't see ISS---very cloudy. But I did see a nice white light----helicopter LOL
NN- I am glad they didn't beam down on you and scoop you upward!!!
LOL If Mei births that cub or cubs - They are going to shoot right
out!
Tai actually hit the wall when she shot him out....BOOM!!!!!
PRetty sun on Finny's nest
Bob saw the MT Finny nest too, and that's all.
Mei is laying down now but keeps moving her back paw up and down. She is restless. What was so nice about the NZ cam is that once they brought it back up after Tai was born it was on 24/7. Never had any problems.
she is almost on her head....I really did like that they brought the cam back as soon as possible.....WITH SOUND!!!
I am in from mowing, only made it half way before I lost the light.
my nerves are shot....hoping tonight is the night, but I know in my heart..."it is what it is", and God will do His Will!
Going to watch her for awhile and then go to bed. Have a good night everyone. Prayer for those in need.
No ISS Wednesday but back out again Thursday..I'll post the time and directionals Thursday morning..
That Panda looks like a big balloon !
xo
Jo, that would have been a trip!Aliens from Andrews???
Been watching Mei, too. If she did have cub while ago it would have shot right into that cement wall like Tai butterstick!
Is Hopkins on Wed nights?
Deb - I kinda thought it was late to mow!
Mits - that is funny about Tai hitting the wall!
Hopkins is Thursday night, this will be the last one, Paula
Think Hopkins is on THUR.
Gonna watch some TV--Good Good Night to those leaving us.
she looks like a shrimp, laying like that
They have Mei on both cams - just different angles.
tee-hee, she still reminds me of a curled up shrimp
Did Wanda ever come back from the bar??
Thanks Mits and Nature...guess that's why I have missed some...just waiting for my reminder! :)
yeah, she made it back, Megan, how was DC?
Better than last week..
GOOD!!!!!!Maybe people are going to stay in town....beach has been very crowded, people aren't worried about paying gas....all the SUV's, and big pickup trucks and vans...most from PA, NY, and NJ......
Mei is back up on the platform bed...never mind just came back down to the floor
I am tired...and am going to bed...Good luck sweet Mei, if you happen to deliver...GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE
Can we all camp out in your garden?
Sure!!
Do you rent tents?
That would be so awesome to see!
UH, BYOT!!
Tent party at Megan's!
Night all!
No Problem!
Glad market went ok today.. hope it keeps up that way until it's time to stop going down. Corn maze time coming soon for you!
Night Paula.......
Yep, already booked a school field trip last week..
Megan, a quick question...do you plant your Tansys in sun or shade?
Hoping that Lolly and family are safe. Perhaps they did come home early due to the storm. Vacations
aren't any fun with RAIN WIND and
POWER OUTAGES! Especially with small children......
Tansy is growing in full sun. Off to catch some zzzz'S...
Wanda - what is "Tansys"
Tansy is a perennial herb- can be very invasive- grows 4-5 feet tall, has clusters of small button like yellow flowers in the summer. nite
Bird on the nest at Finney's - parent or chick? can't tell..
It is a chick, I think. Someone once said that the chicks' feathers have the scalloped white ends on them.
I am signing off for the day....
I've been watching for Deb to come back on - bet she is going through all those wonderful pics!
Good Night Everyone
Peace to you & yours
Pleasant dreams and restful sleep
Prayers being said for all our needs.. especially for Mason's recovery... ((hugs))
and one on the nest at Over the Water Finland nest as well...
and a Ferry Boat just went from left to right...
Thanks, Mema, cause the one at the Water nest does not have the white edges and we know those are adults..
I know you might be on the pillows already but thanks anyway...
xo
You're welcome!
Good Night, and God Bless Us, Every One.
OK, MEGAN, now I know why my Tansys aren't doing well. I have them in shade. I will water them well and move them to a sunny spot tomorrow. Thanks
GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE
SLEEP TIGHT
PRAYERS FOR WELLNESS & HEALING
GOOD NIGHT, EVERYBODY.
Keep warm, keep well, keep moving....
Jim
You might know it, but I don't see a comment on the Finnish eyass.
I just opened the site, and it appears some bird ... perhaps the original White-tailed Eagle ... has killed and fed on the injured chick.
There are white feathers strewn around the nest and not much else of the chick still visible.
Merciful in the long run, since the little guy didn't have a chance anymore.
Did anyone see it??
Jim
Jim, It happened in the dark. I doubt if sea eagle could see good then. My guess is an owl.
I am off, too. I got through all 267 pictures to see what to keep, etc. I got it down pretty good, but now I am tired. I will finish and post tomorrow night. Off to osprey watch tomorrow.
I was looking for news statement too before I shut down 'puter.
Oh well, such is nature. :>(
Good Night
Yeah, NN, a Great Horned Owl would be a very likely 'finisher.'
Great links to Buddy, Paula.
He almost sounds like a songbird. And I was wondering why he turned his head the way he did ... I think it is probably from looking through the slats in the cage while 'talking' back and forth to the other eagles nearby.
Jim
I changed my mind and finished the pictures tonight. They are on my page, I need to find out the number of the female that fledged. I think A2, but can't remember for sure.
Night again.
