GOOD AFTERNOON, FOLKS.

I had some puter problems, AOL this time I think, and had to shut it all down. Then I had to do a lot of tinkering with the adjustments. Hope it worked. I lost a large, beautiful email I was writing at the time, which does not make me happy.

But how are things in the world of our eagles today?

BTW, Norma mentioned Jimmy Durante.I remember when he would sign off his TV show, he would say,"and goodnight Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are." If anyone else remembers that, they're either a trivia buff, or a senile citizen like me!!!

I remember Inka dinka doo, don't think I remember the goodnight thing though.

Who had the wife, Gracie? He would say, "Say goodnight, Gracie." And then she would say, "Goodnight, Gracie."

I never could have done it. Thank you all for everything you have done for me and my soldiers. I miss you all so much and think nonstop about returning home

Good evening everyone. Justin and I arrived in Bedford a short time ago.

ceil said...

Deb did you get up to the tower today

Mema Jo said...

We had just boxed up some items to ship to him in Iraq - goodies plus hubby copies movies on CD's to send to him. Now we are working on the box for SGT Patrick! If anyone wants addresses to send cards just email me. It really means a lot to the troops to receive mail & boxes. Ryan also makes sure that items are shared with the men under him that don't receive any word from stateside.

wvgal_dana said...

Deb your pictures are AWESOME !!! ( : thank you so much for sharing them

HI JUSTIN

I bet Buddy was glad to see you!

Eagle-Eyed Sharon said...

Actually, gas was $3.45 cents in Wytheville but at the intersection of 220 and I81, it was $3.43. In between, in Salem, VA, it was 3.77.

Mema Jo said...

DEB - What a variety of pictures.
Trying to catch the fish is excellent
Had to enlarge the one pic to see what it was you were staying away from - YUCK! Spider sure is nasty looking!

Hope you answer Ceil's question about getting up into the tower and I hope you were able to hold an osprey

floralgirl said...

Hey Jo, can you email me those addresses?
Naturenut, nice pics! That blue flower is a salvia-looks like salvia guaranitica- I love the hummingbird pics!

floralgirl said...

I just finally finished looking at Deb's pics- they are wonderful also. Love the osprey pics, that spider gave me the creeps though..ew...

deb said...

Yes, I got to go up in the tower and it was amazing. I am working on the pictures now. I only had trouble one time and that was when I realized the tower swayed when anyone moved. Not a pleasant feeling. I was glad to get my feet on the ground. I will tell all about my trip up in a bit, I need a pop.

ceil said...

Just got to see your pictures Deb. Beautiful. Night Dana.

ceil said...

Good for you Deb.

deb said...

Congrats to Ryan, how great for him.

Glad to see Norma was on today, even though I don't get to stick around, I miss reading her greetings.

Dana, have missed reading about you, also.

Megan, that spider was huge, not quite as big as a tarantula, but grossed me out. The college students thought it was great.

deb said...

I have my drink of Diet Coke and am ready to tell you about the tower. I will finish the pictures tonight, then you can see. Hope it isn't too long, but know a lot of you will find it fascinating like I did.

deb said...

We had 4 birds to prep for release today. Toto and Moreau, the two back from the Raptor Center in St Paul, then Sneezy and Sioux (I got to name her). Toto was easy, we just painter the wings pink so we could find her easier. Next was Moreau, who was named after the river where the eaglet chicks were rescued from drowning. Their nest was about to be destroyed by the Missouri River, which rose 12' this year. That was good for the river, but bad for the nest. The eaglets are in Idaho at Jane's ranch. Moreau just had to have a tail receiver put on so we could track short distances, it will fall off eventually. Then we painted her wings.

MITS said...

sounds great Deb:)

Mema Jo said...

Loretta - Your turn for the compliments! Loved all your photos.
Need a close up of the county bluebird statue!~ The marsh walk is really pretty with lots of things to see. You keep a very pretty park!!!

deb said...

The next two both had tail feathers that had been broken and had to be replaced. They use their tail for flying and when they are just learning to fly, it is important to send them out in the world with everything going for them.

The Raptor Center sent down 8 feathers for tails and quite a few for wings. We didn't have any broken wing feathers, but we ended up having to improvise on into a tail. This is not the preferred thing to do, but not using it would have left a space in the tail. Jane found a wing feather that fit quite well and put it in a non-strategic place.

These birds didn't get receivers as they wanted the tail feathers to stay in place without any interference. I got to hold Sneezy, the last bird we prepped. I say we, but I was just the photographer.

Mema Jo said...

I don't blame you for not liking swaying towers - especially if you're up in it! Deb, was Moreau an osprey or an eaglet?

Mema Jo said...

Where is Jane's home base, Deb.

ceil said...

So glad you got to hold one. Lucky you.

deb said...

I will tell you briefly how they attach the tail feathers. The feather shaft is hollow, as you know, so they use wood dowels that they carve down to the correct size to fit in the shaft. The dowel is then glued in the shaft. The feathers were all prepped on the ground, so that when they inserted them into the bird's shaft, they only had to size one end of the dowel to fit. It was very interesting to watch. Last step was to get the feathers all back in place and the tail looked good as new.

MITS said...

unbelievable, Deb

deb said...

Moreau was an osprey, he was named after the river that comes into the Missouri River where the eaglets were rescued from. Did I confuse you more?

Bottom line, Moreau is an osprey.

Jane is in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

deb said...

Loretta, love the pictures. You have so many different plants than we do, the bald cypress tree is so neat. What are the green, roundish things on the tree?

Mema Jo said...

I got it Moreau is an osprey

It is just unbelievable (like Mits said) about this experience you are having. I am so very happy for you!

Thx, Megan about blue flower. I had no idea it was salvia! Naturalist who does the garden was out of town.
Speaking of 'puter problems, for awhile now, everytime I am adding pictures to Blogger and trying to do text,AOL pops on all by itself! Pain in the &*^%T!!!I keep minimizing it & it keeps popping!
I just went into Default programs & changed it to IE since we have to get on to AOL w/it anyway. Have to see if that works.

hedgie said...

Yeah, Howdy Doody, Ranger Hal, Miss Francis and Ding Dong School...the list goes on!!!

magpie said...

LYNN - So far, so good, have not gotten called in.
Sounds bad, the wreck you just described...have heard a of sirens off and on...I DO NOT like that kind of activity - and never cared for it when I ran ambulance calls either....I was never a TRAUMA JUNKIE...

Yep, Pick Temple, too!
Well, Margy, got to admit that trauma was not my favorite thing in nursing, but saw plenty of it in ER; we were very fortunate at GM not to have had many serious injuries...can probably count on 2 hands the number of "serious" in 28yrs.

magpie said...

Gosh, I am still hearing sirens.

Deb, your pictures are FABULOUS!!!!I love the fishing sequence. I don't know how you got pics w/out having to make a video! Early in the spring I watched an adult female dive 3 times to get a fish. How great these juvies are doing it already.
The round balls on the cypress leaves are the fruit--dark, rounded cones. Altho in Pine family, they shed their leaves/needles in the fall. This is about as far north as they will grow.
The Park areas I've posted pics of are just near our office. The whole Park is 2000 acres (the less space for bldgs!!!!)We have 11 other small properties open to the public---no offices.Mostly hiking, fishing & canoe/kayak launch areas.
Jo, congrats to Ryan & prayers for all over there and for Mason.

I will have to finish today's pictures later, they are all technical type, showing a lot of what I described. I am getting a headache, I think too much sun and I am tired, too. No Olympics tonight for me, I am off to bed.

Night everyone, glad you are enjoying my adventures along with me.

magpie said...

Your spot sounds like a great place for a Field Trip, Loretta...is it open to the public?
What a great place to work !

Mema Jo said...

I had to google that one........

Sam and Friends was Jim Henson's first television show, a five-minute show that aired twice daily on WRC-TV, the NBC affiliate in Washington, D.C. The show ran from May 9, 1955 to December 15, 1961.

I never saw it..... lol

hedgie said...

Margy, I've always been a law enforcement junkie, and with firefighter/paramedic S-I-L's have become EMS junkie, too. After nursing, I started what was then called Police Science degree program...got married and moved here and didn't finish that one! Went to Calvin Bayer to apply for a deputy opening, and the a-hole laughed at me and said "we don't hire women." Such were the old days!

magpie said...

Okay - that would explain the Kermit character...Thanks JO -

I remember one sweet little sequence they would do: "Inch Worm, Inch Worm..."

NatureNut said...

Sorry to hear of traffic accidents up there. Do you have to go to work, Margy?
I remember you mentioned Ironweed & now it's out. I missed a couple Turk's head lilies--out earlier if they survived & we should be having Turtlehead. Last year's drought did a number on plants--esp. at my house!
BTW, I didn't mention Pick Temple 'cuz he was local, but Lynn is from DC, right? "All Giant Rangers will grow big & strong." Giant food was his sponsor.

Mema Jo said...

My thoughts exactly Margie

Let's pick out a day when you are not working & Loretta can be our guide - Eagle express might even be available for a tank of gas!

Is the park in St Mary's County
Like 100 miles from up here?

P.S. Fried Apple-cinnamon oatmeal is good. I microwaved a packet with less milk than usual, so it was fairly solid. Then I browned it well in very little margarine. Probably could add jam or apple sauce...if you had some. Try it.

I think you could also go the other way with it: use the unflavored stuff, add salt, pepper, onions, etc.

Last week I added a packet of unflavored oatmeal to a half batch of pancakes, and it was good too, although it's flavor is kind of "pale" ... so far.

Don't know how long it will last, but I'm up early this morning.

T-Bird, I think our juvenile eaglets have all flown from the nest area and into their future.

Nobody has seen them in more than a week, but the adults have begun making visits to restore the nest, which they don't do while the young are still using the nest, AND they are never followed by hungry eaglets.

Apparently, the personnel at the training center haven't seen them around either.

Don't know if they might return, since it's still early in the season, but they are gone exploring now.

getting his dark feathers now, and it won't be long before it fledges,,,,

Weather here dull but fine,, we are waiting on more rain and storms for the weekend,, and have as always got the sandbags to hand,,,

My Sparrow-Hawks are doing just beautifully,,,,,

Daddy is looking after his daughter, who I have named "Poppy", they visit my garden every day,,,

Don't see much of mum and son now,, I think she has taken him off to train elsewhere,,,, but they all come back to their tree every night and sing for me,, just wonderful,,,,

Well thats all the news I can think of for now,,,,

Still in paroxysms of grief over Mei notgoing to produce a cub this year, ah well there's always next year,,, and we have Lun Lun who will hopefully give us a baby soon,,,

love and hugs

Mei keeps squatting on the sidewalk and then dancing at the fence, wanting back in!

Chrissy - are you on the still cam? We have not had live cam for several days now....

Just saw that Hobby get a meal...and parent is at the nest again..

One of the Loch Garten chicks was just on the nest too, and now nest empty, camera panning to the tree it is perched on.

Good Over the Pond morning to ya' and I'd have some of that Raspberry Pavlova if you could get it to me...I'd even do some of your ironing for it!

Hope all will go well for Frank, glad they haven't found anything yet...I guess that's a good sign...?

I guess I'm the only one who remembers when there was NO TV. Entertainment was Radio. Jack Benny, Sky King, Our Miss Brooks and The Lone Ranger.
