Blogger ate my last comment. It is too long to reprint. Said hi to Donna. Said it wasn't any of us who said stupid that Maggie picked up. Heard from Suzanne. That's the quick version of it. Eyes to the sky to steal part of Suzanne's quote.
How I do love that pink kitty. Dear ones, I have a wonderful nature story to tell about my son's stray cat who adopted him. She is somewhat feral, hence, we have not been able to get her contained to take to vet. She has been at my son's for about 9 months now, only coming to eat her food when all go undercover or inside. Of course, she ended up pregnant. She had 3 kittens in an old hollow apple tree. She climbed 14 feet up the tree into the hollow opening, and down four more feet inside the tree to make her nest. The kittens were so inaccessible we could not reach them. We suspect they had been there over a month, when an early Sunday morning storm broke off another branch of the apple tree creating another "entrance" to the nest exactly at the point nest where the kittens could be seen peeking out. Pepper and the three kittens have made remarkable progress the last two weeks and will now allow Travis to touch her, not pick her up, mind you, but just touch her. The kittens still hiss some, but aren't scratching and clawing when picked up. The next item is immunizations for Pepper and spaying. If you are interested in the pictures of the tree and the nest, email me and I will get them to you. Too many to put on blog, and not all of us are cat mamas. Interesting pics, though. blessings donna

Good Morning - Steve's words make my heart jump! I know it's coming but it seems like a short season. Well, if Pearl goes this weekend then maybe we'll see Middy go next weekend when we're there!
It is so up lifting to read this blog! Norma you paid us back well with your comment to Mits! lol I am copying my comment in case that STUPID blogger cop is around!
WHOA!!!!----HEY HELEN!!-----I don't have 'BILS'?----Does anyone else have 'BILS'?-----That is a mystery to me!!----Did you try to MOVE your lawn?---Is when you found BILS?
Hi Gang. Just looked at Stork News and top post finally mentions the loss of the 2 chicks. Don't have time to read any info. If you click on one statement, learned there is usually a paragraph w/more facts. Guard those lawns!!!!! LOL
Have you all seen the Osprey cam on the BioDiversity site? It isn't a very good picture today. I don't know if it is like that all the time, I just opened it today.
There is a bird in the BC nest bothering the eaglet. A pesky black one.
The ATLANTA BEAUTY---known as MEI--was hanging over the end of her outside log bed----sleeping!!---One black arm & one black leg hanging over the side!!!---Enjoyed the chases she had with LUN LUN!! She is a little IMP too!!!
You know, once they fledge, we get a whole new set of worries - waiting for them all to be back in the nest at the same time! So many memories coming back.
DEB---Thanks!--I had the site--but had not seen this OSPREY part!! Have all your weather warnings been taken down???----I HOPE SO!!---SEEMS we are seeing one or more a day some where!!!
I think it is good in one way that BC eaglet does have someone pesking him some. That way he can learn to mantle his food. Chase things away. Since he has no siblings. Just fishcrow don't go pecking on eaglet :(
Yes, Norma, all watches lifted, the only damage was in Centerville, SD, just north of me. Trees, power lines down and some broken windows. Six confirmed tornadoes, but they were all in fields, none in towns.
WHO wouldn't love a little black & white PANDA that lies on his back while trying to eat BAMBOO!!---Only the 'LITTLE PRINCE' can pull that trick off!!!-----'ADORABLE LITTLE IMP'!!!!----(not so little anymore)
Yes, Norma, we have tornadoes here. Five years ago we had Tornado Tuesday--60 in one day, lots of damage. Ten years ago today, Spencer, SD, was demolished, 6 people didn't survive. Last year Yankton had a bad tornado, no deaths, luckily. If it had been one week later, the campground would have been full and it would have been a different story. Vermillion has been hit twice in the last 5 years. Lots of tree damage, a few houses, nothing too bad.
Just in case you all didn't know, there is to be a Live Chat about Buddy today:
At 1:00 p.m. today, log on to WVEC.com for a live Web chat with Ed Clark, Director of the Wildlife Center of Virginia. You can ask questions about the treatment and future of the eaglet removed from Norfolk Botanical Garden.
yes, Deb....couple of years ago, one came on the beach, and got the trash cans and some lifeguard chairs.....fortunately, the lifeguards had cleared the beach, and no one was hurt....it was about 10 blocks south of my place
Didn't know that HELEN!!----I saw one at OC many moons ago when the kids were small!!----Scared them!! Then when telling their friends--they thought it was COOL!!---ho!
wvec-moderator: Welcome to the live chat session with Ed Clark, Director of the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro. wvec-moderator: We will be beginning shortly. Feel free to begin submitting your questions. wvec-moderator: Ed will be answering your questions about the health of the eaglet from Norfolk Botanical Garden, and about the work done at the Wildlife Center of Virginia. wvec-moderator: Ed, you can introduce yourself whenever you are ready. I will start sending you questions shortly. Ed Clark: Hello everyone, I am Ed Clark, President and Co-founder of the Wildlife Center of Virginia. On behalf of our entire team, we are overwhelmed and humbled by the outpouring of interest being shown for this young eagle. I will do my best to answer all of your questions, candidly and honestly, but please don't pay too close attention to my spelling!
Ed Clark: One more thing I should state from the outset is that I am NOT a veterinarian, but will be citing information provided to me by my colleagues who are. Our veterinary team is acknowledged to be among the best in the world, so if I sound smart, they probably deserve credit!
Tina: 1st. Is the severity of this young eaglets reaction to avian pox due to it's age & the rapidness of growth, or is this a new strain of avian pox? Ed Clark: The biopsy performed by SCWDS was able to confirm AP however, the exact strain was not typed out as this takes much longer to do and traditionally has no bearing on the treatment plan. That said, in our collective experience, we have never seen pox take on this form IN THIS LOCATION. AP often has lesions that resemble the mass on this eaglet however, they almost always come from the featherless regions of the body
Tina: 2bd. What about the parents? Is there a possibility they have this and we have not seen it in them, or can they be carriers? Ed Clark: There is no evidence the parents are suffering from the disease, though their immune systems may just be fending it off. The virus, like many, is in the environment, and seems to become active when the immune system is weak.....or in this case underdeveloped
Is the eaglet still eaying well and keeping his strength up for treatment? yes, the bird ate well at its recent feeding and we have started it on pain medication because the growth is still getting larger. We think the bird is comfortable.
If avian pox is a self limiting virus how long before it normally runs its course, and how long would you expect this growth to continue ? Ed Clark: The duration of clinical signs depends on the species affected, strain of pox virus, and immunological status of the infected bird. Some birds have recovered in as early as 2-3 weeks whereas in others, the lesions continue to spread until it blinds the birds and they can no longer see to find food. The incubation period (time from first entry into the bird until the onset of clinical signs) varies
I'd read of artificial nest for it, and only pictures have been in a box with towels...is there a pseudonest for it somewhere? and is it near the adult eagles so it can hear them?
Ed Clark: the "nest" is a padded kennel that has been equipped with "pillow" to allow the bird to be in a normal position. Now that we know the bird has a highly infectious disease, it is isolated---however, it would be alone in the wild as well. It has a window through which to see out.
Ed Clark: It is not really "rare", but neither is it common. We have seen cases regularly over the years, but never anything as severe and aggressive as this.
BLR: How do you think the eaglet contracted avian pox? The parents appear to be symptom free.
Ed Clark: Well, not having the sniffles does not mean that you might not have a cold virus in your body. Normally our (human) bodies fight off viruses in the environment to which we are exposed daily. The immune system of a young bird was simply not up to fighting it off
Ed Clark: The baby continues to grow, but there has been a distressing increase in the misalignment of the beak. The baby was reluctant to eat, but after the first bite he was back to his little piggy self
Ed Clark: Our baby has racked up about $2500 in services so far, not counting the lab test confirming the virus or the MRI....and it has only been a week.
blue_velvet22000: Do you now know the gender of our baby?
Ed Clark: I am saying "he" because his size for his age falls within the averages for male chicks. Females are larger. However, the virus may have slowed growth. For treatment purposes, it does not matter
mary: can we visit the wildlife center sometime in the future and maybe see the eaglet?? Message sent to moderator(s) Ed Clark: Yes and no..... Ed Clark: We have open houses for visitors....
Ed Clark: but patients are STRICTLY off limits....especially those with infectious diseases Ed Clark: it is for the sake and stress level of the animals
kathy: If it had been left in the nest with its parents, would they have likely been also affected by the disease?
Ed Clark: We do not even allow staff into some cages.... Ed Clark: It is impossible to say if the parent would have contracted the disease for sure, but it is certainly a very real possiblity, to say nothing of other eagles in the area. It would not have survived long with this growth, however.
Tina: Hello Mr. Clark...thank you for your time today. My question is...Is the severity of this eaglets reaction to avian pox due to his age or is this a new strain of avian pox?
Ed Clark: We have no reason to suspect a new strain. We think it was "the perfect storm" of location of infection, age (and therefore the low level of immunity) and really rotten luck.
wonering: Since the diagnosis is avian pox, what is the danger that it will spread to other eagles in the Hampton Roads (Tidewater) area?
Ed Clark: The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Center for Conservation Biology are currently in discussions with the Mosquito Control Program in the Tidewater area to see if monitoring for this virus is possible. Again, we know the virus is out there, but most birds are healthy enough to fight it off

Blogger cop taught Maggie to say stuped, I'm sure. Not Mits, Not Ceil, Not Mary Margaret (for sure) Not Suzanne. Must have been blogger cop. Sic im Mits.

Quiet at nest now, but, they were just moving the lawn a little while ago.....:)

MORNIN' PAULA!!---What do you think will be discussed today at the 1:30 chat?----More info about the 'little eaglet'!!
Bless you, eaglet!
DANA---Hope you will go & give us an update!!---Truly appreciated it last time!!!
Good Morning - Steve's words make my heart jump! I know it's coming but it seems like a short season. Well, if Pearl goes this weekend then maybe we'll see Middy go next weekend when we're there!
It is so up lifting to read this blog! Norma you paid us back well with your comment to Mits! lol
I am copying my comment in case that
STUPID blogger cop is around!

LOL
BBL
Have you all seen the Osprey cam on the BioDiversity site? It isn't a very good picture today. I don't know if it is like that all the time, I just opened it today.
There is a bird in the BC nest bothering the eaglet. A pesky black one.
The ATLANTA BEAUTY---known as MEI--was hanging over the end of her outside log bed----sleeping!!---One black arm & one black leg hanging over the side!!!---Enjoyed the chases she had with LUN LUN!! She is a little IMP too!!!
Yep Deb mentioned that above about fishcrow picking on BC eaglet again today.
DEB---I couldn't find an OSPREY on that site!!----Where are you watching?
Norma don't know if I will be at the NBG chat today. I have company coming here sometime today. Arrival time is when they get here.
Here is the Osprey site:
Osprey nest
Craig Hooper's Southport Island OspreyCam
Norma I feel sure that they do seed the PA woods right in front of the cam. Saw a deer at a salt lick the other day.
Wild Watch - 2 burrowing owls are out
Blue Bird on her eggs Osprey on her eggs
Lucy Loon on her 2 prize eggs...
UP Up BUT Not away Yet, Please!!!
PRETTY SITE, DEB...NORMA, that is my Internet abbreviation of BILLS:)
I will have the chat open. It starts at 1:00 this afternoon.
Good Morning Jo ( : You made it in before noon hour lol
You know, once they fledge, we get a whole new set of worries - waiting for them all to be back in the nest at the same time! So many memories coming back.
WELL, I hope they stay put for awhile.....look a little shaky
TRUCE---PLEASE!!!!!!!!
Something is bothering our babies!
they seemed quiet when I just looked...
Just fishcrow don't go pecking on eaglet :(
Sounds like smaller birds chirping, so one of them may have gotten a little too close for their comfort!
well, hoping weather that they predict for tomorrow, does not come, stupid reception is outdoors........:(
ALL THREE IN NEST!!!
hmmm, could be lunch if it gets to close
HELEN---KEEP positive thoughts!!
Dana, did you see that bird attack little BC?? It got him/her right in the back.
"it is what it is", Norma:)
Yes, Norma, all watches lifted, the only damage was in Centerville, SD, just north of me. Trees, power lines down and some broken windows. Six confirmed tornadoes, but they were all in fields, none in towns.
I don't see a "live" only refresh eagle cam a Libby Dam. Is that not live?
SAFE JOURNEY HOME SUZANNE---SENDING LOVE PATS TO ALL YOUR FURRY FRIENDS!!!-----WE MISS YOU!!
(just in case she can peek in)
no Dana, use the link below it for a 20 second refresh
Read the messages at the NORFOLK site!!!-----Doesn't look a bit good for the "little trooper"!!!
So sad!!
SUZANNE HAS LEFT THE BUILDING....EYES TO THE SKY, ETC
I'm leaving the bldg also with
Eyes to the Sky
DEB---Do you remember ever having had a tornado in your area---We are supposed to be protected by our mts.----
WHO wouldn't love a little black & white PANDA that lies on his back while trying to eat BAMBOO!!---Only the 'LITTLE PRINCE' can pull that trick off!!!-----'ADORABLE LITTLE IMP'!!!!----(not so little anymore)
HE IS 181 LBS NOW
FEEDING CHICK at SCOTLAND NEST!!---Still only ONE CHICK & he/she is growing very--very fast!!----Cute!
Doesn't have to compete for food!!
HELEN---Isn't that hard to believe???---I still see him as a 'LITTLE' panda!!---
I know, Norma, hard to believe he will be 3 in July....he has lost his cub-looking features....
At 1:00 p.m. today, log on to WVEC.com for a live Web chat with Ed
Clark, Director of the Wildlife Center of Virginia. You can ask questions
about the treatment and future of the eaglet removed from Norfolk
Botanical Garden.
They say the same thing about the mountains protecting CO, but they have had tornadoes in Denver and in Colorado Springs.
we have had water spots over the ocean.....
Here is the link for the bandings at the CHIL nests. Lots of pictures and videos.
CHIL Banding
Do those water spouts come on land ever?
yes, Deb....couple of years ago, one came on the beach, and got the trash cans and some lifeguard chairs.....fortunately, the lifeguards had cleared the beach, and no one was hurt....it was about 10 blocks south of my place
THANKS DEB!!----This gal doesn't feel safe anymore!!----You certainly burst my bubble!! ho!
WANDA---If you read the comments at the NORFOLK site!!----Doesn't sound as if there will be much of a future for the little one!!
I haven't ever seen one, but have heard about them.
Didn't know that HELEN!!----I saw one at OC many moons ago when the kids were small!!----Scared them!!
Then when telling their friends--they thought it was COOL!!---ho!
Colorado is a lot closer to tornado country than you are, Norma. You are probably okay where you are.
WANDA---I have some errands---but would like to know what they say!!
Hope it's good!!
Do we want to post the chat comments on here today? It is about to start.
wvec-moderator: Welcome to the live chat session with Ed Clark, Director of the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro.
wvec-moderator: We will be beginning shortly.
THANKS DR. DEB!!----needed that!
Norma answered my question.
Nothing happening yet, chat room is filling up.
Ed Clark: One more thing I should state from the outset is that I am NOT a veterinarian, but will be citing information provided to me by my colleagues who are. Our veterinary team is acknowledged to be among the best in the world, so if I sound smart, they probably deserve credit!
Ed is trying to figure out the chat process.
The virus, like many, is in the environment, and seems to become active when the immune system is weak.....or in this case underdeveloped
hey ED, I sent a question....lol.
Ed Clark: When we know he is no longer contagious, he may be moved to an enclosure with surrogate parent
Is avian pox rare or unusual?
Ed Clark: It is not really "rare", but neither is it common. We have seen cases regularly over the years, but never anything as severe and aggressive as this.
BLR: How do you think the eaglet contracted avian pox? The parents appear to be symptom free.
Ed Clark: Well, not having the sniffles does not mean that you might not have a cold virus in your body. Normally our (human) bodies fight off viruses in the environment to which we are exposed daily. The immune system of a young bird was simply not up to fighting it off
mary: how is the baby doing today?
Ed Clark: The baby continues to grow, but there has been a distressing increase in the misalignment of the beak. The baby was reluctant to eat, but after the first bite he was back to his little piggy self
Where did you submit your question?
rory new york: where can we donate for our patient?
Ed Clark: GREAT QUESTION!!! go to the Wildlife Center website: www.wildlifecenter.org You can make secure online contributions
I thought I did it correctly, asked then hit submit button...
Message sent to moderator(s)
Ed Clark: Yes and no.....
Ed Clark: We have open houses for visitors....
ok- that is the right way.
Ed Clark: but patients are STRICTLY off limits....especially those with infectious diseases
Ed Clark: it is for the sake and stress level of the animals
kathy: If it had been left in the nest with its parents, would they have likely been also affected by the disease?
I submitted a question, too.
wonering: Since the diagnosis is avian pox, what is the danger that it will spread to other eagles in the Hampton Roads (Tidewater) area?
Ed Clark: The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Center for Conservation Biology are currently in discussions with the Mosquito Control Program in the Tidewater area to see if monitoring for this virus is possible. Again, we know the virus is out there, but most birds are healthy enough to fight it off
ok, talk to you all on Sunday...have a ncie weekend..
