One possibility for the growth is Avian Pox. However, there is also some rason to doubt this diagnosis and the primary purpose of the exam is to evaluate the growth and to determine a possible cause.
Currently you can see an adult on the same tree as the cam. You can see a lot of staff and some visitors waiting outside the exclusion area. There will be no discussion. Only them telling us what is happening. So I will be writing it as they put it ok.
Chesapeake Bay Region bald eagle concentration areas, particularly those in Virginia, are probably the most important bald eagle habitat east of the Mississippi River. The tidal rivers of Virginia and Maryland are extensively used by southern and northern migrant eagles for foraging, roosting, and molting.
Good Morning I made sure our nest was doing well & see the adult with our kids. I am now over to NBG to see what is happening. I have not read any of your posts so I hope everyone here is also doing well.
Bald eagles will continue to be protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. But future growth of their populations, both in Virginia and across the country, may be constrained by the loss of protection of potential nest sites and suitable bald eagle habitat as a result of Federal de-listing.
Well, it seems to me - they removed the Bald Eagle from the endangered species list and now all hell is breaking loose everywhere. Probably not changed from past years but everything has a camera on it now and we can see what is happening.
Because of its rich food resources, Chesapeake Bay also is host to a large influx of summer migrants from Florida and other Gulf Coast states from May to September.
Also attending today is Stephen Living, Wildlife Biologist, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and Reese Lukei of William & Mary’s Center for Conservation Biology.

While we wait.....Jo, every thing is fine with my eye. Doctor said it is doing exceptionally well. I panicked yesterday! For some reason I could see exceptionally well the day after surgery. What I am seeing now (a blur) is normal.I do not see him until July when I get new glasses.
This was put on earlier Jo ... where the money comes from:
Norfolk Botanical: Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) is responsible for the management of inland fisheries, wildlife, and recreational boating for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The agency is responsible for the management in of Bald Eagles in Virginia. Norfolk Botanical: Through the partnership VDGIF has provided the camera equipment and lighting equipment and additional logistical support. Norfolk Botanical: NBG provides protection for the eagles and has provided the transmission equipment for the webcam. Garden staff also maintains the feed to WVEC for the cam.
Norfolk Botanical: The growth seems large and agressive and is starting to interfere with his breathing on his left nostril Norfolk Botanical: It may interfere with eating soon
Norfolk Botanical: He will be taken for care in Wildlife Center of VA at Lyndhurst (near Waynesboro) Norfolk Botanical: He is being put in a transport box now
I hope they can help the little chap,, But poor mummy and daddy,, I feel for them from the bottom of my heart,,I hope they get to see him again very soon,I'll say a little prayer for him and hope it helps,,
Norfolk Botanical: VDGIF biologist will address the media about the situation. Norfolk Botanical: Biologist is Stephen Living Norfolk Botanical: He will also post more details in his blog at the VDGIF site
From me: I will not be watching the nest for awhile when this reporting is over.
Norfolk Botanical: the baby will not likely be returned to the nest - recovery will probably take too long but release will most likely be in the area. Norfolk Botanical: Biopsy was taken from the tip of the mass.
Norfolk Botanical: Parents may show some stress but these birds have proved resilient and should return to normal in a few days. Will continue to hunting in the area Norfolk Botanical: These were comments made by Dr. Sleemand and Stephen Living

Chrissy, they got face to camera with that salmon too!
Ah Man! Just went back to your
comments Dana - So sad!!
This has been one heck of an eagle season from one end of the country to the other!!!
Norfolk Botanical: The growth seems large and agressive and is starting to interfere with his breathing on his left nostril
Norfolk Botanical: It may interfere with eating soon
Oh!!!! I feel terrible! I was getting my hopes up that he would be returned to the nest. :(
Norfolk Botanical: He will be taken for care in Wildlife Center of VA at Lyndhurst (near Waynesboro)
Norfolk Botanical: He is being put in a transport box now
With Beauty recently receiving an artificial replacement for the beak - maybe that was a prelude to helping this little guy with a new beak!
Norfolk Botanical: They have taken tissue samples and will send to make a correct diagnosis
Norfolk Botanical: Blood samples were taken as well
OH DANA ,,,
Thats not good is it pet,,
I hope they can help the little chap,,
But poor mummy and daddy,, I feel for them from the bottom of my heart,,I hope they get to see him again very soon,I'll say a little prayer for him and hope it helps,,
love and hugs

How sad is that!
MT NEST
Norfolk Botanical: The parents continue to soar high, but over towards the lake at the moment
I am going to leave for a while. Going to ride my mower before it gets too hot!
Do NOT want to watch the adult eagles come back and call for their baby. That would truly break my heart!! I am a softy!!!
BBL
Norfolk Botanical: Thank you for coming to the Garden today and we will continue to monitor activities this morning.
Norfolk Botanical: They are leaving with teh eagle now
Norfolk Botanical: The eaglet will travel with Dr. Sleeman - it is being loaded into his vehicle
What are the terrible big bangs at our nest??
Norfolk Botanical: VDGIF biologist will address the media about the situation.
Norfolk Botanical: Biologist is Stephen Living
Norfolk Botanical: He will also post more details in his blog at the VDGIF site
From me: I will not be watching the nest for awhile when this reporting is over.
Norfolk Botanical: According the vet - the mass is growing rapidly and needs an operation
Norfolk Botanical: It is not sure that this is Avian Pox - the mass has grown faster than thought
Somebody just hollered!!
Norfolk Botanical: Ideal treatment would include removal of mass and complete recovery and release to the wild
Norfolk Botanical: the baby will not likely be returned to the nest - recovery will probably take too long but release will most likely be in the area.
Norfolk Botanical: Biopsy was taken from the tip of the mass.
From me: I am just wondering when "buddy" is well and released. If they will have a transmitter on him. To follow his where abouts and health.
well good news and bad news, good it is being helped, but bad, it has to be away form the nest....life goes on:)
Norfolk Botanical: Parents may show some stress but these birds have proved resilient and should return to normal in a few days. Will continue to hunting in the area
Norfolk Botanical: These were comments made by Dr. Sleemand and Stephen Living
Norfolk Botanical: The mandible was starting to become deformed due to mass and needed care
