Good morning, Steve! Will go speak politely to the crew to come on over! Thanks for the new thread!

Mema Jo said...

Hello Lolly - I found you accidentally!
I have been checking out the Zoo cams.
So hot for the Sleuth Bear outside but I see him/her climbing around. I was looking at the Flamingo's nest that Mits alerted us about on the old thread.

I hope you hollered at them! lol

Lolly said...

Good morning, Jo! I did not holler! I spoke politely and then lingered to catch up on the old blog. Man, we had some night owls on the blog last night.

Mema Jo said...

Yes, I don't expect to see Shirley until around the noon hour - unless George gets after her to be fed.

Hope Annie is ok for you today.

Mits said...

yes, Jo they don't have the best view of all flamingos who have mud mounds, but remember how much fun it is to watch them:)

Mits said...

Happy Birthday again to Sophia:), can't believe our Maggie will be four in August too.

Judie said...

Good morning, everyone. Thank you Steve for the new thread and Lolly for the call over.

Happy 4th Birthday, Sophia.

Mits, thanks for the flamingo cam.

Thank you, Paula for the LOL pictures.

Lynn, sorry you are paddling in the "can't get the live cam" canoe with me this morning. Hope you have better luck.

Been out to check patio plants and put out two containers of red sugar water for hummers. Put one in the center of the birdbath and one on the table near the fuchsia -- weighted down with a rock. Will see if they stay put or tipped over by critters.

LOL looks nice this morning. Isla standing watch with two flattened chicks.

Diego is quietly surveying his domain.

Hope -- report good. Been to the food station.

Phoenix looking bigger and bigger.

MT TH nest.

Off to do some chores inside. Way too hot outside now.

Lolly said...

Annie has been driving me crazy! Never had a cat that meows so much and it seems to be worse now. I finally got her to be quiet last night...I startled her and made her run off. She just wanted to go out so bad! Then she woke me too early wanting to go out. I let her out and went back to bed.

stronghunter said...

Good morning,

Another hot day here.

Lolly said...

I am finishing up my second mug of coffee and then I am out of here. Going shopping today. Need to buy a wedding present. Also going to Fort Worth. Going to the TCU bookstore. LOL I need a new TCU decal for my new wheels. Do not know if any of you follow the College baseball world series, but TCU is still in there! First football and now baseball. Go Frogs!

hedgie said...

Judie, I get flustered about cams that don't open, too. I'm sure that the flamingo cam uses the same media type as the panda cam, but why one works and another doesn't makes absolutely no sense to me!

Lolly said...

Hey, Jo. There is another July birthday. LOL Jack turns 70 (OMG!) July 17th. He is ticked, only half ticked, we have a wedding to go to on his birthday.

Lolly said...

I married a MUCH older man. ☺

Lolly said...

Oh, he would be after me if he could read my comments!

Lolly said...

Shirley, what are you doing up after being up much of the night?

Mits said...

Lynn, I think Ceil has problems getting the panda cam sometimes.

stronghunter said...

Lolly, I have a cat, too. He does not allow me to sleep in but just so much. He has no pity.

stronghunter said...

I finally fell asleep, but not right away after I went upstairs again. It was another hour or so.

Mits said...

95° already...yuck:(

Mits said...

here is a nice cool thought.....6 months from today will be Christmas Eve...:)

Mema Jo said...

I sometimes go to the bottom of the panda cam page and click on the flamingo for their cam. Mits, I am assuming there are more mounds then what we are seeing on the cam.

Lolly said...

Need cool thoughts, but not sure I am ready for Christmas. LOL

Yes, cats have a way. Annie does not allow us to go to sleep and she wakes us up. If I find her asleep during the day, which is all the time, I do the same to her, I rub her belly and ask her if she is trying to sleep. At night when we go to bed, she is right at our face meowing and wanting to be petted. She finds our hands, if we are not petting her, and somehow rubs under them. She forces us to pet her!

Judie said...

Well, I certainly do not understand why I can open live cams around the world but not NCTC. Just infuriating. Well, maybe next year will be better.

Only six months to wait to find out if we will have another frequent flyer shiny garland -- yippee.

Lolly, your comments are safe with us.

It has been three years and I still miss by Lily and Koko. They were very good alarm clocks AND very good feet warmers in winter.

Lolly said...

Prepared her meds, she saw me, and is now behind the sofa. Grrrr!

Lolly said...

Time to get moving! Have a great day everyone and try to stay cool.

June 23

It is very quiet around the panda house these days. The summer heat has descended and our pandas have settled into their pattern of longer naps and much shorter bouts of feeding. Gone are the hours of stripping the culm, or stalks, of bamboo. Now Mei Xiang and Tian Tian are selectively consuming the leaves, if only for a few minutes, before returning to their naps.

The increase in temperatures is tolerated by pandas by using the micro climates in their enclosures. These include the air-conditioned and radiant water-chilled grottos, the shade under trees, and the pools. The foggers also help to provide a brief cooler experience for the animals and people along the trails. However, when the temperatures so cruelly soar over 90, only the air-conditioned indoor areas bring comfort to pandas and people. This is a great time to see the giant pandas up close, indoors. Currently the panda entrance off the lower trail is closed, so visitors may only enter through the exit, nearest the Olmsted Walk side of the building.

This is also the time of year when we give our pandas the opportunity to socialize. Introductions will begin over the next week, on hopefully much cooler early mornings. The direct interaction provides both mental stimulation and physical fitness, as play translates into exercise.

hedgie said...

Can't believe the stupidity of some people-----in Jefferson Co. (county where our nest is) someone has left a 5 yr. old and a black lab in a car in a parking lot for a prolonged period of time. Windows open.......but still too hot and who the H would leave a 5 y.o. alone???? Police on scene---he put them in his car w/ AC while others pursue "responsible"--more like irresponsible criminal-- party and animal control is on the way.

stronghunter said...

Really sad, Lynn.

stronghunter said...

Thanks for the panda information, Mits. Don't think I would want to brave the temperatures and go to the zoo today, but it is interesting to read about what is going on there. I am sure the heat is hard on many of the animals, not to mention the people, at the zoo.

hedgie said...

Judging by size, I just saw fledgling downy woodpecker and chickadee. Too much leaf cover to get pics, tho'.

hedgie said...

Mits, those foggers would feel really good to animals and people, I'm sure!!! Any stoopid questions yesterday??? What kind of attendance do you get on days this hot?

Mits said...

that just makes me so angry, Lynn, do these people live in a cave....any person with 2 brain cells to rub together....must know this...grrrrr

hedgie said...

Lolly, Cinnamon does the same thing as Annie......forces a pet by nudging her head under my hand. I was on the sofa yesterday trying to write some info and she wouldn't hear of it!!

Mits said...

zoo was crowded, police were riding around making announcements to keep hydrated....I was the only trail volunteer yesterday afternoon, so that means, I stay at the panda yards....volunteer did not show up for 1 to 4 cam duty...so I manned the cams from 1 til 7, and did interpretation from 1 til 6 from the panda cam room, it had a fan and I was inside so it was all good:)

Judie said...

Thank you, Mits. I didn't know anything about how Panda bears are kept reasonably comfortable.

Sure hope the irresponsible person is prosecuted for leaving a child and dog unattended and in such awful heat. Would love to see CPS and Humane Society step in.

Hi Shirley.

Heading for the kitchen.

Just found this on our school mail (from earlier in the spring):

IF YOU HAVE YOUR A CLASS TODAY PLEASE SEND ME THE STUDENTS WHO ARE ABSENT FROM CLASS

Well, you might send the names of the students, but if they are absent . . .

Mits said...

sounds like one for Jay Leno's Headlines, Shirley;)

Judie said...

Shirley, are you sure you don't work at GW?

stronghunter said...

We already made Jay Leno--at least the school district--for the Anne Frank issue.

Also, I hear we made it because of a wordsearch on the school menu that featured alcoholic beverages and such. I have no idea how that happened, but I thought someone might steal the copy of the menu on the bulletin board. (Wordsearch was on the back.) I suppose someone just grabbed the wordsearch and did not bother to look at it.

Did You Know......helicopters have been banned from Machu Pichu and a 125 sq. mile surround due to the threat to local wildlife. The spectacled bear, Andean Cocks-of-the-rock (click here), Guanacos (info here), and Vicunas (click here).

paula eagleholic said...

Judie, are you trying to watch in IE or FF?

wvgal_dana said...

Hay Mits that's very neat. Sorry you had to be there over but I know if you did't want to do it you would not have.

Funny I was stuck over in the old thread. Every time I refreshed it just came back to my comment and none after mine.

Finally after doing some thing around the house. I tried it again same thing happened. I said to myself no way. They would be commenting. So I brought the entire page up again and there was a new thread. Read the rest of old and you know the rest since I'm here.

Hi there ex-Marine although once a Marine ALWAYS A MARINE.

Glad your California beaches and water is ok out there.

Our Florida beaches are getting hit on the Gulf Coast side with the tar. Will be more problems with where they sprayed and you can't see tar floating ontop of water. It broke in down and sinking further into ocean. This is going to be a problem with fish...no oxygen down so far which makes them come up to the lower levels. This is going to cause problems with fish that live deeper because they won't be getting the foot they need.

Well that's my feeling anyhow. Someone might say this wasn't about eagles. Oh YES it is because Eagle eat fish. What is in the spray????? They won't let anyone have a sample to see what is in it. Maybe even cause problems later with people, kids that have gone in water because they look clean.

Ok -- I'm off the subject for now.

Going out

Looking at the Channel Islands,

They have the PH cam zoomed out, and you can see both chicks branching.

Both WE eaglets are blowing zzzzzzzzzz's in the morning fog.

And there's a note on the TH nest that both fledged on the 23 rd.

Oh the package for Daughter is suppose to be sent back to Martinsburg today. I called where I snet it from. Spoke to them (if that is what you want to call my mad attitude). Her PACKAGE will be delivered to her tomorrow.

Can you believe they where waiting on her to get in touch with them from them sending her a postcard.
Problem being they didn't and couln't send a postcard because he didn't put the building number on it....so she got NO CARD.

Anyhow problem settled --at least if she does get the package tomorrow.

Dana, I agree with you regarding the oil sinking and the impact it will have on fish and, ultimately, critters that survive eating fish. Also, so glad you daughter will finally receive the package. Memories will be just as sweet.

Hi Jim.

Happy about the helicopter ban.

Paula, I cannot get the live cam with either IE or FF. Can get the still cam. Just not quite the same as watching when everyone is describing Palmer's antics and hissy fits.

Maybe some lunch now.

Bad storm headed for Norma!!

Weather radio has already screamed at me this morning--severe thunderstorm watch.

They don't have squirrels on Santa Cruz...looked like an Island Fox! Who knew they could climb trees!?

PammySue said...

Hello all.

Lolly, my dog used to hide from me when it was time to give her medicine. I would speak so sweetly to her to come out, but she knew what I was up to. LOL

Hedgie, do you know where this person left their child and dog in the car? They need to lose custody of both.

stronghunter said...

Haven't been able to find the YouTube squirrel or fox attack at PH.

paula eagleholic said...

Post from Harpo about the Island Fox.

on the island fox website:

The island fox protects itself like any member of the dog family.

It can run away. An island fox can run fairly fast, even leaping as it sprints. (watch M67 run as he is released into the wild) Because of its small size, an island fox can run under and through dense chaparral and grasses.
Its coloration also helps the island fox hide, this is called cryptic coloration or camouflage.

It can climb, either up steep rocks or even up into trees to escape.
It can bark to scare away a threat.

It can bite. It has sharp teeth and can bite like any small dog.

Plus, someone on the forum actually saw one in a tree out on Santa Cruz.

paula eagleholic said...

Hang on, Shirley, I'll post it

paula eagleholic said...

Here's the video of the Island fox...

NatureNut said...

Afternoon Everyone. Been off 'puter for awhile. Tooth is not happy since I got them cleaned a week ago! Started taking pain killers which send you to naptime!(I cut them in half, tho) Got an appt. this afternoon, so I guess it's goodbye to "Mr. Wiggley"!They've been after me to get it out for 2 years, but it was OK til now. And that's enough about that!
Been checking Isla--she seems to be doing OK--a Miracle Bird.
Just saw weather & severe Tstorm warnings for Allegheny Co., MD, Hampshire Co., WV, & Winchester til 3PM & more in other areas for later.

stronghunter said...

Thanks, Paula. That was interesting. I also figured out what the "patio" is at that nest.

Good thing for the fox that the parents did not show up.

PammySue said...

Thanks for the video, Paula. It was pretty crazy to see that tiny little fox up there.
(Even though I don't really know where 'there' is. What does PH stand for?)

stronghunter said...

Just figured that one out, Pam. It is Pelican Harbor.

magpie said...

Good Afternoon Eagle Pals...

Hi Margy.

Good to see you again.

stronghunter said...

Late night has caught up with me.

magpie said...

Well, Palmer is on the nest...postpone your nap ☺

magpie said...

first I only noticed that a turtle shell was, sort of not there...
then realize Palmer was there on it!

magpie said...

turns out if I had remembered about CAM 2 at Loch of the Lowe's - -

lots of wing flapping

Hi Pam

PammySue said...

I think she is hungry. She keeps poking around in the nest.

paula eagleholic said...

Thanks, Margy!!

My feed was frozen, I refreshed and there she is!

Judie said...

Hi Lowreeda. Sorry about the tooth but know you'll feel better after.

Thank you, Paula. Never heard of an Island Fox. Sure did get a surprise.

Hi Pam and Margy.

paula eagleholic said...

I think she flipped that shell upside down.

paula eagleholic said...

She's so pretty!

PammySue said...

Wow. You can really see how big she is!

PammySue said...

Hi Judie.

Sorry about Lowreeda's dental problems. I am terrified of dentists, as many people are.

paula eagleholic said...

Looks like naptime for Palmer...laying down in the nest now.

PammySue said...

She's probably patiently waiting for dinner (for now). Give her a while and she will probably start raising a ruckus.

Mema Jo said...

Just coming back in and our darling Palmer is in the nest. I don't like not having sound - it always alerted me to her being there.

magpie said...

She sure is a beauty, couldn't agree with you more Puala...just like her namesake ♥

thought she was going to leave there for a minute or two

she's going to have us do a Where's Waldo on those turtle shells

Loretta...sorry also about the tooth....hope it's over and done with quickly

can't blog much and watch live feed...so did I just miss and adult presence?
Great entertainment with her poses here

Hi Judie also and others before..

paula eagleholic said...

Now she's up and searching for nestovers.

paula eagleholic said...

Why does spell check tell me nestovers isn't a valid word? :)

paula eagleholic said...

Tossing turtle shells around now.

Where's Waldo's turtle shell now? :)

Mema Jo said...

Paula, I couldn't believe my eyes about that Island Fox! How in the world did he climb up there. He sure didn't waste any time getting down!

Son is here and he couldn't believe it either......

magpie said...

I thought I had seen a flash of white aka adult bird for a few seconds on the still cam, about 10 mins ago...
never saw it on the live feed

between 12 and 1 on the nest but it was over so fast, might have been seeing things

Mema Jo said...

Nestovers always gets the 'red line' when I type it! So does wingercisers !

Palmer may be in the nest due to realizes we are under storm conditions.

Judie said...

Because spell check isn't a momster or dadster.

magpie said...

whew I have only live feed, blog and still cam up,
took almost a full minute to internet option clear out the history and add-on data
Sigh

nightowling has taken its toll here got to snag a quick nap

ttfn xoxo

Hope this dangerous weather in many areas...will not present any serious problems...

PammySue said...

Good point, Judie.

magpie said...

LOL Judie....!

PammySue said...

I left for a second. Did I miss something? It looks like she is eating something.

paula eagleholic said...

Looks like she is eating too, I didn't see a food drop, but Margy thought she saw something on the still cam.

Mema Jo said...

Do you all have sound on the live cam now like I think I do........ ??

Mema Jo said...

Forget it I think it is my loon cam.

magpie said...

was just finishing up an email or two...so I'm back...
I should have tried to catch a pic...
Palmer showed little to no interest if there was an adult...I can't say I saw any food...
just looked like the adult was picking at nestovers

and Palmer didn't rush the spot the adult was in...so I really can't say if there was an adult there or not...
that's not much help is it?
:(
okay now the nap

hedgie said...

Just as I predicted: storm missed us completely!!

hedgie said...

LOL----just realized that I watched video without reading text on the PH nest intruder----it was a FOX, not a squirrel!!

Mema Jo said...

The storm didn't make it over the mountain

hedgie said...

Pam----kid and dog i n car were at a shopping center in CharlesTown, but didn't catch exactly where.

hedgie said...

Loretta, hope they yank that bad tooth out quickly and easily. I'm suffering for you----and Norma would be, too, if she knew!! We hate dentists BIG TIME. Worst thing for Norma is that with her new young one, she's learned that her old old one had been mis-treating her teeth for years.

hedgie said...

Still no sound here, Jo!
Palmer looks like she has apoplexy!!

paula eagleholic said...

Palmer plotzed in the middle of the nest....wings spread slightly

hedgie said...

Isla is keeping good watch high up on the tree......surveying her kingdom in all the wind! Looking stronger every day.

hedgie said...

WOW----a red panda cub was born at National Zoo last week!!! Did I miss hearing this from you, Mits??

How WONDERFUL to see Palmer in the nest this evening!

Judie said...

Oh wow! A red panda at NZ. Such an adorable animal and the pictures are just fantastic. Thanks, Lynn.

Hope Palmer gets some dinner or a snack. Looks like twilight at LOL.

Almost time to head to the kitchen. Pork chops with orange sauce, buttered spinach, tomato/mozzarella/basil salad.

hedgie said...

Dinner sounds yummy, Judie---except the spinach!
Hi, Lori! When do you sleep, gal??? Yeah, always nice to see our our bird back home!

Lori O. said...

Actually just getting ready to hop off to bed, but wanted to see if Palmer was "home" tonight because I didn't get to see her this morning.

stronghunter said...

Hi,

Nap ended awhile ago when George told me it was his suppertime. Don't want to sleep too much now. I do want to sleep tonight.

Sounds like a good dinner, Judie. We had pork chops last night. I bought a big package of them awhile back, so I've been able to take one from the freezer from time to time and pop it in the oven.

stronghunter said...

I watered my backyard plants. It is getting very cloudy here, though. Maybe it will rain?

Poor dogwood trees look thirsty.

BEagle said...

We had an awesome storm today.

I checked the cam at 3:45 and there was a big bundle of beautiful feathers on the nest.

I was not imagining things, I did feel an earthquake tremor yesterday. I found out today that a good many others felt it as well.

I saw a report that said there was a fox at the PH nest. Oh my, oh my.

Ms Bookworm said...

Hi, Everyone!

Happy Birthday, Sophia! Hope your day is really fun!

I have been trying to read back on the blog a bit. Got busy this morning cleaning spots off my light beige carpet, and, well...you know how cleaning one spot makes another area look bad? Ended up cleaning almost the whole room! Plum worn out now! Wish I could spend more time here, but Hubby will be home from work shortly, and now must VACUUM the carpet. Have school tonight, too.
Will be back later after school to chat a bit.
Really happy to see how Isla is continuing to improve! She is truly a miracle bird!

Haven't seen any news about Jo's husband's brother--hope he's doing well. Prayers for him!

Well, better run. Will BBL! :o]

paula eagleholic said...

Wow, Palmer is still visiting!

stronghunter said...

Looks like Palmer is hollering.

BEagle said...

Did it storm at the nest?

The tremor was very slight. If one wasn't sitting very still, one would not have noticed it.

I was very still because I was thinking. When I felt it, I started heading to the exit but realized that it wasn't getting worse.

So I went back to thinking.... ;)

Mema Jo said...

Wow! That little red panda with its dark legs like the adult is adorable.
The way the red pandas hid from the cams I'm surprised they have such a great slide show of Shama and her cub.
Thanks for the link Lynn.

BEagle - go to Paula's link to see that Island Fox climbing up to the eagle's nest. It's at 1:58pm

She still has big feet.

BEagle said...

Ooh. gotta see Paula link for the fox.

hedgie said...

Jo, glad BIL is doing well. Isn't modern surgical technique amazing??

BEagle....your thinking mode kept you cool and calm!!

Don't think there was any rainstorm at nest. If so it was a very isolated cloud! None of the rest of us got any.

Mema Jo said...

BWE has fish in the nest - not sure to whom it belongs!

I'm sure Palmer is waiting on his fish!

BEagle said...

You know, I am just not sure how to get to Paula's link.

BEagle said...

We had what looks like a tropical storm.

Sheets of rain. Lightening and thunder. Whee.

BEagle said...

The earthquake experienced in Ohio was awesome. The bunk bed rocked at least five inches one way.

BEagle said...

I am presently not thinking.

BEagle said...

OK. I saw the fox. Didn't take much for the eaglet to scare it off.

Making itself look huge and scaring the wits out of the fox.

BEagle said...

It sure would be nice if the sound came back on suddenly at our nest.

For once, we might appreciate the screaming.

BEagle said...

Now I am thinking. After a few tacos settled.

The infections/parasites are gone. He's improving daily.

He will not be released here at the Rachel Carson Building-he's not ready. Feather development is still slow and weight is still down. He's not preening, so his flight feathers are slow to come in. Eventually, we would like to release him, but there is no guarantee he'll fully recover. If he does, the release may occur this Fall or Spring of 2011. He will get flying and hunting lessons while in rehabilitation.

Hedgie you need to check comments to see WHO (not me) saying PH has a patio???

stronghunter said...

I said something about a patio at PH. I got it from a YouTube video that mentioned it.

paula eagleholic said...

I wonder if Palmer is in for the night?

paula eagleholic said...

PH does have a "patio"...it is the sticks on the tree top on the lower right of the nest.

paula eagleholic said...

Dana, not sure about bigger foxes climbing trees...the island foxes are much smaller.

hedgie said...

DANA---I meant that a fox couldn't get to Isla's nest because it doesn't have a patio-------you asked why the fox couldn't climb there---and I answered: because it doesn't have a patio.

stronghunter said...

Sophia, I hope your birthday has been a wonderful one.

hedgie said...

Meant to say, of ocurse, in first comment that LOL doesn't have the patio. PH does.

Aw Lynn, haven't you ever eaten cream spinach? Spinach quiche? Popeye is not happy with you.

Goodnight, Lori.

Andy, have a good night at school. Hope you get your straight A exams back tonight and can then go home to your sparkling carpet.

Hi BEagle. Yep, can really see the feathers on Phoenix. Looks beautiful tonight.

BEagle, may you never have tremors while you're thinking.

Jo, good news about bil and thank you for the Mason update.

Hi Dana. I do have Adobe Flashplayer 10 installed. Installed several times over. Hey, disappointment happens. Next year.

Dinner was pretty good (including the spinach). Now off to watch First 48. BBL

Finished watching some TV game shows and will go back in at 10:00 to watch the Royal Pains... I like those guys.

Palmer is really flaked out in the nest. I suppose she has been doing well
with the flying and would love to know how she is doing with the hunting/fishing skills....

Mema Jo said...

I do love Spinach quiche. Throw in a little bacon and it is scrumptious.
Best I ever ever had was at a restaurant in Williamsburg VA ! I would even go back for more.

paula eagleholic said...

Palmer up and flapping

paula eagleholic said...

LOve spinach anything!

Palmer playing with the sticks in the nest now

paula eagleholic said...

Oh lord that's a fish..where did that come from? Did I just miss a delivery?

paula eagleholic said...

She is attacking it with gusto!

paula eagleholic said...

Went back and checked my video...looked like Lib flew in on right side, Palmer snagged the fish, he stayed for a moment, she chased him off, and now she's eating it!

paula eagleholic said...

Palmer still eating.

stronghunter said...

Spidey's handiwork is becoming visible.

Palmer is eating away.

paula eagleholic said...

Fishy all gone!

paula eagleholic said...

Poop shoot.

paula eagleholic said...

She's contemplating leaving

hedgie said...

Palmer is thinking about flying the coop. Fish? What fish? Polished that one off rapidly! Web is getting awful---turning cam off for the night.

Judie---NO spinach, no way, no how!

paula eagleholic said...

She's still on the right side looking out...now maybe tracking parent?

BEagle said...

I think Palmer is at the nest for the evening. Will probably rush off at the 1st break of dawn.

She must be wore out.

Mema Jo said...

Will you do Broccoli, Lynn!

paula eagleholic said...

Still there as far as I can make out.

Yup, she's an early riser!

stronghunter said...

Was Loretta supposed to have her dental work done today?

Lolly said...

So, Palmer is in for the night? sure can not tell by sight or sound.

Had a good day today. Went shopping and have some new clothes, a skirt and a blouse for the wedding we are going to next month. Also bought a wedding present. Purchased a set of king size sheetz off her registry. Did I spell it right?
