This is a recipe I will do this week:

The Naturalist’s Herb & Spice Cough Syrup
(kid-safe!)

Ingredients:
Honey (demulcent)
Raisins (expectorant)
Onion, Garlic, Lemon (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial)
Thyme, Sage (expectorant, antimicrobial)
Ginger (cough suppressant, anti-inflammatory)
Cloves, Allspice, Cinnamon, Cayenne (pain killer, improve circulation, antimicrobial)
Chamomile (relaxation/sleep aid)
Wild Rose hips (vitamin C)

Part1:
1 Onion - Grate
1 head of Garlic - Rasp/finely mince
1-2 Lemons - Juice and chop
Large handfuls of fresh Thyme & Sage - Finely mince
2 tbsp Ginger Powder (or more if fresh)
2 tsp each; Cloves, Allspice, Cinnamon, Cayenne

Add all the above ingredients together and mash/muddle/pound together with a wooden spoon until it is thoroughly mashed together, using a bit of water or lemon juice if needed.

Then add:
½ C. Dried Chamomile Flowers
½ C. Dried Wild Rose Hips (do not mash if dried whole)

Pour 4 C. boiling water over mixture and gently mix, and let steep overnight, or for 2-3 hours on the lowest stove top burner setting. You do NOT want to cook/simmer/boil this mixture in order to retain more of the medicinal properties.

Part 2:
1 C. Raisins – simmer with enough water to cover raisins until raisins are soft and the water is absorbed, puree this mixture (add a bit more water if required) and set aside.

Part 3:
Strain the mixture from part 1. I used cheese cloth so I could squeeze out every last drop of goodness.
Add the pureed raisin mixture from part 2.
Freeze mixture in ice cube trays (I used Baby Food freezer trays). There will still be solids that can settle to the bottom, so mix while pouring your portions out so that it includes all ingredients.

Part 4:
Add equal parts of the finished mixture and honey together, this will make a syrup consistency. Store in the fridge, it should last a week. This was quite a bit of work, and I wouldn’t want to go through this every time I needed a batch – that is why I chose to freeze the mixture in portions. Every time I need some medicine, I can just pop a frozen cube out, thaw, mix with honey, and store in the fridge for the week!

Results:
I did not hear my daughter (18 mo old) cough even once last night, she loved the taste, she went to bed without a fuss, and slept through the night! I would call it a success!!!

*Note, this medicine is NOT intended for children under 1 year of age.

It was a beautiful day in Berryville, Va. for Baby Brantley's funeral.
Hard to believe that last Friday, I was holding him and kissing him and he was laughing and giggling at me...
It was a very precious service, the words were so very fitting.
There were many people there (maybe a couple hundred) and many beautiful flowers. Momster's flowere was the large planter with the trailing ivy and a big blue bow.

We all went to the Fire dept. (where all my family works) for a wonderful luncheon, which was donated by different vendors and restraunts from Berryville. No cost to Rachael and Robbie.
I have posted some "not so good photos" on my blog 'WANDA'S WISHES'

Very tired...need some sleep...more on the funeral, tomorrow.

Good Night...love and prayers and love for all♥

Jewels said...

Dear Carolyn Smith,

As panda cam watchers may have noticed: from Mei's behavior and the sounds we're hearing, we have a giant panda cub!

As far as we can tell, the cub was born at about 10:46 p.m. on September 16. According to chief veterinarian Suzan Murray:

“Mei Xiang is behaving exactly the same way she did when Tai Shan was born. She is cradling her cub closely , and she looks so tired, but every time she tries to lay down, the cub squawks and she sits right up and cradles the cub more closely. She is the poster child for a perfect panda mom.”

We believe there is only one cub. If the cub is to have a twin, we should know by sunrise.

For now, the only way animal care staff will monitor the cub is using the web cams. Our goal is for Mei Xiang to raise this cub naturally. With Tai Shan, it wasn’t until he was about two weeks old that Mei walked away from him briefly and our veterinary team was able to give him a brief well-cub exam.

Keep your eyes on the panda cam and on our website and social media networks

Eagle-Eyed's Sissy said...

Oh Jewels, what great news that is!! We have baby at NZ!! That is so great. I was getting afraid we were gonna lose Mei Xiang soon if she didn't have a baby.

Wanda, you all have been in our thoughts and prayers for days now. I am glad the service went well.

Up in the middle of the night, been tossing and turning for over an hour so I just got up and started work. I will check back with y'all later. Hope everyone has a good day today.

good morning to one and to all. rainy here....tv says crashes are everywhere. yuck. love the rain, don't love the fact that people forget to slow down.

it was a good weekend around here. we lost all 3 games in bowling, again...but that's typical for us. i'm still adjusting to that heavier ball. by the end of the 3rd game i had to just use the lighter ball, i could feel the strain in my forearm.

had a nice dinner last night; had the usual, the neighbor came over, our oldest (who bowls with us), our pal russell and his daughter....brisket, mashed potatoes, and salad with a coconut cake for dessert. publix (grocery store) makes dandy cakes. i think about my mom who baked a cake a week for dad....NICE cakes too, from scratch. completely from scratch, always! and i feel pathetic that i buy them, but i also work work work.....so something's gotta give. i will say it was tasty without the made from scratch fuss!

rolling into another week my friends ... i hope everyone has a safe/wonderful day. light, love, hugs, and smiles....

GOOD MORNING MY FRIENDS...

We are getting ready to go into the church and get a head-start on Soup Kitchen dinner. We are having Chicken Rice Soup and Chicken Salad Sandwiches...getting to be soup weather:) It takes a long time to make the chicken salad...have to let the chicken cool thoroughly before it ground. So we will cook the chicken today and finish the rest tomorrow.
While the chicken is cooking, I have some donated clothes to hang up or fold. This will be very theraputic for Gene and I.
GG did just fine yesterday, without me...she didn't even take her 'extra' pain pill!

Again, THANK YOU ALL for your sweet words of encouragement and love and the many prayers truly helped us get through a very difficult day. I will comment more on yesterday, later...too painful right now...need to let my tear ducts rest!

Have a great day...I love you all, so much!♥

Judie said...

Good morning.

How nice to have a baby panda. Congratulations to mom and NZ!

Yes, Shirley, I wondered if anyone else had checked the bear cam. Yesterday was the anniversary of Hope's death. Good news is that no research bears were killed this year. Lily and two other adult females are pregnant and denned.

The potted plant owl has two eggs.

Pete's Pond has a dark screen. Seems from the chat that some animal has died at or near the pond.

Wanda, have a good head start on the soup kitchen.

stronghunter said...

Good morning, Judie.

Tried to hook up with the Panda cam, but no luck. I am not sure if I have clicked all the right keys, but expect there is an overload at the moment anyway.

I saw something about Pete's Pond being down. Did not see the bit about some animal dying. I am sure that there would be some unpleasant stuff happening there from time to time.

Judy E,
A fever makes you dehydrated. So up your intake on fluids, preferably Water and not soda. Also with carrying a fever, whatever bug you have, that is when you are contagious. SO anytime you have a fever, that is when you are supposed to stay home.
Take ibuprofin and if that does not seem to help bring fever down, alternate ibuprofin and tylenol.

Jewels said...

Hope that helps, and yes that is A Mom (Lynn) rule!!!!

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

Was just deleting old emails (yes I am a hoarder of emails). Had one from Lynn in January on the anniversary of Donna's death. I love and miss them both so very much!

Jewels said...

Shar, me too. I have many un opened forwards from Mom. I opened one last night from 2010!!! It was a touching forward and yes I even replied, knowing that she won't get it. :( sniff sniff

Eagle-Eyed Shar said...

Oh Jewels, she got it! :)

Yes, usually, JudyE, you have to be the one to decide to go home...
if they tell you, sometimes it can make a difference with your leave...like, do you have to use yours ??
If you are not fit for duty, they can send you home for a lot of reasons...we sometimes have to deal with that at my workplace...
but if you are contagious, like Professor Judie says....you need to stay home and keep those germs all to yourself..
and remember, GERMS HATE REST !!

That's my story and I'm sticking to it !

Good Afternoon Wonderful Eagle Pals

MARGY we have a poster at both our time clocks If you are ill or sick please let a salaried member of management know they will decided if you should continue your shift
and especially if you work in the food area in parentheses
So I did and I do work in the food area but was told it was ok if I felt like working to continue I don't work with fresh food of deli just dry goods and I feel ok except for the fever and you don't get sick pay for the first day you miss only the second and continuous days and I can't afford to take the time off with vaca coming up I sold my stock last night this way I don't have to use a credit card like I have in the past
and they do hold it against you if you call in sick or go home sick and if you have a dr note they still say it unexcused absent after so may unexcused absents they can fire you

Hi all! We had a long day...a great day. Going to fb to download pics. It may take a while. We drove up to the glacier stopping a few times. Did the hike to the glacier, decided not to ride out as we have done that before.

On the way back we saw 3 big horn ewes. They were running along beside the rode and then crossed. I did get a couple of pictures.

Back at home late after stopping at the grocery store for a few things and then grilled some steaks. Weather is so nice we ate outside even though it was starting to get dark.

I am exhausted! lol

Lolly said...

lol Hoda....I was right behind you in posting.

I kept my eyes to the sky. Did see one eagle nest, but it really looks like it is abandoned as it is in bad shape. Saw two birds..I think they were Groshawks. I will continue to look!

HELLO THERE:)

Got the chicken cooked and put away in the fridge...Clothes Closet is standing tall. Tomorrow I will make the soup and sandwiches after Gene and Tom grind the chicken. Two of our helpers will make the sandwiches ahead of time. I love this meal, so many of us join in on the preparing of it!

I loved having Margy stop in and we had a nice chat. Showed her our new fridge and freezer and all the goodies that we got from the Food Bank truck.

JUDY, you will be a super-duper volunteer, when the time comes. I know you are very personable and friendly with people and a good worker. You will enjoy it as much as I do. Just make sure you do something that fits you.

So we are supposed to have some wicked weather tomorrow? Hope it waits until Soup Kitchen is done for the night...hate to cook so much food and have no guests:(

GOOD NIGHT TO YOU ALL...love and prayers from me to you♥

Hi, Everyone,

Getting here late tonight! Have been very busy with Emma. She seems to be feeling better tonight, but has had some kind of problem going on. Saturday night she was miserable from the heat, and panting very fast. Did all I could think of to cool her off. She felt a teeny bit better on Sunday. She feels better yet tonight, but not 100% yet. I'm so glad the weather was cooler here today.

Been thinking about and praying for Wanda, Gene, GG, and their whole family.

So glad to hear that there's another baby panda!!!

Ken went to his Dr. appt. today, and all is well. He got a flu shot, too. I get mine on Sept.
30th.

JudyE, good to hear that your fever broke, and you're feeling better! Get plenty of rest!

Sounds like Lolly & Jack are having a grand time--fantastic!

Paula, glad you're back home OK.

Shirley, hope Flash is feeling better now. Gosh, 4 kinds of pills!
Poor fella! Arthritis can be nasty, though.

Well, need to get back to Emma. Hope she feels better tomorrow. She's still eating, so that's a good sign.

Remembered to vote for Dr. Sharpe.

Have said prayers for everyone,
all creatures, and our furbabies.
The porch light is on, and both security systems are enabled. Sleep well, with SED. God bless, and goodnight. Love all of you!

Good Tuesday morning my eagle friends. Did you know that the word "friends" is very hard to type first thing in the morning? My fingers NEVER seem to hit the right keys in the right order for some reason and I ALWAYS have to retype that word. Think I may just publish it each morning however it comes out - it will become my trademark "first post of the day."

The blob of green to the west of us is HUGE - looks like a lot of rain coming this way today! High winds are forecast as well.

Judy, hope you are feeling better today!

Hope Emma and Flash are feeling better as well.

Headed over to FB to check out Lolly's pics.

Have a great day all!

good morning everyone!

JUDYE: feel better! i like to have gatorade on hand for when i am sick....the electrolytes help the dehydration. and chicken noodle soup; specifically the broth really IS good for you....I think it is (insert whatever word you would like to here, but mine is really rather inappropriate for this blog, so will abbreviate) BS that walmart takes that stance on absences.

thinking of everyone this morning; hoping everyone is well...

had a super yoga practice last night. different instructor form the Saturday session; but it was really good. different poses and some challenging, but bolsters and modifications help! i was so mellow by the time class was over that i just wanted to sleep right there!!!!

there is a FALL EQUINOX yoga class this sat night. thinking about going to that as well. :)

i am so glad i finally arranged things so i can do this...and glad they offer the class 2x a week now. :) i feel sooooo good.

have a fantastic day. taking miss sable to the vet today. the lypoma is really getting bigger adn i had to increase her pain meds. she is also
growing another bump on her leg, further down. she is doing much
better, came out of that funk from when luke transitioned. (still miss that old dude). she is inside 95% of the time now.....which is fine. a 70 lb dog you never know is inside cuz she snoozes most of the day. you KNOW the 12 lb dog (beano) is in the house.....he is mr hyperactive.

all right, thinking of everyone in need.....sending light, love, healing, comfort and smiles to each of you. hugs my friends.....talk to you later...
